Ranveer Singh's New Gangnam Style
The event was the launch of Samsung's new mobile device the 'S4'. At the
launch were present Bollywood celebs and cricketers such as Ranveer
Singh, Aditya Pancholi, Aditya Roy Kapur, Aftab Shivdasani, Arshad
Warsi, Adam Gilchrist and many more. At the event Ranveer gave his twist
on the famous song 'Gangnam Style'

This video of the national launch will get far more coverage publicity

works in age of social media.

What Crap!
Manohar Parrikar does not know what to quote in
what context.
What has the stoning of an adultress to do with
appointing CIC? Manohar Parrikar wants a 'laloo' in that post. And Aires has

[Goanet] Ladies Special bus - Goa

2013-05-01 Thread Mario Andrew Rodrigues

Dear CM Parrikar, Mr. Almeida,
THANK YOU for this wonderful exclusive Ladies special bus. Sincerely appreciate
this gesture. Proud of doing something first in India. Keep up the good
work/service. God Bless. RegardsMario

PANAJI/MARGAO/VASCO: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, along with
Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) chairman, Mr Carlos Almeida, on Tuesday,
flagged off ladies special bus from the Panaji bus stand.
After flagging off the bus, Mr Parrikar and Mr Almeida had a brief
interaction with women to get feedback on the initiatives taken by the
government to empower women and to ensure their security and safety.
Mr
Parrikar said that it is the endeavour of the government to ensure safe
environment for women in Goa and more steps would be taken in future for their
betterment.
Earlier, Mr Almeida said that perhaps, this must be first time in
the country that special regular bus service for women has been
introduced.
He said that constant monitoring would be done to ensure that
this initiative of the state government is proving beneficial for women.
At
Margao, the Minister for Transport, Mr Ramakrishna Dhavalikar, said that the
government is committed to provide better facilities to women commuters and
therefore five ladies special KTC buses have been introduced on the major
routes
in
the state.
Speaking to the media after inaugurating the Margao-Panaji
bus service, the Minister said the government had promised in the Assembly that
as soon as the first lot of 100 buses comes, ladies special buses would be
introduced in Goa.
“I am happy that today the promise has been fulfilled,” he
said and added that the government had gathered data on women commuters before
these buses were launched.
On Tuesday, the government introduced one bus from
Margao to Panaji that will make two trips - one in the morning at 8.30 and the
second at 6 in the evening.
“If it gets good response, we would add more
buses,” he disclosed when asked whether one bus would cater to the needs of the
women commuters.
In Vasco, the Power Minister, Mr Milind Naik flagged off the
ladies special bus. He said the state government has fulfilled one more
assurance given to the people by introducing such buses in the state.
He
said there was a need for introducing ladies special buses as a large number of
women commuters are facing a lot of problems while travelling on day-to-day
basis.
He informed that the number of such buses would be increased in future
according to the response that they get from women commuters.

[Goanet] Vijai Sardesai plays the “Mopa” card against Parrikar, - thegoan.net

2013-05-01 Thread Camillo Fernandes

Vijai Sardesai plays the “Mopa” card against Parrikar, kick starting a new
political movement and a serious opposition forceTeam Goan ,Margao19 January
2013

