Regarding the choices to be made, here is a choice that does not bode well for

[Goanet] Nobels, Popes and Grandolfo

2020-04-22 Thread Voznadik Vojem
The list of people who did not win the Nobel Prize is as long as the litany
itself. With that presumption, Grandolfo is assured a place alongside Pope
Pius XII. Overlooking a scenic lake is Papal summer residence, Castel
Gandolfo. The role of Pope Pius XII is well known during the war, when he
sheltered Jews in Castel Gandolfo and in other religious institutions
saving thousand of lives. The path may be long and protracted from the
Citadel of Grandolfo to Castel Gandolfo to the Corridors of power in those
two Nordic countries who bestow the honour, yet it remains alluring,
captivating and deliciously tantalizing.

[Goanet] UK: Good and Sad News – Coronavirus number 19

2020-04-22 Thread MELVYN FERNANDES
UK: Good and Sad News – Coronavirus number 19

Having always maintained that the cream of Goa is in Goa. on Sunday 20 April
2020 the team at Goa Medical College led by 58yr old Dr Edwin Gomes at the
front line declared that Goa State was Covid -19 free, it is the first Indian
state to do so. Over our Global Village there are professionals like Dr
Edwin Gomes committed to bringing this pandemic to conclusion and we wish them
every success. In the UK human trials for the vaccine are expected to start
this Thursday 23 April 2020.

In England, an extension of the lockdown for another three weeks has been
announced and is enforced with heavy fines. Life as we know it has been totally
disrupted with over 800 people dying during a 24 hour period in hospital, the
current total being 17,337 including our people. We are yet to be advised on
the number who have died in our old age care homes or outside the hospital of
Covid-19. Our condolences to their families may their souls rest in peace.

When the pandemic first broke out, there was a rush for food in the London area
and other parts of the UK ,resulting in empty shelves and the shortage of food
particularly milk, pasta, flour and other essential items. There must have
been a sigh of relief amongst greengrocers with the arrival of 28.95 tonnes of
fruit and vegetables on 13 April ferried by Air India.

With nearly all restaurants, pubs and coffee houses closed on government
orders, food delivery wholesalers have had to diversify. One such company is
Natures Choice of Covent Garden featured in London Evening Standard of 2 April
and Goan Voice UK. Its Commercial Director Vernon Mascarenhas ex Mombasa has
seen a boom in their free home delivery service from 16 to more than 1000 a day
in less than two weeks. Facebook and Google are just two of the companies that
have recommended the home delivery service to their employees. What: Fruit and
veg boxes and £15 essentials boxes (eggs, milk, bread). Where: Across London.
Check website for postcode radius area.

The Goan Association in Swindon is voluntary collecting donations of spare
tinned long lasting & dry food which will be distributed to those in need. If
you need or would like to donate food please contact.

You generously offer the Nobel Prize again...you even state that it ""No,
it is not wishful thinking. After much deliberations about Goan Pope we
are moving on"""

This is the second occasion in April that you, after deep consideration,
experience etc of the Nobel Committee wish to bestow on me this
singular honour.

Regrettably you are a bit too late. The Nobel Committee of 5 landed in a
NAVEL Helicopter ..The Chopper was NAVAL alright, but it had a Belly
ButtonI have no idem what happened to the cord. EUREKA Stem Cells to
fight C19.

Any way ..a Party of six descended . on the Open Space near the Church.
The six were attired differently:

One was in a Fake LLAMA Suit, The second one was from .Kazakhstan ..etc
Only two did not seem to have had enough to eat one could be a San from
the Kalahari

I was not here to speak to them. HOWEVER

I fired a broadside, I pointedly reminded them that since they are
considering a certain TRUMPET I cannot share the same dais. BUT they
are free to have a DISCO with him.

What does Abhar Think

[Goanet] LOCKDOWN PARTIALLY LIFTED

2020-04-22 Thread celes fernandes
We hear and observe that vehicles having passengers should have masked and not
seated near the driver.  I hope it will help citizens of this new rule as
vehicles or scooters will have to be modified and redesigned sonner or later to
take more precautions for passengers travelling to avoid corna virus.  Hence
now vehicles, trains airplanes or buses etc., moving on the roads will have to
be redesigned and modified for distancing to avoid threat of corna virus.  This
lockdown I hear people crying from paralysis as movement on roads is restricted.
Hoping almighty God will intervene and bring justice to all people who suffered
from corna virus and who have not suffered corna virus.

