'Loretta' takes cue from 200-year-old Goan 'tiatr'

TNN | May 26, 2016, 12.19 AM IST

New Delhi: The journey of tiatr began when a Goan landed in Mumbai in
the late 1800s to find a better job. An Italian travelling theatre
company hired him and they travelled around India presenting many
shows. When the company had to head back to Italy, this Goan was
entrusted with a box of the costumes used during the performances.
Inspired, he returned to Goa and created tiatr, the highly popular
genre of the Goan theatre.

Over 200 years, the genre has taken many shapes, addressed many more
issues and consistently been a voice of the people. Sunil Shanbag, a
director-playwright from Mumbai, is geared up to stage Loretta-in
Mumbai and Delhi-that is inspired by the essence of tiatr. Loretta is
the second of the five productions being staged under the Aadyam
banner this year.

Shanbag aims to recreate the Goan genre in its geographical and social
context while giving the audiences a heady dose of comedy. " Loretta
addresses substantial cultural issues with the help of distinctive
features of the genre. It will see familial and social issues being
dealt with in a manner that's typical of tiatr."

Widower Antonio Piedade Moraes, a landlord in Goa in the 70s and a
votary of the Konkani language, is protective of his island. His son
Rafael, who returns from Mumbai with his Anglo-Indian girlfriend
Loretta after completing his education, doesn't quite share his
father's love but Loretta's strong need for roots makes her relate to
Antonio. The play reaches an amiable conclusion, and in the process,
the characters undergo transformation.

Shanbag added, "The simplicity of the genre is deceptive. The
narratives may be straight and the characters may grow in an
uncomplicated way, but the issues that are dealt with often have so
many layers. Loretta shares these similarities with a typical tiatr
performance and it is my contemporary, urbane interpretation of the
genre."

Apart from music, among the unique characteristics of the genre are
the side shows that happen at the front portion of the stage,
traditionally giving those backstage some extra time. "The side shows
were message-laden in the guise of being distractions. Seen in the
context of their time, they were the space where sometimes caustic
comments and scathing sarcasm on institutions and positions of
authority in society and politics were made," said Shanbag.

Correction: this is the way the media you read (or listen to) told you the
world was. On Friday, May 27.

Today, competitive pressures, the tabloidisation of news and the closing
down of newspapers specially in the West (among other factors) are pushing
the media to focus on the bizarre. If they told you about the perfectly
normal people leading perfectly normal lives across the planet, that would
be boring, right?

[Goanet] Nehru's death anniversary

2016-05-27 Thread Eugene Correia
Nehru, the Liberator
Remembering Nehru as the Liberator of Goa from Portuguese rule. I remember
that fateful day. I was in Goa for the summer holidays when news came
flashing on the radio. On my way from Bogmalo to Vasco, I think I saw the
Indian tricolour flying half-mast. As all politicians have their faults,
like us all, Nehru had his too. However, it is ridiculous to blame him for
Goa's freedom, as he was under pressure not only from defence minister
Krishna Menon but the many Goan organizations working for the Liberation of
Goa to take military action. Portuguese had ignored repeated requests to
leave Goa peacefully.
In the pro-Portuguese website, Niz Goenkar, A. Veronica Fernandes, under
heading Nehru Were Cheated by Nehru, that the PM didn't fulfill his
promise. The quote attributed to Nehru is not dated but said, "Somewhere in
mid fifties, speaking in the Parliament, Premier Nehru said..."
In his newest article on NG, Veronica has blamed Portugal for Goa's woes.
Blame the past and present political masters, but largely the blame rest on
Goans for what Goa has become.
As for history, I don't give a dime to Veronica's knowledge. I have seen
him as a player for the Sesa Goa football team. I believe he was activist
for Konkani in Kuwait, now settled down in Goa.
Whether Goans should have been given referendum or not is a political
matter. Yes, legally the Supreme Court said it was "annexation".
Unfortunately, Nehru died just two years after the Liberation. If Goa had a
referendum and if Goa had been a new country, would it make much of a
different? Goans would rule Goa, just as it is been done today. Would the
result be different, politically?
Goa was a part of India. India, as many ignorant Goans believe, did come
after the British left. It wasn't united but divided into many kingdoms.
The unification of India, was like many other nations, even the US and
Canada.
As one Jack said on NG that "The root cause of Goa gone to dogs its is
Goans selling for hafty price their land, houses and even childrens for
Indian dogs."
For Mathew Fernandes said that "Jack will be none other than Urine Korea."
(That's the nickname NG has given me). This Mathew has said many things
against me in an earlier post on the Konkani Tiatr and Tiarist FB page. He
is one of the many supporters of Goa Su-Raj Party, who has a big presence
on Niz Goenkar, a site that allows use of foul language.
Moving forward is the only option to Goans now and not harking back to old
days. History cannot be undone, but Goa make itself proud again within the
Indian framework.
Special Status is another issue, and those who want to know why Goa doesn't
qualify must do some reading on Indian constitutional history and politics.
Even Floriano is rubbing the Special Status issue. Even Goans in Goa are
not united in fighting for this cause, as there are two groups. One of them
is sort of aligned to GSRP and the other is loyal to Alina Saldanha.
Floriano pet peeve is "ajeeb Goans". May I ask him in what context Nehru
said that Goans were "ajeeb." DId Nehru mean we Goans are "strange" or we
Goans are "different"?
To the best of my knowledge he was basing his words on the knowledge that
Goans had a 'syncretic" culture, both Portuguese and Indian. Just like
Pondicherry (now Puducherry), where there are still traces of French.
Here is Jack's post on the same FB page:

