[Goanet] Many social problems ..... communal violence (Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao)

2018-04-09 Thread Devak Argham
On numerous occasions I had the privilege to listen to the various
homilies presented by his highness Archbishop Felipe Neri Ferrao.

He doesn't mince words which flow clearly. He doesn't pause to think
what next to say. Lucid in his speech and to the point, without any
notes in hand is how the Archbishop presents his views relevant to the
occasion.

One finds the views odd or irrelevant when not in the same environment.!

By the way I would also like to point out to the below verses from the Bible :

1 Chronicles 16:22 - Saying, “Touch not my anointed ones, do my
prophets no harm!”

Psalm 105:14-15 - He allowed no one to oppress them; he rebuked kings
on their account, saying, “Touch not my anointed ones, do my prophets
no harm!”

God himself did not immediately punish Aaron his annointed priest.
Deuteronomy 32:35 says, Vengeance is Mine,.

An extremely funny telemarketing call from a CSR in Bombay trying to sell an

The farmer tells her to get her company to offer a course teaching his kids
farming instead.

He says his kids already enrolled in Poona and Bombay for computer courses but
got no jobs after that.

The illiterate farmer is quite savvy and gets the upper hand over the city girl.

The quote is also frequently attributed to Kenyatta. Kenyatta did not express
the idea either. In fact, Kenyatta was one of the biggest land grabbers in

The first mention of the idea came from a German playwright after WWII. Check

One thing is sure. If you want real wealth, buy land and live on it.

Many social problems exist in India, but, above all, is the
rising communal violence

Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao
archbp...@gmail.com

As I listened to the various speakers [from different faiths
and sections of our society], Mahatma Gandhi's description of
the seven deadly social sins came to my mind. The Father of
the Nation named these as the seven deadly sins: "Wealth
Without Work; Pleasure Without Conscience; Knowledge Without
Character; Commerce Without Morality (or, rather, Business
without Ethics); Science Without Humanity; Religion Without
Sacrifice; and Politics Without Principle."

I thank the speakers for the passion and love for the
country with which they delivered their speeches. Indeed,
they have highlighted that our beloved country is built on
diversity, tolerance and communal harmony and that the only
way it can continue to exist and progress is not simply by
maintaining these time-tested values, but, in fact, by
proactively fostering and strengthening these attitudes among
the people of India, across the divides of religion, creed,
region or language.

We must admit that the 'deadly social sins' mentioned by the
great Mahatma are to be found in countries all over the world
and quite pronouncedly in our own, beloved India.

There are many social problems existing in our
society which stand as stumbling blocks in the way
  to development: poverty, unemployment, pollution,
  regionalism, illiteracy, criminality, violence
against women, drug trafficking, child marriage,
corruption and various other challenges that are
posing a threat to the nation's development and
unity. But above all these social menaces, the
rising communal violence in India is emerging to be
the most dangerous of all social distrusts.

Mahatma Gandhi realized the damage which communalism could
cause and attended to the problem with the seriousness it
demanded. He regarded the abolition of communal disharmony
and the ensuing Hindu-Muslim unity as the essential
pre-requisite for the Swaraj.

Right from his early public life, Gandhi kept alive the idea
of communal unity. He lived in South Africa for twenty years
in the midst of Muslims, who treated him as a member of the
family. Realizing the lack of unity between Hindus and
'Mussalmans' in South Africa, he said, "I had realized early
enough in South Africa that there was no genuine friendship
between the Hindus and the Mussalmans. I never missed a
single opportunity to remove the obstacles in the way of
unity" (M K Gandhi, An Autobiography or the Story of My
Experiments with Truth, Navajivan Publishing House,
Ahmedabad, 1927, p. 341).

Our dear Pope Francis has placed culture in a very beautiful
light: "A culture is strengthened by its openness and its
exchange of views with other cultures, as long as it has a
clear and mature awareness of its own principles and values.
I, therefore, encourage professors and students to experience
the University as an environment of true dialogue, which
neither flattens nor intensifies diversity but opens to
a constructive comparison. We are called to understand and
appreciate the values of others, overcoming the temptation of
indifference and fear. Never be afraid of an encounter, of
dialogue, of debate!" (Address of Pope Francis to "Roma Tre"
University, February 17, 2017).

