[Goanet] Awakening to the Cosmos within - Vivek Menezes on Clarice Vaz's work

2015-08-04 Thread Cecil Pinto
In her light-filled house skirted by rice paddies in a peaceful vaddo
of Saligao, Clarice Vaz is steadily building a unique oeuvre of
artworks that are a formidable monument to her irrepressible passion,
and a profoundly moving tribute to her beloved son, the late Craig
Vaz.

Vaz signs her artwork with Craig’s name to keep it alive forever,
permanently cherished by the owners of his mother’s paintings, as they
circulate around the world and in Goa. Their increasing popularity
should not come as a surprise, despite the fact their creator is a
registered nurse who has only turned to painting full-time relatively
recently. This because Clarice Vaz has been relentlessly, and highly
impressively, innovative with her techniques and themes. The
self-taught “fluid”technique yields canvases that are hypnotically
powerful, drawing the viewer deep into glimpses of eternity. The
“spin” paintings - executed on a home-made machine in the Vaz back
garden - pack an irresistible, colourful punch. The additional suite
of “syringe’ paintings are perhaps unique in art history – they
required a nurse’s expert hand to create these extraordinarily
detailed works depicting an idealized Goa.

Today’s art world is dominated by manufactured superstars, by
surface-deep cleverness and calculation. This leave little spaces for
sincerity, for sheer perseverance. But these are precisely the rare
the characteristics that shine through Clarice Vaz’s work, palpably
imbued with love and dedication, and the compulsive quest for the
divine spark that fuels this artist’s vision.

It is not a secret that Craig Vaz was felled by a very rare,
undiagnosed ailment that his mother also carries. But Clarice Vaz
refuses treatment, and instead paints for hours every day. The
practice of deep meditation with her artistic tools and innovative
mediums is – quite literally – a life-saver. This too can been seen in
the artwork, these are paintings that truly matter.

For the path-breaking art exhibition, Aparanta, which took place in
the Old GMC building in Panjim in 2007, the brilliant curator and
writer Ranjit Hoskote took several days to travel around Goa, to visit
artists in their home studios. At that time, there was very little
local interest for most of them, coupled with a strong national
resistance to the very idea of “Goan art”.

But Hoskote detected the presence of something truly significant
happening in scattered villages across Goa. Noting that Goan artists
have fed art world for generations like “an invisible river”, he
reported being shocked to repeatedly find “meteorically brilliant
artists” languishing unknown because of “a lack of context”. Goa
glaringly lacked critics and collectors with the wherewithal and
confidence to celebrate talent where it flourished. Instead, shallow
diktats from Delhi and Mumbai held sway, even here in the land of
Fonseca and Trindade and Gaitonde, and Saligao’s own Francis Newton
Souza.

Less than a decade after Hoskote magisterially registered Goa’s
twenty-first century art trajectory in the national imagination, many
things have changed for the better. Some artists in Goa have started
to earn real success, and national critical appreciation. The
collector base is steadily burgeoning. But the challenge still remains
whether this still-forming art world can understand and accept real
artistic talent and guts when it shows up unannounced, or from an
unexpected source. Clarice Vaz’s heartfelt paintings demand that kind
of recognition, and our collective congratulations for her remarkable
achievement.

The Book Tent will be featuring two novels by local author Braz Menezes.

'Just Matata: Sin, Saints and Settlers' and 'More Matata: Love after the
Mau Mau' are historical novels that span the first half of the 20th
century and richly illustrate Goan life during and in post British
Africa and Portuguese Goa. The stories are funny, sad, and evocative.
They will engage you and expose a world that existed a short 50 years
ago. Both novels have been well received and are recommended reading.

Sadly, Braz will not be able to attend the event as planned. I will make
arrangements for anyone who wished to have their purchases personally
signed by the author.

[Goanet] GFDO Press Note

2015-08-04 Thread Edwin/Diana Pinto
GFDO PRESS NOTE

GFDO wondered why CM Parsekar was so willing to accede to the demand of the
Union Defence Minister that 6 lakh square metres of land be allotted to the
Defence Ministry for Defexpo and other related events in Betul. As the Chief
Minister of Goa, it is Mr. Parsekar’s bounden duty to look after and protect
the interests of Goa and Goans. Surely CM Parsekar is aware that tiny Goa has
very scarce land resources compared to other states like Bihar, Maharashtra and
Uttar Pradesh among others. Therefore, as CM, it is his responsibility to not
only halt further unwarranted acquisitions, but work tirelessly to recover the
large parcels of precious Goan land that have been needlessly occupied by the
Defence forces as Mr. Parrikar himself had time and again pointed out as
Leader of Opposition and subsequently Chief Minister of Goa.