In no other state in India does the taxi business influence the ebb and flow of
politics, as it does in Goa. Many a political driving seat is established if
you get your taxi politics right. The Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai took his
little steps towards being the man of the moment, by attending an
inconsequential Annual General meeting of the Black and Yellow Taxi Owners
Association a few days before the launch of his Goemkar movement. On the day of
his January 15 rally to launch Goemkar, with the movement against the Mopa
airport and the protection of Dabolim as the emotive trigger, the black and
yellow cabbies decided to participate. A worried industries minister Milind
Naik called and asked them why they were participating in Vijay’s rally. But
another man was hurt even more. Naik’s neighbor and sulking Congressman Mauvin
Godinho, who has a strong base of cabbie supporters of the black and yellow
kind.He was shocked with the reply “The issue is too big. We have to support
anyone who wants Dabolim’s development and is against Mopa.”As he launched his
movement, apparently non-political, there was politics dripping from every
pore. In a trademark that is so his, Sardesai makes up for a lack of a mass
base and a groundswell of pan Goa support, with his uncanny nose of smelling a
political scoring opportunity.Goemkar would have been just another
opportunistic flirtation. But he has injected political romance by pegging the
movement around protecting Dabolim as an international airport and opposing the
Mopa airport tooth and nail. This is heartstring politics, which is making both
Chief Minister Parrikar and the stray pieces of the Congress cagey. The
Congress’ desperate defense is to shout out loud that it retains the patent of
Salcette’s opposition to the Mopa airport and dismisses Sardesai. But the
frustration of people like Fransisco Sardinha is apparent when he says “My
advice to those who joined him is to bell the cat and voice your opinion, but
don’t mix with these frauds who were very much a part of the previous
government.” Sardinha’s amnesia that the government was his too, is appalling.
Sardinha’s letter to the Civil Aviation ministry, as Chief Minister asking it
to “expedite” the Mopa airport, will make him a virtual cast away in Salcette
Mauvin Godinho, who has his own issues with the Congress, gives Sardesai no
credit. “All this has happened because of the Congress relies on the same old
leadership and doesn’t listen to genuine feedback. The issue is important but
people will have to see who they are supporting.” Godinho isn’t likely to get
this space back anytime soon himself. Widely regarded as the villain of the
piece, in the land de-notifi cation saga, where 36,800 square meters of land
earmarked for parking at Dabolim was handed back to Bernard Costa, who in turn
sold land to builder Anand Bose, Godinho has taken a credibility hit. But the
biggest take away from the formation of Goemkar is that it has pitchforked
Sardesai into a one to one straight combat with Chief Minister Parrikar,
especially in Salcette. This is a major irony since the most natural
beneficiary of Congress’ corruption by de-notifying the Dabolim land would have
been Parrikar.Activist Joao Philippe Pereira, who has fi led a PIL for the land
for Dabolim to be taken back, says “ Section 6 of the Land Acquisition act was
allowed to be lapsed on June 15, 2002 by not paying compensation to the land
owner, paving the way for returning the land to him. After this it became
difficult to re-notify the land. The CM must answer as to why he did
this.”Giving the Dabolim land back would have given Parrikar the cushion
against a Salcette backlash, in his efforts to speed work on Mopa. Here,
without wanting to, Parrikar is being seen by a Salcette that whole heartedly
voted for him, as the man on the other side of the bridge that divides north
and south Goa, the line of separation between pro and anti Mopa forces. His
move to invoke Section 6 and acquire 22 lakh square metres of land in Mopa, on
Thursday Jan 17, through a nine page notice in a local daily, (incidentally two
days after the Goemkar rally) has sharpened the backlash. Predictably Sardesai
has reacted. “The Chief Minister has shown scant respect for the people who
wanted Mopa land acquisitions to be stopped.People are seeing a huge haste in
commissioning land for Mopa and no haste in getting land for parking in
Dabolim.” The Goemkar bandwagon can trudge along and pick up new passengers.
Firstly Salcette’s non-Congress MLAs supporting the BJP government – Caitu
Silva, Avertano D Souza, Benjamin Silva, Rajan Naik and Mickky Pacheco – will
have to find ways to support the issue without supporting Vijai’s formation. The
challenge will be to see that

[Goanet] The recent economic blockade

2013-05-01 Thread Desmond Monteiro
The recent economic blockade (or more correctly, the blackmail) by states
supplying vegetables, milk and other essentials to Goa only underscores the
fact that Goa absolutely has to be as self-sufficient as possible.

It is no secret that middlemen from other states have invaded and taken
control of our Goan markets. Even the prices are dictated by these people.
They force vendors to stock fruit and vegetables from outside Goa at the
expense of our own local produce. As a result, our own unique Goan
varieties are slowly being pushed out and may eventually become extinct.

When was the last time anyone bought and tasted a real `ghaunti` papaya,
the type we used to enjoy earlier? Berries like chunam, kandam, local boram
and jamuns are slowly dwindling. Neighbouring states take pride in their
vegetables and fruit. An example is the encouragement given to the
cultivation of Ratnagiri Afonso mangoes which are supplied all over India
(even to Goa) and are now famous all over the world. Yet in complete
contrast, in the land of mancurado mangoes, we hear from an expert like Dr.
Ajit Shirodkar that there is not even a single orchard of mancurado mangoes
in Goa! With declining produce of our own mancurado mangoes, how many Goans
can afford to pay Rs. 800 - 1000/- for a dozen mangoes?

