[Goanet-News] DEBATE: The Goan In Goa (Ferrao, Fernandes, Menezes Kanekar in Outlook)

Response: The Goan In Goa
-

Arvind Adiga further
perpetuates the very
narrowness he warns
against in his
portrayal of Francisco
Luis Gomes, published
recently in Outlook

R. Benedito Ferrao, Jason Keith Fernandes, Dale Luis Menezes,
and Amita Kanekar

In his essay The Lusitanian in Hind, novelist Aravind Adiga
strives to situate the 19th century Goan writer and
politician Francisco Luis Gomes (1829-1869) as an Indian
patriot while decrying how most Indians [have] not heard
about Gomes, which, to Adiga, speaks more about the
narrowness of our present conception of Indianness [...].

Yet, through his essay, Adiga further perpetuates
the very narrowness he warns against. In trying to
resuscitate national and nationalistic interest in
Gomes, Adiga explores the possibility of the Goan
polymath's canonicity solely within a prescriptive
Indianness hemmed in by Brahmanical, masculinist,
  Anglo-centric, and ethnocentric preconceptions of
what it means to be Indian. In Adiga's estimation,
Gomes can only be made legible to the larger Indian
imagination if, as a Goan of the Portuguese
colonial era, he can be seen as adequately Indian
based on elitist particularities of caste and other
constricted views of proper national and historical
  belonging.

While Adiga notes how Goa generally registers in popular
Indian thought as a landscape of fun, he also pre-empts any
discussion of the history of the region apart from modern
India, and the impact of such historical regionality upon
Gomes' own oeuvre. Instead, when citing Gomes as having
written of himself that he was born in India, cradle of
poetry, philosophy and history, today its tomb, Adiga rushes
to correlate such sentiment with Gomes having penned those
words in 1861 which, in turn, would make one suppose
[naturally] enough that [the] author was a Bengali Hindu,
writing either in Calcutta or London. However, as Adiga
interjects, [Gomes] was a young Goan Catholic in Lisbon [...].

Clearly, Adiga endeavours to draw attention to the biases
that exist in how perceptions of patriotism connote an
Indianness circumscribed by location, coloniality, and
religion. Nonetheless, rather than striking a contrast for
deeper critical reflection on difference, Adiga's purpose is
to collapse all distinction into nationalist similitude as if
it were natural. And what is believed to be natural here is
that Goa can be a known quantity precisely because there
allegedly is no difference between it and British-colonised
Hindu Bengal, which at once reveals what the historic,
religious, ethnocentric, and colonial default of the nation
is as Adiga predicates it in this ostensibly neutral reasoning.

There is no denying that there were overlaps, and
even collusions, between British and Portuguese
colonialisms; but there were also marked differences.

Although relegating it to a parenthetical aside, even Adiga
must admit that [u]nlike Britain, Portugal gave its colonies
the right of representation. This was an opportunity that
was not available to the sub-continental subjects of the
British Crown, not even to Dadabhai Naoroji who even while he
may have been the first Asian in the British Parliament, was
able to raise issues about British India only while
representing a constituency in London.

In contradistinction, it was from his position as a
representative of Goa in the Portuguese parliament that Gomes
sought to speak about the effects of colonialism on his Goan
homeland and about India. Nowhere is this more apparent than
in his book *Os Brahamanes*, or *The Brahmins*, written in
Portuguese and published in Lisbon in 1866, making it one of
Goa's, if not India's, first novels.

What might Adiga do with other divergences in
histories between the former British and Portuguese
Empires in India? Not only was the latter a longer
  colonisation, witnessing radically different forms
of inclusion and exclusion of the colonised, it
also resulted in the decolonisation of Goa in 1961,
much after British-occupied India. His essay can
only sidestep the fraught history of India's
democracy in which Goans were not allowed
self-determination despite much evidence of efforts
in that vein. This is itself a political
trajectory within which one could arguably place
  Gomes' own polemical writing.