However, in yet another U turn, the former Chief Minister has declared his
Defence Ministry’s intention of swallowing even more of Goa’s scarce and
precious land for the purpose of holding Defexpo which will in no way benefit
either Goa or Goans. It will be recalled that as CM, Mr. Parrikar himself had
said in the Assembly that ‘It is easier to get the army to vacate from Lahore,
but not from even an inch of land in Panaji. I completely support the army and
navy, but I cannot understand this possessive thing they have about land. This
is not right. We will not give land for a naval enclave in Mopa.” Mr. Parrikar
should tell Goans what has changed since then.

If Mr. Parrikar genuinely has the interests of Goa and Goans at heart, he
should put an end to the stifling of Dabolim Airport by the government and use
his good offices at the Centre to ensure that the shoddy and unsafe
construction of Dabolim Airport Terminal is repaired and restored to good
condition. After all, it is a matter of safety of passengers and staff that is
at stake and of course Rs.500 crores of taxpayers’ money that has been used to
construct the terminal.

As Union Defence Minister, right at the helm of affairs in the Defence
Ministry, Divine Providence has placed Mr. Parrikar in a perfect position
wherein he has been endowed with the capability to fulfil his own request made
in December 2013 to Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh on the occasion
of the inauguration of the new Dabolim Airport terminal to “consider us (Goa)
also a part of India and give us some extra land at Dabolim.” What stops Mr.
Parrikar as Defence Minister from sanctioning the extra land that is so
vitally needed for growth and development of Dabolim Airport? Does he himself
not consider Goa a part of India?

For the people of Goa, this is the decisive moment that will test the
credibility and sincerity of Mr. Parrikar. It is distressing that although Mr.
Parrikar spoke as a Goan in his past avatars both as Leader of Opposition as
well as Chief Minister, he appears to have made a very quick and smooth
transition to the Delhi mindset. It is sad when Goans forget their roots and
look upon their home state (Goa) as fair game to lubricate and further their
own career prospects at the centre of power, even at the cost of their
homeland.

 Fr. Eremito Rebelo Convenor

[Goanet] implement cabinet decison says FORCE

2015-08-04 Thread Nelson Lopes
implement cabinet decision says FORCE

The precipitation of the crisis is due to provocative utterances of Mr
Davlikar to rescind the cabinet decision on MOI.The C.M has not clarified
his statement and allowed it to float, perhaps to test the waters.Mr
Davlikar is a responsible member of the cabinet not to understand the
consequences of the bombshell. Instead emphasis is on to find out who
motivated the crowd It is not right to insinuate a priest when the masses
took to the street in defense of their rights, as parents.Their simple
demand is to make into law the cabinet decision, so that permanent
uncertainties are laid to rest.is it too much to ask?Mr Parikar the
architect of the solution is enjoying the ring side view, as the C.M is not
to his nominee. The legislators instead of debating the issue are trying to
persuade the secretary with the promise of future action The argument that
the decision is with the select committee is a non stater. It is the usual
method of keeping it into hibernation to postponed and delay
indefinitely. There has been enough time for this suggestion to have been
implemented The Congress is now shedding crocodile tears, having done
precious nothing when they were in power, but allowed it to fester. The
public show of sympathising is only to resurrect their sagging electoral
fortunes. The BJP has enough strength to carry the motion, but deliberately
fuelling the opponents to take pot shots Prominent protagonist want to
force their views on general public, unable to see the truth in their own
backyard,Other legislators have their wards educated even ouside the
country. The lobby of private English medium schools are raking the mola,
laughing all the way to the bank , Concerned parents are forced to cough up
to secure the the future of their wards ,Mr Davlikar was a party to this
decision and dared not open his mouth when Mr Parikar was in the chair Some
elements are putting family pressure to dilute the determination and
resolve to persue the issue to its logical end this session to test the
sincerity of past evasive promises. The Govt has withdrawn permission for
peaceful agitation and now acting tough further. Isolated voices are
propagating the short inconvenience caused to general public. The
inconveniences caused over delayed periods due to suspension power , water
strikes etc are more damning. The idea to prosecute the protesters will
backfire as an oppressive procedure for legitimate peaceful demonstration
to wake up the slumbering authorities
True laws are not made on streets, but the legislators are not serious to
recognise the wishes of their voters. The support received to the movement
from all over Goa is not limited to Salcette Taluka or minorities alone
In the past too the minorities were always at the receiving end of
insinuations during language agitations, opinion poll, statehood and now
MOI. It will unwise to ignore the health conditions of the secretary of
FORCE, hopping it will peter off due to exhaustion. The perils of such
manipulations are fraught with dangerous consequences, be warned

