Why would this happen? And the children of Goa and the world will watch?. I
dont know Anastasio but I think he has done a marvelous job in putting up
facts of around 1961 in the petition. (All these events have gone towards
the birth of Current Goa. All these have to be taught in our school
history. Not giving a plebiscite to decide and not taught their history is
itself a human rights issue ) The Goan petitioners are seeking justice for
their mother Goa in a civilised peaceful way. The justice sought is only as
per the laws of The World Order and UN Charter, of which India is the
member. Why should anybody object to this. Everybody from CM to PM
understands that special status has to be given to Goa to safeguard its
identity. They have publicly promised this. Unfortunately, I am told that
their hands are tied because of the Indian constitution. Hence it is
required to go to the UN. This is the right way as Goa's place is
international. Let the UN decide.

I am also happy that a knowledgeable and Learned Professor who is the HOD
Political science of Goa University, is a member of this forum. Could the
learned Professor throw some light on all the events stated in the "Free
Goa petition"? http://chn.ge/2AIJ2jA Are these factually correct.?
Could we debate and discuss transparently and openly so that the petition
becomes even stronger and the Justice is Finally given to our Motherland
Goa. Thanks a million

Cheers,
Mari

Re: [Goanet] Goan Diaspora: Zest, thy name is Zulema!

2018-01-23 Thread Eugene Correia
The claim by Zulema that she "instituted" the team Kololians is factually
wrong, as it was started by Alex Nunes. The fact remains that she was its star
player, but there were other Goan girls, some who are here in Toronto, who
helped the team attain the superiority it commanded. There were at least two
Sikh girls, seen in the photo in Cyprian Fernandes' book, Stars Next Door, one
of the photos accompanying an article on Uganda sports by Armand Rodrigues,
also based in Toronto.
Another factually incorrect fact is that she and her family had to "flee"
Uganda in 1971 because of dictator Idi Amin expelsion of Asians. The Uganda
expulsion happened in 1972; So "fleeing" is out of question.
Her statement that “Goans looked at me as an ‘Indian'" is found to be far from
reality even though she didn't play for any Goan team. Equally shocking is her
saying, "received little or no support from Goans". The other Goan players in
the team who are here may be silently laughing at it.
Isn't it that that the school board had on it a Goan, whose name, if I am
right, was Garlos Godinho?
"Don’t be in a dilemma, vote for Zulema!" is the sligan she used to campaign
for the post of president of Goan Overseas Association (GOA) Toronto, which she
unfortunately lost to her Uganda compatroit John Nazareth in 1984. She
eventually won the post in 1986, and I was invited by her to join the executive
committee, which I served as assistant general secretary.

[Goanet] Sal gram sabha plunges into acrimony over stone crusher

2018-01-23 Thread samir umarye
--
Samir Umarye

BICHOLIM: The Sal gram sabha on Sunday plunged into acrimony over the issue
of a stone crusher that has allegedly caused cracks in the walls of a
temple in its vicinity.
At the very outset of the gram sabha, the villagers demanded to know from
the sarpanch whether the stone crusher has all the NOCs and whether the
panchayat was aware of its working.
Replying to the villagers, Sarpanch Prakash Raut said that the panchayat
does not have much information about the working of the stone crusher and
whether it has required NOCs. This answer angered the villagers who
demanded to know why such a polluting unit was allowed to carry out
operation in the area. Meanwhile, some of the villagers alleged that due to
the blasting carried out by the stone crusher, the walls of a temple in the
vicinity have developed cracks.
The villagers were also informed that the panchayat was not getting any
revenue from the crusher.
Later, a resolution was passed to summon the owner of the stone crusher to
show cause why action should not be taken against him for running the unit.
The gram sabha also discussed in detail the drinking water problem in the
village and it was decided to take stern action and also resort to strike.
It was also decided to increase the house rent for all those who are paying
rent less than Rs 500.
The panchayat secretary informed the gram sabha that a site was needed to
dump garbage, but no one was ready to give their land for that purpose.
Even the issue of crematorium was discussed but even here no one was ready
to donate land for the same.
One Rajendra Raut informed that he was ready to give his land for a cattle
pond if it fetched him some income. Later, the secretary read out the audit
report for the year 2016-17.

[Goanet] Padmaavat - Let the people Judge

2018-01-23 Thread Sandeep Heble
Padmaavat - Let the people Judge

Why is so much fuss is being made over this “Padmaavat” movie? It beats all
logical reasoning and imagination. There are so many people involved behind
the making of a movie, is it fair to ban it just because some elements may
have some issues with it? Let the people decide. In today's times, movies
run just a few days during which time the Producer recovers most of his
money and if the movie is good the profits will roll in. Then the next week
comes and the next movie releases. That is the kind of a shelf life that a
movie has. So many movies which have been opposed in the past, when these
have been released we are left to wonder what this fuss is all about. Is it
really worth it?

There is a need to differentiate between the real world and the reel world.
The reel world is more of fun and entertainment. We watch films to be
entertained. Kishore Kumar in one of his interviews illustrated this when
he said, “When a man and a woman roll over each other on velvet grass in
Kashmir valley, you expect them to make love - not sing in the voices of
Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar.” But that is exactly how our movies are.
We cannot expect them to be reality all the time. There will be a separate
bracket for that, a documentary film genre. But in popular cinema which is
made for the masses, some element of creative expression will always be
there. Songs, music and dance have always been integral to Hindi cinema.
What would our movies be without that?