Jack

It's better not to twist things to serve one's political goals. If Goans
feel they should vote GSRP to 'save" Goa, so be it. That's the way
democracy works. There could be no Delhi-based "high commad" for GSRP, but
the commander-in-chief sits in Moira.

[Goanet] Families fighting back over alcoholism, says new book

2016-05-27 Thread Goanet News
Alcoholism not only affects persons suffering from it, but throws entire
families off guard -- socially, emotionally and financially. But the good
news is that families are fighting back and 'living again', says a new book
on the subject.

Freelance journalist Maria Viency Cardozo of Raia, Salcete, says there is a
need for new understandings into both the life of an alcoholic and "his
(or, occasionally, her) family".

Her book 'Diamonds Under My Feet', to be released on Saturday May 28, 2016 at
4.45 pm, at the Ravindra Bhavan Margao, focuses on stories of families that
have been battling alcoholism both in Goa and elsewhere.

She talks to wives, widows, children and even a husband of people suffering
from alcoholism, and how they managed to cope with the little spoken about
disease. Her 144-page book takes the story to Raia, Morjim, Fatorda,
Miramar, Gogol, Campal, Porvorim, Nuvem, Mangalore, Lucknow, Loutolim,
Shiroda, Rawanfond, Bangalore and elsewhere.

Some in the book believe they benefitted from groups like Al Anon and
Alateen, which work to helps the families and teenage children of
alcoholics respectively.

Among the methods referred to are the Twelve Step programme for recovery
from addiction, compulsion or behavioural problems. The process revolves
around admitting that one cannot control one's alcoholism or addiction,
recognising a Higher Power that can give strength, examining past errors,
making amends, learning to live a new life with a new code, and helping
others cope.

The book priced at Rs 200 is published by Goa,1556 in association with
Golden Heart Emporium (Margao) and Saturday's release function is open to
the public.

[Goanet] Redevelopment Alert! How Builders make Bakras of Flat-owners

2016-05-27 Thread Robin Viegas
From: b sabha

From: G R Vora mailto:grvo...@gmail.com>>

25.5.2016

Dear all,
As per your request I am forwarding the article by housing activist - Mr
Krishnaraj Rao, on how builders cheat flat owners while redeveloping their
buildings.

Please read the trailing mail.

Regards.

G R Vora
Cell: 09869195785

From: Krishnaraj Rao mailto:sahasipadya...@gmail.com>>

Mumbai, 25th May, 2016: While we are sitting in the comfort of our homes, an
unfolding tragedy is transforming proud flat-owners into paupers and destitutes
who will die in tiny rented homes, senior citizens homes or in the houses of
their children, and the memories of the flats that they once owned will be
cremated with them. In the name of redevelopment, millions of flat owners are
being led like sheep to the slaughter – not only humble salaried workers,
unthinking housewives, aged pensioners, over-dependent widows, but also
doctors, lawyers, CAs, MBAs, MNC executives, bureaucrats, businessmen,
tech-savvy housewives and career-women. Cooperative housing societies are full
of financial illiteracy, ignorance of ground realities, overconfidence and
gullibility. The redevelopment mantra of cooperative housing societies is: "jo
sabka hoga, woh hamara hoga, bharosa rakho" i.e. "What happens to others will
happen to us, so have faith."

