[Goanet] [GOANET] OPEN LETTER: QUO VADIS AAP... JUST WHAT THE HELL IS THE TOP LEADERSHIP SMOKING? [OSCAR REBELLO]
Dear Dr Jose Colaco and Dr Oscar Rebello, I have tried to avoid writing controversial letters especially related to politics because each one has their own way of thinking, but just thought I would share my thoughts since I am a well wisher of the AAP party and I am confident that it will clean up the corruption which is ruining our country. With regards to Aam Admi Party (AAP), I happened to get acquainted with this party in Goa during their infancy. I interacted with the tall leader of AAP, Mr. Yogendra Yadav in Goa. We had a meeting at the Goa Chamber of Commerce in Panjim near Cafe Real. There were about 20 to 30 invitees and I was one of those present. The way he put his points across was excellent and superb. I really appreciated this gentleman and predicted he would one day shine in the party. Unfortunately he had to leave this party along with Adv.Prashant Bushan. After the Delhi elections took place, AAP swept the polls with 67 seats (AAP) against 3 seats (BJP). Arwind Kejriwal Leader of AAP nowadays has many internal problems with great leaders like Yogendra Yadav and Prasant Bushan deciding to leave the party. Lots of people are sending Open Letters trying to ensure a patch up since the AAP party seems the best hope for clean governance. Dr. Oscar Rebello also seems to be trying to achieve a patch up. Others are implying that this is part of an attempt to get a ticket, which may or may not be the case. However, I believe that Dr. Oscar quitting his well paying clinic to join into politics will never takes place because he is well settled in Panjim with high charges or fees and an elite patient base. Lastly, in general, I do not agree with the statement made by Dr. Jose Colaco about doctors and politics. Earlier we had a number of Doctors in Goa joining politics, for example Dr. Willy D’Sousa a great surgeon from Saligao who after returning from UK has entered into this political business and also remained for few months as CM of Goa, Dr. Carmo Pegado also joined politics, also Dr. Wilfred Mesquita who is continuing as spokes person in BJP and who is managing to survive inspite of so many hassles, Dr. Jack Sequeira was Opinion Leader of Goa Democratic Party. Dr Luis Prota Barbosa ex-CM also took part in politics and many more. I wish the AAP party all the best and hope that they resolve their differences without allowing others to aggravate the situation. I'd merely state the following: Doctors, in general, make very poor politicians. Having observed you over the years, I believe you would do very well NEVER to quit your day job. Politics is not meant for physicians, especially honest and dedicated physicians like you. Three closing points: (1) A team player NEVER writes Open Letters to Party Central, unless he is about to quit OR wishes to draw attention to one's own self (2) it would be an absolute miracle IF you, dear doctor, would win an election from Panjim or thereabouts unless on a BJP, MGP or Congress ticket. (3) Political Parties are not know to give tickets to writers of Open Letters to Central. Hence consider yourself self-disqualified after scoring an own goal. I felt bad that JFR had to bring forth his contributions both in service and while retired and those of the community, to various aspects of India's progress, it's defence and it's education. It was almost pathetic, for want of a better word, that this great man who easily hobnobs with the most powerful in India would bring out to bolster his argument the incident at an airport in which a Hindu Brahmin couple working in Kuwait, recognized him and showed great respect. JFR must realize that if and when real harassment and persecution of the Christian community and it's institutions come, it will not be from the likes of his colleagues, or from the educated Hindu middle class but from the populous rabble of India's uneducated masses who are susceptible to being brought to a frenzy by criminal and callous politicians. These are the people he must really shut down through his powerful friends but India being a democracy in the worst and weakest sense of that word, will stand helpless while it is being done and only learn in hindsight. Not to say that learning lessons like other countries do, is India's forte, as it's history since independence proves. [Goanet] Cut-Off