Rather than encouraging polluting industries that destroy our very land to
come and set up here, can we not encourage agriculture, spice farms and
cultivation of our own local vegetables and fruits? The ICAR can be roped
in to help in keeping alive and improving local varieties. A school in
Velsao has set the ball rolling by giving children the opportunity to
cultivate vegetables as part of their extra-curricular activities, which
they do with much enthusiasm. Initiatives like this must be encouraged.
I hope that this monsoon season our Government and in particular, the
Minister for Forests and Environment, Alina Saldanha, will ensure planting
of at least 5 thousand fruit bearing trees, distributing vegetable seeds
and encouraging planting all over Goa. Similarly, I hope that the Forest
Department who has been doing yeoman service at their Campal office by
supplying plants and saplings at very reasonable rates, will supply
fruit-bearing grafts, saplings and vegetable seeds of local varieties this
monsoon season to encourage cultivation.

Times of India works to “sex it up” to strengthen relationship with

29 April 2013 ·

The Times of India is finding innovative ways to create quality advertising
that captures the voice and culture of the people.

Times of India CEO Ravi Dhariwal presented several examples of commercials
the news media company used to promote the unique ideas that go into the
publication.

Times of India President Arunabh Das Sharma went through the steps of the
innovative ways they are redefining their news brand, some of which include
maximising the company’s advertising with the inclusion of fragrant
advertisements and attaching samples of products to the newspaper.

These innovations increase profit margins and market share as well as build
loyalty and repeat business.

Shrijeet Mishra, COO of Times of India, said India is a great land of
opportunity because entrepreneurs are racing to the top. The Times of India
is capitalising on this by partnering with entrepreneurs and first-time
advertisers with its innovative advertising method called “brand capital.”
It’s success has made the method a keystone of their business model.

[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] 6th Sunday of Easter

2013-05-01 Thread Jude Botelho
29-Apr-2013

Dear Friend,

While we yearn for the presence and company of loved ones and friends, we are
sorrowful and do not like partings and goodbyes! We don't easily cope with loss
especially when we get used to having people near us. Yet we mature and grow
only when we can handle separations and losses in our lives. God is present
even when He appears to be absent! Discern His peace-giving presence this
weekend! Fr. Jude

Sunday Reflections: 6th Sunday of Easter Peace is a gift of the Lord, our
task, working for it! 5-May-2013
Readings: Acts 15: 1-2, 22-29Rev. 21: 10-14, 22-23John 14: 23-29

The first reading from the Acts reminds us of the conflict that arose in the
early Christian community precisely because it had so many people joining it.
To a Jew, circumcision was most sacred. Other recent converts did not see the
need to undergo it. For these converts Jesus alone mattered and accepting Him.
This conflict divided the early Christian community and disturbed the peace
needed for its growth. How does the Christian community manage this conflict?
They decide to meet together and discern what God was saying. In keeping our
peace in changing times and changing situations in the Church today, we need
discernment and an openness to the Spirit.

I give you my peace
A retired couple was alarmed by the threat of nuclear war, so they undertook a
serious study of all the inhabited places on the globe. Their goal was to
determine where in the world would be a place to be least likely affected by a
nuclear war. -A place of ultimate security. They studied and travelled,
travelled and studied. Finally they found the place and at Christmas they sent
their friend a card from their new home - in the Falkland Islands. However,
their 'paradise' was soon turned into a war zone by Great Britain and
Argentina. -Jesus said, Peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Not as the
world gives do I give you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be
afraid. Jesus before departing from this earth, He gave his disciples the best
and the most needed gift: His peace.
John Rose in 'John's Sunday Homilies'

