[Goanet] Natalamchi Bhett - Christmas Gift (by Melvyn and Rose Fernandes)
Dear goanet readers The season of goodwill to all mankind is upon us again, we are reminded of this annual event in our towns and villages around the United Kingdom as Christmas street illuminations bring cheer, tempting shoppers to take advantage of seasonal cheaper chocolates and wine not forgetting the pantomines and work get togethers. The sun when possible peeps out for a few hours between nine am and four pm allowing folks to go to work in the dark and come home in darkness it is also normally cold and windy with Jack frost ready to visit at any time with ice falling on ones nose, ears and cars. Even the heating on Public Transport is known to fail. On Saturday 24 November, such was the weather, rainy, windy and dark, but those of us brave enough to weather the elements and make our way to Copland Hall in Wembley, North London found it was all ablaze..as we took delivery of an early Christmas Gift, Natalamchi Bhett, a heart warming, foot tapping spectular show by Goa's nightingale Lorna Cordeiro and the wonderful voice of Agnelo Fernandes with special guest star Rita Rose as well as young Kimberly Joanes. The show was a fitting tribute to the wonderful music of the late Chris Perry and the late Alfred Rose who left us a legacy of unforgettable Konkani songs. Interspersed were comedy sketches by Dagley Fernandes, Vera Joanes, Raggio Fernandes and Larry D'Souza (Larry Boy), very on-trend and excellently performed emulating our own unique sense of Goan humour. MC of the show was the very talented A C Pereira from Brampton, Canada, who also sang an upbeat duet of Malaika in Swahili with Lorna to the delight of all East African Goans present. Four band members were hand picked, Norman Cardozo, Babit Fernandes, Franco D'Silva and Mathias Sequiera, fine musicians who played with such gusto, creating the sound of a five star Big Band, just like ballroom dancing on a cruise ship. This show as well as the one in Swindon the following day was ably organised and co-ordinated by Gregg Carvalho, Bella Fernandes, Mathias Sequiera and Camilo Carvalho, not forgetting those who helped back stage to keep the performances running like clockwork. During such shows what crosses our mind at this time, there is no better place we would like to be.hearing Konkani music at its best and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved for putting on a champagne show at beer prices. Those who were unable to attend really did miss a magical Goan Christmas musical. We trust our visitors enjoyed their stay in London and Swindon and look forward to welcoming them again. May be not, suggests a study on the teaching of English in government-run primary schools. Reason being that teaching of English in most government primary schools is no more than a teacher reading aloud from a textbook with no effort to develop listening or speaking skills in children, familiarising them with the rhythm and joy of poetry, contextualise grammar, or pay attention to learning gaps. Policy planners need to 'rethink' about introduction of English as a medium of instruction from Class I, the study commissioned by the Union Human Resource Development Ministry said. English has been introduced at the primary level in 27 states, it is a subject in Class I in 18 states, and the medium of instruction in Nagaland, Jammu and Kashmir, and government model schools of Chandigarh and Maharashtra. While the early introduction of the language is in response to people's aspirations for quality education, experts opine that the language must be introduced at a relatively later stage and the mother tongue must be the medium of learning at primary level. Conducted by the National Council of Educational Research Training (NCERT), the study says, Teachers in all the states/UT have fallen into what is called 'the textbook trap'. The teachers and students were entirely dependent on the books. Most teachers begin their lessons by reading from textbooks, finish lessons abruptly, do not teach word/sentence patterns, resort to local languages and offer no opportunity to children to listen to spoken English or speak in the language. In classrooms, the participation of students in the learning process was less in all states except Tamil Nadu. At Level I - classes I and II - children only knew a few English words and phrases, could not read, write or speak simple and short sentences in English or narrate experiences, exchange ideas in the language even though they could recite poems and songs. The study, covering JK, Maharashtra, Nagaland, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Union territory of Chandigarh notes the 'dismal picture'. It recommends correctives, including training teachers to teach English as a language, usage of multi-media for training to avoid transmission loss, certificate programmes, focus on phonetics by teacher trainers and creative usage of textbooks, among other things.

