[Goanet] The Menace Of Ram Sene

2012-06-19 Thread Freddy Fernandes
The Menace Of Ram Sene

The days of taking law into our own hands are long gone and in this 21st
century it is a crime to do it, the guilty are supposed to be punished as
severely as criminals themselves, that's what the law and our constitution
tells us. Even the hardcore criminals are protected by laws against brutality
by human rights groups. This is a civilized world and it has no place for
self-righteous renegade vigilantes like Pramod Muthalik and menace of Ram Sene.

Sometime back they took upon themselves to be the moral police of Karnataka as
though they themselves were pillars of morality of our society. They did not
fight against prostitution, they did not fight against drugs, they did not
fight against the rising crime nor did they fight against corruption but they
thought Valentine's day celebration was a crime, they thought girls in bars was
a crime, they even think that spending time with the person you love before
marriage in public is a crime. Has the Constitution of India been amended and
our rights and freedom curtailed ?

Not too long ago we saw videos of the brutality of these so called moral police
of Karnataka when girls were dragged and beaten up for sitting in bars and
walking with their boyfriends and those celebrating Valentine's day and as such
Pramod Muthalik and his Ram Sene were barred from entering Goa and rightly so
by the Congress. Goans do not need loose canons moving freely in Goa enforcing
their outdated draconian ideologies.

The Goan youth have reacted angrily and strongly against the Ram Sene trying to
set up bases to contaminate Goa with their extremely dangerous and detrimental
ideologies. It is good to see the youth getting involved to fight for their
rights and freedom. Cancerous cells like the Ram Sene should be treated with
chemotherapy at the inception and negated their advance further across the Goan
border.

CM, Manohar Parrikar has indeed warned the Ram Sene not to take the law in to
their hands but that's not enough as the Ram Sene could be the cause of a very
serious law and order situation in Goa and before that happens it would be very
much prudent for CM, Manohar Parrikar to ban this unstable and highly volatile
and combustible compound from entering Goan soil, as prevention is always
better than cure.

Goa compared to the rest of India, has been largely peaceful and very
hospitable to outsiders but there is a limit to everything and Goans will not
take kindly to outside forces who are trying to force their outdated and
archaic ideologies on Goans. We have lived in unity and peace for centuries,
absorbed cultures and traditions and lived in absolute harmony and it is this
peace, unity, harmony and brotherhood that will be at stake if the Ram Sene is
allowed operations in Goa.

My fervent plea to the CM, Manohar Parrikar, for the sake of Goa and Goans, ban
the Ram Sene's entry into Goa and do not allow this cancer to infect Goa and
Goan. Let Goa remain a union of diversity living in harmony as we have lived in
the centuries gone by. Let Goa be Goa, an amalgamation of cultures, traditions
and history, united in diversity and the likes of Pramod Muthalik and the
menace of Ram Sene can take a hike.

Goa: Four publications lined up for release in next two months
Published on Tue, Jun 19, 2012 at 11:06 | Source : PTI

Panaji, Jun 19 (PTI) Goa's media canvas has four important
newspaper-magazine releases lined up over next two months, including a
Marathi edition of the state's oldest newspaper Herald, Goa. A mining
group Fomento Resources is planning a tabloid size weekly newspaper,
while Herald Publications Private Limited, the century-old newspaper
company, is foraying into a Marathi newspaper, a travel magazine and
weekly newsmagazine.

All launches, except travel magazine, are scheduled in August, this year.

Sujay Gupta, Editor of the news magazine, owned by Fomento Resources,
said the venture will look into issues that are nearer to the heart of
Goans. Gupta, who had stint in Herald's English edition before moving
for the latest venture, said the newspaper will have detailed
international and national news coverage.

The newspaper, he said, has a tie up with The New York Times for
content sharing. A mining group, Fomento Resources owned by Timblo
family, who has already established its presence in electronic media
through a local cable television channel 'Prudent', is financing the
tabloid.