The Indian audience loves to be entertained by the voices of Kishore, Lata,
Mukesh, Asha, Rafi and now Arijit and Shreya. The Ghoomar song should be
seen in this context and backdrop, that it is after all a work of fiction.
The movie, “Padmaavat” likewise might have elements of fiction and creative
liberties taken in it, so what? So many other movies on historical
characters have been made in the past which have songs and other creative
liberties. Many of these have also been critically acclaimed and have been
well appreciated by the people. Let the audience similarly judge this one.
The Supreme Court decision has now come and these fringe groups must now
respect it. The State is duty bound to protect our Constitutional freedoms.
Just let us enjoy our movies.

warm regards,

Sandeep Heble

[Goanet] AIFF REPORT: ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE INDIAN FOOTBALL GOES TO THE NEXT LEVEL, SAYS MR. DAS

2018-01-23 Thread AIFF Media
 Dear Colleagues,

Please find below a report with quotes from AIFF General Secretary Mr.
Kushal Das on grassroots football in India.

---

ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE INDIAN FOOTBALL GOES TO THE NEXT LEVEL: MR. DAS

*AIFF Media Team*

*NEW DELHI: *A sustainable grassroots programme through proper
implementation bolsters a sport’s ecosystem for years to come. With India
coming on the back of hosting its first FIFA World Cup ever, the FIFA U-17
World Cup 2017 India, the popularity of football in the nation is like
never before.

Cashing-in on the growing popularity of the sport, the All India Football
Federation General Secretary stressed on the importance of grassroots in
the development of sports and the culture of sports that is inculcated
through grassroots.

Speaking at the 5th International Convention on Football Business under the
GOAL 2018 Programme held at FICCI, in the capital, Mr. Das said, “We have
to go and work on the grassroots level and that is the only way we can
develop any sport. We should create a culture of sports where from an early
age kids are being engaged in a systematic structure for football”

“The AIFF has U-18, U-15 and U-13 leagues and plans to start baby leagues
soon. It is only a matter of time before Indian football goes to the next
level through this structure of football that has been implemented for men
and a similar structure will be setup for Women’s football”

AIFF’s efforts to develop football in India have been recognized by the
Asian Football Confederation (AFC) as well and the AIFF won the AFC
President Recognition for Grassroots Football in 2014 and won the AFC
Developing Member Association of the Year Award in 2016.

“The kind of talent in Indian football which is coming up is amazing”,
quipped Mr. Das on the Indian Arrows and the Indian U-16 National Team
which qualified for the AFC U-16 Championship Finals. “It is the content
which matters and in the next few years the contents will be very good as
the players in the pipeline are exceptionally talented”

“We have been able to transform the setup of Indian football into a proper
structure and it is only a matter of time before Indian football goes to
the next level”, Mr. Das added.

Sitting on the dias besides the AIFF General Secretary was Indian Women’s
Senior National Team’s Dalima Chhibber who hailed the opportunities
provided for women’s footballers through the Indian Women’s League. “The
Indian Women’s League provided a platform for all women footballers in the
country and increased the popularity of the sport amongst women”

“The Indian Women’s League has been a much welcomed initiative started by
the AIFF and it has helped young girls realize that they too can play
football”

[Goanet] UK: Government announces Minister for Loneliness Jan 2018

UK: Government announces Minister for Loneliness Jan 2018

Tracey Couch MP is the first ever minister appointed to combat Social Isolation
in the United Kingdom. According to a 2017 research, more than 9 million people
always – or often – feel lonely in Britain and around 200,000 older people have
not had a conversation with a friend or relative in more than a month.

In England it is not unusual to observe young people talking to themselves as
they are screen attached, their mobile phone is their only friend with
electronic voices here and there as they text and email rather than just visit
and talk or even enjoy the countryside from a train, bus or car.

Goan People being lonely is very low and would not be considered lonely enough
to qualify for research, Most of us are party people and have a low rate of
depression, dancing away our troubles with music in addition to catering and
liquid refreshment, garnished with gossip and sometimes the latest in designer
clothing. Card and Board Games and the occasional sports day keeps us mentally
alert. Furthermore we have plenty of opportunities to meet at church, dances,
funerals, school runs and family events like birthdays, weddings and
christenings.

As 2017 came to a close, the High Commission of India London provided shelter
for the people who keep our community intentionally homeless for a Goan
Christmas Party. After all only Goans could dance to the tune of Jingle Bells –
Oh what fun.

Living in breadline Britain is not easy for Social organisers to have a bespoke
social with a feel good factor especially surrounded by predators scavenging for
money. I have been short changed at the bar for example at a recent event, a
small plastic cup of water. orange or Coke was a £1.00 each. Having measured
it myself it takes nine cups to make a litre or retail water at nine pounds a
bottle. Good job these people are not involved with the sale of fuels like
petrol, oil and diesel also essential to our civilization. Caterers often offer
a snack plate with small portions, you need to purchase two or three before you
feel you had a snack.

Like the Bar, an additional income stream is the Raffle, a Goldmine as Patrons
donate attractive prizes, the organisers sell raffles with enthusiastic minors
whose efforts raise revenue, for what purpose this is very rarely announced. It
can be observed that the people handling the money are the same people at the
Raffle table.

Also from my observation and personal opinion, taking centre stage of all the
Predators is the GWS (Goan Welfare Society). I do not feel there is anything
Goan Welfare or Society about this outfit masquerading as
