[Goanet] Most racist countries - dailymail.co.uk

2013-05-16 Thread Camillo Fernandes
Map shows world's 'most racist' countries (and the answers may surprise
you)Hong Kong, Bangladesh, Jordan and India named least tolerant countriesU.S.,
Britain, Canada and South America are among the least racistSurvey asks people
if they would want neighbours of a different race
By HUGO GYE

An international poll has revealed the world's least tolerant countries - with
Hong Kong at the top of the list and Britain at the bottom. The global social
attitudes study claims that the most racially intolerant populations are all in
the developing world, with Bangladesh, Jordan and India in the top five.
By contrast, the study of 80 countries over three decades found Western
countries were most accepting of other cultures with Britain, the U.S., Canada
and Australia more tolerant than anywhere else.
Enlarge Racism: This map shows the nations of the world where people have the
most and least tolerant attitudesThe data come from the World Value Survey,
which has been measuring the social attitudes of people in 80 different
countries, as reported by the Washington Post.
The survey asked respondents in more than 80 different countries to identify
kinds of people they would not want as neighbours. Some respondents, picking
from a list, chose 'people of a different race'. More...Which is the world's
most mobile country? Migration map reveals the populations with itchy feetThe
more frequently that people in a given country say they did not want neighbors
from other races, the economists reasoned, the less racially tolerant you could
call that society. The country with the highest proportion of 'intolerant'
people who wanted neighbours who were 'the same opinions was Hong Kong, where
71.8 per cent of the population would refuse to live next to someone of a
different race.
Next were Bangladesh on 71.7 per cent, Jordan on 51.4 per cent and India with
43.5 per cent.
Intolerant: A survey found that Hong Kong had the most people professing racist
views of any countryRacist views are strikingly rare in America, according to
the survey, which claims that only 3.8 per cent of residents are reluctant to
have a neighbour of another race.Other English-speaking countries once part of
the British Empire shared the same tolerant attitude - fewer than five per cent
of Britons, Canadians, Australians and New Zealanders showed signs of racism.
Similarly, fewer than one in 20 people in most South American countries
admitted harbouring prejudice against other races.
Diverse: The multicultural U.S. is among the least racially intolerant
countries, according to the dataThe Middle East, which is currently dealing
with large numbers of low-skilled immigrants from south Asia, seems to be a
hotbed of racial tension.
Europe is remarkably split - the west of the continent is generally more
tolerant than the east, but France is a striking outlier with 22.7 per cent of
the French rejecting neighbourhood diversity.
Some have pointed out problems in the survey data, claiming that because the
polls span a long period of time they are an unreliable guide to current
attitudes.
However, a more serious flaw could be the fact that in most Western countries
racism is so taboo than many people will hide their intolerant views and lie to
the questioners.

[Goanet] An attempt at Okee Pokee in Konkanim

2013-05-16 Thread Venantius J Pinto
 Hi all,
Sharing my translation of Okee-Pokee. We had this in school, and found it
online. I do not know the author.
As usual, I would appreciate any corrections or suggestions. In some cases,
I have simplified, and also used Konkani from various inflections--which is
my lot in any case. Thats life, the solitariness which compares favorably
in my minds eye with distance running.

Thank you.

Loved her lord above everything
And dressed him up for the party.

Satins and silks the Queen did lack,
But she'd some red paint that looked well on black,
So she painted her lord and master's back
Before he went out to the party.

Crowns and stars, and ships with sails,
And flying dragons with curly tails-
"That's a dress," said the Queen, "that never fails
To charm all folks at a party."

So, painted up till he looked his best,
With pipe in mouth and feather in crest,
Okee-Pokee marched out without a coat or vest,
But yet in full dress, to the party.

[Goanet] Sad days for Benefica fans

2013-05-16 Thread Eugene Correia
In between the Special Status and the Mopa-Dabolim "matches" it was a big
relief to watch football.
I was caught between two favourites -- Chelsea and Benefica while watching
the Europa League final. It was a both an ectasy and agony for me to see
one team win and the other lose. I have been following English football
more than the Portuguese one, and should admit that I was happy that
Chelsea triumphed. A little of my heart sank with Benefica's dashed hopes,
especially so when the team displayed such fine movements in the first half
and missed scoring from the few opportunities they had. The Eagles couldn't
land a goal in this dominating period.
That Benefica was defeated by a goal in the "stoppage" time was
heart-breaking for me as much it should have been for the team and its
fans. It was a repeat of what I experienced when, over the weekend,
Benefica suffered similar fate against Porto in the Portuguese league
match. Porto's late goal has left Benefica with an outside chance of
regaining the league title. One one point is seprating league holders and
top-placed Porto and Benefica. In their last games, to be held on May 19,
Benefica play lowly-place Moreirense FC, while Porto plays third-paced
Paços de Ferreira.
Even if Benefica wins, it would need Porto to lose to Pacos, a distinct
impossibility.
On Sunday, the focus was on the Barcelona vs Athletico Madrid match, though
Barcelona had retained the title even before going into this match as Real
Madrid had conceded a point to Espanyol earlier in the day. Barcelona came
back from a goal down to clinch the match 2-1. It was good fight. The
all-Madrid clash between Real Madrid and Athelico Madrid in the Copa del
Rey final on Friday is one to watch.
Next big match is the European League final between two German teams,
Bayern Munich and Dortmund.

