Ponti, petromax, alladin what’s common??? - 2 respostas.
Mark Anthony De Souza - 22 de maio de 2009 - denunciar abuso

Yes, you guessed right. They are all sources that emitted light in the
pre-electricity Goan era.

Ponti (small lamp)
Made of recycled tin/small cans/bottles that consist of rope wick,
treaded through a wick holder, mounted on tin/bottle base that stored
kerosene as fuel. Lit at dusk and was turned off just before a tuck into
bed. Every house possessed at least a couple of them. You just couldn’t
do without one. It was such a companion for night strolls or getting to
clandestine meetings in the narrow vaddo lanes, spotting and way
stepping creepy creatures in the path. Who has not with ponti light,
said the rosary, played hide n seek, cards, musical instruments,
partied, listened to the radio or just snoozed? The fumes mixed with the
kerosene smell was an antidote to mosses, flying bites and sometimes a
throat or eye irritation. The wick needed a trim nearly every day and
refilling of kerosene on regular basis. This is the humble ponti that
often held sway till dawn.

Petromax (Max lite lamp)
The king of light accessories, was made of mix metal (iron/steel/brass)
cylindrical fuel base, with a small pressure pump and valve that
alternated as fuel injection point, an inverted bulb type netting wick,
a small spindle wheel for brightness adjustment, glass strips arranged
upright in circular fashion, a spirit holder below the wick with an
opening for pouring spirit or striking a safety match. The contraption
was complete with an open top that held the fuel supply lines, assisted
air circulation and finished with a metal handle that allowed it to be
strung, hooked or just mounted. Spirit was used to get it going. It
isn’t elegant in looks but did light up the place well with its whitish
glow. Unfortunately it was also the cause of many accidents and burns.
Toppling over, bursting due to pressure, catching fire in strong breeze,
and heat generation making it too hot to touch were some of the safety
hazards. You needed to cool it down before storing for the next use.

Ponti, petromax cont -1
Petromax was used by commercial establishments, churches, temples, big
houses, fetes and for cultural activities. Petromax light in odd places
and hours was a sure pointer that something was happening or going on
and was a guided beam to full moon parties, local festivals, dances,
Konkani plays and marriage functions.

Alladin (Glass Chimney lamp)
Here was a chrome finished closed chalice with a glass chimney mounted
on the top. Elegant looking and the queen of lighting accessories. The
netting wick was placed upright like a bulb. It like the petromax had a
valve pump, inlet cum pressure release. Expensive compared to the
petromax was seen only in well to do homes. It could be carried safely
from room to room and sometime was placed on ring mounts hoisted to the
roof beam. The light from the alladin was enchanting and soothing. Feni
/whiskey/syrups glasses in hand and village gossip/discussions normally
took place round an alladin.

*INDIAN U-19 TEAM GOES DOWN FIGHTING AGAINST PALESTINE *

*By Joseph Solomon,*

*AIFF Media Team*

*AL-RAM (PALESTINE):* The Indian U-19 National Team went down fighting 0-1
against hosts Palestine at the Faisal Al-Hussieni Stadium in Al-Ram,
Palestine in their opening match of the AFC U-19 Qualifiers on October 02,
2015.

A Mohammed Yousef goal in the 15th minute proved to be the difference
between the two sides and led Palestine to garner their first win of the
qualifying campaign.

Speaking in the official post match press conference, Head Coach of the
Indian U-19 National Team Lee Johnson said, “We lost the match because we
gave Palestine too much respect in the opening minutes of the first half
and that is when they punished us.”

“We were the better Team in the second half and I am proud of the Players
as they showed great character to get back in the game”.

“However in Football goals win you games it is as simple as that,” Lee
added.

Meanwhile, Head Coach of the Palestinian National Team, Ayman Sandouka
praised the charismatic never-say-die attitude of the Indian players and
said, “India were very hard to break down. They were making it very
difficult for us to keep possession and play our game”

On a relatively cool night in Al-Ram, the Indian colts showcased defensive
solidity as they thwarted their Palestinian opponents with composure and
organization for most of the match. However a moment of complacency allowed
the Palestinians to take the decisive lead against the run of play in the 15
th minute when Mohammed Yousef slotted home his chance, past a diving
Shivaji Patil.

