[Goanet] Sonia Gomes: Os Cus De Judas by António Lobo Antunes

http://portlingoa.blogspot.in/
Thursday, October 30, 2014 Os Cus De Judas by António Lobo Antunes

By Sonia Gomes
rgso...@gmail.com

Children stretch out their matchstick thin arms, a rusty tin
can in the palms of their hands, through the barbed wire
surrounding the Camp, just for a morsel, a morsel of just
about anything to eat.

People sit on their haunches around the camp, starving,
waiting just waiting for a scrap of food. Women turn
prostitutes for a morsel to feed their children. Their eyes
reflect patience, endless patience. There is nothing,
absolutely nothing. No medicines. No food for anyone.

This is what Antonio Lobo Antunes sees every day in
Angola, he fights a war he just does not want to
fight, he has left his pregnant wife back home in
Portugal for a war which has absolutely no meaning
for him or for that matter for anyone else.

Antonio Lobo Antunes is brutal. And why not? The colonial war
for Independence turned civil war was ferocious. Seen
through the tired eyes of the doctor António Lobo Antunes
this bloody Colonial War is savage. What is there about this
vicious War? Every sordid detail is placed before you. Take
the terrible, terrible loneliness sapping you of your will to
live, add to it the lack of camaraderie between the soldiers,
compounded by the utter hopelessness of the War. They just
want to go home. What are they fighting for? What is all
this bloody War about?

They all wonder, there seems to be absolutely no escape,
shall we commit suicide, or shall we wait for a nice coffin.
There are no answers.

Who are the Victorious? Doesn't seem to be any, in fact all
of them are losers. Everyone a victim. The people of Angola
are in a vacuum, what the hell is going on? There the
Colonisers, the Portuguese, and then some other Outside
Forces urging them to get rid of the regime, purify your
country evict the Colonisers. Where are they heading?

Such a colossal waste this war is, such terrible
consequences, one moment the people of Angola are fighting a
war of Independence, throwing the Colonisers out of their
country and the next thing they know the war for Independence
has turned into a Civil war.

How could it have happened?

That is the way Colonisers operate. They are the Masters.
They take what they want, they use, they abuse, and when they
can use no more they leave. It really is very simple.

Good news for Portugal overnight it had turned into a
Democracy. They were free without shedding a drop of blood.
Why take care of countries which now are a burden? What can
they get from a war torn Nation? Abandon the Africans to
their own fate. The Colonisers owe these illiterates
nothing. Take care of yourselves; you are now Independent,
you are now Free, Isn’t that what you wanted anyway?

Black brother fought Black brother, aided by powerful
'Democratic countries'. Black brothers killed Black
brothers. Oh yes, terrible, terrible consequences. But who
for God’s sake cares for a bunch of illiterate, black people?
The white, democratic people know these Blacks do not amount
to much anyway.

Eventually when Lobo Antunes does return to Portugal, life is
never the same for him, nobody in Portugal respects these
soldiers who were embroiled in a meaningless war.

Slowly and steadily he loses everything. His marriage just
meanders and falls apart. His beloved daughters, he sees
them once a week. He begins drinking; you see he hopes that
'it will never be morning again'. He has encounters with
strange women in bars.

He is just a sad beaten man. Once upon a time, a very long
time ago he had been a Doctor but now he is a sad, beaten and
humiliated man. A husk of a man, he is a person who has no
substance, no personality, not even character, his dreams and
hopes long gone, an empty shell of a human that once was. Oh
yes, war does that to you.

Brutal though the book is, there are those moments of utter
sadness permeated by a luminosity, which lifts the book out
of being just a book of utter brutality and makes it a
beautiful story.

António Lobo Antunes was born in Lisbon, the eldest
of six sons of João Alfredo de Figueiredo Lobo
Antunes. At the age of seven he decided to be a
writer, but when he was 16, his father sent him to
the medical school at the University of Lisbon. He
graduated as a medical doctor specializing in
psychiatry. All through this time he never stopped
  writing.

By the end of his education, Lobo Antunes had to serve in the
Portuguese Army and participate in the Portuguese Colonial
War, which lasted from 1961 to 1974.