In the Gospel we have yet another source of conflict that disturbs the apostles
and disciples of the Lord. They know that Jesus is going to leave them as he
has accomplished his mission on earth and is about to return to his Father. His
imminent departure makes them fearful. How will they manage without him? How
will the Community grow? Will they succeed in the mission he has entrusted to
them? Jesus has to reassure his disciples that it is good for Him to go so that
He might send the Spirit to be with them always. All this while He was
physically present to them. He wants to be more intimately present to them and
for this to happen He has to leave them. But he is leaving behind His Word and
those who keep his word will experience His presence in their lives. Those who
love me will keep my word and my Father will love them and will come to them
and make our home with them. Jesus reassures his disciples that the Father is
always very near to them.  Our
faith has to be a response to God's love. Jesus came to tell us this good
news. The whole of the Gospel has just this message: The Father loves you and
is watching over you. In order to experience the loving Spirit of the Father at
work in our lives it was necessary that Jesus should leave his disciples. It is
necessary that we walk through this world, at times seemingly alone. It is
necessary that we be tested by trials and face conflicts but we need not be
afraid, the Father is standing guard always! The gift of the Spirit that Jesus
promises us is the gift of peace. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to
you. I do not give it as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled,
do not let them be afraid.

Peace in the midst of conflict
In his book 'Go down to the Potter's House,' Donagh O'Shea has a story about a
king who had two artists in his court who were bitter rivals. One day the king
said, I want to decide once and for all who is the better artist. You must
paint the same theme so I can judge between you. And let the theme be peace.
The two artists agreed and a week later came back with their paintings. The
first presented his painting. It showed a dreamy landscape with rolling hills
and a lake with not a ripple on the surface. The whole scene spoke of
contentment, peace and stillness. However, the king said to the artist: Your
picture is very pretty, but it puts me to sleep. The second artist presented
his work. It showed a thundering waterfall. It was so realistic that one could
almost hear the roar of the water as it crashed onto the rocks, hundreds of
feet below. But this is not the scene of peace that I ordered, said the king
angrily. The artist made no reply but
motioned to continue looking. Then the king spotted a detail that hitherto had
escaped him: among the rocks at the base of the

(http://www.darrylwilliamsmusic.com) A naturally gifted musician, San Diego
born bassist Darryl Williams began playing bass at the young age of 13. Within
two years he was playing at local clubs and events around the San Diego area,
which includes opening up for smash RnB group Lakeside. He also played with
Gospel Legend Shirley Caesar at age 16. After graduating from high school,
Williams did a four-month tour of Japan with other young talented musicians,
which he states as being unforgettable. Upon returning to the States, that
same band did a three-month tour opening for soul legend Al Green. After that
tour, Darryl enrolled in the Jazz Program at San Diego State University and
studied with San Diego legends Gunner Biggs and Rick Helzer. With a hunger to
grow musically, he sought out other teachers as well which includes former
Miles Davis and John Coltrane bassist Marshall Hawkins, Sarah Vaughn bassist
Bob Magnusson, great San Diego bassist Cecil Mcbee Jr. and San Diego
  sax icon Hollis Gentry III.

By age 21, Williams was a regular on the San Diego music scene performing
regularly with artist like Hollis Gentry, Evan Marks and Patrick Yandall to
name a few. In 1997, Williams moved to Las Vegas and performed regularly at all
the prestigious Hotels and Casinos working with headliners and recording

[Goanet] Goa Diary: Bullfight, booze on beach BJP leader’s oops moment (FIRST POST)

*Goa Diary: Bullfight, booze on beach BJP leader’s oops moment

Over-eager BJP ‘breaks’ a Catholic Commandment

With its minority outreach programme still in infancy, one really shouldn’t
be too harsh on the Bharatiya Janata Party folks for almost breaking a key
Commandment. In Goa, after being recently elevated to the post of national
secretary, Arti Mehra, the party’s overseer for Goa affairs, almost
committed ‘blasphemy’, by violating a native variant of the commandment
‘Thou shalt not take the Lord’s name in vain’.

During her Goa visit in April, the feisty Mehra had said that the BJP’s
effort of reaching out to the minority Catholic community and its leaders
like the Arch Bishop (actually during a press conference Mehra said that
she had met Goa’s Pope—Lord Bless Pope Francis—before she was corrected)
had paid off in the March 2012 Goa polls. Mehra even went on to say that
she had met the Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao ahead of the elections, which
the BJP won after fielding an unprecedented eight Catholic candidates.