DOES MODI LIVE IN FEAR?

By Dr. Francisco Colaço

(COURTESY GOAN OBSERVER dt. Aug 1, 2015)

PM Modi seems a forlorn figure unsure of himself,

a far cry from his pre-election behaviour

We fear
violence less than our own feelings. Personal, private, solitary pain is more
terrifying than what anyone else can inflict

Jim
Morrison

If one looks at the visage
of PM Modi in recent times and compares it to the one just before the elections,
it is striking that the effervescence in his countenance has all but vanished.
As
of today he looks like a worried man trying to exorcise his ghosts. Earlier,
there was immense euphoria and his mien (along with his 56-inch chest) exuded
exuberance
and enthusiasm as he crisscrossed the country promising the moon to those who
would bring him to power. There was no need for anyone to doubt or think twice
because, we were made to believe, he had the capacity to bring rivers of
economic prosperity. What is more, corruption would be a thing of the past; he
would usher in an era where everyone would be able to feel and savour acche
din... in other words, the brightest future one could ever
fathom. And those were no empty promises, for sure, because he really sounded
like he had a magic wand to the extent that everything he touched would turn to
gold!

EMPTY PROMISES

Merely a year on, the
rhetoric begins to fade as he fails to deliver on most counts. Soon he begins
to realise that being head of a national party organization is an entirely
different challenge from being the chief minister of a state. True, the prime
minister is
first among equals in the national parliament, but he miserably comes to realize
that he is just second fiddle to the powerful leaders who govern the states
that make up India’s federal system and these are people who bear battle scars
inflicted by caste
politics and the virulent anti-incumbency tendencies that rile India’s state
elections.

REMOTE CONTROL

Moreover it is a truism
that BJP cannot alienate itself from its remote-control, the RSS daddy. Modi’s
sordid track record of stoking anti-minority sentiments, both in Gujarat and
nationally surely must be coming to haunt him at every moment while he is
incessantly
being egged on to toe more and more the line of the right-wing Hindu fanatics.

His silence on the
Lalitgate and the Vyapam scams places doubt in his competence to deal with
major crises within his own party and has dented his reputation as a taskmaster
leaving behind deep gashes which Modi will find difficult to heal.

Promoting peaceful
relations with India’s neighbours is vital for creating a geopolitical
situation conducive to economic growth but Modi has miserably failed to deal
effectively with Pakistan and non-state actors operating from across the border
and this will continue to be a thorn in his side.

TEESTA NEMESIS

It is said that the
brave crusader Teesta was thus named by her father after a river in Bangladesh
which flows fearlessly across the border. Why does Modi fear the fearless Teesta
so much?

For one it is
undeniable that Modi would like to roll back the clock, consign the 2002
Gujarat carnage to the dustbin of history and replace Teesta Setalvad as the
villain, who hounded the then chief minister. Then, there are so many other
fearless
and selfless crusaders breathing down his neck for allegedly curbing human
rights.

But “can the collective
amnesia on the Gujarat riots, and the view that we must move on be ever
legitimized?”
asks Indira Jaising. “Yes”, she goes on, “it could possibly happen if one day
Zakia
Jafri and Teesta Setalvad, who are doing everything constitutionally and
legally possible to hold the head of the then government accountable, are
checkmated, gagged, and put into jail.”