Gupta's newsmagazine has a competitor in the form of Herald's weekend
supplement, which is currently taking shape.

Michael Pereira, General Manager of Herald Publication, talking about
the magazine, said that it would be a complete news magazine 'Herald
Review' which will carry hard htitting stories. Herald is also in the
final stages of launching its first ever Travel magazine 'Herald
Holidays', which will be circulated through outbound flights and also
to the tourism sector. Pereira said the magazine would be a mix of
lifestyle and travel stuff, with Goa as a focus.

"We will be highlighting even international destinations. The
inaugural issue is on Bhutan," he said. Herald's Marathi newspaper
would be a milestone in Goa's journalism. The newspaper edited by
Sanjay Dhavalikar, is scheduled to be launched in mid-August.

"The main thrust would be a local content. This newspaper will be
completely independent from its English edition," said Dhavalikar,
adding that the paper will create its own readership.

Herald, Goa began as a Portuguese newspaper which later changed into
English language journalism with strong base in Catholic population.

Dhavalikar said that the 16-page Marathi broadsheet newspaper will
break new grounds in the media field of Goa. Goa currently has eight
Marathi newspapers, three English dailies and a Konkani newspaper
besides a weekly and around four monthly magazines.

I think this piece assumes relevance for Goa, considering our present

MIKE STERN COVERS ALL CORNERS OF THE MUSICAL SPECTRUM ON NEW CD

"All Over the Place"
features guest appearances by Randy Brecker, Richard Bona Kenny Garrett,
Esperanza Spalding, Victor Wooten and many others.

Since his days with Blood Sweat & Tears in the mid-1970s, followed by stints
with Billy Cobham and Miles Davis’ band in the ‘80s, and a solo career that now
spans more than 25 years, guitarist Mike Stern has used his jazz roots as a
starting point for exploring a range of alternate territories that include R&B,
rock, swing, funk, world music and numerous other regions along the musical
topography. The recipient of Guitar Player magazine’s Certified Legend Award
for 2012, he’s an artist who’s not afraid to bring numerous styles and ideas –
however diverse – into the same place just to see what happens.

All Over the Place is Stern’s new recording on Heads Up International, a
division of Concord Music Group. Set for release on June 19, 2012, the 11-song
set aligns the characteristically diverse and adventurous guitarist with a
cadre of brilliant guests, including trumpeter Randy Brecker; saxophonist Kenny
Garrett; and drummers Dave Weckl, Keith Carlock and Lionel Cordew. Also on hand
is a delegation of high-caliber electric and acoustic bass players: Esperanza
Spalding, Richard Bona, Victor Wooten, Anthony Jackson, Dave Holland, Tom
Kennedy, Will Lee and Victor Bailey.

“I’ve been playing a lot of different kinds of great music with a lot of
different musicians on some of my more recent records,” says Stern, whose Big
Neighborhood – released on Heads Up in 2009 – followed a similarly eclectic
vibe. “I love bebop, swing, rock, all the stuff that a lot of guitar players –
especially jazz players – tend to include in their music. It’s the nature of
the instrument, but very much a part of my nature as well. There’s a lot of
music that really inspires me, and it usually covers quite a few territories.”

It’s all here, starting with the mysterious funk groove of the leadoff track,
“AJ,” which Stern wrote specifically for contrabass guitarist Anthony Jackson.
Other personnel on board for the opener are saxophonist Chris Potter,
keyboardist Jim Beard, rhythm guitarist Leni Stern (Mike’s wife), drummer Keith
Carlock and percussionist Tim Keiper.

Leni returns a couple tracks later on “Out of the Blue,” this time playing an
exotic three-stringed Malian instrument called a n’goni. Her opening riffs
segue into the high-powered free-for-all featuring Brecker, Beard, Kennedy,
Keiper and drummer Kim Thompson.