A couple of days after her statement, the Church issued a response denying
the suggested meeting. “It has also been stated that the BJP national
secretary had a private audience with the Archbishop, as part of the
pre-polls BJP campaign. It is clarified hereby that no such meeting did
ever take place,” spokesperson for the Arch Bishop Fr. Francisco Caldeira
clarified. From Fr. Caldeira’s written rebuttal it does appear that Mehra
had taken the name of the Archbishop, the spiritual leader of Roman
Catholics in Goa, in vain.

The BJP has been silent on the issue since. But really Arti ji, there’s
nothing that a discreet visit to the confession booth will not cure and
heal.

Take cover Soccer; Bullfighting kicks up a dust storm

Football had better beware. Because the clamour to revive bullfighting or
dhirio in Goa just got official. Portly poet Vishnu Wagh, a debutant in the
state assembly on Monday made an impassioned plea to restart the bloodsport
of bullfighting in Goa.

And it certainly got Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar‘s ear. “Dhirios should
be revived at the earliest. Thousands of Goans are going to Maharashtra for
bullfights. It used to be our tradition,” Wagh told the House.

A typical dhiri (singular for dhirio) involves two specially reared
fighting bulls, with humps the size of a few giant-sized pomfrets patched
together, head-butting each other until the loser scampers away from the
makeshift ring. The two bovines, who use their horns to good effect, goring
their opponent at every opportunity, are egged on by thousands of baying
spectators and gamblers who bet huge sums of money on their favoured animal.

Until it was banned by the high court in the late nineties, bullfighting
almost rivaled football in Goa, as far as popularity was concerned. But the
ban too doesn’t mean that bullfighting has stopped after all.

The banned sport is perhaps one of the most sought after contraband in the
sub districts of Salcete and Tiswadi, where a missed call or a text message
that simply says “COME” at 6:30 am means jumping out of bed and rushing to
a pre-determined, but secluded coconut grove or paddock, where a couple of
bulls are head-banging. And a crowd of a few hundred milling, cursing,
goading, shouting around them.

Over the years Goan legislators claim to be a harangued lot, with bullfight
aficionados repeatedly demanding that the fights be revived. Parrikar
himself says that with Vishnu’s plea on the floor of the House, he as well
as other legislators would now be besieged with phone calls urging the Goa
government to revive bullfights.

What to do Mr. Parrikar? Shall we just blame it on Goa’s Iberian connection?

Yay… Goa makes it to Wikileaks. Finally!

The latest installment of diplomatic cables released by Wikileaks may not
have created a buzz in the corridors of power in New Delhi, but the tiny
state of Goa was humbled by several references to it, in the leaked
missives.

One leaked cable authored by Paul Folmsbee, Mumbai consul general of the US
embassy in 2009, pretty much demolished Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s
written response tabled during the ongoing budget session, in which he
categorically denied the existence of foreign mafia in Goa.

Quoting celebrated cop Rakesh Maria, then Mumbai Crime Branch head and
currently head of Maharashtra’s anti-terrorism squad, Folmsbee said in his
cable to Washington: “Maria alleged that most trafficking of foreigners to
Mumbai is connected to Russian and Israeli mafia operations in Goa,
explaining why the Mumbai Police had not cracked the trafficking ring(s)”.

Parrikar’s political detractors however say that one should not take the
chief minister’s denials too seriously. “Why, after campaigning against
illegal mining for over seven years, Parrikar

Subject: [Goanet] Off topic: The joys of offshore banking

Folks,
Strangely?enough, tiny Cyprus seems to be sending the correct message to all
those who send their money abroad so as to escape taxes. The message is:
Pay your taxes at home and let the local economy benefit from your
deposits or let the tax haven banks decide what to do with your money.
Mervyn1650

There is quite a lot to say about the 'correctness' of the message, but it
should be clear that hi-spirited Mervyn is (at least) 30 years behind
schedule.

Pay your taxes at home and let the local economy benefit might have had
some validity then, but now paying taxes mainly means shoring up failing -
'but too big to fail' - banks, and the financial system in general - a
bottomless pit with all of us simply waiting for the day of reckoning.