[Goanet] RIGHTS OF LABOURERS NEED TO BE PROTECTED

2020-04-22 Thread Aires Rodrigues
While observing social distancing and other COVID-19 protocol, I last week
had a meeting with labour department officers and sought their intervention
to ascertain whether the staff working at our Milroc Complex in Ribandar
were getting all that they are entitled to in accordance with the labour
laws and regulations. Labour Minister Jennifer Monseratte was also kind
enough to direct her officials to expeditiously look into the matter.

Our huge complex where I reside and have an office too, is ably manned by
just 10 employees who include a Supervisor, Plumber cum Electrician,
Gardener and seven sweepers. Many of them have been tirelessly serving us
for over two decades.

Our concern has to always be for especially these daily wage workers. They
must get all that they are at least by law entitled. They deserve our
compassion and there can be no exploitation whatsoever. Bonded labour and
slavery is now history. So also no room for thugs and bullying. These
toiling workers need our care and concern, especially in the current
critical times.

[Goanet] COVID 19 – AN AGGRESSIVE VIRUS THAT IS INFLICTING COLOSSAL PAIN ON THE WHOLE WORLD

2020-04-22 Thread Aires Rodrigues
We have been unbelievably witnessing over the last four months, a raging
pandemic that has struck entire mankind while heartlessly bruising every
corner of the world. This vicious virus has struck ferociously, without
distinguishing between race, religion, colour, caste, language or borders
and brought the entire world to its knees. The rich and famous have fallen
victims to this virus while the poor have also not been spared. The
Doctors, nurses and their support staff have been angels fighting the
dreaded virus on the frontline while many of them have lost their lives in
the line of duty.

After a 14-hour voluntary public curfew on 22 March our country has been on
a lock-down since March 24th but it is going to be a long haul for a
corona-free India to dawn. In something very unprecedented this lock-down
has virtually brought the whole nation to a standstill with Airlines,
Trains and public transport shut except for the service rendered to
repatriate foreign nationals stranded in India.

Schools, Colleges and Universities have had to close their doors. Day to
day governance at Government offices has come to a standstill with even the
Judiciary across the country closing shop except for very urgent cases.

Temples, Churches, Mosques and Gurudwaras have remained out of bounds for
the faithful with people having been unable to pay their final respects to
their beloved departed as the final rites have been restricted to only a
handful of very close family members. Many had to switch to the e-paper
version for news as the print media also bore the brunt.

Having been taught to love our neighbors, in this epidemic we have been
looking at the persons next door with suspicion as possibly infected with
the virus and closed our doors on them. All planned Marriages and family
functions have had to be postponed indefinitely with traditional religious
festivities all cancelled.

The COVID-19 lock-down which has kept the public within their homes has
been very tough on all. It has been dreadful for the old and vulnerable.
The very impoverished and the daily wage workers have been the worst
affected finding food to keep them and their families fed. For many of us
without the social media to kill our time this lock-down would have been a
further nightmare.

In a virtual war like scenario that the entire world is grappling with, one
does not know how and when this war will end. All that we know for now is
that this is fierce and full blown combat without firing a single missile
or bullet. This virus has placed the entire world in an enormous economic
upheaval with millions of jobs gone down the tube. Restoring the Indian
economy will be an uphill and extremely challenging task. In this
current scary scenario with the economies of the world under severe
strain of post-corona virus there are no easy solutions. Very hard times
lie ahead but the blow can be softened with sincere imaginative government
policies and prudent fiscal management to benefit the many, not just the
few.

The debate on how and who initiated this corona virus will go on for times
to come but for those who may be lucky to survive this pandemic they would
have to remain ever indebted for God’s abundant Grace. But life will never
be the same again and our lifestyle will undergo an enormous change. Even
for very emotionally bonded communities, social distancing and wearing of
masks will be a way of life ahead globally.