[Goanet] Show me your hypocrisy

In his lead article in today's OHerald, Soter D'Souza points out "trademark
hypocrisy" in Goan society, from denying commnaul discord to themselves
sellinbg land to outisders as well as dwelling space to Goans with foreign
citizenships and NRIs who advice on how to "save Goa".
Since the headline on his piece is Special Status: Some Questions it is
fine that he's raised these questions. But a commentator on Goa's politics
I felt he could have found the answers themselves and put them in their
proper perspective for those "hypocritical" or, should I say,
"hypercritical" Goans who fail to understand well the whole issue of
Special Status.
Open-ended questions leave more room for more questions. He says that the
government has powers to prevent sale of land, options to discourage
migration and to award special status to villages in order to block
constuction of mega-projects. It would have been better to spell out the
provisions in law as wells as the powers invested in the government to go
about doing what is necessary.
What takes the cake is the statement, "No legislation granting special
status can 'save Goa' unless every Goan accords special status to Goa in
their hearts and minds." A fine example of sophism.
As one of the recognized experts on panchayat raj, I would want to ask
Soter if it's possible for a panchayat or a gram sabha to prevent migrants
from preventing them from buying a house in a village? I ask because I read
that the Colva gram sabha passed a resolution saying it will not allow
migrants in the village. Could a migrant then move a court?
In the same village a Goan with foreign citizenship was not allowed to
speak and the sarpanch said he had consulted legal experts who informed
that such native Goans who, as one website called them Goan Origin Non-Goan
(GONG), a term that's an oxymoron, are ineligible to speak at such forums.
The terms "native foreigner" and "foreigner natives" are used in
multicultual studies. Since Soter implies that Goans with foreign
citizenship shouldn't express their views on Goa, does it also account to
xenophonia against one's own kind?
Soter perhaps have read Albertina Almeida's piece, To lynch or Not to
Lynch, in this month's Goa Today. Though the trust of her piece is on
gender issue, she also tackles the "issue of the migrants".
I also assume Soter has read another piece, Can Goa do without migrant
labour?, by G.R. Singbal. Both lawyer/active Ms Almeida and journalist
Singbal sees through xenophobia and I fear this shouldn't come to be one of
new "trademark hypocrisy" of Goans.
Soter makes two side (or rathder snide) remarks. First, "Goa was always
special. That is what probably prompted then Prime Minister Jawaharlal
Nehru to say 'Goa ke log ajeeb hai." To the best of my knowledge what Nehru
had meant was that Goans were "unique" in the sense of their
Indo-Portuguese culture. The word "ajeeb" can be translated to mean many
things, including "strange", and the remark was also used the remark as a
"put-down" of Goan people. It's been repeated ad nauseum in political
writings and books, including the one by Rajan Narayan on the history of
Goa's liberation. Time to give it a rest.
The seccond one: "Goa is one such State where the 'guest soon turns God'
(Athiti Devo Bhavo). Every guest arriving in Goa has the liberty of
becoming the master and dictating to Goans how they should lead their
lives." The translation of the Hindi words is wrong. It means, "The guest
is the Lord in your home" and connotes that in Indian humanism a guest
should be treated with good respect and kindness.

[Goanet] Rally against Mopa

2013-05-16 Thread Eugene Correia
Even as the rallies against Mopa take place, the government has gone ahead
and appointed groups to conduct feasibility studies. The news report says
that the land acquisition for Mopa is complete. Wouldn't it have been
better if the government had waited for the feasibility report to be out?
Maybe the government believes the feasibility report will be in favour of
this second airport. The ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation)
report had called the proposal of a second report as "unviable". Does
anyone, especially journalists and Floriano Lobo, read this report? From
the little I read on it, the ICAO report says that Goa needs just one
airport to make it financial viable.