In his haste to employ a one-nationalism-fits-all approach,
Adiga's lauding of Gomes as a forgotten patriot occurs,
furthermore, along the lines of an unquestioning maintenance
of religious and other supremacies as the default of proper
Indianness. One way the article effects this is by
privileging narratives of upper caste loss. For instance,
Adiga posits the

The DLC has also said that all the 25 unauthorised structures, which are

adopted here by the DLC here again does not make sense because it could be
construed that someone could get away in the future with building a

*Mining malaise - 3*

*Here comes the sun*

On the anniversary of his completing one year in office, Chief Minister
Manohar Parrikar announced a financial package for the mining industry
saying, “Don’t paint all those associated with mining with a black brush.
There are at least 20 to 25 percent of mining dependent people who are
desperate to just survive. We feel we should step in and help these
people.” And that’s been his motto, swatting away criticism that he has
been soft on the mining industry that was indicted in a Rs 35,000 crore (1
crore = 1,00,00,000) scam in a report by the M B Shah Commission in
September 2012 that brought mining to a halt.

To that end, Parrikar has moved heaven and earth to keep the industry happy
while he hopes that the Supreme Court gives the green signal to start up
mining, so politically for him and financially for the state (which lost a
revenue of Rs 125 crore per month), it will be a win-win.

*Dabang Parrikar*

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar like most politicians does not like the
media and he uses every opportunity to say so. But unlike most politicians
who are afraid of the judiciary, Parrikar does not shy away, albeit
foolishly, from taking potshots at them as well. It has rankled with him
that the mining industry had to shut shop because of the judiciary and took
away a sizeable chunk of his government’s revenue.

[Goanet] GOA HAS BECOME A CRIME HEAVEN

2013-09-09 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Law and order is key to the prosperity and well being of any society. A
small state like Goa could have maintained its peace and tranquility but
the current ground realities are a matter of great concern. With no
corrective steps being taken we have almost reached a point of no return.

Goa is sadly witnessing a total breakdown in the law and order situation.
The spurt in the number of rapes, molestation and theft cases is a matter
of grave concern. The number of murders and suicides are also escalating by
the day. Today women and the young girls in particular are no longer safe
on the streets. A lot of cases also go unreported for various reasons.
Mostly because of people’s lack of trust and faith in the authorities.
Sadly the fear of law is lacking. The buck stops at the door of the Chief
Minister who has utterly failed as the Home Minister. May be the Home
portfolio needs to be assigned to somebody more competent and capable in
order to get the current messy Goa in order.

While as Leader of the Opposition Manohar Parrikar had consistently blamed
then Home Minister Ravi Naik for the huge number of crimes. Who is to be
blamed now, Mr. Chief Minister. Over the last 18 months the crime rate has
been swelling with the situation having got from bad to worse.

The crime rate bulge is no better even in the Panaji constituency which is
represented by the Chief Minister himself. In the wee hours of yesterday
morning four bikes, one belonging to our friend Vallabh Narvekar were set
on fire in the heart of the city on Atmaram Borkar Road.

There is outrage and despair all over on the deteriorating law and order.
Time to act, Mr. Manohar Parrikar. Or else it may be Morya soon. Over to
you, Mr. Vishnu Wagh.

Re: [Goanet] DEFENCE FORCES SHOULD VACATE PANJIM

2013-09-09 Thread floriano lobo

Thank you Stephen Dias for this press note. Hopefully, it will be published.

