It is with amusement that I read that the communists have become lobbyist
for the mining industry!

Best regards,

The mining lobby on Wednesday attacked Goa Governor Bharat Veer Wanchoo,
calling him an agent of the Central government and accusing him of being
callous to those affected by the ban on iron ore mining in Goa.

Lobbyists seeking revocation of the ban on iron ore mining in the state
spoke to reporters after Wanchoo snubbed the pro-mining lobby protestors
who have been camping near the Martyrs' Memorial here for the last two
weeks.

On Wednesday morning, the Governor and other leading political dignitaries,
including Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, arrived at the memorial in the
capital to pay their tributes to Goa's freedom fighters. However, the
Governor returned to Raj Bhavan without speaking to protestors at the site.

He did not have the courtesy to address us. We have been protesting here
for the last two weeks. The Governor is not concerned about the sufferings
of the people of his state, Communist Party of India (CPI) state general
secretary Cristopher Fonseca told reporters here.

Fonseca heads the Goa Mining Affected People's Front, which is protesting
the loss of jobs caused by the Supreme Court-imposed mining ban.

Fonseca also said that the Goa government was not taking convincing steps to
resolve the mining crisis in the state.

It has been four months since the ban has been in place. The government has
not given a single convincing argument to the Supreme Court to ensure that
the ban is removed, Fonseca said.

This is very much in keeping with Uncle Marx's view of
thesis-antithesis-synthesis. Or so it seems to me.

In the meanwhile, the capitalist USofA is heavily dependent (financially,
tradewise, etc) on communist China.

What does that tell you? Marx was probably right :-)

[Goanet] Newly arrived for GBCN Birdwalk this Sunday

2013-02-01 Thread Birds

Hi All,

Especially arrived for Sunday's birdwalk is the Common buzzard which
made today its first appearance.

Besides the Common buzzard we can hope to see various other raptors such
as the White eyed buzzard, Eurasian harrier, Pallid harrier, Spotted
eagle, White bellied sea eagle, Shikra and, of course, plenty of kites.

Part of the walk will be up hill, a moderate climb, and, at some places
on the ground there are sharp stones and occasionally thorns, so good
shoes are advisable.

Looking forward meeting you all on Sunday.

With kind regards,
Fionna

Hi all,

The Goa Bird Conservation Network, an informal network of individuals
interested in birds and related issues, will conduct a birdwalk this
Sunday, the 3^rd of February 2013. The walk will traverse the
beautiful Pilerne Plateau, home to many resident and migrant birds.
Participants will be introduced to the basic concepts of birdwatching,
familiarized with the bird species that we encounter on the walk, and
given an idea of the larger conservation issues facing Goa's avifauna
in particular and our biodiversity in general. The walk is free and
open to all to participate. The meeting spot would be the Pilerne Lake
at 7.30 am, the walk is expected to last until 11 am. Those interested
in participating may please confirm by sending a mail to
rajivdsi...@gmail.com mailto:rajivdsi...@gmail.com.

Instructions for participants:

1.Although not essential, please bring along
binoculars/cameras/guidebooks if you have them.

2.Please wear dull-coloured clothes. This will enable us to get closer
to the birds without startling them.

3.Carry along snacks, drinking water and anything else you may need.

Warm regards,

Rajiv

[Goanet] Letter to the Editor: The AYES have it in Konkani

2013-02-01 Thread augusto pinto
Many people used to wonder why the Speaker of the Goa Assembly used to go
through the following'Aye'ritual when passing a motion or bill. This is
when the Speaker says - Those in favour of the motion/bill say Aye, (MLAs
in favour chant Aye) Those against say No (MLAs against chant No). Then the
Speaker says 'The Ayes (or Noes as the case may be) have it, the Ayes have
it, the Ayes have it. The motion is passed / rejected.' In fact there were
some who heard the phrase as 'The EYES have it...'

This phrase which originated in the House of Commons, the English
parliament. It originated at a time when there were no amplification
systems and the MPs voice needed to be heard if they wanted to raise an
objection. So in order that their voice could be heard and they would have
enough time for their objection to be heard by the Speaker of the House the
Speaker would repeat the phrase, 'The ayes have it ...' THREE times.

The current Speaker of the Goa Assembly Rajendra Arlekar has come up with
an innovation at least in the Goa Assembly. He says the 'Ayes ...' phrase
thus: 'Zanem hai mhuntat tanem hai mhunchem; Zanem nam mhuntat tanem na
mhunchem. Zankam hai/nam mhuntlam tankam zai tashem zalem.' He says this
phrase twice, (which is a mistake) and not thrice as should be done.

Anyway now no one need be confused as to why the Eyes have it!