Cut-Off TNN | Mar 18, 2015, 02.00 AM IST Times Panchanama: Guirdolim-Salcete Isidore Domnick Mendes The village of Guirdolim is divided into two parts by a railway line passing through it. This has affected the 3,000-strong population of the village. For every time, they need to get across they have to make do with the daunting task of waiting excruciatingly at the railway crossing until the locomotive passes through. Guirdolim comprises 19 vaddos including Covatem, Kantem, Birbullem, Bandul, Ponsabhat , Mol 11, Modem, Niamorod, Ghod, Mathodi, Gall, Revorda, Bacho, Marrod, Kotting Gainal, Moll 1 ,Roinibhat, Anthoi and Kollos. It shares its borders with the villages of Curtorim, Macasana, Chandor and Assolda. These vaddos are situated on either side of the railway line and are separated from each other once the railway gate closes. For the record, the people of Guirdolim share this agony of waiting at the railway crossing along with the villages of Cansaulim-Arossim-Cuelim (Mormugao), Sanvordem ( Sanguem), and Seraulim (Salcete), who also have a railway line cutting through their lands. In Guirdolim, the Our Lady of Bethlehem Church, built in 1645, the graveyard and the market is on one side of the railway line, while the village panchayat and the St Francis Xavier chapel is on the other side. Road traffic in this village gets halted in regular frequency of every 30 minutes for the south central railway traffic including locomotive freight carriers and numerous passenger trains, to pass through.Between 7am and 8.30am and 4pm and 6.30pm, there is a serpentine queue of road traffic on both sides of railway gate. Guirdolim villagers, since the past many decades, have been demanding for a solution, either in the form of a rail overbridge and a vehicle underpass. Till date, the solution has eluded them. Around the year, we face the inconvenience of the railway gate closing at regular intervals. Guirdolim is one of the most serene and beautiful villages of Goa. It is disheartening that the villagers are still waiting for a permanent solution, says Fr Jose Gomes, chaplain of St Francis Xavier Chapel. Says Luis R A D'Costa of Mol 11, Our efforts have been futile. We, the people of Guirdolim, have spent energy and time for years pleading with the authorities by asking for a permanent solution in the form of an overbridge or an underpass motorized road. Our demands hardly matter for the powers-that-be. Villagers feel that the separation of Guirdolim from Chandor-Cavorim and the creation of two separate village panchayats; Chandor Cavorim on one hand and Guirdolim on the other, has led to the non-fulfillment of promises on development works in Guirdolim village by politicians. Guirdolim should have been part and parcel of Chandor and Cavorim panchayat. No major work, including a solution to the railway crossing issue, has been given to us, says Antonio Vaz of Moll 1. Villagers blame political parties for the mess. From1977 till 2014, both the Congress and BJP has sent 12 MPs to the Lok Sabha. Congress had 10 MPs including Eduardo Faleiro (5 terms), Churchill Alemao (2 terms), and Francisco Sardinha (3 terms). From the BJP, Ramakant Angle served one 1 term, while current incumbent Narendra Sawaikar is serving his first term. Even during the campaigning for the last Lok Sabha polls in April 2014, BJP's South Goa candidate Sawaikar and then CM Manohar Parrikar, had promised that work on the overbridge in Guirdolim would begin in six months. There is no sign of this promise being fulfilled as of yet with 10 months having passed since the BJP formed the government at the Centre. Guirdolim was carved as a separate unit from Chandor so that the village would get better developed. Unfortunately, development has taken a back seat. A lasting solution to the railway crossing issue looks like a mirage. The people of Guirdolim hardly believe that the authorities will ever deliver on their promise of a rail overbridge, says a young resident, Gillian D'Costa, from Mol 11. The panchayat is with the people in their demand for a solution. The closed railway gate divides our village as they cannot travel from one end to the other. People of Guirdolim have faced unending problems in the absence of a solution to the railway crossing issue. The state government should request the central government to give us a rail overbridge as a priority, says sarpanch Sonia Dias. Concurs Flavia D'Costa, a panchayat member and a resident of Moll 1. Getting a rail overbridge, as soon as possible, would be one of the most important gifts for Guirdolim after we were carved out as a separate village panchayat. Agrees Joe D'Souza of Roinibhat, The authorities, whether the Centre, the state or the local panchayat, have to act in tandem to get the demand for the rail overbridge fulfilled. [Goanet] THE JUDICIAL KNOT