Admittedly, conspiracies
are not easy to prove, but judging from the attack on Teesta Setalvad, the PM
seems worried and insecure that there is an off chance - maybe just an off
chance - that some well-meaning judge might accept the evidence pointing to the
massive failure of his constitutional duty to prevent the killings. What stands
between him and the clean chit are the courts and the cases Teesta is
pursuing.

Jaising emphasizes, “What
we are witnessing is the power of the state and its terrorising arm, the CBI,
to mount a raid on Teesta's home and office to prove that she misused foreign
funds versus the power of the courts to hold power to account. Who will win
this battle? It is the
courts of this country that are on trial, not Teesta”, Jaising concludes.

It very much looks that
in PM’s designs there is one law for the “non-profit” organizations and another
for “for-profit” corporates. Modi seems
to be utilising FCRA (Foreign Contributions Regulations Act) as a gateway to
crushing human rights, and what is worse, an alibi for an argument that the
NGOs who take up human right

[Goanet] Opening of Goan Institute Nairobi .

2015-08-04 Thread Mervyn Maciel
In the latest issue of the Kenya-published OLD AFRICA magazine(to which I
subscribe),
there is an interesting article on the opening of the Goan Institute
Nairobi by Mr. C.W. Hobley,
H.M. Assistant Deputy Commissioner on 8th December, 1906.
I'd just like to share a few extracts which might interest our readers:
Here's part of Hobley's speech:

...I am greatly struck by the enterprise of your community in building
such a fine edifice.
I am particularly appreciative of your efforts because I note that you have
had the good
sense to build in stone, and this shews me that you have faith in the
future of this
country. Optimism tempered by judgement is the only creed for this country,
and those
who do not believe this doctrine had better leave it at once...

(*wonder what he would have to say of Kenya today?)*
He goes on to praise the community etc etc, but there's one paragraph that
I found quite
interesting when he refers to management of the institute. Here goes...

I would like to add a word on the management of the institute and
recommend you to
always exercise great care in the selection of your committee. Elect the
best educated
and strongest men you can find and give them a free hand, and trust them to
keep up the
character of the establishment and support them in checking the exuberance
of unruly
members
  (*sound advice I must admit).*

Quite a lengthy and interesting article, but this will give you the gist.

The President of the Institute at the time was Mr. J.M. Campos

 Hi

UK - Breadline - Pets in England lose out on creative Goan Cooking.
An example of Cockroach Mentality and Self Enrichment amongst Clever Dickie
Goans in Breadline Britain (Courtesy of Goan Voice UK)

Front Page News
Report from Michael Benke  Swindon Advertiser / 05:00 Tuesday 4 August 2015
Quote

ALMOST half a tonne of food belonging to a Swindon caterer is to be destroyed
after he was caught taking a delivery of raw meat - from a pet food supplier.
Royly Da Silva, 37, of Salisbury Street is the owner of Royal Food, which
supplies Goan and Indian food to various events, including last year’s Swindon
Goan Festival.
During an investigation into the pet food company last week, Da Silva was
spotted buying the meat in unmarked bags from a truck which was not
refrigerated.
When questioned he confirmed all his meat was bought from the pet food supplier
but could not say exactly where the meat came from and there were no invoices.
Upon further investigation it was found he was storing food in a garage behind
Bright Street in a “disgraceful” condition, forcing environmental health
officers to seize 450 kilograms of food.
Swindon Borough Council therefore went before Swindon Magistrates’ Court on
Monday to request an emergency order, to have the food destroyed and prevent
him from using the garage.
Phil Wirth, speaking on behalf of the council, said: “During a joint operation
with the police involving a suspected pet food supplier delivering meat to
Swindon, Mr Da Silva was apprehended taking a delivery of raw meat from a pet
food supplier.
“The meat was being distributed in an unrefrigerated van which was used
predominantly for pet food delivery with no clear separation between the
products.
“There were sacks of meat which were being delivered as pet food with no
identifying marks and so could easily be confused with those sacks delivered as
food for human consumption.
“The van which the meat was delivered on was dirty and bags of meat were either
on the floor or in Dolavs [plastic boxes] which stored the pet food meat and
offal.”
The Royal Food catering company website boasts a five-star food hygiene rating,
which the company received on previous inspections.
However, Da Silva failed to disclose the separate garage where much of the food
was stored to the inspectors.
“The conditions found within what was actually a garage/lock up were
disgraceful,” said Mr Wirth.
“It was cluttered with old, filthy accumulations of old food containers,
littered with dust and cobwebs, food equipment including three upright
refrigerators which were turned off and a large circular barbecue grill which
[was] recognised from the Goan Festival 2014.
“The room was open at the far end and led to a garden/back yard so access by
pests could not be removed.”
Within the garage was a chest freezer packed with food, which Da Silva
confirmed was intended for use at an event in London due to be attended by up
to 15,000 people.
Mr Wirth said: “The freezer in which the food was stored was filthy, littered
with old food debris and congealed blood, there were dead flies lying in the
bottom.
“There were Goan sausages hanging in the lockup in a plastic bag and Royly Da
Silva was not clear about when and where these were prepared.”
Chairman of the bench, Helen Toomer, agreed with council and granted the
requests. Da Silva was present in court and representing himself but did not
speak to defend his case.