A few thousand builders with names like "Shah Group of Builders", Kamala Group,
etc, exploit these millions of bakras to build up their fortunes. In the
building industry, "group" does not mean a company and its subsidiaries, it
just just means a motley bunch of builders temporarily collaborating to hunt
down a society of flat-owners like a pack of hungry wolves surrounding a flock
sheep.

>From the point-of-view of a builder, redevelopment is like hunting or trapping
>sheep. Every builder actually thinks in terms of taking over or "acquiring" a
>society and its assets. (Indeed, there are estate agents who specialize in
>"society-acquisition" i.e. bundling up the society-members in agreements, and
>transferring it to the highest-bidding builder.)

Please remember, redevelopment is basically a cooperative housing society
(owner and possesser of the land and building) giving a civil contract to
demolish their old building and reconstruct a new one while utilizing extra FSI
and TDR. Since housing societies can't afford to pay the contractor, they give
him permission to construct extra flats and sell them to make a profit.

Yes, these contractors need to draw up architectural plans and get dozens of
permissions and clearances from the civic authorities, and also mobilize
multi-crores of project finance. Because of the lengthy, weighty and complex
nature of this relationship, societies enter into lengthy contracts called
Letter Of Intent (LOI), Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU), Development
Agreement, Alternative Accommodation Agreement (also known as Individual
Agreement or Tripartite Agreement), "Irrevocable Consent", Power Of Attorney
(POA) etc.

BEWARE, MISCHIEF IS IN THE CONTRACT DOCUMENTS

These contract documents are typically drafted by lawyers paid by the
contractor/builder. By the wordings of the various documents, the nature of the
actual contract (i.e. the contract of a property-owner with a civil contractor)
is distorted. What emerges from the clever wordings is a different sort of
contract, wherein the civil contractor appears like an equal party with the
society, and not a mere contractor. The wordings make the builder seem like a
purchaser or owner of the premises, to whom the society hands over all control.
Words and clauses are included to endow the "builder" with all sorts of rights
and entitlements over the property, stripping the housing society and the
flat-owners of all their legal rights, including the right to revoke the
contract if the builder fails to perform his contractual obligations.
Unfortunately, almost all the society members sign on these papers without
reading and understanding the implications; and the few who protest are also
eventually forced to sign by the sheepish majority.

After this paperwork is stamped and registered, the flat-owners come to believe
that the builder is now the whole-and-sole owner and possessor of their
property. So, society members and office-bearers start thinking of their
redevelopment contractor as a "dhani", "mai-baap", benefactor and an absolute
owner and possessor of the plot and building. People lose all sense of control
over the society and its property, which is actually their collective property.

Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer start behaving like the builder is an
all-knowing, all-powerful god who can do no wrong. Anybody who criticizes or
questions the builder's competence or intention is treated as a public enemy;
the entire society gangs up and socially boycotts them.

Flat-owners are hypnotized into believing that they have got an "exchange
offer" from the po

Guwahati:

The Salesians in Assam prayed for their former student and Assam's new Chief
Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, on the eve of his oath taking as the 14th Chief
Minister of Assam heading the BJP-AGP-BPF coalition government.

After the prayers, Guwahati Salesian Provincial Fr. V M Thomas said, "This is a
historic moment for the state and the Salesian family when one of our own
illustrious alumni is taking the reins of the state".

"Don Bosco is the reason we are here," he told the members of the Salesian
Family which has more than 30 constituent bodies all over the world.

Fr. Thomas also added that three Sonowal brothers had studied at Don Bosco
School, Dibrugarh and that the school had waived the fees for one of the
brothers and educated him free.

Fr. Thomas recalled Sonowal addressing some 60 leaders of the province during
their provincial chapter on February 20 last where he spoke about the moral
values he had learnt at school.

"I have become what I am because of the education I received at Don Bosco," the
provincial quoted him as saying in the meeting.

Fr. Thomas said he has confidence that Sonowal will build "a civilisation of
love, peace and justice ushering in a new era of hope and development for the
aspiring youth."

Salesian Sister Grace, superior of St Mary's Guwahati, recalled that Sonowal as
the MP of Dibrugarh frequently helped their Little Flower School in Dibrugarh,
the release said.