Many may be curious as to why Goa’s very controversial and infamous Advocate General Atmaram Nadkarni is toiling so very hard to try and save the beleaguered Mapusa Judge Dvijple Patkar who has now been charge sheeted by the Margao Police. Their fusion is allegedly because of a high stake matter Special Civil Suit No. 31/2013 being heard by Judge Dvijple Patkar in which Atmaram Nadkarni is defending Liquor Baron Vijay Mallya from his Kingfisher Villa at Candolim being taken over by the banks as part-payment of his outstanding debt. Ironically last year on the floor of the Goa Legislative Assembly then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar while strongly lambasting then CBI Court Judge PV Sawaikar had stoutly eulogised Dvijple Patkar as a very skilled and capable Judge. It now reveals that all that blab by Manohar Parrikar was apparently at the instance of Atmaram Nadkarni for being able to successfully keep his prized client Vijay Mallya on judicial life support from the brewing banking vows. Now that the ‘skilled’ judge has been skinned and charge sheeted by his very own police, it is left to be seen what Manohar Parrikar has to say. [Goanet] Church and state - Editorial IE Mum March 18th 2015
From: bcsabha.kal...@gmail.com To: http://indianexpress.com/article/opinion/editorials/church-and-state-2/ Exactly a month ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke a silence in a speech to a gathering of Christian leaders in the national capital. “We believe there is truth in every religion,” the PM said. His government would ensure “complete freedom of faith,” he said, and would “not allow any religious group, belonging to the majority or minority, to incite hatred against others, overtly or covertly”. On Tuesday, as the PM expressed concern and sought immediate reports on the vandalisation of an under-construction church in Kaimri village in Haryana and the rape of a 71-year-old nun in Nadia district of West Bengal, it seemed sadly evident that minority anxieties had once again been stoked. A month later, the task of the prime minister and his government — of speaking to these insecurities and assuaging them — has only grown more urgent. In these columns, on Monday, former Punjab DGP Julio Ribeiro, who helped this nation win the battle against terrorism in the state, wrote movingly about being part of a community that feels under siege, on a “hit list”, in its own country. “Today, in my 86th year, I feel threatened, not wanted, reduced to a stranger… I am not an Indian anymore, at least in the eyes of the proponents of the Hindu Rashtra”. He wrote of the “systematic targeting of a small and peaceful community”, of “extremists” who were “emboldened beyond permissible limits by an atmosphere of hate and distrust”, and campaigns such as “ghar wapsi”, attacks on Christian churches and schools in the nation’s capital, and the declaration of Christmas as “Good Governance Day”. In such an atmosphere, the same narrative of fear and anxiety seems to join the attack on the Haryana church to the crime perpetrated in West Bengal. In this climate, moreover, even though law and order is a state subject and it is the responsibility of the Manohar Lal Khattar and Mamata Banerjee governments to ensure that the guilty are quickly brought to book, the onus is also on the Modi government. Ever since it took over last year in May, after a comprehensive victory on the promise of change, the Modi government has seemed sincere in many of its efforts to reinvigorate the India story that was seen to be sagging for several reasons, including a political Centre that seemed to have lost its energy and the plot. But an essential part of the India story is made up of the space and respect it accords to its minorities. At a time when a minority community is feeling under siege, this government and its institutions must honour and underline that reality and promise — they are bound by the Constitution to do so.
[Goanet] RAISING STANDARDS
In today's polarized atmosphere,it behooves our Press and electronic media to raise their standards, not lower it! It is essential to remain neutral and give different points of view a level playing field. Talk shows should be controlled so the subject is equally balanced between the Hindutva forces and equal number of counter arguments on the panel! I am surprised to find that even newspapers like TOI give headlines of only VHP pronouncements on attack on Hissar church, holding sexual exploitation of nuns a Christian culture and even Haryana CM saying the priest of the church that was demolished was luring Hindu youths by promising them brides!(TOI 17Mar). I may state that allowing anaap shanap statements must stop! You obviously cannot build a temple in a Gurudwara like in the Vatican? And plenty of Hindu Godmen are associated with rape corruption and other crimes. Good reporting would print incendiary headlines after getting a response from the said priest, and if the church was being built illegally. Further these statements are communal and no action is taken, neither the Press follows up!It is shameful that even someone like Julio Rebeiro who protected the RSS from insurgent forces in Punjab feels unsafe in his own country whom he has risked his and his family's lives to serve! NO ONE IS PERFECT. How long will the BJP live in denial?
