[Goanet] My memories of Velsao - A tree that gives nuts on its leaves or petals
Edible nuts.. I think I was just about 7, when I first ate those nuts and we used to eat it regularly. As we were passing the road, it somehow reminded me of the tree at the spot, we reversed back and the tree is till there. I even ate the nuts i.e. 57 years later. Which could mean the tree is atleast 100 years old Don't know if anyone has ever seen or heard of this before This is on the main road to Birla / Vasco and before Velsao Panchayat /Church Petals or leaves with edible nuts on it http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk54/7250589572/in/photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk54/7250590536/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk54/7250591350/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk54/7250588588/in/photostream/ The Tree http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk54/7271822434/sizes/k/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk54/7271801310/sizes/k/in/photostream/ with dry leaves or petals http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk54/7271811060/sizes/k/in/photostream/ It’s green leaves –close up http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk54/7271824370/in/photostream/ Extra: There was a gironn ‘Willy-ighe gironn’ (flour.rice, oil mill) on other side of the road (It does not exist now). The owner was more popular as ‘motte-potta Willy’ who also comes from a big house located at Velsao-Pale St. Estev Chapel By the tree, there is very big Portuguese house ‘Frans-mari’ (Francis Marie?) whose main facing towards the Railway tracks where there is a cross erected on a pumpkin (see pic below house and passage partly seen) In this house, I first saw a refrigerator which run on kerosene. We used to travel here to sing Ladin or litany of Curacao Marie or St. Anna every year. In between the house and the tree there is a short road / passage to the Railway tracks. Teacher Miss Aura (Braganza ?) of Portuguese Aula (Primary School) used to reside around here. She, for many years or until her death (2007?) was a psychiatrist’s patient Often seen in the streets with her best bridal outfits, a fashion model, with hand bag, gloves and a pipe cigarette in her hand. She had very good memory though i.e. in 80’s she could recongnise and talk about 50’s The next big house is ‘Masma-aton(io)’ The other side of the Tracks there are some old large houses too E.g. [Goanet] 'Pimples on Paradise: Stories of journalism and anti-journalism
Hi Newslaundry.com published an article of mine on the media scene here. Its called 'Pimples on Paradise' http://www.newslaundry.com/2012/06/pimples-on-paradise/ Would consider it a privilege if you could find the time to read through it. Thank you for your support... Mayabhushan 'Pimples on Paradise' By Mayabhushan Nagvenkar I live in Goa. In a small corner in that paradise. In that corner, where I live, there aren’t any dancing virgins. There’s only journalists. And crimson trails of torn professional hymens. And the story I have to tell is not new. It isn’t even a big story.Like the one which spilled out with the Nira Radia tapes. There’s no Barkha Dutt. There’s no Vir Sanghvi. Not even a relatively low-brow, shrill Prabhu Chawla. The story is about a small place. The heroes here are a lot smaller in scale. So are the villains. But the stories from this small place are as interesting as the ones which come from the big cities. Trust me. The sweet, warm smell of purification reeks the same everywhere. As the author of this piece, I will reserve stories involving me for later. The first story’s a comparison between two opposite journalistic poles. This is the story of Ash. And the story of Pats. Ash has been a journalist for nigh two decades. He’s conscientiously worked on the newsdesk and reported extensively in Goa. He’s anchored newspaper editions for all three local newspapers in Goa. But then he went on and did three things over the last few years – not necessarily in the order listed. He became a founding member of a newspaper employees union seeking fair working conditions. Later, he contested civic elections after putting in a legit leave of absence. Third, he befriended me. Result: He has been virtually unemployed for the last four of the eight years. There are four daily English newspapers in Goa. One monthly news magazine. And several other news, feature and lifestyle magazines. But no jobs to be had for him. In my honest opinion, he has the professional wherewithal to fit into any newspaper set up across the country. The one reason which editors and newspaper managements in Goa give him for rejecting his job application, is his ‘voluble’ support and perceived involvement in an anonymous media critiquing blog I ran by the name of * Penpricks*. And he wasn’t even part of it. Now, Pats has also been around a bit. He’s on the vernacular end of things. His honest cherry popped early and was perhaps replaced by a big red plum. He was caught using a ruling Congress politician’s credit card for wardrobe shopping. Took paid-news *suparis* regularly. Bought a few mining trucks. Started real estate projects. Until