Argham Bhakt,

Present more meaningful texts. Ex: II Corinthians 4: 8-10; instead of
attempting to convince people about the veracity of God's word. Screw the
veracity! Are you some lapsed Bamon?

Or something on the lines of Jeremiah 6:16.

What are giving choris pau to the chorus?!

Wake up!

[Goanet] Did this article of Domnic appear on Goanet?

2020-06-04 Thread Edward Verdes
I remember back in those years, Domnic Fernandes used to post many articles
on tiatrist singers with their lyrics. The same was also posted or
copied on another
forum Gulf-Goans. I came across one article which was in the Mail Archive of
Gulf Goans, but could not find the archive of Goanet.
The subject of this article is as follows:
Lyrics of Konkani songs by the late JuJu - "SAUD" ani "MHAKA JIENK ZAI"!
https://www.mail-archive.com/gulf-goans@yahoogroups.com/msg02520.html

I posted one of the songs Mhaka Jienk Zai link from youtube in
my facebook group and also added the link with lyrics of late Juju
There was immediate response and producer of the album
informed me that there was a big mistake in this article. The lyrics
and song was sung
by another tiatrist singer Jose Juju Barretto from Navelim who is
still living, and the one
Domnic mentioned in this article is Saxophonist tiatr musician who passed away.
I have now requested Gulf-Goans to remove this article as its misleading.

'Bombay Balchão' Book Review: Jane Borges’s Charming, Funny Ode To The City
Borges’s debut novel has the vinegary, tangy punch of the dish her book is
named after.

Novels set in apartments have a charm of their own because personal
histories are shared—often tangled and mangled—and trivial episodes
manifest as bigger events later on.

The first thing you notice about *Bombay Balchão*, the new Bombay
novel (which I think should be
a genre in itself), is the striking cover design by Mohit Suneja. The
tightly packed buildings, with people milling around in the corridors, took
me back to my pillion musings while stuck in Mumbai traffic, something no
one warned me about when I moved to the city. Peering into dilapidated
buildings with shared corridors and quaint balconies that stood on
roadsides was a hobby and now, I was finally inside one.

Books set in apartments have a charm
of their own because personal histories are shared—often tangled and
mangled—and trivial episodes manifest as bigger events later on. Elif
Shafak’s *The Flea Palace*, set in a decrepit Istanbul building is an
example of eccentric apartment neighbours living a tragicomic life. Closer
to home, Esther David’s *Bombay Brides*, about an Indo-Jewish housing
society in Ahmedabad with matchmaking aunties, dream interpreters, Biblical
kirtans sung in Marathi and dark-skinned brides, has a more histrionic
flavour. In a similar vein, *Bombay Balchão* invites us into Bosco Mansion,
a two-storeyed-six-flats-building in Pope’s Colony in Cavel, a Catholic
neighbourhood in South Bombay.

At the heart of the novel are the Coutinhos, a Goan Catholic family. Among
the elaborate cast are a widow who smuggles hooch to start a successful
business, a recluse who finds solace in a lending library and becomes a
crossword whiz, a single woman who learns to cook in her sixties, a
flirtatious young lady who elopes on the day of her engagement swayed by
the dance moves of a drunk man, an Indian Mrs. Bennett who plots the future
weddings of her kids, and many, *many* more people. Love (and lust)—sudden,
withered, unrequited and reacquired—often cause havoc in the lives of the
residents. There’s uproarious humour—the exorcism of Michael Coutinho over
half-eaten chikkus made me shriek with laughter—Borges says it was the same
for her while writing it. Even the funeral of the Coutinho son-in-law was
more hilarious than mournful, in a way only life in Bombay can be.

Sandwiched between these comical developments are slivers of history that
are a delight to bite into. Borges takes us

[Goanet] MAY CARE AND COMPASSION PREVAIL DURING COVID-19 BLUES

2020-06-04 Thread Aires Rodrigues
It is very appalling and so distressing the manner in which we seem to look
down upon and despise our brothers and sisters suspected of COVID-19 even
if they test negative and also after their full recovery, having tested
positive. We need to respect everyone’s human rights and values as this
unknown virus can strike anyone, anytime and anywhere.

Compassionate leadership and support is the most potent way people can deal
with what feels frightening and overwhelming during the pandemic. Leaders
need to focus compassion on their dealings with people and any measures
that they introduce to stop the spread of the virus and to sustain people
with vital necessities and the basic means of survival. Leaders must also
ensure that they focus compassion on all the brave heroes who as frontline
staff go the extra mile to provide much needed health and care services,
the emergency services, and those that keep our vital supplies flowing.