[Goanet] ban on cow slaughter
Ban on cow slaughter 1) Cows are reared primarily for milk production. After their productive period if ban is imposed, the economics of maintaining them makes no sense to those who depend on the byproducts of animal husbandry. Slowly the rearing of cows will die a natural death and the Govt. in future will have to dispense special subsidy for rearing and maintenance after their productive period. Otherwise the poor farmer will not be too enamoured, enthusiastic to perpetuate the culture and sentiments of HOLY COW syndrome. May be the rich will have to adopt cows to continue cow sentiments or import them. And supply to temples as living deities. It may also lead to depletion of regional gene bank. The Govt. should pay adequate compensation to such cows and open up cow farms for rehabilitation The dung cakes were used as fuel, organic compost and in generation of gobar gas, the hide for tanneries, bones for bone meal fertilizer, meat for various products, and fat for candles and soap manufacture. In villages cows are also in use for ploughing fields, cattle carts and others use for begging exploiting religious sentiments. Anti cow slaughter will be against farmers, agriculture, and agro industries It is not enough to cite constitutional provisions and religious sentiments without simple mechanism to dispose animals after productive period adequate compensation and maintenance. These cows disowned by farmers are street hazards and forage on other cash crops causing nuisance and loss. This legislation which is much harsher than other criminal offences, is gloated upon by Hindu Chauvinists and the avowed intention of P.M to explore the possibility of all India application is pandering to Hindutva agenda for narrow political gains it is covertly and obliquely designed to hit hard the minority community, who depend on this trade for a living and earnings form exports. Some states have modified laws preventing cow slaughter Hindus cannot hold their antagonistic attitudes towards beef eaters . Many Hindus outside India are not choosy about eating beef and pork are non plus. I know of Hindu families cooking pork for their children without consuming themselves Hindus in Coorg,H.P etc have beef as their diet. In the Arab countries pork sale is restricted to non Muslims is available in stores but is not banned. In Goa many times people are seen gobbling sausages at bars and then washing their mouths with the flavor of peppermints. This was in August last year. The Ganpati season last year, when the train was used for 20 premium market-controlled fare trips between Mumbai and Goa, was also a resounding failure, with occupation of the train hovering around the 19-percent mark between August and September.“We cannot be emotional about any train. If for some reason it is not doing well on a particular zone or route, then we need to shift to some other route where the returns might be better. The railways is cash-strapped and we cannot allow a new product like an air-conditioned double-decker rake to suffer from poor occupancy,” said an official in the know. The other problem, according to the officials, was to give a permanent slot to the train since KR’s route is already packed with long-distance and goods trains. The train was brought to the city in May last year, and tested on the Konkan Railway route between Roha and Madgaon on May 20-21 to see how the rake — which has a height in excess of the normal long-distance trains — fared on the route with 68 tunnels. The Research Design Standards Organisation (RDSO) — the railways’ apex technical authority — gave its technical clearance to running the train on the Mumbai-Goa route in June.Published Date: Mar 17, 2015

[Goanet-News] New book tells of one man's encounter with the complex reality of colonial and post-colonial Africa
PANJIM: Goans migrated to Africa for decades, but it is only in recent times that their role there is sought to be more closely understood via the world of books. That this reality was complex, and not unproblematic, became clear at the recent launch of Luis de Assis Correia's memoirs 'Winds of Change Across Africa 1958-1969', published by Broadway Publishing House. Octogenarian Correia, who lives both in Benaulim (Goa) and the UK, narrates his experiences in an Africa, then just in the process of getting Independence, and his encounters with a number of persons who went on to become prominent national leaders in countries like Kenya, Uganda, and even the father of the future President of the United States, Barrack Obama. I've only narrated my history, said Correia. Correia started off life in the world of the travel agency. He narrated his early encounters with Tom Mboya, the East African Airways charter taking African students to the United States, and his experiences in Kenya, Tanganyika and Zanzibar. Writer Vivek Menezes appreciated