Down the ages, India has been a rich and beautiful
mosaic, a confluence of many religions, races,
tribes and ethnic communities, having different
cultures, languages, scripts, customs, cuisine and
living styles, with very long ancient historical
  traditions. Here Hindus, Muslims, Christians,
Buddhists, Jains, tribals, Jews and men and women
of every religion, language, belief and conviction
have, to a large extent, lived together in
  exemplary harmony and tolerance.

The world looks with awe at India's wonderfully diverse and
plural society. The composite culture of India owes its
existence not to one single community, race, tribe or
religion, but to an intricate collage of varied influences,
resulting in a way of life that has been crafted by an
intermingling of cultures and peoples over the centuries.

May I use the words of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, who, in
his poetic style, tells us: "The highest education is that
which does not merely give us information but makes our life
in harmony with all existence. Melody and harmony are like
lines and colours in pictures. A simple linear picture may be
completely beautiful; the introduction of colour may make it
vague and insignificant. Yet colour may, by combination with
lines, create great pictures, as long as it does not smother
and destroy their value. Life’s errors cry for the merciful
beauty that can modulate their isolation into a harmony with
the whole ... Life is given to us, we earn it by giving it.

[Goanet] ENFORCING TRAFFIC DISCIPLINE

2018-04-09 Thread John Eric Gomes
EFFORTS TO ENFORCE TRAFFIC DISCIPLINE
At the Ocoqueiro traffic lights junction, one day I observed many traffic
police personnel hanging around two lady police officers busy confiscating two
liscenses. They were busy with plenty of paper work near their vehicle parked
next to the PWD pumping station whilst on the other sides, traffic were merrily
breaking the rules! I asked some of the police personnel why they are watching
the indiscipline and instead of hanging around chatting, not taking some
action. They said tell the engrossed in paper work women cops. I had time, so
waited patiently for about 10 minutes whilst they were busy explainning
procedures to two defaulters, how to recover liscence, talking on the mobile,
obtainning signatures etc! I patiently asked one of them why not send someone
to check traffic violations whilst they were busy and she said yes, but did
nothing! I cannot understand why basics are not done; for example paint the
stop line which is almost invisible, raise the wornout speedbreaker, also
highlight the Zebra crossing, use prevention better than cure methods to pull
up defaulters. Police presence at the junction, I notice daily on my walks, do
absolutely nothing to check blatant violations. Two wheelers breaking the red
light or crossing against the flow/ wrong side is common, no traffic slowing
down on coming of yellow light etc are rampant! So are daily violations on the
bridges going unchecked. Discipline must flow from top down, behavior of VIPs,
politicians, police personnel, enforcing the law and without fear or favor? Not
being done!

Lorna is undoubtedly a crowd-puller. I suppose that could be the main reason to

some profit and, at the same time, help promote young talent. Bringing rising
stars from Goa will help them get exposure in the Goan diaspora.Yesterday, I
listened to Tatum's tribute song to her parents, Ophelia and Bab Peter. I was
noved by the lyrics and the voice. I have heard her for the first time and I
hope ti download the album. Maybe Goans in Goa and Mumbai heard her, but giving
such a talented singer an opportinity to show her singing power to Toronto

