[Goanet] Salaam – MondayMuse (7 Mar’16)
MONDAY MUSE (7 March 2016) SALAAM Tiffany Wayne has described her as ‘one of the first-generation modern Indian feminists, and an important contributor to world feminism in general, as she was both addressing and challenging not simply the question of gender in isolation but also issues related to caste and casteist patriarchy.’ Savitribai Phule was modern India’s first woman teacher, a promoter of education, a champion of dignity for women and a progressive poet. There are many of us, who are oblivious about the inspirational life and struggle of Savitribai. But if we knew we would surely salute her work, saying ‘Salaam’ (salutations). Interestingly, Savitribai’s death anniversary falls on 10 March which coincides with the birth anniversary of the popular Marathi poet-lyricist Mangesh Padgaokar who passed away on 30 December last year. He wrote a long poem ‘Salaam’ that mocks the attitude of saluting the powers-that-be or saluting mediocrity and conformity. It is said so well that ‘if you do not stand up for something… you will fall for anything!’. The quote can be tweaked to say, ‘If you do not salute the worthy, you will be worshipping the unworthy.’ It is important to identify, understand and align with the right inspiration and emulate the right example. Otherwise we will be saluting the wrong ones and getting the wrong influence! Say Salaam to the progressive… Lest we salute the regressive! - Pravin K. Sabnis Goa based facilitator-trainer; Pravin Sabnis has been writing MONDAY MUSE since the first Monday of 2004.

--ALL --PARKS IN GOA ARE NEGLECTED AND MUST BE INSPECTED BY THE GOA STATE COMMISSION OF CHILD RIGHTS. THIS CARANZALEM PARK WHICH I GO FOR DAILY -WALK IS IN BAD CONDITION AND THE PLANTS ARE DYING AND THE GARDEN IS NEVER TAKEN CARE. I CALL THIS GARDEN AS BABUSH MONSERRRATE GARDEN WHO HAS ALSO NEGLECTED SINCE HE IS FROM TALEIIGAO AND HIS WIFE IS A MLA MUST BE ASKED TO TAKE CARE OF THIS GARDEN AND HE IS THE WINNING CANDIDATE FOR CCP ELECTION NOW, AND WILL HAVE MORE POWERS TO BRING PANJIM UP . HERALD MUST BE CONGRATULATED FOR THEIR REPORT. STEPHEN DIAS DONA PAULA--- *GSCPCR seeks survey of parks for kids, elders* Team Herald PANJIM: Taking serious cognizance of the dilapidated condition of parks for children and senior citizens, Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has asked the Directorates of Panchayats and Municipal Administration to conduct a survey of the parks and submit a report. The commission has identified two parks in the capital – Caranzalem children’s park and senior citizens park at Campal – as the most neglected urging the local administration to take up upgradation work urgently. “ On receipt of reports and complaints from citizens, we have written to the two departments seeking a report based on the questionnaire raised by us about the condition of the parks in their respective jurisdiction. We are awaiting a reply,” the commission’s chairperson Dr Sushma Kirtani said. The commission also moved the CCP for urgent repairs of the poor state of the Caranzalem and Campal parks. “ The senior citizens park has corroded and broken railings, posing a serious health hazard,” the commission noted alleging that government authorities have treated the issue casually.

Fr Conceicao de Silva has blessed this project and must be questioned why he did it without taking the villagers in confidence. I have questioned Fr. Conceicao in the next day at his cabin of Taleigao Church who is presently is a Parish Priest and told him that he was wrong. He could have suggested taking a Hindu and local Catholic priest instead of him going all the way from Taleigao. Why he had to go there from Taleigao with the blessed water and was dropped back with the same car? That means Fr. Silva had some personal interest. He said there will not be any disturbance nor any sound pollution because the Helicopter takes off vertically and not run towards the village area at low level I have told him that once this activity starts than these rides will have no control and nothing will be able to do by the people of the village later, it is better to stop right now because there is no necessity for these rides for the villagers but it is only an advantage for the tourists and VIP persons to travel from different places from Goa to this Star Hotel Hyath. The rides will start from this Hotel to Panjim another their Hotel Hyatt at Bambolim and later all other Hotels in Goa and politicians will have joy rides from Pernem Mopa to everywhere in Goa. Perhaps Alina also has her blessing and given clearance from her side. for this project. [Goanet] STUDENT ACTIVISM
GL response: It is extremely disheartening to read the following post for someone from whom I would expect better. Do students go to college to learn and graduate with high skills or to be involved in political activism and a wasted career other than end being a blue collar worker or at best a labor leader? I wonder if this is the advice the respected advocate would give his own children? The job of cleaning up the "rampant corruption and bad Governance" lies with the legal profession and those who vote. I would suggest the advocate (long with like minded colleagues) go on a hunger strike to demand reform and change. A better and democratic way would of course be of them to run for political office. It is much easier to be critical, negative, demonize and destroy than work cooperatively to grow and build. He is a motto - BE THE CHANGE ONE IS SEEKING. Regards, GL From: Aires Rodrigues, Advocate High Court STUDENT ACTIVISM IN GOA NEEDS TO BE REKINDLED Student activism encompasses student involvement in issues dealing with economic, environmental, political and social change on and off the campus. it is extremely anguishing and very disheartening that the student activism today is virtually nonexistent in the State. In our days students were known for having strong opinions and expressing them without fear. We demonstrated to the government that student power was a force to reckon with. Maybe, it is now time that the students in Goa find their voice once again. Today the social media is a very handy tool to expand the scope and strength of student activism. Students need to be the voice of the voiceless and through a well organized networked Student activism it must be a signal for democracy and justice. With Goa currently in dire straits soaked in rampant corruption and bad Governance, the Student activism could cause a political, environmental, economic and much needed social change that Goa so desperately requires.

Any goa-related search whether a political meeting, social event, feast, funeral or indeed anything of interest to viewers on You Tube will result almost all the time in display of a work product of JGUK. It boggles the mind to imagine the logistics, effort and expense needed to achieve this. Therefore it would be no exaggeration to call JGUK 'Goa's wandering historian'. In any other country he would have been celebrated, quoted and his work depicted. Perhaps even a Doctorate from a University. In Goa his efforts are merely tools for mean opportunists wanting something for nothing. No wonder his frustration at not even an attribution. Part of that may be due to JGUK himself. His extreme paranoia in remaining anonymous perhaps gives those misusing his work the feeling that they are not offending a living, breathing person. Whatever the case may be, we on Goanet appreciate his work deeply and thank him for giving us insight into Goa today. Roland Francis Toronto

[Goanet] Political site at Cafe Bhonsule Panjim
Most of these great politicians, Ministers, leaders of social media, President and Executive members of Panjim Clubs, Doctors, Professors, Scientists, Engineers, Advocates, NRI Commissioner, including Editors, journalists, reporters and others well known figures etc prefers to assemble just outside the Cafe Bhonsule Panjim for gossiping and discussing political matters. This appears to be a centre of attraction. Just recently before the closure of CCP ELECTIONS our Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar I was told he too appeared at this spot. I have not seen so far our CM Laxmikant Parsekar. What a beautiful site for Panjimites to meet everybody there. Some party panels could have suggested this area and developed with benches to sit down for discussion and may be shown in their manifesto to gain some votes. It is pity that Garcia de Orta garden is abandoned due to stinking smell of garbage, remains of festivals, left over food, smell of vomit etc but I only see some senior citizens sitting on these broken benches. May be next forthcoming assembly election a decision can be made for a better area or a bigger place in Panjim, and Panjim Garden is made to develop of high standard with strict rules.