Let us at all times humbly lead the life of a common man. As the Sufi
mystic Kabir said* “Jakorakhe Sai, maar sake na koi” *(None can harm him
who is looked after by higher Powers). The dedicated prayers and the
abundant love showered by the common men on us is what keeps us going. Life
is a very short voyage, a journey, the end of which we know not. So let’s
live life in humbleness and brotherhood.

In the words of the late Senator Robert Kennedy “Each time a man stands up
for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against
injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other
from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build
a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and
resistance”.

If we are to be a society that believes in Care and Compassion then we need
to ask ourselves, ‘Will we look out for each other, or will we sacrifice
others for personal gain? Will we put the interests of the economy first or
of the wider community? Will our leaders and those empowered to make a
difference rise to the challenge, or play political games? Will we support
each other or remain aloof?’

The coronavirus will test our values as a society just as much as it
continues to test our resilience to its destructive effects. However, in
the end, we will be judged on how well we responded with care and
compassion as a Society.

Remember, this pandemic is a marathon not a sprint and must represent the
turning point for everyone to live in a society where Care and Compassion
prevails.

[Goanet] Goa Sudharop Farm Project

2020-06-04 Thread George Pinto
PRESS RELEASE -

Goa Sudharop in partnership with Mrs. Zita D'Mello, announce the launch of a
3-year project to allow under-privileged Goan women to earn an income by
growing fruit & vegetables on her land in South Goa. This project will be
called the "Goa Sudharop Farm Project" and is the latest initiative Goa
Sudharop has undertaken since its inception 20 years ago in a long line of
various projects, programmes, and events to help Goa and Goans.

Due to the current pandemic situation and the resulting loss of jobs and the
need for locally sourced food, this project attempts to allow under-privileged
Goan women to grow food/produce and earn an income as Goa tries to restore its
neglected agricultural sector and meet its current need.

Mrs Zita Dmello has kindly donated the hire of her land at no cost to Goa
Sudharop from June 1, 2020 to May 31, 2023. Goa Sudharop will provide the
seeds, fertilizers and other expenses. We will engage Goa's leading
horticulturists to consult pro-bono on this project. The food/produce will be
sold in the local farmers market. Almost all the income derived will go to the
under-privileged Goan women and a very small portion will be retained and
reinvested in this project.

Sometimes little girls expect a
bit too much; it takes the
wisdom and the frugality of an
Aunt and a Grandmother to bring
them down to Earth...Such is life!

Pedro Otolini Joaquim Pinto de Carvalho was ripe for
marriage and had to be 'settled down' soon.

He had everything -- an excellent job in the Obras Públicas.
He was 36 years old, but, as his family often pointed out, it
takes time to build a stellar career such as his; he was not
some clerk in the Obras Públicas.

Nobody was in doubt about his lineage; it was impeccable. He
after all belonged to one of those old steeped in traditions
-- Boas Famílias. The grapevine had it that the family was
wealthy, exceedingly so.

Nothing is perfect and there was of course a 'k'(something
that was not right) as the maldosas (gossipers) put it, his
looks did leave a hell lot to be desired... those large ears
belonged to an elephant... the maldosas cackled delightedly.

This is a delicious time for all the ladies in the family,
they are consulted, they are feted, their opinions matter,
this is a task to be taken rather seriously.

'Ilda está filha dos Menezes?' (Ilda this daughter of the
Menezes)

'Qual delas? Elas são cinco.' (Which one of them? They are
five)

'Cinco?' (Five?)

'Sim sei... Não tem muito... Mas a menina é bonita.' (I
know...They don't have much...But the girl is pretty.)

'Ahm...bonita...' (Ahm...pretty)

And they chortle maliciously, a good bank balance wouldn't
hurt anyone, one doesn't come empty handed particularly if
the boy's family is really well to do.

What fun it is to be in this position, searching
for brides, you have such a lovely time. There are
endless lists made, every feature of the 'bride' is
flogged out; beginning with her lineage of course,
her looks, her education, some dishonour in the
  family

'Remember the Girl's father always found drunk in the Bar
Salcete?'

'The Girl's granduncle wasn't so well... Diabetes... no,
no'. The voice drops down a decibel; 'it was Cancro (Cancer)?'

Nothing escapes the eagle eyes of the ladies in the family.

There is a dollop of malice too...

'Just you wait... I will now teach that D. Ilda a lesson...
wasn't she the b@#$%h who ruined my Silvia's proposal, wasn't
she the one who told Fernandinho's Mother... 'Está menina tem um
nariz que enche toda a sua cara?' (This girl has a nose that
covers her entire face?)

All the ladies agreed that it was going to be a cakewalk...
Pedro Otolini was perfect, but for his looks of course.
Anyway, girls in general had been warned. 'Looks do not
matter in the greater scheme of things.'

Sadly, although Pedro Otolini, had everything, nothing seemed
to gel...

