[Goanet] Envy a dream

2019-01-07 Thread Nelson Lopes
Envy a dream

Admiration is sublime, ,

Desires are selfless

 Attracted by attributes

 Passion is subdued,

Intention is pure,

 Aim not possess or own

 Win your attention

Convey feelings

Deep emotions from within

Offered hand of friendship

Response vague and cold

Innocently ignored

,Confused about motives

Wishes evaporate

The gaze is blank

A maze of confusion,

Harbouring ego of pride

Bubble of personal worth.

Prick of reality will burst,

Wisdom, keep emotions aside

Experience, a sign of wise

Patiently wait the moment.

Meet at junction of friendship

Efforts are not in vain.

Torture of endurance worth the pain

Time is neither elastic nor stationary

Decision of acceptance

Smoothen indecision of rejection,

 Wise to move on

Ease burden, the void of emptiness

Loneliness feeling is agony

The spark of light did not ignite

To set the hearts on fire,

A volcano of love that lies dormant

Wonder if it will ever erupt

Trying is not a sin,

Failed attempts to win

A treasure of yearning

Lies buried deep in my heart

Committed to silence of dead, we part

[Goanet] State responsibilty towards mining

2019-01-07 Thread Nelson Lopes
State responsibility towards mining

The natural wealth is exhaustible. How many more years can it last? It has
to end sooner or later. Govt has exploited to hilt to get rich quickly,
Many actors joined the race illegally for stake in mining pie. The Dempo`s
were wise to entice Vedanta to cough up over 6000 crores and exit before
sunset .Vedanta was in tearing hurry to recover the expenditure with
profits. This over exploitation in a short time resulted in traffic
congestion, accidents, inconvenience and safety of school children, water
pollution, loss, degradation of agriculture lands, and lung related health
issues etc The people in mining area were enticed with loans to purchase
one or two trucks by every family, assured business in transportation and
surety for loans . Similarly investments in barges was seen as lucrative
too. Various doles were distributed regularly to silence their resistance.
Health doles due to pollution in every family. New leaders sprung up
creating outrageous demands .The drivers were hired from outside the state
and did not generate self employment .Garages were mostly manned by
outsiders too .Additional revenue generated by some shops, tea stalls,
rentals etc was not significant and dried up after stoppage of mining .The
people in the area became addicted to vices, frugal life styles with easy
income with no sustenance plan when income dried up, due sudden stoppage of
mining activity. There was crisis of payment of installments on trucks,
barges etc The State Govt to curb the rising anger of desperation still
promises to resume mining with no sign of action. To pacify momentarily
offered relaxation of loan payment, but not provided utilization of idle
trucks and barges and drivers. Fortunately many such outsiders fled from
the state. The responsibility to rehabilitate fell on the shoulders of
overburdened state and not mine owners Some doles were also extended to buy
silence. The agitation is ongoing and politics of votes and appeasement
continues unabated .When there is shutdown of mines how can state own
responsibility .If tourism suffers the same fate of recession will the Govt
waive off loans of hotels, transport industries, help drivers, tour guides
etc? What is state of dry dock retrenched employees ? The Govt is not
showing any sympathy towards them even to recover dues from employees

The State should provide employment by promoting industries, revive
traditional agriculture, and encourage self employment, provide water for
irrigation and drinking. It is reported that school children have no
transport facility that existed earlier . The people in the area should
have taken calculated risk in business venture of transportation and owning
trucks. It was their personal decision not influenced , motivated by State

The state ad central Govt has earned large amounts by way of royalty, but
thought nothing of ploughing back some revenue towards meeting this
eventuality .The state too merrily gulped down mining revenues with gay
abandon and imagined it to be milking cow forever. Mere assurances other
than legislation can resume mining and that remains an illusion under
promises, strikes, meetings without outcomes. If and when it does resume
the same predicament will follow after sometime once again

Another fiasco of lack of foresight was starting of mining degree Course at
the fag end of closing ,slowing down of industry. It has been closed
leaving the students in lurch and unemployed .The Govt, similarly paying
doles to trawler owners due to ban on fishing .They enjoy subsidy on boats,
nets, fuel with no specific benefits to the consumers. The policies of Govt
are warped sometimes defies logic of rationalization

People must make their own decisions factoring all such eventualities to
sustain revenues and plan for a rainy day.