The prayer meet at the Salesian Provincial House was attended by some 80
Salesian priests and brothers, sisters, alumni office bearers and Salesian
cooperators.

way the politics survives, The BJp/NDA are resting on the pedestal created
by the previous party. The trends in Indian politics have demonstrated that
the idea of permanent place in politics is farfetched. In Delhi AAP, a new
party has obliterated both the Congress and BJP, in fact mauled, decimated
them very badly. In Kolkata, Tamilnadu, and Kerela the major parties
fortune are on decline. The BJP/NDA is under illusion that aspires for pan
India foot prints like before and it is not going to happen anymore with
the rise of local, regional parties, which is the flavor of times .The
BJP/NDA has won the majority in Lok sabha elections on a diet of speeches,
promises, slogans, which are wearing out. The ruling party is going lock,
stock and barrel to demolish Congress party, specially the leadership of
Sonia and Raul, smarting under the assumption that they will have a free
run in the absence of leaderless Congress .The demise of National parties,
as a monolith is already evident in some states. BJP forgets that itself is
sheltering under one leader of Narendra Modi. There is no other leader in
BJP who can assume the mantle of this charismatic individual or appear of
even coming close to him. The regional parties are a force to be reckoned
with and only broad Based alliances can be a hope of retaining power base
in future, The NDA with uncharacteristic coalition in Kashmir is an example
of strange bedfellows coming to gether to share power in an unholy alliance
of convenience. Like the Congress the BJP is also experimenting with
defections to capture power by the back door. The results in Bihar by
mahaghatbandan has shown the BJP about its arrogance and drunk on majority
in Lokh Sabha, as a permanent flag or badge to display

The electorate day in and day out is fed up with BJP and Congress resorting
to blame game at every point, as if that is the cause of political
paralysis, The ruling parties are using the state machinery to silence and
coerce the opposition parties into meek submission The energies and
strategies are used to show the opposition in bad light ,as if to explain
their inability towards growth and development

The religious, food, National and patriotic intolerance is a regressive
approach, as constructive energies are frittered away on non issues. The
idea of secularism is subjected to subjective interpretation

Look at the massive price rise across the board on all commodities that is
burdening the Nation, but there is no debate about the control or about
mechanisms to check the spiral. It is not a priority for any party.
Everything seems to be normal about the crushing effect on average citizen
.Parties are securing win by offering goodies that are a burden on every
citizen ,pandering to a few, to control power. These popular gimmicks are
eating into the vitals of economy. The trouble with India since
independence has been overdependence on National monolithic parties, which
must change and it has happened in recent electoral outcomes

Both BJP and Congress must realize their utopian dreams of all India
presence is a myth not sustainable for too long The change of parties at
very elections alone will ensure accountability, The progress, reforms,
growth, development are not parameters to continue with another term

I am now slowly building up a view on the history of tourism in Goa,

Renewed interest for the latter (the 'advanced zombie stage' ;-) was

Hello there.

I've recently red a very interesting book related to the first Goa
hippies : "Eight finger Eddie : the hippie history of Goa and
Kathmandu" by "Earthman", (Copyright ? 2015 Earthman All rights
reserved. ISBN: 1517634423 ISBN 13: 9781517634421). A former 1970s
hippie himself, "Earthman" wrote a kind of biography of "Eight Finger
Eddie", an American hippie who landed in Goa on 1964 and became a kind
of guru for dozens of followers... On 2008, Earthman interviewed
"Eight Finger Eddie" who was still living modestly in Anjuna beach (at
Joe Banana's) where he finally died during the winter 2008-09, aged
83... It's really a fascinating book which describes how these strange
Westerners mingled (or sometimes not) with locals, renting beach
houses or sometimes only a simple "balc?o" for less than 5 US$ a month
when the common monthly income was 3 US$... No electricity in Anjuna
till late 1970s, no proper road to Mapsa and its cops, no "beach
culture" amongst locals, allowed these hipp
ies to live almost naked, smoking all kind of grasses... Why
Kathmandu ? Just because of the Indian tourist visa rules which
imposed to these first "tourists" traveling to Nepal in order to
purchase a fresh six-months visa at the local Indian consulate... (And
to smoke more local grass there too...)
This book has also a big set of pictures from those "golden days"
I purchased my sample as an ebook in amazon (free advertisement) but
you might find it somewhere else...

Re: [Goanet] Trump's Foreign Policy Platform

2016-05-27 Thread Mervyn Lobo
Roland,
Donald Trump’s campaign website listed 7 reasons why America should make
Canada the 51st State. The points break down into economical and security
reasons.