[Goanet] Mauvin Godinho to regularise all illegal constructions in Goa

Mauvin thinks that all Goans are illiterate Ghanttis.
Let him try regularise a single illegal house on Communidade Land.
He will be slapped with Contempt of Supreme Court's Order.
Communidade is Portuguese meaning of Community.
And Communidade land is Community land / village land.
Read para 22 of Supreme Court Order and Directives.

Regularizing illegal structures are mostly done in Goa. In fact, in future
people should start constructing illegal housing because it is certain
that one day whichever Govt comes in power, they will surely
regularize. This is not a Joke but it is a fact and it happens mostly only
in Goa.
This is a good opportunity for those appointed as PDA's Chairman.
IT SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. BUT WHAT TO DO. IT COULD BE VOTE BANK MISCHIEF.
IF IT IS ILLEGAL SHOULD NOT BE MADE LEGAL IN ANY FIELD.

VASCO: Dabolim MLA Mauvin Godinho, who was recently appointed chairman of
the sub-committee for regularization of illegal houses, slammed the
Congress for not understanding the need to resolve the issue of
regularizing houses on Comunidade land and keeping it hanging for many
 years.

He said the committee under his leadership was well-seized of the issue.
It would urgently formulate a policy and prepare a detailed roadmap, which
would be submitted to the Convener of the commission before the end of the
 assembly session.

“The post of chairman of the sub-committee is more important than the post
of SGPDA chairman simply because this is an issue that is hanging for
decades. People wanted resolutions and wanted the government to act either
way. As the revenue minister in 2000, I tried my best to regularise these
structures. However, an attorney of the communidade went to the court and
stalled the whole process. Thereafter nobody took interest, but I never
lost track of the issue. Finally I believe something is happening on this
 front,” said Godinho.

He continued, “Governments talk about empowering the common man, but fail
to understand that these people have been staying in those structures for
decades together with all amenities. Still the structures are called
illegal as they are not in the resident’s name. This is one step by which
the BJP government is trying to empower the common man. The Congress failed
to do it despite being in power for several years.”

Regarding the date by which the whole procedure for regularization of
structures should be completed, Godinho said, “I will submit an interim
report before the Assembly on how we can move forward in fulfilling the
promise made during the last assembly election. Without any doubt, before
the next assembly session, *99 percent of these illegal structures on
communidade land will be regularised. *

The communidades have lost all hope in getting back the encroached land,
and thus, regularisation is the only solution.”

Sorry to be the harbinger of such bad news this early in the morning... our
long-time friend and a very widely known figure in cyberspace, journalist
Joel D'Souza (69) passed away after a very brief illness at the District
Hospital, Mapusa. Joel was a journalist since the 1960s almost, worked for
a range of mastheads, and had so many interesting stories to narrate...

We were good friends and worked a lot together. He was extremely
productive. While also very low-profile and always excessively modest about
his work, he kept reporting, photographing, videographing, and editing on so
many Goa-related issues. To get him to talk about his experiences, you
needed to bait him with names of others!

Joel had a lot of unfinished work on hand... one is a (Romi
Konkani-English) dictionary he co-authored with Isidore Dantas, awaiting
publishing. Joel successfully made a shift-over to the online media, early
on, soon after it reached Goa in the 1990s. He had a long stint with GoaCom
and Goanet, send out news updates for perhaps a decade...

