[Goanet-News] The history of early Goan emigration needs to be written (Eduardo Faleiro)
By Eduardo Faleiro lokseva...@gmail.com Sometime ago, I visited several villages and towns in the neighbouring districts of Maharashtra and Karnataka to meet people of Goan origin settled there. During the 16th and 17th centuries thousands of Goans, both Hindus and Christians, left Goa to escape religious and cultural persecution. In Goa, during that period, all possible obstacles were imposed on the practice of the local religions. Moreover, converts to Christianity could not easily change their deep rooted Indian way of life. The missionaries and the colonial administration would not tolerate this. For them Christianity meant Europeanisation and Christian religion, a part of the Western culture. The new Christians had to detach themselves from their cultural, social and natural environment. If they followed their own culture in any manner whatsoever they were arrested and tried by the Inquisition. This situation led both Hindus and a large number of converts to Catholicism to migrate in search of peace and a normal life. Epidemics as well as continuous wars waged by the Sultan of Bijapur, the Marathas and the Portuguese hastened the Goan exodus. Those early Goan migrants were mostly farmers. Today, many of their descendants are teachers, lawyers, doctors, engineers, Government officials, elected Government representatives and many others have joined the Defence forces. Descendants of the people who migrated to the neighbouring areas of Maharashtra are known there as Bardezkars, since their ancestors migrated mostly from Bardez. Their surname in school registers and revenue records appears as 'Bardezkar'. The progeny of those settled in Karnataka are called konkanes because they speak Konkani as well as Kannada. Hindus, Muslims and Christians in those areas participate in each other's religious festivals, weddings and other gatherings and there is hardly any difference in their social life and food habits. The then Union Minister of Youth Affairs, Jitendra Singh, agreed to our request for an Youth Exchange Programme so that the youth of Goan origin from the neighbouring areas might visit Goa and get acquainted with their roots and different facets of life here. The programme is aimed at youth in the age group of 18 to 30 years, future leaders, who have distinguished themselves in some field of activity. It is intended for the young generation to promote understanding and goodwill between the three States involved -- Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Eleven youths of Goan origin settled in Azra, Kholapur district, visited Goa last year, and participated in a one week orientation programme to create awareness of different facets of life in Goa. They interacted with Goan youth, our academic and cultural institutions as well as with our elected representatives at different levels of Government. They visited the Goa University, met with the faculty and students and participated in several cultural and social events. Subsequently, a group of seven Goan youths visited Azra for a similar one week schedule and stayed with local families. The Nehru Yuvak Kendra conducted this programme. It is expected to be an annual feature. The history of the early Goan emigration needs to be written. The Xavier Centre of Historical Research has done some research on this subject. The University Grants Commission has funded a Chair on Diaspora Studies at the Goa University and it will also deal with this topic. Emigration of Goans continues to this day. The Department of NRI Affairs, Government of Goa, in collaboration with the National Centre for Development Studies released in 2008 a comprehensive Goa Migration Study. The Study found Goan diaspora settled in 43 countries with 56 percent in the Middle East, 13 percent in Europe, 11 percent in South and South East Asia and 10 percent in North America. About 7 percent of our emigrants work on board the ships. Among the emigrants, females are better educated than males. Some 36 percent of the female emigrants are graduates compared to 26 percent male emigrants. Remittances from our emigrants are estimated at Rs.700 crore and have a significant impact on our economy. Meanwhile, a growing apprehension is being voiced at the influx of migrants from elsewhere into Goa. Recently, one of our Ministers expressed concern that it may destroy Goa's demography and identity. To reduce such an influx there ought to be adequate employment opportunities for Goans in Goa. Our State has an increasingly educated work force and limited industrial growth. In the Sixties, tourism was identified as a key sector for Goa's development. However, Goa being a small State its carrying capacity in terms of its size, facilities available and ecological fragility needs to be