Below is summary of the outline:

1. Oil. Canada is rich with oil. They are our largest importer of crude
oil. Therefore, for economical and security reasons, Canada needs to be the
51st State.

2. Canada’s Border with the Antarctic is very long. For security reasons
pertaining to Russia, we need that border. Also, there is oil there.

3. Population. Adding Canada would be equivalent to adding another
California except much colder. To compete against the Chinese, we need a
bigger population to consume. Millennials aren’t having as many babies, so
making Canada America’s baby solves that problem. Our land mass will double
overnight.

4. Maple syrup. Another natural resource that’s worth its weight in gold on
the open market.

5. Beaver pellets. Global warming isn’t real, and people will need to keep
warm. Why pay beaver pellets when we could buy them for cheaper? That’s
common sense.

6. Hockey. We already have a majority of the NHL teams; we should have the
rest.

7. Vancouver and Toronto steal too much of our film and television
production. Netflix in Canada is also streaming the new Star Wars movie a
year before God’s Land. Enough is enough and it’s time for a change.

As we move further into the century, it is America’s right and a necessity
to expand. Mexico is lazy and full of rapists. That leaves Canada as our
only option, and I’m the only politician not afraid to say it.

Dear Floriano,

I will wait and watch. Maybe, the sun will rise on the party, maybe not in
my lifetime. If it does take "Goa's helm" in the next elections, it would
be a surprise. But surprises are part of politics. The AAP is also
promoting Good Governance. Modi promised Good Governance too. In the run-up
to the elections, each party makes lot of promises, and the the party that
wins fulfills some of them.
I got involved in a fracas on a forum where the adversaries provided a clue
that they are supporters of GRSP. What that sort of supporters, I hope GRSP
does not stand for Goonda-Raj. If abuse and name-calling is the trait of
these people who feel that GSRP is the 'right" party for Goa, I think
these people are delusional. One poster on this site said that he spoke to
many Goans who admitted never having heard of GRSP, and the party has
existed for a long time. The association of this party to a nasty website
further erodes the image of the party. See the language on the website, and
it should shame GSRP to have its banner on the website.
Whatever you and your party does is your and your party business. I am an
observer from outside. With new players like AAP and Forward Bloc, Goa's
politics will be murkier.

India may lose more than Rs 3 lakh crore of GDP if global food prices
double: UN report The report said the world is likely to suffer from more
volatile food pricing because of climate change, rising populations and
incomes. [image: India may lose more than Rs 3 lakh crore of GDP if global
food prices double: UN report]

A United Nations report has estimated that India could lose $49 billion
(more than Rs 3 lakh crore) of its GDP if global food prices double, PTI
reported. India will see the second highest loss after China, which is
estimated to lose $161 billion of its GDP because of volatile food prices.
The report said the world is likely to suffer from more volatile food
commodity prices because of several reasons, including climate change and
rising populations.

The UN Environment Programme-Global Footprint Network report, titled ‘How
food prices link environmental constraints to sovereign credit risk’, said,
“In the future, the world will likely suffer from higher and more volatile
food prices as a result of a growing imbalance between the supply of and
demand for food. Rising populations and incomes will intensify the demand
for food, while climate change and resource scarcity will disrupt food
production.”

The report looks at 110 countries to assess which ones face the worst risk
from an imbalance in food supply and demand. While China and India would
have the highest loss in terms of money, five African countries face the
highest loss in terms of percentage of GDP – Benin, Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire,
Senegal and Ghana.

United Nations Environment Programme Executive Director Achim Steiner said,
“Fluctuations in food prices are felt directly by consumers and reverberate
throughout national economies. As environmental pressures mount, it is
important to anticipate the economic impact of these stresses so that
countries and investors can work on mitigating and minimising risk.”

An open letter

signed by dozens of academics, authors and activists around the world has
urged writers to reconsider attending the Vedanta Jaipur Literature
Festival London 2016, saying the event's title sponsor is infamous for
human rights violations around the world.

"Are you aware that Vedanta's activities are destroying the lives of
thousands of people in Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan,
Karnataka and Punjab and also in Zambia, South Africa and Australia?" the
message asks prospective participants.

Vedanta Resources is metals and mining company headquartered in London, and
has often been under scrutiny

for its human rights and environmental record. The allegations against it
include dangerous working conditions, destruction of crops, unlawful
exports and widespread environmental damage, among others.