[Goanet] MINING DEPENDANTS ON THE WRONG TRACK

2019-01-07 Thread Aires Rodrigues
One fails to understand why the Goa Mining dependants have been agitating
infront of the residence of PWD Minister Sudin Dhavlikar. They should be
infact marching to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar who is also the Minister
of Mines and hold him solely accountable for the mining mess.

The BJP and its absolutely impotent three Goa Parliamentarians have been
brazenly fooling the Mining dependants with a load of cock and bull
unrealistic assurances. It is intriguing that the leaders of the Mining
dependants are allowing themselves to be taken for a ride and that too for
so long. So now burying the deceitful BJP under the Mining rubble may be
the only way Forward.

GFA U-14 LEAGUE
Goan FC win GFA U-14 Bardez zone
Goan Football Club emerged winner of the Goa Football Association U-14
League registering a fluent 4-1 win over Dunes Sports Club at Duler
Stadium, Mapusa, on Monday.
In an evenly contested first session, Goan FC had to work hard in
finding the breakthrough which they managed to get in the 13th minute
through Rohan Mangaoknkar. But Dunes Sports Club weren’t the side to
give up as they kept on pressing to get the leveller and successfully
equalised in the 22nd minute through Aryan Vast. The teams were engaged
in more of a midfield battle in the remaining half of the play.
Post lemon break, Goan FC, taking advantage of their endurance and
stamina, dictated terms over their rivals and enjoyed better ball
possession.
Clison Furtado gave Goan FC the lead once again in the 38th minute
before completing his brace at the hour mark and taking the game beyond
Dunes SC reach.
The energetic Goan FC were never going to settle for two goals cushion
as they pinned their opponents in the rival half and soon within next
four minutes further inflated their lead to three as Eden Rodrigues
netted the team’s fourth goal.

GFA SECOND DIVISION LEAGUE
Vagator Parish Youth Sports Club registered a comfortable 5-2 win over
Holy Cross Sports Club Arambol in the Goa Football Association Second
Division League match played at Poriat ground, on Monday.
In a one sided affair, Vagator had to wait until the 21st minute to take
the lead wherein
Anford Fernandes scored the first in the 21st minute. The winners
dominated the play and soon scored their second through Dyneshwar
Pednekar at the half hour mark before Shubham Gaonkar scored the team’s
third just before the breather.
Crossing over, Holy Cross SC put up a strong fight and managed to pull a
goal back in the 57th minute through Amit Fernandes from the penalty
spot.
But their hopes of any comeback were killed when Pratik Dhargalkar and
Anford Fernandes scored to take the tally to 5-1 in favour of Vagator
Parish Youth. Stepelton Fernandes pulled another goal back for Holy
Cross in the dying minutes of the game.

Salcete Zone
In another match played at Ambelim ground, Sao Jose de Areal Spotrs Club
began their GFA Second Division campaign with an easy 3-0 win against
Mandopa Sporting Club.
The winners led 1-0 at the break as Alvito Moura netted in the 45th
minute. Crossing over Alroy Moniz netted two goals late in the game to
take the final score in Areal’s favour 3-0.
At Dramapur ground, St Sebastiao Union and Nuvem Sports Club played out
a 2-2 draw.
St Sebastiao Union Club took the lead in teh 17th minute through Cannut
Fernandes before Cedar Colaco netted the leveller in the 26th minute as
both the teams walked into the breather 1-1.
Crossing over, Nuvem surged ahead in the 50th minute through John
Barreto but they couldn’t hold on the lead till the very end as Cannut
came with a sublime finish to complete his brace and thus bring his team
back in the game. However, neither sides were able to find the
match-winner till the final whistle.

