[Goanet] SMILE.................... IT'S WEEKEND (25/04/2013)

2013-04-25 Thread CAJETAN DE
ABOUT MY..

A man (Jakru) goes to his family doctor (Dr. Leitao) for a follow-up visit:-

Dr. Leitao: Yes Jakru, how is your cough now?

Jakru: It’s less than before.

Dr. Leitao: Look, it’s improved because you are on antibiotic, but…

Jakru: But? But what doctor?

Dr. Leitao: (Showing Jakru, his X-ray which was taken during his first visit)
Look Jakru as your family doctor I have to warn you that you got to stop
smoking, see your both lungs are damaged.

Jakru: I’ll try doctor.

Dr. Leitao: Try? No trying business. You should be ashamed of yourself. Even on
cigarette packs its clearly written that ‘Smoking cigarettes are injuries to
your health’. It’s the time to stop completely, otherwise I am afraid  soon you
will get Lung Cancer.

Jakru: Doctor, to tell you the truth, sometimes when I reflect back on all the
cigarettes I smoked, I feel ashamed. Then I look into the cigarette and think
about the workers in the cigarette factory and all of their hopes and dreams.
If I don’t smoke this cigarette, they might be out of work and their dreams
would be shattered, Then I say to myself, it's better that I smoke this
cigarette and let their dreams come true then be selfish and worry about my
LUNGS.

[Goanet] An Airport to Nowhere

2013-04-25 Thread D'Souza, Avelino
An Airport to Nowhere
Lionel Messias

We were the first to break the story on the airport at Chipi slowly getting off
the ground in Maharashtra's Sindhudurg district almost next door to Mopa, so
close in fact that when the planned Mopa airport is ready and running, pilots
wanting to land at Chipi might confuse the Mopa airport for it; and vice versa.
And we are not being funny, because this has happened around the world.
Goanspirit now has pictures of the site which prove that work on the Chipi
airport has started in right earnest. We also discovered that the land
acquisition in Chipi went through unopposed because the land the Maharashtra
Industrial Development Corporation chose was barren in the first place. All we
saw for kilometers and kilometers was hard rock and no vegetation of any kind
except for dried grass. And as you can see, pictures don't lie.

What also went well for the project was the fact that the people of Malvan, the
nearest town to Chipi are positive about the airport after a stuttering start,
including at least three bhoomi pujas according to the Malvan taluka Bharatiya
Janata Party president Vishnu Mondkar. We want Mopa also to come up as it
will benefit us, which corroborates what those against Mopa have been saying
all along, that it stands to benefit only south Maharashtra. According to him,
the land acquisition process for the Rs 510 crore 'Sea World' theme park
project, should also begin in a few months time. The world class project will
be implemented through the public private partnership (PPP) mode and the
viability gap funding by the state government will be Rs 100 crore. According
to him, the massive project is coming up in Tondavli in Malvan taluka. Mondkar
is himself in the tourism business and his firm Vighnaharta Tourism
Development Pvt. Ltd is currently on to a new project.

Chipi has people's blessings
A retired bank employee told Goanspirit that when the Chipi airport is ready,
it would facilitate people in the region to fly to Mumbai for specialized
medical treatment. Whereas, at the moment Goa's Dabolim airport offers the
only flight solution to Mumbai, he said, and an expensive one considering the
cab fare from Goa to here as also the three and a half hours it takes.

Land levelled for the project
Three villagers trudging home in the afternoon sun on the newly built road that
cuts a swathe between the land that has been acquired for Chipi appeared to
have no rancour. The airport should come up soon. They acquired 272 hectares
for the project, said one villager. While the project needed 250 acres of
land, more was acquired, says a Malvan resident.

With Narayan Rane, the minister for industry, port, employment and
self-employment and Sindhudurg MLA, also the district guardian minister, the
vast area will get whatever it wants and some. The same cannot be said for
vast areas around Mopa. Literally, the planned airport project in Goa is akin
to building an airport in the boondocks. Also in Chipi according to Mondkar,
there was never any agriculture or farming taking place. Perhaps, when Rane
invested in Hotel Green Park in Guirim, near Mapusa and in Hotel Neelam (named
after his wife) in Calangute, he was far more astute then he is given credit
for.