Not the be deterred, the Indian colts jotted down their attacking
opportunities with sheer finesse and in the 22nd minute, Daniel’s shot was
saved by the Palestinian custodian after a tacky one-touch play around the
18 yard box.

With the 12th man - the fans – inhibiting an intimidating and electrifying
atmosphere through chants of their own, the Palestinian opponents started
to conduct raids on the Indian citadel, but to no avail.

Nishu Kumar’s radar disrupted as many as two Palestinian attacks, while
safeguarding the Indian defence. Both Teams cancelled each other out, as
they entwined in a raging battle for midfield and at half-time the Indian
colts trailed by a solitary goal against Palestine.

Changing over and the Indian contingent were straight out of their blocks
as they adopted an attacking stance. A glitzy move in the 48th minute which
saw Daniel onto goal was sweeped away by the Palestinian custodian.

Nine minutes later, Ming’s exquisite long defense piercing ball found
Rakesh Oram clear onto goal, but the latter was flagged offside. In the 79th
minute of the match Ming burst onto the left asphalt but and would’ve been
clear onto goal, had Palestine’s last defender not made an inch-perfect
tackle.

In an attempt to churn points from the match, the Indian colts attacked
all-out, but to no avail. And at the end of full-time the score-line read
1-0 in favor of the Palestinian National Team.

*India starting XI against Palestine:* Shivaji Patil (GK), Nishu Kumar,
Sarthak Golui, Amey Ranawade, Lalthakima (82’ – Vinit Rai), Lalramzuava,
Malsawmzuala, Rakesh Oram (88’ – Suman Sarkar), Daniel Lalhlimpuia (C),
Lallianzuala Chhangte (66’ – Milan Basumatary), Mawihmingthanga.

[Goanet] pao

2015-10-02 Thread Joao Barros-Pereira
The Great Powwow of Pao

Is the price of pao controlled in Goa by the government?

Whenever I'm in Goa I always make sure to get my share of pao. The only
problem is the great variety of other breads with its improving quality
available in the clean and more sophisticated stores in the towns. I don't
see pao sold in the modern stores. Why not? It is sold only on the streets
and in small shops.

Why can't the modern bread stores sell quality pao at a higher price? Is it
illegal? For five rupees in Goa today is it reasonable to expect to get a
quality pao? If we are going to improve and protect our traditional food
including pao we have to use better quality raw materials, and naturally
the retail price will go up. Otherwise the only intelligent option is for
traditional bakers to shrink the size of the loaf.

Goa is a popular tourism state and so we need to have two levels of food in
terms of quality and price to promote our traditional delicacies. Pao and
Special pao, sausages and Special sausages, and so on, so the hungry and
the connoisseur can both partake happily. Otherwise spurious products will
flood the market making crorepatis of crooked businessmen while our
traditional food which has been refined over the centuries will simply end
up in the gastronomic gutter.