When the parents/guardians are ignorant, that responsibility extends to the village - and then to society at large. I totally agree with you that every child should be immunized and have the proof before s/he applies to any school. Most parents would like reasonable assurances that the school authorities are following the rules for the prevention of communicable diseases. The crux of the matter in the case above, however, is fear. Fear fueled by ignorance. You can remove fear, as Cecil pointed out, by having a PTA. You cannot totally remove the transmission of communicable diseases from any school. When someone gets a 'gut feeling' and points a finger at HIV+ individuals, they are spreading fear, they are discriminating. Plain and simple. I know people who have been HIV+ for decades. They do not spread any infectious diseases. I also know people who have never had HIV and are dead from diseases that are totally preventable. Mervyn

[Goanet] Recipes for Fish and Prawn Curries
Could readers please send me some tasty but simple recipes for a Goan fish curry and prawn curry. I have researched the net and there are many, but I know I will get better ones from Goanet readers. The problem in Toronto is this: To buy a fish or prawn curry I have to drive 100 kms (to and fro) to Goan Mississauga. After that trouble what I'll get is a Mangalorean one. All Goan restaurants have failed, the Mangaloreans have succeeded and Goan home based caterers need one week's notice for special orders. There are many Sri Lankan fish and prawn curries in my neck of the woods, they are tasty in their own way, but hot as hell and not comparable to the Goan. I cannot cook but can work to simple recipes which I follow assiduously having learnt that if you want the taste, you must copy the paste. The Lady of the House can make delicious curries but no one in the house eats Goan curries (specially seafood) so she just doesn't make them for me alone and refuses to let me in on the recipes. Ingredients are no problem, but please state quantities and include a simple process. Thanks to the Goana and Saldanha brands prepared in Goa, one can get packets and bottles of of Goan vinegar, mangosteen (kokum), rechado, kashmiri chillies and what-have-you. Many thanks to those who reply. Roland. Sent from Samsung Mobile
[Goanet] Fwd: Memorandum submitted by Goa IT Professionals (GITP) to Goa Government and Goan Political Leadership to promote Goan IT-ITeS Industry
Dear Editors, Reporters and the Goan media community: *(160 Goan media email IDs marked in Bcc)* Warm greetings from GITP! Goa IT Professionals (GITP) is a registered association of IT professionals from the Indian and global Information Technology (IT) and IT enabled Services (ITeS) industry with specific focus on promoting the cause of IT-ITeS industry in Goa. With our vision of “Goa – The self-sustaining and eco-friendly IT-ITeS Innovation capital of India by 2024!”, we are ready to mobilize our 7500+ members to intellectually and physically contribute towards achieving the same. Based on the vast experience of our members in the global, Indian and the nascent Goan IT-ITeS industry we have put together a long list of practical ideas for accelerating the Goan IT-ITeS industry to new heights and presented these in a memorandum to the Goa Government and Goan Political Leadership via email on July 17, 2014. We have also categorically pinpointed the areas from planning to implementation in which GITP is ready to actively contribute. IT-ITeS industry is one of the most Green, Clean and Intellectual industries in the world ideally suited for the highly creative, passionate, literate and, environmentally and identity conscious Goans. And also for Goa given its semi-urban infrastructure across the state with reasonably stable electric power supply and high-speed broadband network. That covers all key essentials for the IT-ITeS industry, which will also generate significant local employment for a wide range of skill sets from highly technical to semi-technical and service oriented tasks. However the traditional Indian IT-ITeS model based on large IT Parks for economies of scale – which has led to widespread urban unsustainable saturation in some places – needs significant adaption leveraging latest Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) advancements for long term relevance and success in a unique place like Goa. All this put