Nothing was moving, all eligible girls were politely
reluctant...

The Pinto de Menezes, the Cardosos, the Barbosas had politely
but firmly, as befits families of impeccable lineage,
refused, it was a resounding 'No'.

'Um redondo não'.

Of course they had put it politely,

'A minha filha é muito nova, apenas completou o seu Coleje,
queremos que ela trabalhe ... ' (My daughter is very young,
she has just completed her college, we would like her to
work...)

Desperation was settling in the Pinto Carvalho mansion...

The married sister, Alba, would ask anyone who
would visit her house, 'Conhecem uma boa rapariga
para o meu irmão? É engenheiro... ' (Do you know
of any suitable girl for my brother? He is an
  engineer...)

It was the situation of 'kuslelli masddi' (rotting fish).
Why were the families so reluctant to marry their daughters
to this man who had everything?

Everywhere there was a 'não... '

And then Imelda, a neighbour of the married sister Alba, came
with a proposal from her cousin living in an adjoining State.

The bride was beautiful, tall, slender, well-educated and as
a windfall had excellent Christian values.

So far, although every girl who had been sought was from a
good Catholic family, nobody had even mentioned Christian
values. But there you are, she was ultra-religious...'

The only 'k' if you would consider it a 'k' was that the
family was financially quite strained.

Immediately, the Pinto Carvalhos waived off the dowry...

'All we want is your daughter,' they asserted.

After a slight hesitation, the girl's family
hastily sent a telegram. They were under the false
impression that the groom was besieged by offers
from other girls... 'Helena aceita...,' (Helen
  accepts) the family said.

  This irritated the Pinto Carvalhos.

'Hmmm, 'Helena aceita', indeed,' they all said.

The marriage was set to take place during the holidays, when
all relatives and their children were free to gather for this
extremely festive occasion.

Alba's husband Cosme had returned to Goa from East Africa.
Like many others, Cosme had not wanted to work in Independent
Kenya.

https://www.dhakatribune.com/opinion/op-ed/2020/06/04/blacklivesmatter-beyond-the-hashtag

Tremendous ironies abound in the global outpouring of anger, solidarity and
opportunistic virtue signaling after the pitiless murder of 46-year-old
George Floyd by police officers in Minneapolis ten days ago. Besides the
USA, protests erupted in Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Mexico City,
Montreal, Berlin, London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Lagos, Tel Aviv and many
other cities.

The main reason is sincere revulsion. The world loves African American
culture. From Muhammad Ali to Michael Jackson,Beyoncé to Barack Obama, this
community of just 40 million generates an astonishingly disproportionate
number of our most cherished icons (for context, that many people would
rank only 12th amongst Indian states, between Odisha and Telangana).

Another factor is the appalling figurehead of Donald Trump. Since the 1970s
reign of Idi Amin in Uganda, no world leader has been more universally
reviled or ridiculed. His tone-deaf bungling of this crisis has shocked and
dismayed almost everyone, including in his own administration.

But in the worldwide stampede to condemnation, there’s also shamelessness,
score-settling, and hypocritical posturing.

Earlier this week, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian declared
“black lives matter, the U.S. government [should] protect and safeguard the
legitimate interests of racial minorities.” This is obvious retaliation for
last month’s US Congress sanctioning of China’s crackdown on (mainly
Muslim) Uighurs, Kazakhs and Kyrgyz, with at least one million detained in
Xinjiang “re-education camps.”

Meanwhile, the swift corporate co-opting of the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag
has produced a parade of absurdities, like its use by the American football
team Washington Redskins, which itself uses an overtly racist name and
logos.

Even worse was the social media paean from New York City’s storied
Metropolitan Opera that “there is no place for racism in the arts. [we
stand] with those raising their voices in support of justice and equality.”
Actually, in its 137 years, The Met has never once performed any black
composer’s work.

This is the crux of the matter, which is structural inequality and racism.
While the record of the United States is certainly disgraceful, it’s even
worse in other countries which profiteered in the trans-Atlantic slave
trade: Portugal, Spain, France, Netherlands and the UK. But these
populations remain in conspicuous denial that #BlackLivesMatter amongst
them too, aided and abetted by blinkered education systems.

South Asia has a complicated, and tangential relationship to anti-black
racism. There were few episodes of “chattel slavery” here, with one
exception being my home state of Goa, where markets for African captives
persisted for centuries under the Portuguese. More prevalent was bonded
servitude of labourers, soldiers and administrators, which sometimes
resulted in elites like the 15th century “Habshi Sultans” of Bengal.

It should be noted that early migrants from the subcontinent to the West
were categorized as black. MIT scholar Vivek Bald’s outstanding *Bengali
Harlem and the Lost Histories of South Asia *recalls “Bengali Muslims
quietly became part of some of America’s most iconic neighborhoods of
color, from Tremé in New Orleans to Detroit’s Black Bottom, from West
Baltimore to Harlem.”