If the union defence minister says that Dabolim would remain as a civilian
airport and the CM is pursuing Mopa there seems to be a wide gap in their
thinking. It sees that the CM is conducting a feasibility report with the
hope it would negate the ICAO report. The issue of Dabolim vs Mopa or
having both is painted with the Congress and BJP colours.
So, if the government is going ahead with its plans and shows no respect to
the people's wishes from South Goa (though the reaction from people in
North Goa would need to be taken into account), it is now for the MLAs from
the South to take the battle into the government camp.
Alina needs to speak out forcefully and all the South Goa MLAs who are on
the BJP bandwagon must join in to make the CM realise that the project
could be potentially dangerous to BJP's future election prospects. It was
the support of the South MLAs that brought BJP to power and, therefore, the
South MLAs who should be able to make the CM listen to their pleas.
A newspaper report says that Kerala is considering to have two more
international airports to the three it already has
Meanwhile, out own Floriano bab has stolen a march over all others by
renaming the Dabolim airport as Dr. Jack de Sequiera International Airport.
That's how democracy works, the Su-Raj way..

[Goanet] Kidney stones - dailymail.co.uk

Drinking just one can of fizzy drink a day increases the risk of painful kidney

Drinking a can of fizzy drink a day could increase the risk of kidney stones by
almost a quarter, new research shows.

The study found that drinking sugar-sweetened drinks makes the painful stones
more likely to develop.

Other
drinks - such as coffee, tea and orange juice - reduced the risk, the
research by Brigham and Women's Hospital, in Boston, U.S., found.

Dr
Gary Curhan said in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of
Nephrology: ‘Our study found that the relation between fluid intake and
kidney stones may be dependent on the type of beverage consumed.

‘We found that higher consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks was associated with
a higher incidence of kidney stones.’

About
three in 20 British men and one in 20 women develop a kidney stone at
some stage in their life, and they are often advised to drink more
fluids to prevent them reforming.

But Dr Curhan said the new study shows some drinks may be more beneficial than
others.

His team studied data from 194,095 patients over an eight year period.

They
found that those who consumed one or more sugar-sweetened cola servings
per day had a 23 per cent higher chance of developing kidney stones
compared with those participants consuming less than one serving per
week.

This was true for consuming sugar-sweetened non-cola drinks as well, such as
punch.

Three in 20 British men and one in 20 women
develop a kidney stone, and they are often advised to drink more fluids
to prevent them reforming
They also found that some beverages, such as coffee, tea and orange juice, were
associated with a lower risk of stone formation.

Co-author,
Dr Pietro Manuel Ferraro, of the Catholic University of the Sacred
Heart in Rome, said: ‘Our prospective study confirms that some beverages
are associated with a lower risk of kidney stone formation, whereas
others are associated with a higher risk.

‘Although
higher total fluid intake reduces the risk of stone formation, this
information about individual beverages may be useful for general
practitioners seeking to implement strategies to reduce stone formation
in their patients.’

[Goanet] Goa be damned, it's all about freebies

2013-05-16 Thread D'Souza, Avelino
Goa be damned, it's all about freebies
May 13-19, 2013
Lionel Messias

Goa's Movement for Special Status (GMSS) at the Dando grounds, Benaulim where
cheques of government freebies such as the Ladli Laxmi and senior citizens
schemes were distributed, proved to be a disaster because as it happened the
people came there only to collect their cheques. Having collected their
freebies, they left.

This speaks volumes about Goans and issues being fought right now before your
very eyes. It is also an indictment of environment minister Alina Saldhana who
allegedly used the occasion to entice spectators to her faltering GMSS.
Already there is criticism of her entering the anti-Mopa campaign too late, and
we will never know if this is a rebound of that criticism. Goanspirit at least
does not think so, because this is possibly the finest example of Goans being
totally not with it.

This is just one example. I, and admittedly rather foolishly, got dragged into
an inane ball by ball debate on an equally idiotic post on Goa Speaks on
Facebook. By the time you read this I shall have deleted myself as a
participant of that forum. This particular post that triggered mostly angry
replies (barring three respondents who were intelligent) was as a result of an
earlier post by a maverick politician and dentist. What really happened was
just one single person insidiously and not very ingeniously riled everyone
else. This extremely clever person habitually signed off as Jai Ho. And what
anger he created!

My point: are Goans really interested in the issues activists are taking up?
Or, are we just mere spectators? And there is a new breed of activists,
believe me, who are spending their own money, time and energy, which they could
have spent on their own families. I met some of them in Nuvem (read the next
three cover stories beginning this week), and will meet one soon in Orlim. And
would you believe it, many of them are women with school/college going kids and
working husbands. And trust me they are not the kind that rush to the media
(vice versa) like the older generation activists. And there are those warriors
on FB whose only sacrifice is the possibility of getting carpel tunnel
syndrome. It's possible many of them might already unknowingly be afflicted
with it.