Just a few months back, we were sitting in a very noisy restaurant in
Porvorim, and I was coaxing him to write about his experiences in
journalism for a forthcoming book. As usual, he was reticent, almost
believing that he had nothing to talk about. But as he kept telling me one
fascinating story after another, I just could not resist and used the video
cam for note-taking. The resultant interviews are below...

(What was most surprising was when he told me his name wasn't actually
Joel... and brushed aside my curiosity. Just this morning, his good friend
Alexyz told me it was... Joseph!)

Joel, you did a great job in taking the story far and will, and in
documenting the Goa reality. Rather than mourning your death, we need to
celebrate the wealth of your work. Your contribution to the Romi Konkani
cause will also be long remembered. Needless to say, we will miss your
regular presence ... but there are a lot of happy memories that will live

[Goanet] GOANET: AN UNHOLY NEXUS?

2015-08-04 Thread Stephen Dias
Dear Aires,

Your news appears to be in the right direction that this chap Nilesh may
be under the guise of Subhakar Rao and could be compared to Louis Berger?
I have also got a smell that Nilesh Cabral is also trying to promote boat
cruises on tourism near Children Park area after getting rid of private
operators from Nikil boats and other boat operators.. This is food for
taught and needs to be investigated before an another Scam takes place.
People are working to help him and Alina bai is suffering for this move.
Captain of Ports it seems not cooperating with Nilesh Cabral?
If his move is in good intention than he needs to be given cooperation and
support from public.

The Crime Branch of the Goa Police needs to probe the nexus between
Chairman of the Goa Tourism Development Corporation MLA Nilesh Cabral and
the US fugitive Subhakar Rao who has slipped into Goa under the guise of
promoting Tourism. Is it another Louis Berger?

Re: [Goanet] [GOABOOKCLUB] Opening of Goan Institute Nairobi .

2015-08-04 Thread augusto pinto
Dear Mervyn,

Your letter was total gibberish to me until I read: The President of the
Institute at the time was Mr. J.M. Campos:

I happened to live until I was 9 years old at the junction of the
Campos-Ribeiro Avenue in a lodging that was above 'Hole in the Wall Bar'
owned and run by Mr V. C. Mascarenhas of Moira.

'Hole in the Wall Bar' is a wonderful name that harks back to the Goan
origins of the owners. Originally Oscar 'Boom' - the medical rep from Moira
with the magnificent house in Attafondem, who's family used to own that
bar.

Then when Oscar's father decided to leave Kenya he sold it to Mr V. C.
Mascarenhas whose house in Moira is just above the Gauri Apartments
building in Bambordem and now occupied by Ms Vera/Veronica Mascanenhas and
her husband, V.C.'s son, whose name I right now can't remember.

The reason why I said 'Hole in the Wall Bar' is a wonderful name is because
it harks back to the* 'gaddi'* of yore. The *'gaddi'* was the bar of olden
times in Goa. It was basically literally a Hole in the Wall. You had to put
your money through a hole in the wall and order what booze you wanted and
you would be given that booze through the hole.No bakwas, no BS, no
nothing. It was pure quid pro quo. Get your fix and scram!

No I don't want to go back to those times, which are like the simple bars
that you encounter in places outside Goa. I prefer to have my fixes in a
more susegado way. Don't you agree Balaji?

CHEERS!
Augusto

In the latest issue of the Kenya-published OLD AFRICA magazine(to which I
 subscribe),
there is an interesting article on the opening of the Goan Institute
 Nairobi by Mr. C.W. Hobley,
H.M. Assistant Deputy Commissioner on 8th December, 1906.
I'd just like to share a few extracts which might interest our readers:
 Here's part of Hobley's speech:

...I am greatly struck by the enterprise of your community in building
 such a fine edifice.
I am particularly appreciative of your efforts because I note that you
 have had the good
sense to build in stone, and this shews me that you have faith in the
 future of this
country. Optimism tempered by judgement is the only creed for this
 country, and those
who do not believe this doctrine had better leave it at once...

Elect the
 best educated
and strongest men you can find and give them a free hand, and trust them
 to keep up the
character of the establishment and support them in checking the exuberance
 of unruly
 members
   (*sound advice I must admit).*

Quite a lengthy and interesting article, but this will give you the gist.

The President of the Institute at the time was Mr. J.M. Campos