[Goanet] UGF questions GCZMA’s intention in allowing WRD Projects sans norms

2015-10-02 Thread Avinash Tavares
UGF questions GCZMA’s intention in allowing WRD Projects sans norms
--
United Goans Foundation has questioned Goa coastal zone management
authority (GCZMA)’s wisdom in allowing projects of water resources
department (WRD) purely on the basis of ‘trust’.
Reacting to a news appearing in s section of the press that GCZMA
instead of insisting on stringent CRZ compliance asking WRD to
scrutinize flood protection projects including retaining walls along
river banks on its own, the UGF has questioned the competency of GCZMA
in ascertaining whether WRD will complying with CRZ Act, the
Foundations President Ashish Kamat compared this exercise to the
Police booking its own self in the Drug Mafia Police nexus of
yesteryears. “The GCZMA in its minutes of the 120th meeting has
actually said that Prior study such as environment impact assessment
(EIA) may be required in certain cases and hence the authority
directed WRD officials present to take note of the issues, including
the details of standard design and the material to be used (for
construction). Do they mean to say that the EIA for WRD projects is of
mutual convenience and can be waived off?”
Rubbishing the GCZMA’s sermon to WRD to use eco-friendly materials and
biological measures, UGF General Secretary Avinash Tavares questioned
GCZMA’s own competency to judge (i) whether it had the rightfully
qualified personnel to decide if WRD officials were competent to
handle CRZ sensitivities and (ii) WRD with its own record of
disastrous projects in the past had the scientific depth to decide
about ecofriendly measures that could be CRZ compliant. “UGF recently
through an RTI came to know that of the 7 Scientific Assistants, six
are specialised in chemistry and just one in Botany. They do not have
anyone who is specialised in subjects related to Coastal Management
such as Sea Sciences, Meteorology, Oceanography, Geophysics, or Marine
and Coastal Management. They have absolutely no understanding problems
in the rivers and coastal zone and the multidisciplinary aspects of
Coastal Zone Management, which is vital for sustainable development.
Even worse, all the employees of GCZMA are hired on Contract basis
which implies that none of them can be held accountable for any
misconduct, malpractice and negligence”, says Tavares raising serious
queries on the manner in which GCZMA literally served the permission
for projects to WRD.
It may be recalled that Goa’s WRD has a notorious history of failed
measures to contain sea flood erosion that were not just
environmentally dangerous but also unscientific. It was Water
Resources Department’s Geotube Experiment on Candolim Beach that led
to the loss of Rs 6 crores yet it failed to control sea erosion. The
concrete tetrapods on Keri Beach has also failed largely to arrest sea
erosion in Keri despite being replaced year after year. “The minutes
of the meeting seem more like a routine exercise to clear the
commissions and omissions of one Government Department by another”,
points UGF’s Kamat.

[Goanet] Our music, our story (Judy Luis-Watson)

2015-10-02 Thread Goanet Reader
BOOK EXCERPT: OUR MUSIC, OUR STORY...
Waiting for the Sunrise: Goan Jazz Musicians in Dar es Salaam

Waiting for the Sunrise by Judy Luis-Watson is now
available at http://bit.ly/wfts-judy (in both print
and ebook versions). Details from jazzgoan...@gmail.com

PRELUDE

The impressions we pick up as children,
when our minds are still open to influence
and as soft as damp sponges,
are likely to stay with us the longest.
   --- Ann Patchet

When the Jazz Swingers were at the top of their game in Dar
es Salaam, I was just a young child. Yet I have clear
memories of their band practices at our home and gigs at the
Goan Institute (G.I.), a private club where Goans and their
guests could socialize.

This band story is a result of a question that kept
playing in my mind when music was my profession.
Strangers in the U.S. often asked after a
performance how I learned to play the blues. What I
think they were really asking was how someone who
looked like me could be so immersed in music that
originated in African American culture. The answer,
however, seemed clear -- I fell in love with the
deep sound of blues music as well as the clever
story-telling and double entendre lyrics. As for
jazz, I felt at home with it because swing music
was the live and very real soundtrack of my early
  childhood.

That recurring question, however, became the
catalyst to delve into my family's musical roots. How did
my dad Jerry Luis, born in Tanganyika and of Goan
ancestry, learn the wide range of music he played? And
what about the Jazz Swingers, the band he played with
in Dar es Salaam?

The Jazz Swingers were the first Goan swing band in Dar es
Salaam (Arabic for Harbor of Peace), the capital city of
Tanganyika. Beginning in 1947 and through the mid-'60s, these
musicians of Goan heritage entertained thousands with
American swing jazz as well as dance music from Cuba, South
America, and Europe.

At every occasion, the Jazz Swingers opened and
closed with an instrumental version of 'The World
is Waiting for the Sunrise,' a hopeful tune born in
Toronto, Canada, following the devastation of World
War I. They became twinned with the song,
especially in the hearts of their Goan audiences.

