[Goanet] OffTopic: (Only in Canada) 300 South African firefighters break out into song and dance

2016-05-31 Thread Albert Peres

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JokUgo5dxY&feature=youtu.be

300 South African firefighters break out into song and dance upon their
arrival at Edmonton International Airport.

They are off the help with the forest fires

http://globalnews.ca/news/2728034/fort-mcmurray-wildfire-crews-to-get-boost-from-south-african-firefighters/

Global News reported, Malekgoa Letwaba, 28, has been a firefighter for
four years and was also in Alberta last year battling blazes.

“It feels pretty good. We are ready for it, can’t wait to do our
job,” she said.

However, she admits there are differences between her country and Canada.

“Mostly the terrain is quite different from ours but we’ll adapt and
it’ll be good.”

Letwaba said she hopes Canadian and South African firefighters can learn
from one another.

“We got our different ways of doing things and you guys do as well.
We’ll combine [them] and do a great job, all of us. [We] learn from you
guys and you guys learn from us. We like singing and dancing so we’ll
teach you guys a couple songs as well.”

Mumbai BJP President Finances Convent Re-structuring

May 30, 2016

May 30, 2016: The Sister Disciples of the Divine Master (PDDM) of Bandra,
Mumbai, yesterday inaugurated the new asphalt resurfacing project on their
Prarthanalaya convent. The project is being financed with the private funds of
Ashish Shelar, a local member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP, the Hindu
nationalist party). Speaking to AsiaNews the politician says: "As a
representative elected by the people, it is my responsibility to do the best
for the community, neighborhood and society. Prarthanalaya is a sacred place of
prayer, where every person is welcomed. The sisters are at the service of
society and are building new communities through their prayers, and various
forms of social activities. I am happy to offer my help. "

The initiative responds to the need for modernization of the structure and was
immediately supported by the Hindu leaders, contacted by the sisters.
Prarthanalaya (house of prayer) is a complex that houses the convent of the
congregation and a chapel, which is open for Eucharistic adoration for all the
faithful, including those of non-Christian religions.

The opening ceremony of the project of asphalting of the entire complex began
with a short prayer and the blessing by Fr. Michael Pinto. Following this
Sister Amita Mascarenhes, superior of the convent, and Sister Vimla, split a
coconut, in a typical Indian ritual with which augurs"good luck".

In addition to the nuns, the Deputy Mayor of Mumbai Alka Kerkar, many friends
and benefactors were present. Ashish Shelar also dug the first hole to start
off the construction process.

After the ceremony, Fr. Pinto blessed the grotto dedicated to Mary Queen of the
Apostles. Ashish Shelar also entered the cave to pay homage to the Virgin.
Before he crossed the threshold, he took off his shoes as a sign of respect,
then laid wreaths around the statue and bowed his head in an act of veneration.

[Goanet] Raw Earth by Alexandre Moniz Barbosa

2016-05-31 Thread augusto pinto
*Raw Earth* by the journalist Alexandre Moniz Barbosa starts promisingly
and certainly quite colorfully. "Blood seeped slowly from the wounds and
formed a bright red streak on the cassock he was wearing. It darkened the
purple fascia around his waist and plastered the clothes to his body." A
novel which starts out with an action scene like this involving a religious
and that too an Archbishop grabs attention. Does the book sustain the
attention it creates?

Barbosa's novel is a 190 page political thriller the plot of which tries to
weave in mining and religion and politics in a Goan setting that seems not
too far into the future. It posits as the two main protagonists the Chief
Minister and the Archbishop of Goa both of whom happen to be brothers.
Although this is a bit far fetched that's all right for this genre, which
requires readers to suspend disbelief and be ready to be taken for a ride
full of suspense and drama. Not that there isn't sufficient reality in the
book. In fact the incidents of Barbosa's fiction can be easily matched and
even bettered by the Machiavellian happenings in real Goan politics which
make the mind spin - just look at the sex, prostitution, and political
skulduggery of the recent events involving Shri Babush Monserrate MLA.

The bone of contention is the Netravali Wild Life Sanctuary which a bunch
of Goan mineowners want to open up for mining for ore. The idea is hatched
by a recent North Indian settler named Singhal who is a high stakes fixer
who moves between Goa and Delhi arranging for Goan politicians to carry
suitcases full of high denomination currency notes to their high commands.

However this comes in conflict with the interests of villagers of Cawrem
and other mining areas where this activity is disrupting their lives. The
Archbishop comes into the picture when on one of his pastoral visits he
comes across a child who has been run over by a mining truck and volunteers
to take her to the hospital. Slowly he gets drawn into the conflict that is
taking place between the government and villagers supported by NGOs over
the mining issue.