Lobo Antunes returned from Africa in 1973. The Angolan war
for independence was the subject of many of his novels. In
1979, Lobo Antunes published his first novel, Memória de
Elefante – The Memory of an Elephant, whi

[Goanet] Performance of F.C Goa

2014-10-30 Thread Nelson Lopes
Performance of FC Goa in ISL

The Goans as a whole are totally disappointed with the performance of Goan
contingent in ISL. Goans always hold their head high in the football
field and football map in India .Never in the history of Goan football or
any tournament , the team Goa has been filtered as a residue at the bottom
of the table

We have a seasoned trainer as a coach in Zico , perhaps had major share in
selection of the team. There is no doubt that he has not been doing half
hearted job. The other teams that F.C. has encountered are far more
better opponents. We are emotionally attached to our team and it is
perfectly normal. The progress in the different matches has not been
satisfying graph of progression and that is what disappoints the die hard
supporters. That we do not have shooters to finish is poor acceptance of
decision. The final analysis depends on scoring, which is a crowning glory
The team with 5 Indian members is not an answer to improve the standard of
the game. Spectator status does not lead to assimilation of the best
skills. There is no doubt that ISL has drawn pointed attention to football
as sports in India like never before

The foreign players well into retirement in active game are passed 40 years
, but still show great promise and tenacity to hold their fort, They are
offered astronomical amounts in crores for the participation, besides other
undisclosed perks and in comparison to Indian players This ISL is another
carnaval like IPL fighting for space in sports .The spectators and
supporters have lost heavily betting on their horse with some hope of
turning around .The promoters have got their publicity and monies worth
twice over. The spectators are the worst and only losers I in the present
ISL and should not blame others for their misplaced trust emotionally on
F,C Goa. It is a nice entertainment that has caught the fancy of supporters
and to that extent the venture has served its purposes, as only Cricket
enjoyed the status of supper sports Those playing football are far more
than those watching cricket as God of all sports, That position is
definitely threatened by ISL successful venture and it will improve at the
next occasion

[Goanet] Nepal books at GALF in The Economist

2014-10-30 Thread V M
Three internationally acclaimed new non-fiction books have emerged at
the same time from/about Nepal at the end of 2014.

Thanks to the initiative of Abhay K(umar), diplomat/poet/artist at the
Indian embassy in Kathmandu, all three authors and books will be part
of an unprecedented Nepal showcase at Goa Arts + Literature Festival
2014 (December 4-7 goaartlitfest.com).

Aditya Adhikari's 'The Bullet and the Ballot Box' will have its
exclusive India release at GALF 2014. Read more about the book here:
http://www.versobooks.com/books/1722-the-bullet-and-the-ballot-box

Thomas Bell's 'Kathmandu' and Prashant Jha's 'Battles of the New
Republic: A Contemporary History of Nepal' are reviewed together in
this week's The Economist magazine:

http://www.economist.com/news/books-and-arts/21629209-two-books-offer-contrasting-views-himalayan-nation-between-rock-and-high-place

NEPAL is a country of nearly 30m people occupying a strategic spot
between India and China. It has immense hydropower potential—the
Himalayan rivers could run enough turbines to light much of northern
India. If only it were stable and properly run, an already attractive
country could become richer and far more appealing to investors,
tourists and residents.

After two decades of turmoil, signs of progress can be hard to divine.
The world’s only Hindu monarchy survived a massacre by a drunk,
disgruntled, heavily armed prince in 2001, but then collapsed within
seven years. A Maoist-led civil war spread misery. Clashes between a
brutal army and guerrillas, as well as torture, kidnapping and murder
by both sides, dragged on for a decade and killed some 18,000 people
before a stalemate in 2006. The war achieved little, but the Maoists
at least ended up switching to politics.

Yet Nepal’s politics can be dispiriting. Leaders look venal, wasteful
and self-centred. By one estimate 80% of aid is stolen in some rural
districts. A Constituent Assembly had four years to draw up a
constitution and failed. Another is under way. Politicians haggle,
betray and rarely think of their countrymen. To prosper, young
Nepalese toil in Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Over half of all households
now rely, to some extent, on the nearly $5 billion sent back each year
in remittances .

Two new books on Nepal, both by journalists, offer sharp assessments
of how the country is faring. Thomas Bell (formerly a contributor to
The Economist) makes Kathmandu his focus. His account is part memoir
(he marries and settles in the capital), part war reporter’s
travelogue and part political history. He is captivated by Kathmandu’s
art, architecture and unpredictable layers of history. But with its
thriving cartels and gangsters, the city is growing monstrous, smelly
and chaotic. The next big earthquake could cause appalling destruction
to its poorly built towers. It is a “mixed-up small town, swallowed by
a giant conurbation”, concludes Mr Bell.

His passion, and his frustration with those who misrule, are well
expressed, though his tone is occasionally too scathing. Politicians
perform a “farce of shameless, naked greed and short-sighted
incompetence”; one party’s leaders are “flabby hypocrites”; the
political “system” serves only to extract resources to benefit the
elite. Donors are no better. If they are not looting artistic
treasures, they connive in graft. He posits that much of Nepal’s $1
billion annual aid grant ends up as salaries for foreigners or in the
wrong Nepalese pockets. Worse yet are the British spies who played a
secret, shameful part in the civil war with an anti-terrorist scheme,
“Operation Mustang”. If ever a Truth and Reconciliation Commission
considers the war, he says, Britain should be held to account.