[Goanet] Demand for Rs 1 cr each
I wonder if this is yet another attempt to make money on a large scale. Best regards, U. G. Barad South Goa ZP members want Rs 1cr each Author: TNN Publication: The Times of India Date: November 26, 2012 URL: http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-11-24/goa/35333675_1_zp-mem bers-zp-staff-south-goa-zp At the South Goa zilla panchayat quarterly meeting on Friday chairperson Nelly Rodrigues resolved to continue meetings with chief minister Manohar Parrikar to ensure that each member gets 1 crore to carry out works in their constituency. We have asked for a development grant of 50 lakh as general fund to each member for the implementation of subjects under the Panchayati Raj Act. We have also asked for an additional grant of 50 lakh to each member under octroi for rural infrastructure development works, said Rodrigues. She said her North Goa counterpart and the CM were met over the same. We met the chief minister recently. He heard our grievances and has assured us of making provisions for better financial support by next year, said Rodrigues. The meeting saw heated discussions on the shortage of ZP staff. It led to the ZP chief executive officer (CEO) K V Singnapurkar instructing the ZP members to officially intimate him if they needed to use any office staff. Following criticism from member Daya Pagi that ZP staff spent their time playing games on their designated office computers, Singnapurkar said all such programmes would be deleted from the computers in the office. He further said that each staff member would have to submit a daily record of their work to him. He promised to streamline the working of the ZP office as far as the clerical processes were concerned and said an e-governance set up would be in place by January 2013. Rodrigues told the members, We have conveyed to the chief minister our urgent requirement of more staff. We have asked that the vacant posts should be filled and new posts should be created. ZP members resolved to look for a new office complaining that their current office in Arlem, where the meeting was held, was too small and congested. Raising other issues, ZP member Krishna Velip stressed the need to get the directorate of panchayats to take up the matter of Cabo de Rama fort's conservation with the Archaeological Survey of India. The fort can be a good tourist destination and will bring about development to the nearby Rajbag beach where there have been some drowning incidents lately. Hopefully, lifeguards will also be appointed there soon, said Velip. ZP member Naunath Naik passed a resolution that copies of the minutes of the meeting should be made in Konkani and Marathi too for the benefit of all members. Pagi, in his scathing criticisms, lashed out at the government for its decision to allow bars to be open from 9am during the ongoing International film festival of India (Iffi) in Panaji. He also slammed the tourism minister's statement that floats from neighbouring states would be invited to participate in the state's traditional carnival parades. A two-minute silence was observed during the meeting to pay tribute to Shiv Sena founder-leader Balasaheb Thackeray who died recently. Janice Afonso, the zonal agricultural officer, Margao, also made a presentation to the ZP members on the various government schemes.

[Goanet] Just sharing a lovely post : ARE YOU HEARD ABOUT CUP OF COFFEE ON THE WALL?