A tempo changeup comes in the form of the much leaner and quieter “As Far As We
Know,” featuring Spalding on bass and vocals. “I like drama,” says Stern. “I
like a lot of dynamics. I like music that has a lot of heart, and I hope this
priority comes through in my playing and in my writing, especially on this
tune.”

Stern is joined by drummer Al Foster on three engaging songs that land squarely
in the center of the album: the funky and swinging “Blues for Al,” the
energetic and colorful “OCD,” a song loaded with solo work by Stern and
Garrett; and the much more understated and reflective acoustic piece, “You
Never Told Me.”

“Halfway Home” is a gritty blues piece that showcases Stern’s slide guitar
chops and deftly juxtaposes them against Wooten’s funky bass work and Cordew’s
relentless backbeat. The mellow groove of “Flipside” throws the spotlight on
saxophonist Bob Malach, who joins Stern in some solid solo work. Malach is back
for the title track, which closes the set on a fiery note as Stern leads a
groove that’s reminiscent of his high-energy collaborations with the Brecker
Brothers in the early ‘90s.

“The guitar tends to keep you open-minded, because you hear it in so many
places,” says Stern, listing many places he himself has ventured along the way
– not just on All Over the Place, but in earlier work as well. “You hear it in
rock, in country, in pop, in funk, in classical, you hear it in jazz, you hear
it in so many kinds of music that you can immediately identify it on one level
or another.”

Stern is ready at a moment’s notice to go to all of these places and more, and
he’s ready and willing to bring anyone along for the ride. “Music, to me, is a
language of the heart,” he says. “I hope people will get some emotional payoff
from what I’ve done on this recording. That’s the vibe that I continue to go
for with a

People need models, and seek models to bring change to their lives. Often
the seeking is via observing others in the same social class. When
Balasarasvati was dancing, there was not much interest in the form in the
upper classes. My point is that people get comfortable when they see others
are moving on. The problem with opportunities has to do with time and
place, as with anything. But those nuances are often lost on people. India
is India but opportunities, access, coaches are not always found close by
or in the site of ones surrounding.

Often its the coaches at sports facilities who notice that a given person
is suitable for something that the individual, nor their parents ever
thought about.

Determination also has to a plethora of factors, ranging from seeing the
range, between seeing no choice unless one makes the leap, to having to
deal with watching the choices others could make. And later either
celebrate others or rue oneself. (Hope this is not getting too much into
the area of dignity). MC Mary Kom is a good example to know about.

One thing that I have observed is that one has to have a thickish skin
(many of us learn this very late), be willing to put up with sneers and
taunts, and double speak. There is a dilution to the aforementioned or one
may not have to deal with it if of the same social class, or cultiural set.
It helps to be at the very least on a somewhat equal standing even to feel
together in these schools. One also has to be comfortable in many
situations in dealing with Gods from the culture in which a form is
situated. This is also true in forms that I practice.

I know a Mumbai Goan who decided to give up Bharatnatyam classes when she
became aware of the arangetram and the costs that would be incurred. She
was a sight to behold. Her Dad at that point was is no position to raise
those funds. Infact part of the reason why she evn got some training was
because the classes were being conducted in a parish school.

“She was at our institute for more than five years. She was an avid
learner. We never knew she was into sports, forget boxing, forget Olympics.
She was a shy girl,” said M R Krishnamurthy, head of Kalakshithi.

But Siona says she was the sporty kind even when she was a regular at dance
school. “I represented Goa and Karnataka in basketball at the junior level.”

I appreciate the point made about Siona being shy. Whether she was or not;
it is helpful to be at least reserved.

Likewise in language: the children of the most rabid Indian politicians at
least in the metros go to English medium schools. Its could simply be to
attain leverage and that no one should scorn. Perhaps they do better in
English. I am not sure why they go English medium when on the surface it
appears that their politics would be served better in the eyes of the poor
if they studied in their mother tongue.

Moving on: Rest assured that at the sabhas there will be discussion, small
chats on whether one can contemplate their daughters taking a punch to the
face. Or is it better that their daughters handle a football tackle.