The cabal of mine-owners led by the wily Singhal who are faced with public
uprisings which will ruin their plans, try to smoothen things out for
themselves by bumping off the protagonists. I won't give away more of the
plot.

Is it a good read? I'd say it's so-so. For one thing while the book is in
the honored tradition of political novels from Goa pioneered by Ben Antao,
it doesn't have the sex which he used to ladle out in healthy doses.
Although the book started with a likely heroine in the form of a female NGO
Barbosa doesn't try to use her to create any romantic interest which might
have helped the plot along and which could have added some fire to the
story.

Also Barbosa doesn't quite build up the element of suspense needed to make
the thriller thrilling enough. Things go the way of the good guys (who we
all know aren't all that good) far too easily in the end. Maybe Barbosa
needed a good editor or reader to give him some honest feedback about the
pacing and plotting which could have been better.

Barbosa's experience as a newsman helps him to flesh in details of Goan
political life and add local color. I'd give the book some credit for
trying and the fact that I did read it till the end means that it was
readable enough as far as I'm concerned. For Goan readers it will give an
opportunity to reflect on the political and economic scenario of Goa as
they follow the events of the book; and for those new to Goa it'll give
them an idea of how things happen around here.

Dear Seb,

Sandeep Heble's spouting and actions were that of a hacktivist when the BJP was
in the opposition; Now, they are that of a sycophant. Your choice if you want
to believe that they are reasonable.

Having said that, at this point and time, I expect the Goa BJP to win again,
and I do not expect the Sandeep Hebles of this word to have a single word to
say about The Coconut Trees of Goa which have become Grass, The various U turns
and the rampant destruction of the environment in Goa.

True to form, there will be long discourses about Basketball, Volleyball or
Table Tennis. What did they say about Nero .when Rome was burning ?

[Goanet] Fwd: QUESTIONNAIRE FOR GOMANTAK TIMES ON GOA STATEHOOD DAY

Dear Aires bab,

With due respect to you I took initiative to forward my opinion on State
development based questionnaire framed by Gomantak Times.

I saw on GT today ( 30th May) and surprisingly my name was not figuring in
that list of 19 respondents out of 700 respondents received by them that
means 681 are either been shelved or put in the dustbin.

What a joke that GT did on Statehood Day.

What does the Editor think of the sentence at the headline, “Seem not
convinced with this development” That means he has doubt about the
development, may be he has not read the comments from questionnaire from
the rest of respondents including of mine which is gone in the dustbin?

Why he chose BJP men in the list first of all, when they will definitely
support the development and their government.

What the badminton, boxing and others like minded players will know about
the development. Even your write up I suppose might not have come full.

The whole business of this exercise is gone flop and I feel pity that I
have wasted my time.

Dr. Joe D’Souza when I inquired whether he is willing to say something,
and his reply was, "do not waste your time". Probably he was aware what
would be the outcome of this whole exercise. And he even said that the
migrants Editors from English dailies, play a role to finish Goa except one
Editor which I say is "The Goan."

Please do not ask me for such things hereafter, as I have bad experience of
these migrant Editors who are on the run to finish Goa.

[Goanet] FEEDBACK FROM NEWSPAPERS HEADLINES ON ISSUES

2016-05-31 Thread Stephen Dias
-

REPORT ON CERTAIN NEWSPAPERS HEADLINES FROM VARIOUS ISSUES WITH MY COMMENTS

>From Herald news dated: 31.5.2016.

1. Durgadas Kamat and five others resign from Congress and join Goa
Forward challenging Luizinho Faleiro style of working and difference of
opinion.

Comments: Congress President lately was found acting on
dictatorial
way and this could be the result/cause.

2. BJP top brass hits out at NGO’s for opposing BJP projects.

Comments: In dictatorship one has to oppose projects with solutions which
are detrimental if against the interest of the public or else it will be a
failure.

3. Smart City GSIDC vs CCP are at logger heads

Comments: This was expected as long as the present Mayor is in the chair
and wanting to clean the city by his own ways, and now he sees the Smart
City funds to be used by CCP and not GSIDC, perhaps he is eyeing for it and
not allowing GSIDC for implementation. Panjimite fear that Smart City will
get affected on account of this controversy.

4. Parrikar inaugurates Garbage Treatment Plant at Saligao but leaves
Multi-level Pay Parking .

Comments: Parrikar took most important decision by inaugurating this plant
as it was most important to Goans, but delayed other pending inauguration
of Pay Parking at Santa Monica, reasons not been told.

5. Universal Medical Insurance Scheme launched or is it election
insurance scheme?

Comments; It could be an election scheme but this was necessary.