GSRP was formed 13 years ago to do all those things that Goa's successive
governments failed to do for Goa and Goans with MGP Party still dreaming
about how to take Goa into Maharashtra. In fact, with the HC of Bombay at
GOA giving a boot to Goan intellectuals and importing enmass Maharashtrians
to work in GOA as also MOPA is what GSRP calls 'THE BACK DOOR MERGER OF GOA
INTO MAHARASHTRA. Goa does not need MOPA and Goa urgently needs it's own HC
at Goa. Slew of things to be done for GOA and GOANs, which things have been
suppressed with the help of CHAMCHAS of Delhi in GOA since 1961 will get on
stream once GSRP takes hold of the governance of Goa and only if GOANs
realize how their own feet are cut under them by the invading and
re-colonizing Lords from Delhi. It is like GOANs saying to their new
MASTERS:

WE WERE HUNGRY AND STARVED FOR 450 YEARS OF PORTUGUESE RULE IN GOA. NOW
THAT YOU HAVE LIBERATED US FROM THAT HUNGER AND STARVATION, WE EXPECT OUR
PLATES TO BE FULL SO THAT WE MAY EAT AND LIVE. BUT YOU HAVING DONE US THE
FAVOUR OF THROWING OUT THE PORTUGUESE... WHOM BY THE WAY... YOU HAVE
ALLOWED TO CREEP INTO GOA LIKE DOGS WITH THEIR TAILS BETWEEN THEIR LEGS.
THROUGH SIGNING THE 1974 CO-OPERATION TREATY..WE WILL DO WITH A QUARTER OF
THE PLATE FULL , ONLY... FOR ONE .. BECAUSE WE ARE USED TO BEING STARVED ...
AND FOR THE OTHER .. THAT YOU HAVE TO FEED ALL THOSE UNWANTED AND STARVING
IN THE REST OF INDIA, WHO YOU HAVE DUMPED AND DUMPING INTO GOA BY THE
HOARDES, AS WELL AS YOUR STARVING ARMED FORCES WHO NEED TO BE FED LIKE PIGS
SO THAT THEY MAY ENJOY THEIR HOLIDAYS IN GOA.

Furtado is a son of GOA. His late brother, Monte Xavier Furtado had big
plans for him, having been the original founder of UGDP which was snatched
from his hand and drubbed into the ground. Furtado needs to keep his elder
brother's dreams alive. GSRP fully supports him in his endeavour to rid
Panjim of the army boots without exception.

Subject: [Goanet] DEFENCE FORCES SHOULD VACATE PANJIM

ARMY BARRACKS TO BE SHUNTED OUT FROM PANJIM.

It is heartening to note that Mayor Surendra Furtado is working hard
towards freeing Panjim from the clutches of the Defence forces which
have occupied prime civilian properties all around Panjim, thus
harassing and inconveniencing the common man of Panjim through their
intrusive behavior in the heart of the city.

It is noteworthy that none of those in the past either Mayors from
Municipal Corporation as well as from the Assembly did anything to
relieve the acute congestion in the market area of Panjim. Even
Manohar Parrikar did precious little to understand the traffic woes of
those living and visiting Panjim even though he represented the
capital city for nearly 20 years. Being a resident of Panjim since
his childhood, Furtado knows and realizes well the problems caused by
the army barracks in central Panjim. Why should army have canteens,
shops, garages, hospitals, army mess and sales counters in central
Panjim? As such service personnel never pay commercial taxes and are
afforded subsidized groceries and provisions. The people of Goa have
given enough for the defense causes huge tracks of land around Tiswadi
at Bambolim, Merces, Verem, Altinho etc We have surrended the
prostine Angedive islands too! That was really a great mistake
committed by our Goa Government.

The residents of Panjim have suffered for far too long the unnecessary
presence of service men in the prime commercial area of the capital
city.

Mr Furtado has successfully initiated the just cause of requesting the
Army to vacate these buildings and properties which in fact belong to
the Municipal Corporation. While it was a good gesture to allow army
to be in Panjim for 50 years shown by local body, it is prudent that
the area was once belonging to Camara Municipal de Goa, be now handed
over to the residents of Panjim.