No matter how unpredictable the road ahead may be or where it may lead us
on this journey of change, may the choices we make reflect our hopes and
not our fears. Where there’s life there’s hope. Let’s all walk tall with
hope in our hearts and carve a tunnel of hope with light at the end of it
through this mountain of darkness.

For many, the lockdown imposed on the state of Goa has provided ample
time (when not worrying about grocery availability) for relaxation and
indulging in hobbies like cooking, writing, and the like.

The sombre situation around the country and indeed the world has also
led to a lot of inner reflection much of which has been finding its
way into poetry, essays, art, etc.

And the many writers from Goa and of Goan origin, under the umbrella
of the Goa Writers group, have also been deep in contemplation during
this time, and have been sharing these varied musings as part of The
Lockdown Journals.

The Goa Writers group, which started in 2005 is a vibrant, diverse,
creative community rooted and connected to the state, but with members
scattered all over the world. It consists of 40 members so far, in
five countries. Apart from conducting workshops in the past, the group
also published the anthology ‘Inside Out: New Writing from Goa’, and
also annually hosts the Goa Arts and Literature Festival in
partnership with International Centre Goa.

“We are very active online, where we share and discuss our writings in
a supportive atmosphere (there are also monthly meetings),” says
writer and member of the Goa Writers group, Vivek Menezes. Immediately
after the lockdown began, says Menezes, it became clear that “there
was a collective outpouring of poetry, stories and essays relevant to
the experience we were all undergoing in our various settings”.

“One of our members, Sheela Jaywant, suggested that we work towards an
e-book. But the idea of immediacy also occurred– people all over Goa,
India and the world are all sharing the same experience, and we
thought our writings were worth sharing even as they came out, to
reaffirm our common humanity, to express solidarity and empathy with
everyone else,” says Menezes.

And ranging from a heart wrenching tale from a hospital room to tales
of humour-filled observations about cooking and shopping from
groceries, the journals provide an interesting overview of myriad
experiences that this lockdown has generated. There are insights into
how the lockdown will affect the unprivileged children in their
learning pursuits, the benefits of introversion, thoughts on working
from home versus working from office, short stories, poetry, and much
more, all of which will have you happily reading post after post,
without break, and eagerly waiting for new entries. Some of the
observations in the writings, you may relate to, others may be
entirely new, but definitely enriching.

While Menezes admits that his role has now become more of a mentoring
one, the team in the forefront of the success of this series of
writing consists of Israeli-American philosopher, presently living in
Divar, Hune Margulies; college professor Alisha Souza; veteran
journalist and school administrator, Sheela Jaywant; Kenya-born Goan
editor now living in South Africa, Jeanne Hromnik; organisational and
leadership consultant, Rachana Patni; and writer Ermelinda Makkimane.
“The site has been built by Ermelinda’s teenaged son, and she
maintains and updates it along with him. They live in Naroa, Divar,”
says Menezes, adding that the site has so far been visited by
thousands of people in over 30 countries already.

“There’s something rather wonderful about this web publication being
‘published’ from the furthest-flung village on an exceedingly rustic
river island without a bridge, in India’s smallest state,” says
Menezes, while hinting that there may be a book of these writings in
the future. “At the moment though it’s been extremely rewarding to get
this publication up, running and rolling. There’s lots for Goa to be
proud of in it, and a tremendous amount of excellent reading!” he
says.

No, it is not wishful thinking. After much deliberations about Goan Pope,
we are moving on. Nobel Committee may bestow the honour to a resident of
Quepem and whole of Goa will rejoice!

[Goanet] Dan Driscoll

2020-04-22 Thread Roland Francis
Dan mentioned on Goanet just before he left Goa for Canada that he was to
return to his home in the Halifax area.

The recent shooting massacre of 23 people by an unhinged Denturist was in a
township about 128 kms from his location.

Toronto.

Hope Dan is doing well in Canada. We don't hear much about him or from him
these days, but I think he keeps track of happenings in Goa. He was a regular
contributor on GN.
Dan if you are reading this, hope you are doing well and please stay safe. Tony