6. President voices concern over attack on Africans.

Comments: President may be right with the feedback received from other
states in the country but he may not be aware what Nigerians in Goa are
creating numerous problems and attack Goans in the streets.

IN REGARDS TO NAVHIND TIMES NEWS

1.Questions put up by Navhind Times reporter Ramnath N.Pai raikar
to State Advocate General Atmaram Nadkarni on various issues such as; a)
Dual Citizenship, b) Madhei water Disputes Tribunal, c) Appointment of
Lokayuatta and Chairman of Goa Public Commission, d) Construction of
Miramar-Dona Paula road, e) Construction of Third Mandovi Bridge d) Garbage
Treatment Plant at Saligao, e) Pending issues of Mopa airport e) Tiracol
Bridge.

Comments: Answers by Atmaram Nadkarni were not to the above points and
found incomplete and vague.

2.Elvis transforming jails into reforming home says Chief Minister.

Comments: It appears that many facilities will be available in the jail,
and the inmates will feel that it is better to remain in the jail as they
will not get such facilities when they are out of jail. With this trend
future convicts will be happy to go to jail and the public hereafter will
not have to worry for thefts and rapes. Otherwise they seems to be roaming
in the streets doing nothing on account of unemployment.

3.Government launches Dean Dayal Swasthya Seva Yojana Scheme.

Comments: This scheme it appears in the interest of public.

4.After Saligao waste plant another likely to come in Curchorem
says Parrikar.

Comments: It is a welcome project at Saligao Plant provided it works
satisfactorily and successful.

5.Arihant yet to free up stuck pontoon at Arossim.

Comments: This was expected, on account of its size of pontoon and the
location. I was sure that there will be lots of problems. Decision taken by
Alina Saldanha, Minister of Science and Technology and her so called
experts who advised her to cut the pontoon without consulting the experts
from marine engineering workshops in the country or at the Garden
Reach Calcutta
. Arihant are making all efforts to retrieve Pontoon to ashore with the
higher capacity of crane and bigger JCB machine which is been failing its
operation. The environmental disaster is in the cards for the wrong plan,
unless authorities come to its rescue for salvaging pontoon operation at
the earliest.

If necessary must take advice from foreign experts.

2016-05-31 Thread Seb dc
Views are poles apart from those residing in GOA!! I would rate the govt. a
disaster, reading all that comes out on the net and solely on its Election
Manifesto.

You just need to lift the BJP's manifesto and check how much they have full
filled their promises, despite running a majority govt. The number of
U-turns will have a big impact. The issues of Vermin and Palm tree are
enough to bring them down.

To make matters worse the people elected Parrikar, as CM and not a rubber
stamp. But he left the bjp's sinking ship to run to Delhi. One thing is for
sure, Bjp cannot get rid of corruption, coz like cong. their mla's are in it
too. Even fielding Catholic mla's won't get Bjp votes.
For that matter you need to look at Delhi, how AAP manages to do so much in
spite of Centre trying to derail their achievements.
The common man sees through all this.

For corruption free Goa, both the parties need to GO. Possibly GSRP/GOA
FRONT or even AAP will get a big chunk of votes in 2017.

Are you happy with Goa's development scenario?(Gomantak Times, May 30)

Compared to its predecessor, the Government has fared a lot better.
However, compared to Parrikar's 2000 - 2005 tenure, this Government has
been a pale shadow. After 7 years of misrule by the previous regime, people
had plenty of hopes & aspirations & in Parrikar, they saw a man who could
deliver but sadly, this Government has fallen short to deliver on its
promises despite being in a comfortable majority. Posts of Lokayukta & RTI
commissioners have been filled only towards the fag end of the tenure which
should have been a priority for a Government which came to power on the
plank of Zero tolerance towards corruption. Wheels of administration are
moving slowly & files moving even slower from one table to another. For a
common man to get justice remains a distant dream with cases lingering in
courts and similar being the scenario on various other fronts. Goa, a world
renowned tourist destination, still has heaps of garbage along its streets,
which is disappointing. Sports infrastructure has been created but rarely
put to good use and no proper sports policy in place. Reforms are happening
at a very slow pace and very little is being done to bring about
substantial improvement in overall governance. When the proposed IT Park
will actually come up, nobody knows. On the brighter side, the Government
has given a lot of good schemes to the people and the health insurance
scheme for all its citizens is another feather in its cap. Construction of
wider roads, flyovers & bridges, infrastructure works, Smart city, etc. are
some of their positive efforts and achievements which need to be
appreciated. On a scale of 1 to 10, if I were to rate the previous
Government at 2, then I would rate present one at 4. Average at best but
short of expectations. With barely a few months to go now, the Government
needs to wake up & pull up their socks. Administration needs to be
overhauled and time bound delivery of services must become a reality rather
than being just another bill passed in the Assembly. What we expect the
Government to give us is a clean, beautiful and garbage free Goa with
eco-friendly Industries, job creation and incentives for the youth, proper
traffic management and public mobility plan, tougher laws and speedy
justice, a corruption free environment, friendly and responsive officers to
attend to public needs, crime control and good policing. Let?s hope they
are listening.