Who benefits
Sindhudurg district, several times bigger than Goa state, is serviced by the
Konkan railway which has a railway station at Sindhudurg, though only a few
trains stop there; and major railway stations at Kudal, Kanakavali and
Sawantwadi. Says Mondkar, Chipi is necessary because an estimated 1,50,000
tourists come annually to see the Sindhudurg fort in Malvan and they stay back
to travel, for instance, to another popular tourist destination,Tarkarli, just
a few kilometers from here. Less than the official 7 kms in fact, as the
beach town stretches towards Malvan (20-25 hotels) and has about 80 homestays
according to him. These are visible along the road to Tarkarli which again is
close to another tourist destination Devbaug (not to be confused with its
Devbhag in Karwar, Karnataka). Chipi when it is ready will service all these
popular-with-Maharashtrians tourist destinations. According to him, a popular
Indian hotel chain has bought land in Tambaldeg beach in Devgad taluka about 40
km from Malvan to build a hotel.

[Goanet] Believe it or not

2013-04-25 Thread Nelson Lopes
Believe it or not
crooks and swindlers are devising new ways to con unsuspecting people Their
ingenuity knows no bounds and one is simply astounded with a gaping mouth
at their audacity to strike wit impunity.
At a recent wedding at a Church in South Goa, a lady participant , well
dressed, volunteered to hold the overflowing gift envelopes for the bride,
There was no suspicion aroused in this benevolent act, since the bride must
have assumed that the said lady is from the groom side. It was much later
that realisation dawned upon the bride, when the crook made good her scape,
disappearing in thin air, unhindered and unnoticed
Gifts of envelopes also went missing at the wedding reception due to lack
of suspicion of such cheats operating in crowded receptions halls
Catholic weddings Bare unwieldy and free for all .Many a uninvited guests
attend and feast to their hearts content and this a regular phenomenon and
past time for some disguised as guests. The gifts should necessarily be
entrusted to known, close relatives and friends for safe keeping. At some
Hindu weddings there is no acceptance of gifts if there is a mention to
that effect. One is forced politely to take it back with no love lost or
considering it as an offence Gift cheques could be more secure and gifts
need not be carried at wedding receptions
The pilfering of wedding presents by well dressed individuals at the
reception is well known and care taken by placing a watch at all times The
latest improvisations is to remove the labels and replace them with their
own. Invitees still carry presents, unnecessarily in spite of the message
on the invitation cards The missing gift envelopes give no clue to the
identity of donors and that is the agony
At in another incident very recently, some one walked away , unnoticed,
coolly with a serving steel kettle for 100 cups, worth Rs 3000= Tea and
snacks were being served to the mourners at months mind. It is only at the
end that this missing vessel was noticed with horror and disgust
Our trust and confidence need to be re evaluated at all times and in all
places Eternal vigilance is the only and best assurance.

[Goanet] HERE COMES THE SUMMER

2013-04-25 Thread Arlette Azavedo
The song “Here comes the summer” reminds me that yet again summer is here
for us to enjoy and to discover what fun is all about. Well, summer
vacation during our school days used to be the best as those 2 months were
of all play, no books, no exams, and no rules. I am sure each one of us has
a long story to weave about this one. Each one of us has cherished memories
of our summer holidays and I for one used to wait for them as I could go
visiting my cousins and other relations and go and live by the beachside
which today is a dream. We would rent out a bungalow where all my siblings
and my cousins and the entire family, even our dog was tagged along where
we lived under one roof, in short it was one huge unending party for us. As
it was the season of mango and jackfruit, it was a season of fun and eating
which I so dearly missed now. Sad to say our children will never get such
fun times by the beachside as today going to the beach is another story by
itself as the beaches lack cleanliness and not safe too.

My memories of summer are filled with loads of carefree childhood moments,
lots of time with family and close relatives, totally unstructured and
un-planned. The scorching summer heat didn't really bother us that much
either and we were perfectly happy with a pedestal fan in the room and some
cool water from the mud pot or fridge and a dash of Nycil prickly heat
powder on the neck to ward off the heat. Sleeping outside in the broad
veranda with doors and windows wide open with no fear of any thieves with
the breeze swaying the trees in the yard, while we chatted about everything
under the sun and counted the stars up in the sky was an awesome way to end
each day.

Also, those days there were Beat Shows at Calangute beach which used to
draw a huge crowd. Apparently, this was a meeting place where we would be
meeting all our friends from far and near and as everyone was in a holiday
mood it was indeed a colourful and vibrant feeling. My parents and my
brothers pampered treating me with ice-creams which thrilled me as they met
up with their friends. Oh, those were the days and they were my best summer
holidays then.

Life those days was simple with simple aspirations; so generally, we always
had a good time. Those days are never going to come back and I guess our
next generation will somehow always miss the joys in simple things like
playing in the sand and making sandcastles. I cherish those days called
Summer Holidays for a reason and we made the most of it.

I end with a verse from Cliff Richards “Summer Holidays” - “We're going
where the sun shines brightly,

We're going where the sea is blue,

We've all seen it on the movies,

Now let's see if it's true”