the fact that much more writing is coming out of Goa, which tells many different untold stories. Speakers highlighted the role of Goans in the diaspora -- in Karachi, Ceylon, Republican Portugal, modern Kenya, and more. Book reviewer Augusto Pinto called it a very interesting work, while historian Dr Celsa Pinto called it really a fascinating story. You've really added a lot to what many Goans would (have otherwise) not known, said Pinto, a former Director of Education in Goa. Born in Africa himself, he noted those were tense times for Goans. In some ways (in East Africa or Pakistan), the Goan story has not ended that well, said Menezes. Winds of... is itself dedicated to Tom Mboya and Pio Gama Pinto, the mostly forgotten rare Goan who took the side of the Black nationalist cause, and post-Independence, and paid with his life for his pro-people, radical politics. In his pages, we also encounter the part-Goan Guirim-linked Joseph Zuzarte Murumbi (1911-1990), Kenya's second Vice President for a brief year-and-half in the mid 1960s. Speakers felt the story of Goans in Zanzibar was perhaps yet to emerge. Some questions were asked about whether Goans were clannish, or intermediaries between the White masters and the Black Africans. The Goan encounter with the British via migration, as compared to the Portuguese, was also discussed. So was the contribution of the returning Goan diaspora in Africa also debated, and the impact of migration on out-migrants themselves. Writer Damodar Mauzo felt the perspectives of the humbler Goan migrant had not been adequately studied. 'Winds of Change Across Africa 1958-1969' is by Luis de Assis Correia, and published by Broadway Publishing House, priced at Rs 450. Re: [Goanet] Goanet - Great City?
On Tue, 3/17/15, Cecil Pinto wrote: Dear Mervyn, Your analysis of recent GoaNet posts is very interesting and insightful. But I do not know why you called Roland's post a bauble. Vivian lives many months of the year in Goa and the remaining months in various places in the USA including Baltimore. Even when in Goa Vivian travels around a lot and observes things and gets involved in real-life issues. What does Vivian know about cities and Baltimore and Panjim and Goa as compared to Roland Francis? After all Roland does more armchair research and analysis than any six overseas GoaNetters combined. Cecil, I can divide almost all the the people I know into two groups. Group Eh are those who keep an eye on the future and all its possibilities. Group A are those who only know what they know and spend most of their time reminiscing on the past. Vivian is in one group and Roland is in another. Come to think about it, Goanet itself seems to have morphed into a repository for things of the past. On a very good day, you may find one readable post of current affairs. Sadly, nearly all the people I have met here from Group Eh have gone. Some left with reluctance, others were forced out by common sense. Mervyn BTW, I too find it tough to read the opinion of anyone whose research concludes that there were man eating tigers in the Canadian wilds.

[Goanet] West Bengal: Cardinal Cleemis rushes to meet violated nun
From: bcsabha.kal...@gmail.com To: http://www.ucanindia.in/news/cardinal-cleemis-rushes-to-meet-violated-nun/28275/daily Cardinal Cleemis rushes to meet violated nunA 71-year old nun in the convent of Jesus and Mary was gang raped after alleged robbers broke into her residence Friday night.Posted on March 18, 2015, 8:40 AM Cardinal Baselios CleemisNew Delhi: Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India, is rushing to Kolkata today to meet the nuns of the convent that was attacked last Friday night. The cardinal along with Archbishop Thomas D'Souza of Kolkata and local officials will meet the sisters in the convent at Ranaghat, some 80 kilometers from Kolkata, said Father Joseph Chinnayan, deputy secretary general of the conference. A 71-year old nun in the convent Jesus and Mary was raped after alleged robbers broke into her residence Friday night. The gang of six men also ransacked the offices of the school and convent and took away money in an apparent robbery attempt. The elderly nun was injured in the violation and is now recapturing in a hospital. We want to express the solidarity of the Church in India with the sister who was violated in this inhuman and dastardly act, Father Chinnayan said. The senior priest who will accompany the cardinal to Kolkata said the meeting with nuns and local officials will help find the facts more accurately. Police said Monday that 10 men have been detained for questioning but no arrests have been made, even though the faces of four of the robbers were captured in the CCTV. Cardinal Cleemis in an earlier statement said the physical violence inflicted on the nuns, including the rape, were ruthless inhuman acts of which all Indian citizens should be ashamed of.