We require spaces for Panjim vehicles to raise a New Corporation
building, for waste management and other civic services. Not only
defence personnel, even the Captain of Ports office in Central Panjim
needs to be shifted to Marmagoa or Vasco and the vacated premises be
used by the C.C.P. I am fully aware that the Captain of Ports failed
to maintain the cleanliness of the river Mandovi, which is fully
congested with casinos, supply boats and other regular vessels.
Frequently accidents do occur due to bad navigation with no
supervision from the officials of Captain of Ports, which gives an
impression that there is no accountability and no proper register is
maintained of their working system.

Today, Panjim is degrading fast. The casinos are cooking meals in the
heart of the city for their guests visiting their casinos. Earlier it
was reported that Almeida Guest House situated just opposite the
Panjim Navigation jetty, their casino clients were seen

Ms Fernandes, it is obvious you have an axe to grind. Your anti Catholic views
are extremely clear but your beliefs and the group you belong to are not. So
please clear this anomaly. Regarding the Catholic Church, be advised we are the
Catholic Church and the hierarchy of the church functions as a guide and
advisory body to the members of the Church. The church does not command or
create laws as that would infringe upon our right to free will which is God
given. The church does not tie you to the pews nor hold a gun to your head. We
do not consider it proper to interfere in people's lives nor stop young boys
and seriously accept the random statements young boys make as truth. I know
many who would have enjoyed themselves at your expense. Roland being one.
Mother Mary? Well your lack of knowledge is acceptable, but your brainwashed
ideas being presented a legitimate argument is not. You are entitled to your
view and beliefs, you have every right to speak to the world of your beliefs
but you must inform your listeners they are your views and those of the group
you are a part off or represent. Trying to pass yourself off as a disillusioned
Catholic is wrong.
Your own statement that Mother Mary was chosen by God to be the Mother of Jesus
should stop you in your tracks. If God chooses one young girl from the
trillions of creation. It should make you sit up and take notice. There is much
about Our Lady you should know and learn. If anyone spoke ill of my Mother I
would not be pleased. Bear this thought in mind.
Who are you to sit on judgement? Has God given you the right? If not, then
refrain from criticising the behaviour and actions of others. It is between
them and their God. God created them, He knows their innermost thoughts and
secrets, He loves them, and will care for them. Our duty is to help and assist,
be available to those in need and Love one another. If you would like to take

Re: [Goanet] Migration Watch UK: I am Puzzled. Exactly who do I applaud? 3

2013-09-09 Thread J. Colaco jc
Dears

Having read the 4 articles related to this topic, I thought I'd post a few
comments:

[1] Re: The Green, Migration Watch Article (appendix 1):

(Further to my previous comment that Britain STILL has the choice of
leaving the EU)

a: One of the thrusts of Mr. Green's article is that spouses of British
nationals are at a disadvantage when compared spouses of other EU
nationals. I agree with him. This is a topic he needs to take up with the
courts in UK and the ECHR

b: The Green paper omits to mention the fact the a large number of British
people have migrated south to France, Spain and Portugal (and US, Canada,
Oz).

[2] Re: The Benedito Ferrao Jason Keith Fernandes paper (Appendix 2)

c: I am not sure WHY the paper diluted its thrust by going all over Africa
and other British colonies and colonialism.

d: Mr. Green's paper was specifically referring to the large influx of
Europeans into Britain.

e: This sudden influx has dramatically changed Britain, NOT all of it
beneficially.

f: Britain's infrastructure was not prepared for the significant fraud and
squatting by these Europeans (Appendix 3 and 4)

g: Is it really xenophobic to be upset by the filthification and rip off of
one's homeland? (Never mind the contra argument. Two wrongs do not make a
right)

h: Ferrao and Fernandes are misrepresenting the facts when they say that
Goans and other Portuguese Indians LOST their Portuguese citizenship when
Goa was annexed by India. NOT true.

i: I am NOT very sure why COLOUR came into this article's headline. Do we
know the genetic make up of the Portuguese ...or Goans, for that matter?