Prashant Jha, a Nepalese journalist now based in Delhi, is more
hopeful. He too is frustrated by horse-trading politicians, inequality
of wealth and caste, incessant Indian meddling and the dreadful former
king. Yet perhaps with the benefit of distance, he is able to discern
a welcome pattern: Nepal is becoming more open, democratic, inclusive
and just. An “ambitious transformation” is under way, which he sees
mostly through a leftish lens.

His connections with senior Maoist leaders and politicians from his
native area—low plains known as the Terai—allow him to deliver an
admirably clear and well-told narrative. It is striking, for example,
to track how much the once-feared Maoists have conceded since laying
down their weapons in 2008. They ensured that Nepal would be a secular
republic. But they backed down on most other demands for land reform,
for 20,000 Maoist soldiers to get army jobs (only 1,500 did), and for
Nepal to get a powerful presidency rather than a parliament.

That readiness to compromise suggests Mr Jha’s limited optimism is
nicely judged. He also applauds changes in India’s behaviour. True, it
continues to meddle: Nepal was never colonised by the British; nor was
it fully independent, a pattern that continues with India. But India
shows more dexterity

[Goanet] What is the priority

2014-10-30 Thread Nelson Lopes
 What is the priority?

Citizens need many facilities, which many be short term or log term. The
Govt, in its wisdom has been given mandate to do just that. It does not
however mean that the Govt. can ride rough shod in believing what is best
for them without gauzing the public pulse or sounding the public. The
arrogance of being in power, unanswerable, care two hoots, I know
everything attitude and what is best is not justifiable in a Democracy.
That is why in a Democracy a vigilant opposition is much essential to keep
the treasury benches under check and control, unfortunately both at the
centre and in some States, the opposition is badly mauled to be any force
and break towards authoritarian streak

The case in point is about necessity of bridge at Siroda and another
airport at Mopa ,People forget that in their travel journey they cross many
towns and villages where people have surrendered their personal preferences
and good for a larger benefit and goal. Siroda residents need better
connectivity with places in the state, saving time and money to reach their
destinations. The bitter objections makes no sense Politicians need
controversies as their essential diet to show their existence , feel
relevant and be counted more in the public eye to demonstrate their
unwarranted interests and concerns to perpetuate their being in corridors
of power for entirely selfish reasons .Are the bridges at Talpona, Galgibaga
etc given the preference they deserve in fast pacing their age old
requirements Two bridges connecting Navelim in Salcette was really needed
considering vehement objections be it political or rational after nearly
completing one of the bridges at public cost. Is the second Mandovi bridge
a burning necessity, when Zuari bridge is almost crumbling and likely to
disrupt a vital link between North and South

Are broadening of National, State Highways internal roads more important
and need to be prioritized? Acquired areas in 1986 are not even cleared of
encroachments and lying in limbo. The dangerous bends , curves causing
serious and fatal accidents are crying for attention

The Govt. is hell bent on pushing through Mopa airport, when there is
massive outbursts and opposition from all quarters. It may be a long time
need and the experts rather than layman are best suited to decide based on
economic and transport needs. The airport, not centrally suited can be a
bone of contention considering time to reach, road conditions and costs
involved

Let ht e roads used by the majorities be a first and urgent priority. When
Konkan railway was being built the objections were insurmountable and
fierce .We now see how convenient, safe, economic Konkan Railway travel is.
It is not susprising the vociferous votaries are using Konkan railway
without ever remembering their opposition.

[Goanet] SMILE…………………… IT’S WEEKEND (30/10/2014)

2014-10-30 Thread CAJETAN DE

IT HAS……..

A lady (Dumelin) was slowly recovering from a heart attack.
She pleaded with her cardiologist (Dr. Pereira):-

Dumelin: Doctor, you must keep me alive for the next two years. I want to be
there for my grand-son's First Holy Communion.

Dr. Pereira: (compassionately) We'll try.

Sometime later Dumelin again spoke to her Doctor:

Dumelin: My grand-daughter is to be married in 15 months. Please help me to be
able to attend her wedding.

Dr. Pereira: We'll do our best.

Dumelin happily attended her grand-daughter's wedding.

Seven years passed. Dumelin visited her cardiologist regularly and followed his
instructions. One morning she called Dr. Pereira:

Dumelin: Doctor, I am feeling fine, but I have another request to ask of you.
Remember how you saw me through to my grand-son's First Holy Communion
Celebration?.

Dr. Pereira: Yes.

Dumelin: And later how you helped me to attend my grand-daughter's wedding?

Dr. Pereira: Yes.

Dumelin: Well, as you know I have just celebrated my 83rd birthday. And my
son-in-law gifted me a new mattress.

Dr. Pereira: I see.

Dumelin: It has a 20-year guarantee...

Dr. Pereira: ???