The current rate is between Rs 300 and Rs 1,000 per dozen. Untimely rains have damaged almost 30% crops. It will affect supply in the coming days. Normally, in the healthy season, we do not get damaged fruits,” said Sanjay Pansare, director at Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC).Pansare himself is a wholesale mango dealer. What’s the buying pattern?Normally, people wait till May and June to get the mango at cheaper rates. “But this year, there will not be a good second season. Therefore, mango lovers should enjoy their favourite fruit now,” says Pansare. Will the price increase?European countries have lifted the ban on mango imports from India. “We are exporting 17,000 boxes each day. Most of them are going to Gulf and Western countries. Very soon, European countries will also start importing the Alphonso. The high demand will lead to price rise,” a mango seller at APMC said. Why did Europe ban imports? The ban was imposed last year after they found some fruit flies. “Actually, in Konkan mangoes, there are no fruit flies. They are found mostly in mangoes grown in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Farmers in these states go for multiple crops. In Konkan, we do not follow a multiple crop pattern. Therefore, we get good quality mangoes,” Dinesh Sawant, a Konkan farmer, said. What about vegetable prices?APMC gets abundant supply of vegetables. As a result, rates are normal. “We receive 700 truckloads a day against the normal supply of 500. Also, due to untimely rains, farmers are bringing the produce to market early,” said Shankar Pingale, APMC director.Published Date: Mar 15, 2015http://epaper.dnaindia.com/story.aspx?id=76919boxid=28047ed_date=2015-03-15ed_code=820009ed_page=3 Rains hit crops in Nashik, 9,000 farmers affected Vaishali Balajiwale @dnaNashik: Incessant rains, hailstorm and strong winds have caused heavy damage to crops here. Unseasonal rains and hailstorm in Nashik district have been witnessed over the past three-four years. The present situation of rains and hail showers has been caused by the shift of polar jet stream, the winds blowing from west to east, southwards. Explaining this Shriniwas Aundhkar, director at Mahatma Gandhi Mission, Centre for Astronomy and Space Technology, Nanded said, “A a normal pattern the polar jet streams blow in India from Afghanistan and Pakistan and cross over Madhya Pradesh and Kanpur. As such the northern regions normally experience unseasonal rains and snow. However, as the north pole is experiencing more snowfall and so are regions up north in India, these winds are being pushed southwards due to the pressure. Presently they are seen blowing over Gujarat and western and central Maharashtra. Hence the hailstorms these regions are experiencing rains and hail storm”.This phenomenon has been witnessed for the last two-three years and has been observed seven-eight times this year itself. He added that the activity on the sun is affecting the earth.“If we observe the last two sun cycles where the sun activity is noted in the form of formation of sunspots it can be seen that normally the range of a sun cycle for sunspot activity is seen over a period of 11-11.5 years. However, the 23rd cycle from 1996 to 2009 ranged for
[Goanet] A Stanger In My Own Country- JFR
In my opinion JFR himself is the cause of all the problems faced by minorities in bharat. The end of bindranwalle in 1984 with the operation of bluestar finished the aspirations of many a Sikh. JFR should have stayed in Bombaim and ended the aspirations of those over the ground world with his 'encounters'. BC What gives a very brave man a siege mentality in his own country to the extent that he has to prove his stellar service to his nation? Are things really that bad? Have incidents like the burning down of a few churches in ignorant Hindu pockets of northern India, dastardly rapes of hardworking nuns, criticism of St and Mother Theresa and other similar but isolated incidents really got the community's back to the walls? I felt bad that JFR had to bring forth his contributions both in service and while retired and those of the community, to various aspects of India's progress, it's defence and it's education.