one fine day he was asked to leave by his newspaper management, when they discovered that he hadn’t withdrawn from his salary account for several years. Within a month he was snapped up by another vernacular newspaper and his cycle of corruption renewed once again. The second story has no central characters. There were just too many of them during the run-up to the assembly elections in March this year, for any one in particular to take centre stage. Early during the campaign, both the Congress and the BJP came in with war chests to cultivate the media. Well, there’s still no confirmation of the exact monies doled out to the media here. But then there’re things you see for yourself. While one political party offered journalists covering the polls tablet phones along with money, another party simply offered cash on the barrel. So if you see media folk in Goa who suddenly flaunt a tablet phone and tell-tale signs of a sudden flush of cash, chances are you may have just spotted a bad egg. The deal struck between journalists and newspaper managements and poll contestants these last elections was relatively uncomplicated, but also had a sheen of innovation. Conventionally, the concept of paid news involves payment of money for publishing of favourable content. During the March elections however, the paid-news deals involved not just writing favourably about one candidate, but also blanking out news involving his opponents. Paid-news emerged as an evolved and a matured entity this time round. Those interested in looking up lop-sided reportage, could scan the poll coverage in the *Herald* for a comparative analysis of assembly constituencies like Fatorda, Curchorem, Quepem, etc, where the coverage has been extremely ‘unusual’ to say the least. There were other newspapers who did it too, but none with the élan of the above-mentioned newspaper. And then there’s this little story about me. I’ve been a working journalist since 1997. I have worked for *The Asian Age*in Mumbai, *Herald* in Goa, *Tehelka* in New Delhi and have also been part of a band of journalists who produced investigative news software for television channels. And then I’ve done some writing on and critiquing of the media in Goa over the years. There’s the story about editorials for

[Goanet] GSRP comments on vital issues reported in Goa's Newspapers - June 9, 2012
TOI -Goa BBSM MELLOWS DOWN AFTER CM CLARIFIES ON MOI HERALD BBSM NOW SPEAKS A DIFFERENT 'BHASHA' [Why BBSM lost the firepower] Comments: Goa Su-Raj Party [GSRP] believes that the above (reported) has happened and had to happen because of the following: GSRP's long-standing stand has 'been' and 'is' that: 1) Mother Tongue be defined as there cannot be 'two' Mother-Tongues for a STATE and GOA is no exception to this basic understanding. 2) Does Marathi qualifies as GOA's Mother Tongue. 3) That the MOI in Goa Government run Primary Schools be solely in Goa's Mother Tongue. 4. That Goa Government grants be provided to any/all Primary School/s which have the MOI in Goa's the Mother Tongue. 5. If Marathi MOI Primary Schools be extended these grants (even if it does not qualify as Goa's Mother Tongue), then English Language Primary Schools be also extended these grants. What Manohar Parrikar's Government has managed to do and not do: 1. Has maintained that MOI in Goa Government run Primary Schools be in Goa's Mother Tongue without defining Goa's Mother Tongue. 2. Extended govt. grants to Marathi MOI Primary Schools which are definitely flouting the 'Mother Tongue' definition. 2. Had to extend Goa government grants to English Language MOI Primary Schools also as there was no way out of this impasse. What GSRP will do in this regard: 1) Define Goa's Mother Tongue once and for all, if necessary, through a 'no-nonsense' census. 2) The MOI in all Government run Primary Schools shall be solely the Goa's Mother Tongue, both in Devanagri and Romi 3) Goa Government grants shall go only to Primary Schools having MOI as the Mother Tongue. None else. 4) Central grants for 'regional' language MOI Primary Schools shall be given to all such primary schools, including Primary Schools with MOI as Goa's Mother Tongue. 5) As According to GSRP, Goa's Mother Tongue is KONKANI, period. 6) All Primary Schools in Goa shall have a MASTER ENGLISH LANGUAGE CLASS to prepare the students for EASY transition to the Secondary Level MOI which is ENGLISH LANGUAGE. GSRP appreciates the careful navigation resorted to by CM Manohar Parrikar on the ulcerated issue of MOI. Yes, it does qualify to be termed as 'statemanly' navigation. ** TOI-Goa PLEA TO ALINA ON GOA INCLUSION IN ART 371 [Lokancho Addar - Trajano D'Mello] Comments: GSRP has already made it's stand clear w.r.t. the amendment to Art 371 to give Goa the Special Provisions which is as follows: 1. That Goa Legislative Assembly first pass a 'resolution' to this effect. 2. No such resolution has been ever passed by the Goa Legislative Assembly, and if such a resolution has been passed ( as we are told) then this resolution has not reach the Centre. The Central Union Minister has clearly stated that Goa needs to first submit this resolution before any consideration given in this regard. 