ARE YOU HEARD ABOUT CUP OF THE COFFEE ON THE WALL?True one worth knowing.I sat with my friend in a well-known coffee shop in a neighboring town of Venice, the city of lights and water. As we enjoyed our coffee, a man entered and sat on an empty table beside us. He called the waiter and placed his order saying, ‘Two cups of coffee, one of them there on the wall.' We heard this order with rather interest and observed that he was served with one cup of coffee but he paid for two. As soon as he left, the waiter pasted a piece of paper on the wall saying ‘A Cup of Coffee’. While we were still there, two other men entered and ordered three cups of coffee, two on the table and one on the wall. They had two cups of coffee but paid for three and left. This time also, the waiter did the same; he pasted a piece of paper on the wall saying, ‘A Cup of Coffee’. It seemed that this gesture was a norm at this place. However, it was something unique and perplexing for us. Since we had nothing to do with the matter, we finished our coffee, paid the bill and left. After a few days, we again had a chance to go to this coffee shop. While we were enjoying our coffee, a man entered. The way this man was dressed did not match the standard nor the atmosphere of this coffee shop. Poverty was evident from the looks on his face. As he seated himself, he looked at the wall and said, one cup of coffee from the wall. The waiter served coffee to this man with the customary respect and dignity. The man had his coffee and left without paying. We were amazed to watch all this when the waiter took off a piece of paper from the wall and threw it in the dust bin. Now it was no surprise for us – the matter was very clear. The great respect for the needy shown by the inhabitants of this town welled up our eyes with tears. Coffee is not a need of our society neither a necessity of life for us. The point to note is that when we take pleasure in any blessing, maybe we also need to think about those people who appreciate that specific blessing as much as we do but they cannot afford to have it. Note the character of this waiter, who is playing a consistent and generous role to get the communication going between the affording and the needy with a smile on his face. Ponder upon this man in need….he enters the coffee shop without having to lower his self-esteem…he has no need to ask for a free cup of coffee…without asking or knowing about the one who is giving this cup of coffee to him…he only looked at the wall, placed an order for himself, enjoyed his coffee and left. When we analyze this story, along with the other characters, we need to remember the role played by the wall that reflects the generosity and care of the dwellers of this town A LOVELY GESTURE OF CARING AND SHARING WITH THE LESS FORTUNATE. COFFEE COULD JUST BE THE BEGINNING. MAYBE OTHERS COULD OCCASIONALLY SPONSOR BREAKFAST OR LUNCH DEPENDING ON WHAT THEY COULD SPARE.
[Goanet] Polish director shocked.
Goa needs to promote tourism for obvious reasons. However, how does one take care of the issues raised by Lech Majewski? Best Regards, Dr. U. G. Barad India shocks Polish director T Ramavarman,TNN | Nov 28, 2012, PANAJI: Eminent Polish film and theatre director Lech Majewski, who is a member of the jury for the international competition section of the International Film Festival of India (Iffi), was in a shock when he landed in India. The India I had in mind was entirely different from the India I saw. I thought India was a spiritual country. I became a poet after reading Rabindranath Tagore, when I was in college. But when I came here and saw the cultural expressions like cinema, I felt miserable. People in those films were behaving as if they have delirious convulsions, Lech Majewski told TOI. Majewski says the influence of tourism could be a major reason for the cultural decadence of India. The tourists, when they go to a different country, want to take their music, dance and other forms of art to their host country. But the loss India had to suffer has been severe. The influence of television could be another contributor for this decline. They bombard you with jazz music, and in the name of dancing, the people are seen behaving as if under the grip of a convulsive disease. Majewski, who had made the much-acclaimed film 'The Mill and the Cross based on a painting by the 16th century Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel, says technological advancements were yet to translate into good films. Now, more people are entering the film-making field, because of the fall in production costs, and the micro-reality from distant parts of the world are getting captured by them. But most of those films are deficit in the poetry, mystery, magic and intangibles that the medium is capable of portraying powerfully. The films are only capturing the physical reality and not the spiritual, Majewski said. http://sp.m.timesofindia.com/PDATOI/articleshow/17395145.cms http://sp.m.timesofindia.com/PDATOI/articleshow/17395145.cms
[Goanet] Goanet] Dabolim over Mopa
I think jc has come up with a brilliant idea and it makes sense. MP owes his election success to the people of Goa in particular to the Christians. He therefore has a vested interest, if indeed he is to seek reelection the next time, to at least preserve the coalition in tact.He therefore is in a situation where the Goan people can demand and he has to accede to their demands at least this one time. This will be his legacy to ensure that the right and sensible decision is negotiated in relation to the Dabolim issue. If jc can coordinate this meeting or meetings in order to facilitate this, then hats off to him and I for one would wish that for the sake of Goa, a realistic and plausible agreement is hammered out. We have, however to find an honest group of politicians willing to take up the matter and steer it to fruition let us challenge these MP's to take up the gauntlet and fight for this just cause.