What 'Cyprus' inaugurated, and what Jeroen Dijsselbloem, our (NL) genial
finance minister and chair of the Euro-group, emphasized - before hastily
retracting his words once the intended damage had been done - is the
generalized dispossession of the ordinary citizenry in favor of big
corporate entities en fat corporate individuals. This will be done in
three stages: (i) relentless 'hunt' of tax dodgers squirreling funds
offshore - but leaving corporates, both companies and individuals,
shielded, or even more favored as before, like the Netherlands do - a
conspicuous tax paradise for multinationals; (ii) dispossession of
individual assets (especially real estate) through punitive wealth
taxation (with monies so collected going towards 'saving' 'the system'),
again, with leaving corporates unaffected; and (iii) last but not least,
'bail-in' of failing banks by seizing individual deposits (again, - etc.),
even within the 'sacrosanct' 100K Euro guarantee - that was what
Dijsselbloem termed 'a workable scenario for the future'.

All this will result in the ultimate victory of 'disaster capitalism',
i.e. the definitive shift of resources and incomes from households to
firms, which is, ad fundum, what the whole 'modern' economy is about.

No cheers from patrizio Dnooos!

Re: [Goanet] Mining does not help Goans- goanspirit.com -by Lionel Messias

2013-05-01 Thread Venantius J Pinto
Thanks Camillo.

Way to go Lionel. It helps to paint character portraits as devices that aid
memory. Metaphor after all is when certain qualities, attributes in one
thing / aspect are seen in something else. In general and for reasons hard
to pin--too many of our people are very slow to get a grip on things. In
essence pointing out: we the people without the SUVs, pony tails, designer
clothes, Page 3 mentions and that swagger that comes with piles of cash,
engraves the decrepitude and affirms in image to the sodden mind (aka frak
mendu).

A certain kind of modernity is being played out in Goa. And the more I
think (and its easy to accuse me of self-hatred, but I am not blowing wind)
even the ones who want lucked out. It was not effort in the way one things
of process and progress (whatever one may think that be for ones own). What
is sad is that how the Upper Classes and those with their hands at the till
have managed to explain what it is that modernity delivers.

You put it well in conveying that although it does, it does not for the
many (forget the all). India should have gone a different route, and Goa
certainly could have. The eyes of these bastards says it all, but few have
that ability now to see. We have lost the ability my grandfather did and I
have to see minds. Frightening? Not at all.

Change also comes when people of the same ilk, as in say caste break rank.
But such has not been the case or a gift to our sanity. Even their
well-wishers and some of their supporters to a large degree are temporarily
on the sideline on account of feeling insulted being of the same temper
shall we say. Say boo, and the glue will hold together fast.

The breakdown is complete. Its not that Goans do not want jobs. Its that
one should not be made to do a job when the job creators are high on their
shastric pedestals. Demanding obeisance. Basically seeing it as their
patrimony and that theirs is the only way you could have a job--by
grovelling. Its the same old same old in a modern package. To come close to
sounding crotchety: Instead of Ruby undergarments for the wives its now
Victorias Secret, and upwards. Then its riling up all and sundry if some
bloke draws a pale assed drawing. What a Kalyugian joke. Such Bakasurian
appetites. Not even cannibals eat their own (far as I know).

Or to put Boyles Law in perspective for our politico-engineers: The angle
of the dangle is equal to the mass of the arse provided the heat of the
meat is constant! Hem gheyat. Vadat. Piyat. Nidat, Niyal korit mog korat,
ani itor.

Enuf for now.

 Lion Roars - 2
April 22-28, 2013Mining doesn?t help GoansThey keep telling us how the
tourism industry is our savior notwithstanding our firm dependence on St
Francis Xavier. They said the same about the mining industry, only we
discovered that some of the biggest gainers were a few of the men who turn
out as your duly elected MLAs, and particularly even those who contested
and lost. The thousands that get the fringe jobs because of the mining
industry are largely migrant workers. Many of the barge owners too are
non-Goans or politicians with deep pockets. And that goes for the barge
crew too. Point is the tourism industry really doesn?t help you and I, the
real aam aadmi. In other words, we the people without the SUVs, pony
tails, designer clothes, Page 3 mentions and that swagger that comes with
piles of cash.Point is also, tourism has also degraded Goa to the worst
extent. Only, it has never been recognized as so. With the exception of
perhaps two originally Goan owned 5-star hot
els, all the rest are owned by big chains based outside Goa. If my
memory services me correct, no Goan has built possibly even a single
3-star-upwards hotel in Goa in the last decade. On the other hand, take
the case of the shack owners who literally have to beg for a license on
which the government has put a cap and which as happened this year, were
issued quite late in the day. But when it comes to licensing hotels, it
matters little where you want to build one.Ordinary stakeholders can?t
protest evenIn fact if you are an MLA like independent Rohan Khaunte it
could be a breach of privilege if you protest outside his office, as come
cab drivers found out this month. The Goa Speaker Rajendra Arlekar called
it an attempt to intimidate Khaunte. The first time MLA invoked the cab
drivers wrath when he said in a legislative debate that taxi drivers were
fleecing customers, esapecially tourists. We ask where in India do cabbies
not fleece you? Might we add that in Goa, the
y are also rude and bully you on the road. A millionaire businessman