3. Manohar Parrikar's present Government is in a fluid position to pass such a resolution, especially when it enjoys absolute majority. 4. Ms. Alina can help in this regard to expedite passing such a resolution since this was her late husband's [Matanhy's] priority of attaining Special Status for Goa. 5. GSRP expects Manohar Parrikar's government to table such a resolution in the coming Assembly Session without any further delay as GOA is now WATCHING the intent of the GOA-BJP. floriano lobo Gen. Secretary/Spokesperson GSRP 9422060347 GOA SU-RAJ PARTY - GSRP Shall conduct Interviews with PROSPECTIVE CANDIDATES for all 40 Constituencies of Goa for Elections 2017 starting from May-2012 [Saturdays Only] at Party's City Office, 2nd. [Goanet] J M Nazareth's - To the African: No Guest am I
Leroy Veloso of Moira very kindly gifted me a copy of Brown Man Black Country: A Peep into Kenya's Freedom Struggle by John Maximilian Nazareth who also came from Moira, copies of which I believe were gifted to him by the author's daughter Jeanne Hromnik. I found the book a little difficult and the reasons for this are set out by the author himself in his preface, if you can get hold of a copy. But the book opens with a poem written in the best tradition of Robert Browning's dramatic monologues and which I think is quite germane to many of the controversies which Goans have willy-nilly embroiled themselves in, controversies regarding identity and belonging. I dare say that not just Goans who have migrated elsewhere, but also those who have migrated into Goa from other parts will empathise strongly with Nazareth's thoughts. Re: [Goanet] Hind-Christian dialogue (was: Sanal Edamaruku trial)
Hi Marlon, I was speaking out of practical experience. When I was approached by the Geelong Revival Group, which has a presence in Goa, as I understand, I was told that I would be cured of my skin ailment, psoriasis. In course of conversation with the people, they called the Pope names and said a lot about what they thought of the Catholics. This, of course made me think twice. Equally so, there are papers and editorials which try to defame the Catholic Church both in Melbourne and elsewhere in the world. I could say a lot about the good works performed here and elsewhere, but then again I would again be accused of superiority. These statements of mine in no way claim any superiority of the Catholics over other Christians, or indeed, believers of other religions. The statements were made because many people equate Protestants and other Christian cults with Catholics, and then accuse the Pope and Catholics for the behaviour of the aggressive Christian groups. One such instance was burning the Church of St John the Baptist (Catholic) some years ago, mistaking it for a Baptist (Protestant) church. Regards, Gabriel
Re: [Goanet] J M Nazareth's - To the African: No Guest am I
To the African: No Guest am I Why do you call me guest, Where here I have my home, When here my father lived and died, My mother too, and a brother? Their graves lie there within this City's bounds, Where I myself was born, My children too - all three of them. Must they and I leave this land, Be strangers to it Because your skin is black and mine and theirs is brown. Your folk came here some scores of years ere ours? Why do you not hold out your hands In friendship, and call me friend, In love and call me brother, And bid me stay and help to build this land, Give me warm assuarance, dispel my fears, By deed, not by words alone? If love or friendship be not in you, Let justice rule your thoughts: Shame not the past nor the years to come, That I am guest I do deny. But when you'd drive me out how can I stay? I lack the power, and now may be I lack the will The day is late for change of mind. Yet even now I'd change, for fain I'd stay, If justice blest this land, Of warm hearts bid me stay And warm hands held me close And told me tarry, Tarry till the end of your days, This land is yours as it is mine, This is your home as it is mine; No guest of mine art thou, but friend and brother, This home, this land, of ours, our joined hands must make it great On Sat, Jun 9, 2012 at 3:46 PM, augusto pinto pinto...@gmail.com wrote: Leroy Veloso of Moira very kindly gifted me a copy of Brown Man Black Country: A Peep into Kenya's Freedom Struggle by John Maximilian Nazareth who also came from Moira, copies of which I believe were gifted to him by the author's daughter Jeanne Hromnik. Observing the news projected by the newsagencies in Goa. one feels that with the economic imperative of staying as a tourist destination that earns the State a lot of money for the the locals and the other out-of-state Indian entrpreneurs, we shall have to knuckle under the policies of outside interests, Be it the Congress Party that has alliances with the politicians in neighbouring Karnantaka or now the BJP which has kith-and - kin relationships with neigbouring state of Maharashtra the smallest state in the Unionwill be controlled covertly by outside interests .Like areas in southern Spain we will have endure the concretisation of farmland to accomodate housing for the guests, be they welcome or not by the older goan families.