together will help reverse the prevalent brain drain of Goan educated workforce and, with the right regulations in place, to arrest the influx of undesired workforce into Goa. The recommendations in our memorandum can help Goa effectively tackle such chronic issues and preserve the much treasured Goan identity, heritage and environment. As a progressive group of passionate Goan professionals with a strong desire to see our beloved Goa prosper in the right direction we at GITP continue to work on our Goa IT-ITeS mission while awaiting Goa Government’s direction on the immediate next steps that we could take together. We seek whole-hearted support in our earnest endeavor from the Goan media which has always upheld issues of significance to Goa and Goans. Kindly give this matter as much publicity as possible in your esteemed daily to create maximum impact and attention from the Goa Government and Goan political leadership in view of the Assembly session starting next week. We look forward to and are grateful for your co-operation and support. *Highlights on how GITP proposes to collaborate with Goa Government for IT-ITeS Industry promotion:* •GITP will help prepare the Goa IT-ITeS Policy with contributions from global experts in the field •Partner with Goa government in modelling and implementing a Virtual SEZ network of inter-connected IT-ITeS MicroSEZs spread across Goan villages for ultra-light carbon footprint •Provide inputs to Goa Government on school and college curriculum revisions for greater focus on latest technological trends, innovation and entrepreneurship resulting in high-grade industry-ready workforce output from the Goan educational system •Provide an online advisory and support forum to the small and medium Goan IT-ITeS companies •Mentor and actively promote local Goan IT-ITeS startups and entrepreneurs within our GITP network to enhance their visibility and help expand their businesses •Partner with Goa government on e-Governance solutions for Goa •Help Goa government collate information about Goans in the Indian and global IT-ITeS industry with the objective of facilitating reverse brain drain into Goa •Physically contribute through active on-the-ground participation in Goa government’s efforts to spread IT-ITeS awareness in all strata’s of Goan society to minimize ill-informed opposition to the proposed large-scale IT-ITeS in Goa. *GITP Contacts:* *On Facebook:* https://www.facebook.com/groups/Goaitp/ *Gurudev Naik: *gurudev.n...@gmail.com, +919167260039 *Vincent Toscano:* vincent.toscan...@gmail.com, +919765410020 -- Forwarded message -- From: goa itp goa...@gmail.com Date: Thu, Jul 17, 2014 at 11:48 PM Subject: GITP Memorandum to Goa Govt. [Goanet] Recipes for Fish and Prawn Curries
Dear Roland the staple qua non of all these books (Can I get a place in the Oxford English Dick for staple qua non :) I own at least a dozen such books. Just ask someone coming to Goa to carry a dozen or so back with them for you. If you diligently follow these recipes which give quantities and process and pictures or / and experiment a little with the basic recipe, after a while you will surely hit at your own gourmet Goan fish / prawn curry. Call it Goan Fish / Prawn Curry a la Roland to get that extra special taste and serve it with lots of tomato ketchup. Hope you get it right. Best, Augusto

[Goanet] Recipes for Fish and Prawn Curries (Response to Roland Francis from Rose Fernandes)
Dear Roland, I normally make my prawn curry with okra (ladies fingers). You can also make it with brinjal (aubergine). Okra, about one packet. Wash and cut your okra into three quarter inch pieces and put in a pan, mix with very little salt and keep aside to cook later. (if using aubergine, depending on size, half will suffice). If using fresh prawns, clean and cut and mix with very little salt and put aside. If using frozen prawns put a little luke warm water over them to defrost slightly and omit the salt. Next fry up (with a little olive oil) very finely chopped onions (1 medium sized onion), next put in three cloves of garlic and about an inch of ginger (all finely chopped). Next ingredient will be very finely chopped up tomato (one medium sized one). You can then put in a little tomato puree if you wish. Next I put in fresh shredded coconut (the best), or creamed coconut or dessicated coconut. The amount should be what you like but I normally put in about a table spoon. In Goa they put in a lot more but I tend to watch our coconut intake in our house. Next you put in, if you have Goana spices, either use the one for prawn caldeen or prawn curry about two teaspoons. You also need