It is a local landmark. It draws huge crowds and causes traffic logjam and all
of the 2000 loaves baked here every single day are sold outJoyce Dias / The
Goan 20 April 2013

There is no name and no signboard. But the warm, sweet smell of freshly baked
bread is enticing enough to lead one to the doorstep of the bakery that is
famous for its pão, polleo and katrepão.Established by Joaquim Andrade over a
century ago, the quaint bakery stands at the corner of the Civil Court in
Margão. Part of Andrade’s former residence, the bakery and its neighbourhood
have changed little in the last 100 years; except for the fact that today yeast
is used in place of toddy as a raising agent and the neighbouring Portuguese
prison was converted into the present Civil Court. A huge earthen wood-fired
oven takes centre-stage; the firewood lending the baked breads its unique
flavour. “The bakery has been handed down since three generations. I am happy
to be carrying on my grandfather’s legacy,” says Caetano, who manages and runs
the bakery today. Caetano’s parents Custodio and Hortença ran the bakery before
him. “Hortença was a kind and wonderful person. When people had no money to buy
bread, she gave it away for free,” says Alvito Fernandes, who has lived next
door to the bakery since 1971.“Shortage of labour is the biggest problem
because of which many bakeries have been forced to shut shop,” says Caetano.
“In my mother’s day, we had a man from Majorda called Tetereolino Fernandes
who worked at the bakery for 45 years,” he adds.Come 8.30 pm and the hordes
arrive. From as near as Comba and as far as Colva, people and poders throng
here to buy the hot, sweet-smelling bread. “Everyone in my family, especially
my elderly father loves the pão from here. The workers are always cheerful,”
says Nitin Nagvekar, a civil engineer from Fatorda. “This bread is for my
supper, I am working the night shift,” says a policeman. Within two hours, all
of the 2000 bread are sold out. The empty bread baskets are turned over and the
lights are switched off as the workers call it a day.

calculations that Dabolim airport will be saturated in 2017 and where the
funding for Mopa will come from when the Goa government is requesting the
Airports authority of India for funds to complete the dividers and other
parking requirements.Convenor Fr Eremito Rebelo said that he took the
initiative to lead this movement when he read in the local newspapers that late
Matanhy Saldanha had compromised on the Mopa airport which according to him was
far from the truth. In his opinion, the Mopa airport is a huge land scam on the
Goan people with politicians and their next of kin having vested interests
having invested in huge properties in Pernem. Develop Pernem by all means, but
no Mopa airport, he said.He called for moblization of people for another
meeting at Lohia Maidan, Margao on May 15

[Goanet] where is my world leading me to ?

2013-05-01 Thread Ana Maria Fernandes
Michael Fernandes told me to become a nun. God gave me a vocation and got me
married to a nice young understanding huslband who gave me love and five nice
children. Bravo. I have loved not only my husband but his parents too and my
beautiful five children. 3 girls and 2 boys. I had left my job because my
husband wanted me to be with our children and presto my children are angels
from the sky. I was a girl from below poverty with no help from any christian ,
or a ny religious etc. People around us did not know that we existed. Why talk
about christianity, catholicism, feasts, and this and that when we did not have
food to eat ? Today my heart cries when I see a beggar taking food from the
dustbin and eatingwe waste oil on statues of our lady for
favours when 38% of christians cannot afford to eat a nice fried fish. We burn
candles when people live in darkness. Do these unwanted feast help us in anyway
? 98% of catholics do not know what they are praying. Please be sincere and not
be hypocrates. Let us be like Jesus who said this is a spade and call it a
spade.