It's been a fascinating journey to learn about these
musicians, why they left their ancestral home, and how they
contributed to the music scene in Dar. My safari began in an
unlikely place, but perhaps it was precisely the right time.

In Toronto, on September 26, 1999, a long line of relatives
and friends waited to offer condolences to my parents at the
wake for my brother Ian. I would rather have been sitting
quietly somewhere, but I mustered up the courage to talk with
people I didn’t really know or hadn't seen for years. One
person was John Nazareth, who had served as the President of
the Goan Overseas Association in Toronto. At some point I
asked what he thought of the idea for this band story, and he
responded that people (at least Goans) would be interested in
it. When I mentioned his brother Peter and how much I enjoyed
his novels and the compilation he edited on Goan literature,
John suggested I call Peter, who lived in Iowa City.

In the meantime, my dad Jerry arranged for us to meet with
several former members of the Jazz Swingers who lived in
Toronto. Follow-up conversations with musicians as well as
other members of the international Goan community helped to
unpack the story. My intention is to provide a window through
music into the Goan experience in Dar; acknowledge the role
these musicians played in their community; and share a
picture of the times in which they lived. As much as this
project is a slice of my family history, it is also a piece
of the Goan, Indian, and Tanzanian story.

[Goanet] Bishop Ferdinand Fonseca dies

2015-10-02 Thread Goa's premiere mailing list, estb. 1994!
Bishop Ferdinand Fonseca dies
Published on: 5:23 pm, October 2, 2015 Story By: mattersindia.com

Mumbai: Bombay archdiocese’s retired Auxiliary Bishop Ferdinand Joseph
Fonseca died on October 2. He would have completed 90 on December 2.

“Bishop Ferdie, as he was fondly called, had suffered a heart attack a few
days ago. The end came around 3:45am at Holy Family hospital in Bandra. His
last rites will be held at 4 pm Saturday at St Andrew’s Church in Bandra,”
said Fr Nigel Barrett, spokesman for the archdiocese of Bombay.

The prelate was born to Jose and Julia Fonseca, Goan settlers in Umerkhadi,
Mumbai, in 1925, then known as Bombay. He completed his matriculation from
St.Joseph’s High School, Umerkhadi, in 1942 and Bachelor of Arts from St.
Xavier’s College, Bombay. He passed with honors in Latin in 1946.

He joined the Bombay archdiocesan seminary in Parel in 1946, a year before
India’s Independence.

He was ordained a priest on December 5, 1954. He then completed Bachelor of
Education and served as assistant parish priest in four parishes and
principal of attached high schools — St Francis Xavier (Vile Parle), Sacred
Heart (Santa Cruz), Our Lady of Victories (Mahim), and Our Lady of Glory
(Byculla).

He held many other responsible roles such as director of the Sodality, the
Legion of Mary and Alcoholics Anonymous at various times, a press release
from Bombay archdiocese said.

In 1972, he was sent to study a course in Spirituality and Counseling at
the Gregorian in Rome and at Loyola University, Chicago. He was appointed
the rector of St.Pius X College, Goregaon, the archdiocesan seminary when
the Church was undergoing revolutionary changes in the wake of Vatican II.

He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Bombay in 1980. He chose Our Lady of
Victories Church as the venue of his Episcopal ordination because of his
devotion to Our Lady. He retired in 2000.

Bishop Fonseca lived in a retirement home for priests in Bandra. He had
once said, “I couldn’t believe that God had chosen me, Ferdie, when He
could have chosen anyone else.” He had told priests in their twilight
years, “As one grows older and older, remember, you are going closer and
closer to the one who will be in your heart forever.”

[Goanet] Antonio Costa: A Goan Prime Minister for Portugal? (Times of India)

2015-10-02 Thread V M
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Antnio-Costa-A-Goan-prime-minister-for-Portugal/articleshow/49200092.cms

There will be fingers crossed on these distant shores on Sunday,
October 4, when elections are held for all 230 seats in the Portuguese
parliament, the Assembleia da Republica.