[3] Re the post by Hartman D'Souza who attended the same school and college
in Poona as I did (Appendix 5)

j: I disagree with the author that Goans are fleeing anywhere. Traveling
for opportunities is not fleeing.. From ancient times, individuals
traveled, inter alia, in search of food and opportunity. That, never mind
the revisionists, is how the Aryans (and before them, the paleo
Mediterranean Dravidians) came to the subcontinent.

k: I am not sure about his father 'changing his nationality upon landing in
British East Africa'. WHAT did he change it to, IN WHICH YEAR and under
WHAT provisions of WHICH Constitution?

l: I wonder if the following were and/or illegal acts: exploding
firecrackers in the garden of the Portuguese Consul in Mombasa (Trespass
with out without criminal damage) and forging his father's signature
(fraud).

[4] Re the post by Anthony Fernandes (Appendix 6)

m: I believe that his statement (I paraphrase) that the Indian passport
was FORCED upon (his) parents is a misrepresentation.

n: I wish to suggest that when those British East African territories
became independent, the non-locals were given options: Obtain
Kenyan/Tanzanian/Ugandan citizenship (if you wish to stay on) or stay
British/other and proceed. From what I understand, many stayed, many
traveled and resettled in the UK with their UK nationality and many applied
for Indian nationality and went to Goa.

POST SCRIPT:

I enjoyed reading ALL the the postings. They demonstrated passion which is
always good to read.

I hope to read more from these authors.

100,000 dependants of EU nationals resident in Britain entered the UK in
the last five years with no conditions attached

but with full and immediate access to benefits.

The government’s reform of the Immigration Rules require British citizens
to be earning £18,600 before they can bring in a spouse from outside the EU
so as to avoid any cost to the taxpayer. However, under EU law, they are
obliged to provide favourable treatment to EU citizens including those who
may never have been resident here prior to moving with their non-EUfamily.

Commenting, Sir Andrew Green, Chairman of Migration Watch UK, said “This is
a loophole that must be closed and soon. It is absurd that EU citizens
should be in a more favourable position than our own citizens.
Furthermore, 20,000 per year is a very large number to admit
unconditionally, especially compared to the government’s target of tens of
thousands for annual net migration.

Notes to Editors:

1 More precisely, this applies to EEA nationals.

2 Example: French or Polish citizens living in the UK can marry someone
from anywhere in the world and can bring him or her

to the UK even if they do not have a job and cannot support their spouse
whereas a British citizen must now be earning

£18,600 a year.

3 Examples of Abuse – An Indian national from Goa can obtain Portuguese
citizenship if their parents were Portuguese citizens prior to 1961. They
can then move straight to the UK with their family using an EEA family
permit. On arrival they can avail themselves, immediately, of all the
benefits available to UK citizens. There is anecdotal evidence that this
has been happening quite extensively. Many settle in Swindon, where around

[Goanet] MOVEMENT FOR SPECIAL STATUS FOR GOA----WAS IT ANOTHER CON THAT CAME UNSTUCK?

2013-09-09 Thread Gerald Fernandes

MOVEMENT FOR SPECIAL
STATUS FOR GOAWAS IT ANOTHER CON THAT CAME UNSTUCK?