There’s a strong possibility one of these pioneers remade himself into
Wallace Fard Muhammad, who founded the Nation of Islam (Malcolm X was its
most famous spokesman.)

More to the point, a couple of days ago, the great musician-activist-author
(and Magsaysay Award winner) TM Krishna posted on Twitter:
‪#BlackLivesMatter‪, #MuslimLivesMatter, #DalitLivesMatter,
#WomensLivesMatter, #MinorityLivesMatter, #AdivasiLivesMatter.

Pressed to add #AllLivesMatter he refused (that exchange has since been
deleted) saying the elision would have obviated the message.

Of course all lives matter, but that’s irrelevant to systemic
discrimination, and Krishna is entirely correct that South Asian societies
nurture multiple bigotries. Our liberation struggles inspired the world –
including America’s civil rights movement – but left oppressive colonial
police state frameworks intact and functioning

Thus the glaring dissonance when Indians complain about American racism,
while remaining silent about the continuing humanitarian catastrophe
amongst distressed workers, widespread police atrocities against
protestors, and the military clampdown in Kashmir which includes the
longest-ever communications blackout ever imposed in democracy.

Yet, we should also note that changes of heart rarely occur in tsunami
waves, while performative symbolism is always inherently suspect. This is
why the American leaders now lining up to “take a knee” – after condemning
the immensely dignified Colin Kaepernick for years for doing the same thing
- are transparently ridiculous, and prime minister Narendra Modi’s showy

Souparno Banerjee, CSE

How shall we live after lockdown ends? Will we go back to the
business-asusual? Smog-encased cities where breathing becomes an
ordeal. Choked roads where mobility is nothing but a word.
Sludge-filled rivers and lakes… Or can we look forward to a more
sustainable, cleaner, greener existence?

On World Environment Day, two of India’s foremost environmental
thinkers lay down a blueprint for a world where we may continue to see
smog-less, clear skies and clean water and air.

Join us on this World Environment Day.

[Goanet] George Floyd the martyr

2020-06-04 Thread Nelson Lopes
GEORGE FLOYD MARTYR

USA has been championing the cause of human rights all over the world .For
the first time the protest on killing of George Floyd has drawn sympathy
from across the Nations and sportsmen to the brutal killing. The whole of
USA is engulfed in flames , riots and protests are unparalleled. The
President remarks have only added fuel to fire and was sheltered in bunker
for self-protection. Floyd was unarmed ,neither violent or behaviour
threatening and crowd and videos prove it. The murder was of white
supremacy and sadistic pleasure. Earlier an elderly Indian as a tourists
was subjected to similar pin down and is now paralyzed for life. For nine
minutes his neck and back compressed ,as he pleaded that he could not
breathe and finally succumbed to asphyxiation .What was his crime that
officers had the gumption to take law into their own hands against a
hapless citizen. ?The other officers stood in mute silence as abettors and
accessories to the crime of murder and cannot go scot free as innocent

Too long the African Americans are subject of hate crime of extreme racism
and in many such past incidents have not received justice, so that such
acts continue with impunity. USA President was assassinated in attempt to
bestow civil liberties. Another African American served as the President of
USA lately .The movements by Martin Luther King has had little impact.
Nelson Mandella has dismantled apartheid in South America but it has not
improved the climate of racism in USA .African Americans are confined to
certain places, institutions and work preferences. The hate is ingrained in
psyche of the population. Their schools are segrated though law does not
encourage this practice. Inter marriages between whites and African
American are a sign of softening stands of integrating with community. The
violent protests, riots are fall out of inhuman treatment and all sections
of Americans want to stop the scourge of discriminations, racism culture.
Many African Americans today are Mayors, Governors, law makers holding
high offices in private and Government and hence their lives and social
participation is on the rise .USA has won laurels through their sportsmen
,Musicians military personnel and yet do not receive human rights justice
and acceptance on par with USA citizens. Decades of slavery might have
ended, but even in this century their life of dignity is denied by subtle
means. Many countries racism exists in different forms .The Nazis and
Hitler used Nationalism, others use caste system ,Pseudo Nationalism and
patriotism in disguise to same effect.

The Martyrdom of George Floyd must serve as barometer to end the social
injustices of racism against African Americans once and for all .The review
of law , deterrent punishment must put an end to these inhuman barbaric
practices by those who are supposed to provide protection .Merely
sacking one officer and suspension of others will not pacify and soothe the
fraying tempers anymore The death of GEORGE FLOYD must not go in vain and
must serve as flag post to end racism in USA once and for all when USA is
championing the human rights all over the world and has different
yardsticks in its own background