GFA THIRD DIVISION LEAGUE
Ronit Sports Club came from behind to beat Merces Club in the Goa
Football Association Third Division League played at Taleigao ground, on
Monday.
In a thrilling clash which witnessed a barren first session having
missed easy sitters and also had some great saves, witnessed three
second half goals, much to the delight of the spectators.
Riding on the fan support, Merces Club shot into the lead in the 53rd
minute when an unmarked Vinay Fatarpekar headed in Sohan Phadte’s
perfect corner.
It was predictable that there would be more goals in the game as Ronit
Sports Club played some attacking game with short passes which easily
broke the rival defence.
They soon levelled terms in the 68th minute through Rocky Fernandes.
Just when it looked like the teams would be sharing the points, Ronit SC
scored the match winner as Merces’ Audhut Kalangutkar scored an own goal
in his effort to clear the ball. Ronit SC were rewarded with the much
deserved goal that gave them three vital points.

An audio tape alleging that Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar could
blackmail the Centre on Rafale has caused discontent within the Bharatiya
Janata Party (BJP) members of the state, Indian Express has reported

.

Senior leaders of the state unit of the party admitted to the paper that
while Parrikar is yet to order a probe into the matter even though he has
questioned the authenticity of the tape, the "damage has been done."

   -

"I have asked the Chief Minister to give orders for a probe, involve CID or
any specialised agency. This report has to be made public," Nilesh Cabral,
BJP spokesperson, told the daily. Cabral added that the tape has caused
"political damage" to the party, making the situation "a bit difficult."

"But we are always positive. Things will fall in place," Cabral said.

Echoing his party colleague, former Goa CM and a core committee member of
the BJP, Laxmikant Parsekar, admitted these are "difficult and challenging
times for the BJP."

"It has definitely created confusion in the minds of the people," Parsekar
said. Parsekar has been demanding for a reshuffling in the BJP's state
hierarchy for a long time.

On January 2, ahead of the crucial debate on Rafale in the Lok Sabha, the
Congress released
an
audio tape of Goa’s health minister Vishwajit Rane, in which he purportedly
made the sensational claim about Rafale files "lying" inside Parrikar's
"bedroom." Parrikar had refuted the claim while Rane had called it a
"conspiracy of national interest".

The political situation in Goa has been unstable
for
months, and the BJP has been facing ally troubles and flak from the
Opposition over Parrikar's failing health.
*Disclaimer: Reliance Defence has denied any wrongdoing in the Rafale deal.*

Re: [Goanet] Low-end vs hi-end tourists

2019-01-07 Thread Frederick Noronha
Even the upper middle classes seem to have some fascination for the
up-market tourists, given their spending power (and possibly their class
solidarity too). Not with the unshaven millions, who are seen as having no
right to a holiday anyway.

Some time back, I was myself surprised on reading the first draft of *Fish,
Curry, Rice*, the Claude Alvares-edited report on the state of the Goan
environment, first put together (as a draft) around 1987. The argument
there was that "hippy tourism is kinder to the environment". It was pointed
out that a single five-star (then) consumed as much power as five Goan
villages, for instance! Prior to that, the discourse here largely saw the
Western hippy as somehow morally polluting.

In addition to what you say, Patrice, Goan politicians have also openly
"served" as directors (sometimes owners) of luxury resorts. The generous
government subsidies which were available at one time made this an
"industry" worth defending and sticking one's neck out for. Money makes the
world go round, doesn't it?

[Goanet] Terminal Decline of Goa Tourism (complete version) - ToI 7/1/2019

2019-01-07 Thread V M
https://epaper.timesgroup.com/Olive/ODN/TimesOfIndia/shared/ShowArticle.aspx?doc=TOIGO%2F2019%2F01%2F07=Ar00607=8D3AB54F=text

If the great poet TS Eliot lived in Goa in 2019, he might have written
one of his most famous lines differently, “this is the way tourism
ends, not with a bang but a whimper.” Less than two decades after the
dawn of a new millennium brought unprecedented global attention and
sustained international demand for the still-beautiful beaches, serene
villages and vibrant composite culture of India’s smallest state,
everything lies in shambles under an onslaught of the world’s least
desirable visitors. The devastation is compounded by state
mismanagement and woeful lack of vision. In a few blinks of the eye,
much of what was special about Goa’s tourism brand has been grossly
tarnished.