Re: [Goanet] Lorna to sing at Viva Goa

2018-04-09 Thread Eugene Correia
To add further to the discussion, Lorna was brought here by Radio Mango.
Yeah, people here are obviously keen to get here so that people, largley
over-50, come for the show. I doubt the youngsters show up, because most of
them don't speak nor understand Konkani. I have friends whose children
spoke good Konkani when they migrated here but now they have forgotten.
They understand little.
At Viva Goa, one can see older people swinging on the grass to Konkani
music. If I am correct, a Lorna show organized by one African Goan, who was
acting on Konkani stage earlier but is missing on stage now, though his
Konkani was a disgrace, had a good show and did well.
Lorna is still a powerful voice and can still cast a spell on people. I
don't know if she or someone else don't want her to give up opportunities
of making money through her. She sang at the Spirit of Goa held recently in
Goa. Yes, the older people will be enchanted and thrilled to hear her. I
read reports on the Spirit of Goa, and I think it gave at least 20
youngsters to show their singing talent.
If Goa wants to promote culture, one way is to give youngsters a chance,
be it from Goa or anywhere from the Goan diaspora. This will help in the
flowering of talent and the flourishing of Konkani. GOA held classes in
Konkani and one of the teahers was Olav, a tiartist and former GOA
executive. When I met him at the interval of the showing of Que Sera Sera
movie, I joked with him if I can attend the classes. He said they were full
and I could join next year. I think he caught my intention as he gave a big
smile.
At the convention organized by the Goanetters here, there was Konkani
classes and the person (forget the name) was provident tips on
conversational konkani. I just sat there in silence, though meeting him
after the class was interesting. The GOA does seem to have good intention
to help young Goans and non-speakers of Konkani to learn the language. I
don't know how many signed up for the recent classes.
I think it was at Viva Goa that the president of GOA said the association
wants to help Konkani. Just some months later it sponsored the Sammy
Tavares show which was done in GOA's name but allegedly done privately by
the president and the then culture direct, Marshal Fernandes. I wrote about
it in GOAN REVIEW and there has been no denial from the GOA. This sudden
show put Raymond Menezes, popularly known Menezes Jr., at a disadvantage.
He canceled his tiartr as he thought that people will not come twice in a
year to see Konkani shows and that he may run at a loss. In my piece I said
that the GOA president said Konkani but is this the way to ruin a seasoned
tiatrist's show. It was Raymond's turn to host a show, as the three tiartr
groups in Toronto take turns with each holding in one year. Though this is
unwritten agreement, and Marshal, being one who has his own group, knows
about it.
Thereafter, GOA settled the issue with Raymond and helped him with a letter
saying it was sponsorship his show. The letter was given to Raymond to help
him get discount on the hall rates, as it's usually given to non-profit
organisations. This is a clear breach of GOA rules, as the body cannot give
such letters to private individuals. Besides, Raymond was not even a member
of GOA as of that date, and probably not till now.
Raymond will present his Nach Goemkara comedy skit which his flyer says is
"supported by GOA", or words to that effect. I saw the flyer but don't have
a copy with me to check it.

Lot more to say, but I will stop here.

[Goanet] Regional Plan, Destruction and Distracting Tactics!

2018-04-09 Thread Joao Barros-Pereira
The Regional Plan issue is heating up, and is even hotter than the hot
weather in March. Can we Goan survive the vagaries of nature and the
folly and greed of our politicians?

Now is fingerprinting week when every politician has more than ten
fingers. Accusations and counter-accusations are flying hither and
thither and bring tidings darker than the crows which fly in my
backyard. Goa, where are you going?

It is time to drop personal attacks. Politicians claim panchas and
sarpanchas are not exactly saints. No one thinks they are, and least,
the panchas themselves. No Goan needs to be convinced. And, then,
there is the war among the politicians themselves, pointing ten and
more fingers at each other. All this leaves us with a sense of deja
vu. Haven't we seen and heard all this before? Tell us something new!

Not a word about the 73rd and 74th amendments which Goans want
desperately because with it all the hype of peoples' participation is
nothing less or more than smoke and mirrors. Politicians say, people
of Goa, tell us your dreams and suggestions, we will listen carefully,
and fear not, you will have a participatory role in the shaping of the
Regional Plan. Of course, this is all fiction as the people will tell
them what they think which will enter though the right ear and
immediately out the left! The politicians will overrule what the
people want and there is nothing the people can do about it. Now, this
is a perfect example of adding insult to injury!

The only way out of this kali yuga is to arm the people with powers
which they can use to defend themselves against the politicians, and
this can only be the 73rd and 74 amendments to the constitution which
clearly empowers the people. All else is no more than fairy stories,
and the people of Goa have grown up and no longer believe in Santa
Claus.

Are we building apartments for the whole world to settle in Goa?
Maybe, even for aliens? There are lakhs of apartments which are empty!
The scenario is ridiculous, and the lies of the politicians are of an
embarrassingly low quality and most unlikely to fool even a ten year
old child. A sad commentary on the level of intelligence and education
of our representatives.
