in India so far.

32 year old Civil Engineer, earning Rs 33,000 per month (disgraceful), now 
completely disabled, with future earnings-possibility “zero”.

The amount awarded Rs 1.4 crore is equivalent to USD 217K or CAD 272K or GBP 
155K.

The St Cruz MLA Tony Fernandes has belatedly finally opposed the
politically motivated Greater Panaji Planning and Development Authority
(PDA) which was malafiedly created by Town & Planning Minister Vijai
Sardesai so that he along with his accomplice Babush Monseratte could rake
in their crores by converting the remaining hills, fields and orchard land
 into concrete jungles. It is high time that the other two MLAs Francis
Silveira and Pandurang Madkaikar also dump this PDA.

We should infact hold Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar squarely responsible
for having without consulting the concerned people allowed this new PDA to
be fraudulently set up.

Let us hope that the government will at least now graciously bow down to
the sentiments of the people and immediately scrap this Greater Panaji PDA.
It should be the end of the road to those evil designs of Babush Monseratte
and his partner in Crime Vijai Sardesai.

It is often difficult for a doctor to distinguish between pancreatitis 
(inflammation of the pancreas) and pancreatic cancer. Both conditions present 
similar symptoms and may look the same on radiology scans. Most patients 
require exploratory surgery to establish a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and 
determine the extent of the disease.”

Lilavati Hospital has indicated that no surgery will be done on Parrikar. It 
may indicate that a definite diagnosis of pancreatitis has been made or that at 
Stage IV, no surgical exploration is necessary.

Perhaps our radiation oncologist Goanetter Dr Gilbert Lawrence can correct or 
enlighten. In general terms of course.

It is quite a habit among Goans to obfuscate any bad news on the medical front, 
specially when it relates to major illnesses.

Everyone knows that cancer can and will strike at random, at all ages and 
mostly little is known about the reasons.

It’s not a shame or some deficiency on one’s part to get cancer or heart 
problems and yet Goans are noted (in my experience) to deny it until it can be 
denied no longer.

So lung cancer gets described as bronchitis or congestion, pancreatic cancer as 
indigestion, heart attacks requiring quadruple bypass as minor heart problems. 
It’s almost as if heart attacks, cancers and strokes are unlucky words never to 
be mouthed until it cannot be avoided.

As a rider, there is this other Goan habit of trying to soft-pillow or entirely 
avoid telling kin of the passing away of some relative. For example there are 
two brothers, now in late seventies, who live in say Goa and Europe 
respectively. They have not been talking to each other for 25 years or more. 
Yet when the brother in Europe dies, in Goa they will refuse to tell the other 
brother of the news on the grounds that he will “get a shock”. I have had more 
than my share of ridiculous examples like this.

Wonder whether this is true of other Indians or Asians as well. I have not come 
across this ‘bad news phobia’ among Europeans or Americans.

The very high-handed and unprecedented move by this autocratic government
to curtail the session of the Goa Legislative Assembly on account of Chief
Minister Manohar Parrikar's illness is very deplorable, uncalled for and a
gross abuse of power. Political bankruptcy and sheer sycophancy at its hilt.

The Government is a collective responsibility and cannot revolve around one
individual. There must be a second in command who can steer it through. The
Chief Minister’s charge and Finance portfolio can surely be handed over to
the next Senior most Minister. The State cannot be put in ICU or on a
ventilator for the sake of one individual. Goa and governance has to move
on and nobody is indispensible. It may be a blessing in disguise and the
dawn of a new era to Save what remains of Goa.

The very serious Mining, Madhei and other issues confronting a currently
sinking Goa must be urgently and extensively debated by the Legislative
Assembly.