The letter points to accidents at the company's factories, its
irregularities in obtaining environmental clearances and its efforts to
out-muscle locals in legal battles, citing examples from Chhattisgarh,
Odisha, Goa and Rajasthan. It claims Vedanta is trying to "create
favourable public opinion" by sponsoring events such as the Jaipur lit fest
and the International Film Festival of India.

The letter notes that "literature does not exist in a vacuum" and that
writers and artists "also have responsibilities". It urges writers to
"withdraw from involvement in this discredited and damaging PR campaign,
rather than lending [their] name to it".

Here is the full text of the letter:

Dear All,

We are deeply shocked and dismayed to hear that you have agreed to
participate at the Jaipur Literature Festival claiming to be "The Greatest
Literary Show on Earth " which has 'the
world's most hated company
'
Vedanta as its key sponsor. Are you aware that Vedanta's activities are
destroying the lives of thousands of people in Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Goa,
Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Punjab and also in Zambia, South
Africa and Australia? Are you also aware that Zambian villagers are
currently taking Vedanta subsidiary KCM to court in the UK, accusing it of
consistently poisoning their water over the last decade
?

In 2011 Zambian High Court Judge Phillip Musonda said he wanted to make an
example of Vedanta for their 'gross recklessness' in polluting the River
Kafue without remorse, and highlighted 'KCM's don't care attitude whether
human life which sacrosanct in our constitution was lost or not.' In 2014
Vedanta 69% owner and Chairman Anil Agarwal was caught on video
 bragging to businessmen at a
Bangalore conference that he had bought the Zambian copper mines at a
fraction of their value and was making $500 million each year despite
declaring a loss in Zambia. The Zambian government reacted by auditing the
mines, and discovered vast tax evasion schemes and asset stripping

.

In Korba, Chhattisgarh, India between 40 and 100 workers
 died at Vedanta
subsidiary BALCO's aluminium smelter complex when a chimney under
construction collapsed on them in September 2009. The subsequent judicial
inquiry into the incident found Vedanta guilty of negligence and using
sub-standard materials and construction methods. However, Vedanta's lawyers
suppressed the report which was leaked by activists in 2014

In Odisha, India a nineteen year struggle by indigenous communities, Dalits
and farmers led to a historic victory in 2014 when Vedanta was stopped from
mining the sacred Niyamgiri hills for bauxite. Vedanta's attempt to secure
the mountain through State Owned OMC was rejected by the Supreme Court
again on May 6, 2016. Vedanta Aluminium Ltd had built the 1 mtpa Lanjigarh
refinery at the base of the Niyamgiri hills in 2004, and even expanded it
six fold, despite having no permission to mine bauxite from the hills

[Goanet] MARGAO JMFC ACQUITS RAILWAY PORTERS BOOKED BY INSPECTOR DATTAGURU SAWANT

2016-05-27 Thread Aires Rodrigues
In a major setback and embarrassment to Senior Crime Branch Police
Inspector Dattguru Sawant the Margao Judicial Magistrate First Class
Vijayalaxmi Shivolkar has acquitted the two Margao Railway Station porters
Mohammed Samsher Alam Sayyed and Mohammed Abass Sayyed who were in 2013
booked by him for allegedly selling substandard helmets.

Dattaguru Sawant is the Investigating Officer in the infamous Louis Berger
case and was also in the forefront probing the recent rape case against
Santa Cruz MLA Babush Monseratte.

In 2013 while as Police Sub-Inspector at the Konkan Railway Station in
Margao Dattaguru Sawant allegedly booked the two railway porters under
section 379 and 420 of Indian Penal Code after they refused to give him a
free helmet that he demanded.

Acquitting the porters of all charges, Judge Shivolkar in her judgment has
observed that the evidence on record against the porters was neither
reliable, credible nor trustworthy. Judge Shivolkar in her order has also
observed that Dattaguru Sawant despite various summons issued to him had
failed to remain present in Court.

The two porters have also filed a complaint of extortion against Dattaguru
Sawant before the three member State Police Complaints Authority (SPCA)
headed by Retired Justice RMS Khandeparkar with the next hearing scheduled
on 3rd June.

The two porters in their complaint have alleged that Dattguru Sawant
on 1st September
2013 had demanded a free helmet from the goods consignment that had arrived
at the Railway Station and as it was refused Dattaguru Sawant arrested and
implicated them in a false and fabricated case which was not only a grave
police misconduct but a severe police atrocity.