Moving on: As opportunities are observed: some will consider emigrating to
other countries say for even for 15-20 years. These are the ones who can
gain a lot at the same time have a lot in India, including the kind of
respect they value. For sure these thoughts are running through minds, and
perhaps equally in non-christian minds.

Opportunities are sought by many, or thought of by many. Making the leap
requires overcoming bodies of water, accepting with or without reticence
many factors.

Best. Celebrate others.

The man forgot to notice that she is an accomplished Bharatnatyam dancer,

Dear Selma,

Per se, I wouldn't recommend any school in Goa for the objectives you have
in mind.

Most of the schools in Goa revolve round the Board they are affiliated to
and getting through the exams is a be all and end all of the schools. The
competition in pass percentages is fierce. Schools are not judged by the
quality of student but rather by the pass percentage.

In the 70's, there was a school in Calangute called "Happy Learners" which
was started by a breakaway group of teachers from Don Bosco Calangute. Some
of them were Adv. Jos Peter D'Souza, Alexyz Fernandes, Valentino (Dingo)
D'Souza, Juliet D'Souza and others. This school was totally student
oriented and the approach used was heuristic in nature i.e. the students
learned by experimentation. The student learned what he or she wanted and
when he or she wanted.

Unfortunately, there were very few takers for a school of this type since
the costs of running the institution were enormous in comparison to the
amount of fees collected. Also there was a problem of certification. At
some stage, these students would have to join the mainstream students and
that is where they were disadvantaged since the school was not a recognized
school.

There is a serious group of parents who are doing home schooling for their
children specially for some of those who are gifted and also for autistic
children. I would recommend this approach.

Bye and take care
Tony

arises as to when there are/were so many catholic MLAs in present and past Goa
legislative
Assemblies why none of them ever raised the question of proportionate
representation to catholics on the lines of proportionate representation to SC
and ST communities. It is natural to ask this question when you learn that some
of the heavy weight politicians in Goa has been Catholics. What then on planet
earth prevented them from raising the question of proportionate representation
to the community from which they come from? What prevented catholic mulnivasi
politicians, shudra politicians from raising the question of proportionate
representation to catholic shudra community in Goa? Their silence on this
matter led to the use and discard of Catholics by various governments in the
past
and BJP government currently in power is the latest instance of this. One can
understand the studied silence on this matter by Catholic Bamon politicians for
by birth they are not shudras and they are not expected to put their tongues to
the job to further the advancement of shudras in Goa for bamons leave by using
and discarding of Shudras. It does not matter whether they are Catholics or
adhering to some other religion. Urge and cunningness to exploit and rule over
shudras is their specialty.

Let’s re-focus on
our question as to why Catholic Shudra politicians in Goa Assembly never
demanded proportionate representation/reservation to Catholics in Goa. Surely
if they are genuine representatives of the catholic community then they ought
to raise this issue on priority basis. The fact is that no community in India
has genuine representative as their MLA or MP and present set up of our
democracy does not carry possibility either. That’s why people who get elected
and go in the state assemblies and parliament does not raise the genuine
concerns of their communities when they speak out.  That why India has 75% (83
crore people out
of total 120 crore) of the population living under poverty line with daily
income of less than Rs.20/-. They all vote in the elections and yet this state
of affairs.

If one has to become
MLA then one needs to win the favour of the political party – BJP or Congress:
both the brahmanical parties in india. Only when one finds the favour of the
parties then the person get a Party ticket to contest elections. After that
person contests elections, goes and meets up people to ask for votes and then
gets elected to the office of an MLA. However after the elections he does not
raise the genuine issues of the community such as proportionate representation.
This is because the person has to remain faithful to the party that has
accorded him the party ticket in the beginning to contest elections. Community
has not granted him the ticket to contest elections. Community gave him votes
only after he got the party ticket. Party ticket takes precedence over
community vote. Community votes are useless without party ticket.  So the MLA
though going from the community
becomes never representative of the community but representative of the Party
that gave him the ticket. This is a system in place currently that thwarts the
possibility
of genuine community representative from getting elected.