Pedro Passos Coelho's ruling centre-right coalition faces a powerful
challenge that has been brewing for years from Antonio Costa, the
popular and charismatic three-term mayor of Lisbon, of the Socialist
Party. In the balance is Konkani history. The result could be the
first Goan head of state.

Costa is the 54-year-old son of the ferociously anti-colonial writer,
the late Orlando da Costa, whose classic 'O Signo da Ira' is set in
the Margao neighborhoods he grew up in the 1930s and 40s. Later, when
studying in Portugal, the senior Costa became a staunch opponent of
the Salazar dictatorship, member of the (then outlawed) Communist
Party, and a well-known Lisbon intellectual who retained life-long
affection and connection to his ancestral Goa.

His son is a political prodigy. Antonio Luis dos Santos da Costa has
been Portugal's minister of parliamentary affairs, minister of
justice, and minister of internal administration. He headed his
party's list for the 2004 European elections then served on the
committee on civil liberties, justice and home affairs, before
becoming one of just 14 vice-presidents of the European Parliament.

In 2007, Costa gambled big. He ran for Lord Mayor of Lisbon, the
troubled centerpiece of an urban area where nearly 30% of Portugal's
population lives. After winning, he immediately moved his office to
Mouraria, a notoriously crime-infested locality, where he started
getting rid of the drug-peddling and prostitution that used to
flourish all around. Similar efforts steadily extended city-wide.

Despite the prevailing wrenching national economic crisis, Lisbon has
transformed: it is now the safest, cleanest, greenest, and most
livable big city in Europe. Its mayor has been re-elected three times.

When Costa won the right to lead his Socialist Party in September
2014, it seemed certain he would sweep to power in the 2015 elections.
But despite the prime ministerial candidate's overwhelming personal
popularity, things have not quite turned out that way.

One big reason is what happened in Greece. Like other recent European
elections, Sunday's referendum revolves around so-called "austerity".
But unlike Greece—where the electorate rebelled against economic
adjustment being forced on the country by the reviled "troika" of
lenders (the European Commission, European Central Bank, and
International Monetary Fund)—Portugal has already undergone three
years of punishing austerity, and emerged to "say goodbye" to the
measures.

A few days ago, the country's credit rating was upgraded just below
investment grade, an achievement the ruling party is using to deflect
criticism about the ongoing recession, record unemployment, and an
extraordinary wave of emigration.

That last factor is also playing against Costa. Portugal is rapidly
emptying of young voters who are his support base. Hundreds of
thousands of under-30s have migrated since the financial crisis became
entrenched. It's a crisis for the country, which could lose two
million people in a few decades, but it is also a crisis for Costa.
Almost all of those votes would have gone to him, and now almost none
will. In the last election, just 20% of Portuguese living abroad cast
absentee ballots.

Even if polls show the incumbents leading, don't make the mistake of
betting against Costa. In the campaign's last debate, he nimbly forced
Passos Coelho on the defensive to win the day. "Over the past four
years, the country has reverted 13 years," said Costa, who (while
lacking the handlebar moustache) increasingly resembles his father. He
said, scornfully, "The government has created a lot of jobs for
nurses, but they are in the UK not Portugal."

When this writer encountered Costa in a Lisbon museum in 2014, he
spontaneously invited me to the stunning 19th century City Hall, where
grand portraits of his predecessors looked down upon us. We sat next
to each other on a sofa, and the mayor gently asked typical Goan
questions about which village I came from, while telling me about his
family in Margao. Then he shared with me his dreams about developing
much stronger connections between Europe and India, with Goa and
Portugal bridging the two great entities.

His eyes were shining with excitement. I allowed myself to dream about
a newly-elected Costa making his first official trip to India, even
all the way to Goa. Orlando da Costa of Margao's son, now the prime
minister of Portugal. That improbable, unbelievable twist of fate
could be just around the corner.