The porters in their complaint have sought directions by the SPCA to the
Director General of Police to register an F.I.R besides disciplinary action
against Police Inspector Dattaguru Sawant.

Dattaguru Sawant known to be linked to the RSS was inducted as a Police
Sub-Inspector in 2002 during Manohar Parrikar’s first term as Chief
Minister but his appointment was set aside by the High Court as illegal.
The matter is now pending before the Supreme Court since 2004.

Dattaguru Sawant was later dismissed from service in 2004 for allegedly
extorting money at Mapusa but managed to get reinstated in 2006.

Dattaguru Sawant reportedly had a criminal record even before joining the
Goa Police with an F.I.R registered against him in 1999 at the Panaji
Police Station for having along with some BJP activists sprayed black ink
on the then Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Shantaram Naik at the
entrance of Cafe Bhonsle in Panaji.

[Goanet] JUDGES SHOULD LEAD BY EXAMPLE

2016-05-27 Thread Aires Rodrigues
In a move towards transparency and accountability, the Judges of the
Supreme Court of India in 2009 began making their assets and liabilities
public on the court’s website. However of the current 29 Supreme Court
Judges four of them have not yet made their assets public which include
Justices RF Nariman, Abhay Manohar Sapre, Uday Umesh Lalit and Amitava Roy
in addition to the recently appointed four other Judges.

On 2nd September 2009 the Judges of the Bombay High Court had decided
through a unanimous resolution of the full court to make their assets
public. But despite almost seven long years having elapsed the veil of
secrecy over the assets and liabilities of Judges continues with the High
Court defaulting in complying with its own resolution.

As is required to be done by all other public servants, the assets and
liabilities of all Judges and their kin should be displayed annually for
public analysis and scrutiny. Time for Judges to act transparently. It
would then facilitate to identify and cleanse the Temples of Justice from
the rotten apples plaguing it. Judges surely would not forgive those who
default or fail in being clean and upright. Should they not lead by example?

[Goanet] AIFF REPORT: WAS NEVER LOOKING TO AVOID ANY TEAM, ASSERTS NICOLAI + PIX (ONE ATTACHMENT)

2016-05-27 Thread AIFF Media
Dear colleagues,

Please find below a report wherein Head Coach of the Indian U-17 World Cup
Squad Nicolai Adam says that he was not looking to avoid any Team in the
AFC U-16 Championship.

*‘OUR GOAL STAYS THE SAME’*

*Was Never Looking To Avoid Any Team, Asserts Nicolai*

*GOA:* India U-16 Head Coach Nicolai Adam said he wasn’t looking to
“avoiding any particular Team,” in the AFC U-16 Finals. Moments after India
were drawn in Group A with Asian Powerhouses Iran, Saudi Arabia and United
Arab Emirates, Nicolai maintained that all he wants is a “good Competition.”

“There was no question about avoiding any particular Team. I was perhaps
the most relaxed person in the hall and all I want is good Competition
which will augur well for the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup, he said.

Will you label Group A as the ‘Group of Death?’

This isn’t a Group of Death at all. This is us plus 15 other Best Teams
from Asia. I don’t know how many times I have met Iran as opponents and
they are there again in our Group,” he stated.

India had last met Iran in the AFC U-16 Qualifiers in Tabriz in a match
which Iran won 3-0.

“I don’t have any idea about Saudi Arabia and UAE. I will try to gather as
much information as we can about them and then sit down to analyse them and
find out the solution to beat them” Nicolai saids about India’s other two
opponents in Group A.

The AFC U-16 Finals kick-off in Goa on September 15, 2016 with the Final
slated to be held onOctober 2, 2016.

“When I see the whole matrix, they are all good Teams. You just have to
play them one by one. Our goal stays the same – qualifying to the U-17
World Cup on merit. We will ready and fit for the Championship,” Nicolai
added.

With the AIFF Youth Cup having been concluded, the India U-16 Team are
proceeding to exposure Tours to Germany and Norway as part of their
preparation for the Championship.

“We have a lot of ground to cover. Right from our May 28 morning when we
land in Germany at 8am in the morning, we will start. The same day
at 6pm we will have our first session. What it basically means is that
there isn’t much time to rest,” Nicolai quipped.

Below are India’s fixtures for the Tournament:

September 15, 2016: India vs UAE – September (7pm).

September 18, 2016: Saudi Arabia vs India (7pm).

September 21, 2016: India vs Iran (7pm).