M.K.Gandhi created this system by putting his
life in risk with his 21 day fast at Yeroda jail in Pune to force great
Dr.Bhimrao Ambedkar into signing of Poona Pact on 24th September
1932. Community were disenfranchised and political parties were concentrated
with power to give tickets. Political Parties are either overtly or covertly
brahmincal in their orientation. Brahmanical orientation is always to use and
discard mulnivasis. This is also the case of political parties in Goa –
National parties and Regional parties alike. This Poona pact was applied to SC
and ST community via article 330 and 332 of the Indian Constitution. OBC got
this system dumped on them through Panchayati Raj Act that makes provision of
reservation for OBC. Without discussions this Poona Pact is also applied to
minorities such as Christians, Muslims, Sikh and remaining others. Dr. Ambedkar
termed the people getting elected through this system as stooges, agents,
dalals and bhadwas.

This is the reason
why catholic MLA in Goa never raises the issue of their community; forget about
resigning as a minister in community interest. Current 40 members Goa
Legislative Assembly has 14 Catholic MLAs spread in various political parties
and independents.  Few of them catholic
bamons.

Catholic community
and Bhahujan samaj are both exploited and ruled over by bamons. What options
for their community betterment remained in their hands? Community leadership
that is compromising must be kicked out and new non-compromising leadership
that is well versed with caste undercurrents must take over and join nationwide
agitation under the banner of Bharat Muk

Re: [Goanet] MOI, Priests, Politrics ani Porcaria

2012-06-19 Thread J. Colaco < jc>
After sending my previous post (in response to my good friend Floriano
Lobo), I had the opportunity to watch TWO Prudent Media videos on You
tube.

The first one features CM Manohar Parrikar, the second Fr. Mousinho de Ataide,

I appreciate Manohar Parrikar's Konklish. He is an intelligent man who
knows how to be flexible IF that is what he has to do in order to
communicate with his electorate. In doing so, he makes NO pretense
about believing that Living Modern Languages are rigid. Besides that,
whether I agree with what he says or not, I absolutely enjoyed the
simplicity and ease with which he was able to communicate. The same,
If I may say so, is how I feel about Digambar Kamat. These two
gentlemen are a pleasure to listen to.

To these fine gentlemen, I say: Thank You Sirs, for that pleasure.

On the other hand, we have Fr. Mousinho. He too is (from what I
understand) a very learned man.

NOW listen to him speak and ask yourself this question: IS THIS
How Mousinho spoke to his mother and/or vice-versa? And WHICH Konkani
(or even Kokni) Primary School did Mousinho attend?

I must say this, and some of you might disagree with me, BUT here is a
general position I would take with Priests:

a: You are good at performing the ceremony of Marriage BUT please do
NOT decide the mechanical method of contraception married couples
should or should NOT use. And Yes, The Rhythm method with all its
modifications is best described as Porcaria.

I believe that Priests would be able to advise on the use of
mechanical contraception, when they have successfully guided their own
marital life through the maze of intense family life.

b: You are good at building schools and providing educational and
sports opportunities for children BUT, please do NOT try to decide
what Parents should do with regards to finding better ECONOMIC avenues
for their children..(does not apply to Commie Countries)

And NO . These children will NOT join the seminary and become
priests just because they wont find be able to find any jobs (with
their Kokni) besides being Cooks and Butlers. (NOT that any form of
work or vocation including being a Cook, Butler or Priests is any
lesser in stature than any other)

I believe that Priests would be able to advise on the future of
others' children, when they have successfully guided their own
children through the maze of intense competition.

BTW: That recent priestly foray into politics (which effectively
denied a woman candidate the opportunity to serve) is best left
without comment. The people of that constituency spoke in NO uncertain
terms and gave that Political-Priest a nice little "No Thank You" and
"Don't call again unless we call you".