The short shrift given
to the Bill seeking “Special Status” for the State of Goa under Article 371 of
the Constitution by the collective wisdom of the Parliament of the Republic of
India, that is Bharat which is a Union of States, underlines the half-baked,
spirit-fuelled, knee-jerk idea proposed by another group of individual busy-bees
going under the grandiose name of MSSG (Movement for Special Status for Goa)
That the lone Rajya  Sabha Member
of Parliament from Goa had the good sense to withdraw the Bill was a saving
grace rather than the Bill having to suffer the ignominy of a crushing defeat
were it to be put to vote. The Bill obviously was ill-conceived given the fact
that the State of Goa under Part XXI, TEMPORARY, TRANSITIONAL AND SPECIAL
PROVISIONS under Article 371-I of the Constitution of India, Goa already has
special
provision granted in that “Notwithstanding anything in this Constitution, the
Legislative Assembly of the State of Goa shall consist of not less than thirty
members” That the Bill was piloted by none other than a Member of Parliament
who continues to be Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law and
Judiciary, reflects either adversely on the gullibility of the MP from Goa, or
his Kautilyan intent to glad hand citizens of India, resident in the State of
Goa as also the Legislature of Goa! It is all the more galling that the
Standing Committee of Parliament on Law and Judiciary composed of some of the
eminent bright men and women in the legal sphere could not dissuade or prevail
upon its Chairman to abandon his mission of tilting at windmills!
MSSG must now acclimatize to its self-inflicted, perhaps fatal injury and
take into consideration the saner views expressed by two other former eminent
Parliamentarians from the legal fraternity who have served with distinction in
the national  public life – one from South
Goa who was the Minister of State for External Affairs, and the other from
North Goa who was the Minister of State for Law, Judiciary and Company Affairs.
On our part we would strongly suggest that the State of Goa utilize the
legislative power conferred upon the State of Goa under:
List II, State List under Article 246 of the Constitution gives exclusive
power under Entry 18 to the State to make laws relating to “land, that is to
say, right in or over land, land tenures including the relation of landlord and
tenant, and collection of rents; transfer and alienation of agricultural land;
land improvement; and agricultural loans; colonization”
to without much further ado or  without waiting for ‘Godot’ or without
unreasonably
waiting for “Manna” to rain down from Parliament on the State of Goa , pass
laws to exercise its Constitutional prerogative to the State of Goa and to all
citizens of India currently residing in the State of Goa to protect its
interests. Other prerogatives under List II could be applied in Stages to
achieve the welfare and prosperity of the people of Goa.
We submit it is imperative and necessary as a measure of
inter-generational equity and precaution to quickly embark on this legislative
course of action.
It is a decision that requires really
brave men and women considering the fact that all political parties,
notwithstanding the glib postures and platitudes mouthed by them, utterly
depend and rely upon “demographic destabilization” of the Electorate in some
form or other to get elected to political power. KOI HAI TAYYAR? HAI KISI MEIN
HIMMAT AUR POLITICAL DUM? ( Sancho-Panzas and Mavericks excused. They must
continue tilting at windmills)

Struck me as a fine example of contemporary (rural) Goan English usage!

But, more seriously

Personally, I don't think it fair to poke fun at politicians (or anyone) on
the basis of their fluency (or otherwise) in a certain language. In our
system, which requires everyone to express themselves in English or Hindi,
a system which is not fair to all concerned. It could give someone like
Shiv or me an upper hand, agreed. And then, there are enough people in
cyberspace to poke fun at certain politicians; often based on the
already-perceived or previous biases against them!

I remember times when a PV Narasimha Rao was praised as the politician who
spoke 13 or 14 languages, etc. Yet we all know his real record in ruling
the country. Why was he treated with kid gloves? An S. Bangarappa, on the
other hand, was dismissed as anything but a chief minister, with a
photograph showing him playing a huge drum at some cultural fest! (This is
not to claim that Bangarappa was a good politician.)

It is very easy to use the media, including the new media, to discredit or
lionise certain politicians, and do contrarily to others.

At the end of the day, it would be more than fine to ask (i) what is
Churchil's stand on the issue of alleged misbehaviour by his football
players (ii) what is his overall role as a politician in Goa during a
crucial period of social change. But to take pot-shots at him primarily on
the basis of his linguistic (in)ability or form of expression, is, in my
view, both unfair and reflecting of our own biases. FN

PS: From the clip one learns that Churchill is alleging that there was a
footballing conspiracy to ground his team. Is this true? True or false,
isn't this news?

An open letter to His Holiness, Pope Francis
WISHING YOUR HOLINESS WELCOME TO GOA INDIA

Your Holiness,

I am Alfred de Tavares, an Indian journalist (from Goa) based since four

I have covered news from all Scandinavia for the Indo-Asian News Service, IANS,
the

We, in Goa are extremely overjoyed with the news that Your Holiness may visit

the next exposition of His Holy Relics, in December, 2013.