[Goanet] Sammy’s Tiatr worth watching
Sammy’s Tiatr worth watching The recently released tiatr by Sammy Tavares,’Aplea Burgeam Sangatak’ perfectly suits the today’s goan family life and passes a very strong message. The tiatr shows how today's son’s turn out to be so low and cheap to grab the ancestral house. One of the daughter- in- law even goes to the extent of forging the father-in-law’s signature so that they can sell the ancestral house to a builder. Cent percent marks for Justin and Felcy for their respective roles and the burning of the Christmas star is a very meaningful scene to watch. As usual John D'silva does justice to his comedy role. With regard to songs, Marcus’s solo as an orphan boy stands high among all. The girl child singer is at her best and a special mention goes to Sammy’s solo regarding the Train ticket collector. The fatty Cajetan de Sanvordem makes a good dancing resulting in the good entertainment. Overall the tiatr is very much worth watching. A piece of advice to Sammy as the Curtain of Goa Police Head quarters turn out to be of short size at Ravindra bavan,Margao as the part of stage setting carried out behind the curtain can be seen by the Audience from both sides of the stage. Re: [Goanet] IAS OFFICER SHUNTED FOR NOT BOWING DOWN TO GOA CM’S ORDERS
A few generic points: 1: IF Dr Sarangi can be transferred by the CM, it means that he is answerable to the CM. 2: IF Dr. Sarangi arrived in Goa just recently, it could be submitted that he has not yet got his feet wet in Goa. 3: WAS he right and reasonable in transferring the 24 excise officers? Was the reason for transfer only the TIME? Were there others who met the time-criterion for transfer? Were the officers given time to move? Was Dr Sarangi fair and reasonable in his actions? 4: IF he has been unreasonably transferred, can not Dr. Sarangi apply for a Judicial Review of his transfer? IF. NOT .. Well ... That is gorrment service for you. IF you are that good, try compete on the open market. jc On Jun 8, 2012, at 11:27 AM, Aires Rodrigues airesrodrigu...@gmail.com wrote: The recently appointed Excise Commissioner of Goa Dr. Jayadev Sarangi has been shunted from the post for having transferred Excise Inspectors without the approval of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. Dr Sarangi, a senior IAS officer who was posted in Goa last month by the Union Home Ministry had taken charge as Excise Commissioner just two weeks ago on 21st May. Dr. Jayadev Sarangi known to be no-nonsense officer was Deputy Inspector General of Prisons at the Tihar Jail before being posted in Goa. On 1st June, Dr. Jayadev Sarangi issued orders transferring 24 Excise Inspectors and Sub-Inspectors who had completed a year at the same excise station. Incidentally Mr. Sarangi left the same evening to Delhi on a week’s leave to bring his family down to Goa. After the transfer orders were faxed the same evening to the Excise stations, the transferred officials moved their political contacts the same night to get their orders cancelled. Sources reveal that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar was annoyed that the transfers were effected without his consent and tried to get them cancelled that same night. It is learnt that the OSD to the Chief Minister Mr. Michael D’Souza who was officiating as Excise commissioner during Dr. Sarangi’s leave period tried to contact officers late that night to cancel the orders. On Monday 4thJune, Michael D’Souza, issued an order keeping in abeyance the transfer orders issued by Dr. Sarangi. Interestingly in the transfer orders issued by Dr Sarangi, four lady officials for the first time were posted at the Excise stations. In the past ladies were reportedly always sidelined and denied posting at the excise stations. Ironically Dr Sarangi who is scheduled to return back to Goa tomorrow accompanied by his family to resume as Excise Commissioner on June 11thfinds himself suddenly shunted out on the orders of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. Dr. Sarangi has been directed to report to personnel department to await his next posting. The transfer of staff within the department was the prerogative of the Excise Commissioner and did not require any approval or consent of the Chief Minister or any other politician. Chief Minister Manohar Parikar is high handedly interfering in the day to day administration. This behavior is neither permissible nor acceptable. The bureaucracy should be be allowed to function independent and free of political interference. The rule of law requires government officials to solely comply with the law at all times. Every government official should vow not to succumb to illegal political orders and to always do what is right while functioning strictly in accordance with law. Government officials who bow and bend to the politicians in power have no right to be in public service being paid by the State exchequer.