Today is Goa Statehood day but there is nothing to celebrate about. Goans
now realize the trap they got into by craving for statehood. An illusion
gone awfully sour. With statehood the common man has lost but only the
politicians have become crorepatis. As a Union territory, we were ably
managed with 28 MLAs and a cabinet of four. Today Goa is totally mismanaged
with 40 MLAs and a jumbo cabinet of 12.

Very frankly the performance of the current BJP Government would have to be
rated at Zero, given that Goans were promised the moon with Zero Tolerance
to Corruption and Good Governance. It has been only U turns and rampant
corruption all the way. The cavalier manner in which the current BJP
government is heartlessly and mercilessly destroying Goa should be a matter
of great concern.

It is distressing to see and be witness to the continuing rampant
destruction and devastation of Goa. In 2012 the BJP had promised a
?Parivartan? and ?Acche Din?, but Goa is sadly by the day just getting
further corroded beyond recognition. It should have been the endeveaour of
those in power to at least salvage and safeguard what remains of Goa.
Unfortunately Goa is getting defaced at an electrifying speed. Posterity
will never forgive the current rulers for their selfish and dubious role in
this further irreparable damage and destruction of what was once a

Subject: RE: Fw: A very short Timeline  of important events in our Goan
Association (UK) history in the making in London - UK

A Short timeline= Goan Association(uk) Hi Joe, before we all become doddery and
gaga my short response to your note All that glitters is not Gold in Rip off
Britain, The Goan Overseas Association UK was registered and known as The
G.O.A. UK Limited over the years it was felt that as we live here in the United
Kingdom the term Overseas' was not appropriate, hence the trading name of Goan
Association UK a company limited by guarantee registered in the United Kingdom
to safeguard members liability, assets and that of office bearers who are
elected by the general body at an AGM.    We have been to court at least seven
times IN FORTY YEARS due to the foolishness of office bearers under the theme
“in the interest of the association”. As our people keep looking the other way,
the underdeveloped crab school of thought   has given way, in my opinion, to
the infestation of cockroaches taking office over the last ten years  with
self-enrichment in mind.   It appears some   people are even helicoptered  into
positions  to cash in specifically in the Golden Year of the Goan Association
(UK)and then helicopter themselves out again . This illuminates the street
credibility and decision making process in pricing the entrance fee for the
Gold Anniversary celebration where the complimentary guest list will also shine
to match the band, giving an atmosphere of sunshine in a fools paradise.    Our
goenkarpon only have to remember the 2015 trumpeting of attendance figures on
“Goa Day” aka UK Goan Festival at Cranford , and when questioned, the
“complimentary” ticket response as seen on the video below (starting from
minute 8.57).  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXwSqVZsavs   Rewinding back ten
years a three bedroom flat on the 13th floor of a tower block at Ilford was
purchased in cash with money from the sale of the GOA Clubhouse and grounds
which many of us remember.   From my recollection, contracts were exchanged
within half an hour.   I was told at a board meeting that money in the Money
markets can go missing from the Bank and needs to be ring fenced. There was no
mention of  yield from money ring-fenced  being credited to the Bank. As far as
I am aware, the Rental income stream cannot be known or verified as Auditing
process has been removed (ENOE). Rental Income 2015 @ £1,478.75 PCM =
£17,745.00 Outgoings: Ground Rent  £252.00 Estate
Agent Fees   £1,397.00 Service Charges  £3,468.00 Sundry Mainanence
    £78.00   (5,195.00) Net Income
£12,550.00 As you are aware I did not renew my
membership and after over 35 years as an active member my address was
immediately deleted from the membership roll. This is another issue. So Joe I
must commend you as an active Life Member for the items stored up your sleeve,
this will have slowed down the decay, sudden death or even voluntary
liquidation of the company, Administrators will need to claw back funds back to
the company.    The United Kingdom Government recently hosted a conference on
Fraud and Corruption. I am sure the appropriate Secretary of State will also be
interested. The goauk.com website advises that the 12 Voluntary  Directors are
supported by a General Secretary and a Company Secretary  I can only assume
these two posts are self-appointed and remunerated to practice financial
terrorism on the company as instructed by the servants of the company.  People