May the good Lord, through the miraculous intercession of Saint Francis Xavier,
grant
our wishes.

Your Holiness, please allow me to make a great and humble wish.

Since Your Holiness has accended the throne of Saint Peter, Your reign has been
uniquely
marked by the symbols of humanity, poverty, humility and simplicity.

Hence, You Holiness, with all due respect, humility and love, I take the

It is the world's cheapest made personal car and gives the most distance per

If Your Holiness accedes to this proposal I am sure that the prestigious Indian

Re: [Goanet] An Introduction to Bridge at Associação Académica de Moira

2013-09-09 Thread augusto pinto
I had a chat with Mr Oswald Cordeiro today afternoon and he quite happily
agreed to support the bridge initiative in the club.

He reminded me about a promise I made about gifting 5 tables to the club
and I replied that the moment he came up with a quotation I would see that
the promise was made good. He also asked me to organize a chess tournament
in the club to which I agreed.

In the meanwhile, I wrote to him an sms: Hi Ossie - as Sarpanch of Moira
and President of A A de Moira I want you to inaugurate and also participate
in the Bridge demo @ 6.30 pm on 14 Sept at Moira Club.

With Sarpanch Ossie behind us this is going to be a grand success. In the
meanwhile let me inform you that I have already received three entries for
the Bridge Demo - two from Saligao and one from Betalbatim (!)

Of course the regular card players at the club like Mark Cordeiro, Felipe
D'Sa, Francis Nazareth, Nicholas Andrade, John Menezes, Tiago D'Sa, Reis
Magos De Souza, Vincent Coelho, have all pledged to be present. But carrom
players like Mark, Minguel, Francine et al are also interested to join.

But Bridge is not a game only for men but women are known to be keen
aficionados so I'm looking forward to a good many females to take part. In
fact given that most of us have not played the game I think we should look
at it as a whist drive where we could all socialize and we could all come
and become part of a new social circle.

So I expect a big turnout next Saturday.

[Goanet] IN GOA-LATE SEPT: Everyone Is An Artist (ATC Exchange 2.0)

2013-09-09 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या * فريدريك نورونيا
Everyone Is An Artist (ATC Exchange 2.0)

An artist trading card (ATC) is a miniature work of art created with the
sole intention of sharing and exchanging it with one and other. There are
only two rules to creating an ATC and participating in a swap: An ATC
should measure 2.5 x 3.5 inches ATCs should not be bought or sold - only
exchanged with each other ( you can use all your charm to persuade someone
to exchange with you!). Open to any age group and from any background
because everyone is an artist. Make one to get one! Better still - make
many to get many!
The first ATC session was held on 24th August and was supported by the
GCCI. The next ATC session is in late September - keep watching this space
for updates.

[Goanet] DEBATE: The Goan In Goa (Ferrao, Fernandes, Menezes Kanekar in Outlook)

2013-09-09 Thread Goanet Reader

I have no idea how far Churchill has studied. I know he came from a
financiallly backward family. Despite his lack of fluency in English,
Churchill manages to get by. There are many politicians, particularly in UP
and Bihar, who don't speak a word of English. Like many politicians
Churchill is fluent in his own mother tongue.
Well, his English pronunciations seem funny, but there are thousands of
Goans who speak as badly as him if not worse. Though there are misplaced
words in his address, his message is clear. He's not totally
incomprehensible.

Lovely one, Alfred! I particularly liked the part in which you generously
volunteered -- on behalf of Ratan Tata, no less -- to drive to the
occasion. The patriotic plug for the Nano (as also for khadi) is to be much
appreciated. For this alone, someone reading this should take the
initaitive of nominating you for an NRI award of some Ratna variety.

As for the Papal reply (unfortunately it won't show up on Goanet as
attachments are not distributed here), what I liked best was the
neither-yes-nor-no but only prayers! FN