to add a quarter teaspoon of black pepper and half level teaspoon of turmeric . Then add tamarind, either soak tamarind in hot water, strain the water and add or put in tamarind paste a level teaspoon and dried mango slices. I usually add a slash of Goan vinegar or malt vinegar, about one tablespoon. You can also add a green chilli if you wish if you require the curry to be hot. Cook your mixture for about ten or fifteen minutes with water about three quarters cup on low heat. Check the water levels, you do not want your curry with too much liquid. Then add okra (and more water if needed) and cook for about ten to fifteen minutes, with the lid of the pan on. Finally add in the prawns and cook for about ten minutes. If you really want it the Goan way, apart from the okra, mango slices and green chillis, sling all the ingredients into a liquidiser and liquidise it then cook the curry for ten minutes adding the mango slices, green chillis. Add the okra and lastly the prawns as given above. Remember prawns do not take very long to cook so should be added last. I normally add a bit of fresh coriander at the end but this is optional. Make sure you use your salt sparingly or wash it off the prawns and okra, as you will be using tamarind and vinegar. You can always add salt to a dish later if needed. I find this curry normally tastes better the following day. Hope I have not left any ingredients out (goanet readers please advise) and you are able to cook and enjoy the dish. The secret is to get the curry base to the right taste and texture (that suits your taste I mean) and then put in your main ingredients (okra or aubergine, later on prawns) and cook on low heat, keeping an eye on the liquid. Best regards. Rose Fernandes Thornton Heath, Surrey, United Kingdom 18 July 2014

After that trouble what I'll get is a Mangalorean one. All Goan restaurants have failed, the Mangaloreans have succeeded and Goan home based caterers need one week's notice for special orders. -snip- I cannot cook but can work to simple recipes which I follow assiduously having learnt that if you want the taste, you must copy the paste. The Lady of the House can make delicious curries but no one in the house eats Goan curries (specially seafood) so she just doesn't make them for me alone and refuses to let me in on the recipes. --- Roland, 1) I do not think there is a problem in Toronto as are there are several caterers who will deliver Goan pork and seafood dishes to your doorstep on the weekends. Others deliver Goan sausages and pickles to your doorstep any day of the week. 2) It is kind of sad that you cannot get the boss to share your favourite recipes. Out of the kindness of my heart, here is a prawn curry recipe from the old country. Mervyn -- Mervyn's Happy Call Prawn Recipe Ingredients •12 ml recoiling coconut tree oil •11 finely chopped leeks •10 jackginger flakes •6 Selander leaves, bowl shaped •6 pinches of firm ground turmeric •6 rounded, Canadian tiger prawns Requirements: 2 jocose eyes, 4 crazy arms, 1 silver-lined recessing bowl, 1 deep pan. Heat. Method: Select the prawns as you select mackerel, using only those brought to the door with a silvery appearance. Avoid those with a golden tint. Look straight into the eye of the tiger pawn, behead it with a quick twist also removing the guts in that one motion. Salt the openings and nonchalantly set aside. Stir the ingredients till the concoction sputters. Discretely add confectionery sugar for thickening. Drop the tiger prawns into the pan, stirring gently, till tender. If the prawn lies flat on the pan, it becomes burnt and useless. Flip over steadily, using cheerfulness. Wait till desired colour and texture. Bon appetite and call me over if it agrees with your palate.

Re: [Goanet] What does your school PTA say about admitting kids with HIV?

Doc, The responsibility for orphans lies on my shoulders. And yours. It would be a cruel place where people care less for the weakest members of society. jc (3) : My experience with HIV kids is surely not as vast as yours. [C] Were THESE HIV+ ORPHANS managed according to the same regimen THOSE individuals were/are? Doc, the short answer is that HIV+ people are monitored much more closely than those without HIV. The reason, I am told, is that HIV+ people are much more susceptible to diseases. TB being the leading cause of death for them. Again, since HIV+ kids are monitored much more closely, I feel those with TB will be identified much more faster than kids who are not HIV+. In other words, there is a greater danger of finding a TB Mary in the non-HIV population than in the HIV+ population. Mervyn