All is not lost, but stubborn denial is not helping. Last week,
Rajdeep Sardesai faced a firestorm of mindless criticism for tweeting
bald facts, “Goa is witnessing a 30 per cent decline in footfalls of
tourists this year.. High GST on hotels, hiked airfares part of the
problem.. larger issue: has Goa tourism simply failed to move to next
level.. Goa has so much more to offer than a Phuket yet well behind in
tourism.” All this and more is routine understanding in Goa– and this
newspaper has continually led reportage about the growing crisis – yet
ill-informed commentators across the country piled on the knee-jerk
outrage, many citing official data that tourism numbers are booming in
India’s “sunshine state.”

Conspicuously missing in the cacophony was the nuanced reality that
raw aggregates of tourists remain sizable (indeed, too high for
sustainable hospitality) while income plummets ever-downwards, as the
minority of global travellers is repelled by hordes from neighbouring
states. Michael Lobo accurately lamented last week, “Because of this
type of tourists we’re not getting quality tourists. The good tourists
have gone from Goa. If we don’t take corrective steps now, then
tourism in Goa will die a slow death…On New Year’s morning there were
thousands of discarded liquor and beer bottles on the beach stretch
from Candolim to Baga, many of them broken. Because of all those
broken bottles one couldn’t even walk on the beach with shoes. What
kind of tourism is this? Why are we promoting this kind of tourism?”

These are entirely valid questions by the deputy speaker. For years
now, it has been apparent that tourism in Goa has become dangerously
destructive, in the absence of governance, enforcement or limits. Much
of the industry operates with impunity, emboldening cynical operators
to continually push every limit of decency. In this lawless
atmosphere, the fields become parking lots, the roadsides are used as
kitchens and toilets, garbage gets strewn everywhere, and every kind
of illegality flourishes openly. Meanwhile, the government crows over
highly dubious raw numbers – supposedly nearly 8 million visitors in
2017 – instead of focusing on the devastating toll being paid by the
environment, society and culture.

This is the way that tourism ends, but it does not have to happen.
With political will and stakeholder solidarity, recovery is entirely
possible. If the administration simply implemented the existing laws
and regulations, the situation would dramatically improve. An
all-encompassing tourism policy anticipating future challenges is long
overdue. Instead of casino sleaze that drives away families, Goa’s
brand must move towards built and environmental heritage, as well as
the abiding peace and tolerance that has always been its main
attraction. Whatever government investment is available is required to
shore up, protect and preserve these crown jewels of the state’s
global appeal.

At this crucial juncture for Goa tourism, wise heads and trustworthy
hands are required to avert impending doom. Alas, the motley crew in
office does not inspire confidence. Even as the coastline groans under
unprecedented mountains of festering garbage, they have collectively
failed to address beach cleaning. Several ministers have separately
decried the degradation caused by current tourism policies, but all of
them simultaneously support the irresponsible, egregious Mopa “second
airport” project that will permanently prise open the floodgates. It’s
an inherent contradiction, with immense political capital awaiting the
first leader brave enough to break ranks in favour of the genuine
interests of the electorate.

[Goanet] GOA GOVERNMENT JOBS CANNOT BE DOLED OUT BY POLITICIANS

2019-01-07 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Any political interference and manipulation in the selection of government
employees is unacceptable it being very unlawful. Infact the law requires
that the selection, promotion and transfer of all government employees
should be totally insulated from any political machinations whatsoever.

It should be strictly on merit and merit alone should be the sole criteria
in the selection and appointment of every government employee to any post.

After the BJP came to power in 2012 we have seen in Goa thousands being
brazenly recruited into government service with merit thrown to the winds.
It has been a deceitful attempt to create a vote bank while many jobs have
been dished away to the highest bidders. All this is reflecting in the
functioning of the government offices with very incompetent staff having
managed to creep in with the blessings of their political god fathers.

Ironically with crores of rupees being drained on E-Governance the
bureaucracy should have shrunk but has infact been bloating by the day
while only further screwing an already depleted State exchequer.

This would be a fit case for our High Court to take Suo motu cognizance and
order a probe into this absolutely illegal ongoing politically orchestrated
recruitment to government service.
