Deuteronomy 8:17-19
===

17 Otherwise, you might say in your heart,“It is my own power and the
strength of my own hand that has got me this wealth.”

18 Remember then the LORD, your God, for he is the one who gives you the
power to get wealth, by fulfilling, as he has now done, the covenant he
swore to your ancestors.

19 But if you do forget the LORD, your God, and go after other gods,
serving and bowing down to them, I bear witness to you this day that you
will perish utterly.

[Goanet] Abu Dhabi Is Swallowing Dubai

2020-06-05 Thread Roland Francis
This means that after an exhaustive dressing down by the Abu Dhabi ruler of the
Dubai ruler, they have decided that what belongs to Dubai now belongs to Abu
Dhabi.

I imagine the meeting to have gone like this:

MBZ (Ruler of Abu Dhabi): Yes Mohammed, what do you need from me?

MBR (Ruler of Dubai): the world is crumbling on my Emirate oh Sheikh.

MBZ: Isn’t that what you told me in 2009 and borrowed 10 billion dollars from
me which you haven’t paid back.

MBR: But we have rolled over the loan ya Sheikh! And we re-named the Burj Dubai
after Khalifa your elder brother.

MBZ: That’s not the same as re-paying.

MBR: I am in dire straits now and I need another loan. Dubai will bounce back
as we usually do but only with the help of more money.

MBZ: Whats this nonsense about you imprisoning Laitifa and Shamsa and this
stink about the English Court case with Haiya?

MBR: Insolent women ya Sheikh! Don’t know their place like our traditional
tribal women folk.

MBZ: Don’t you know that Haiya’s brother the Jordan King went to school with me
and is my good friend ever since? Don’t you think he would have called me and
complained about you?

MBR: But you and me are closer and more bound together my brother-in-law.

MBZ: Be that as it may. Isn’t my 10 billion dollar loan to you in 2009 an
acknowledgment of that. I cannot give you any more. You are reckless, have
utterly lofty ambitions, take undue risks and want to prove you are better than
me. All at my cost.

MBZ continues: I am ready to save your face once more, but this time it’s
different. You’ll have to transfer all your emirate’s assets, mortgaged to the
hilt that they are, to a joint ownership and my sovereign fund will lend you
against that. But I’ll have to warn you. If you don’t meet the repayment
conditions, you will lose them all.

Now Reader, please continue;

From a recent Reuters report:

DUBAI/LONDON (Reuters) - The governments of Abu Dhabi and Dubai are discussing
ways to prop up Dubai's economy by linking up assets in the two emirates, with
Abu Dhabi's state fund Mubadala likely to play a key role in any deal, three
sources familiar with the matter said.

Some economic sectors have come to a near standstill in Dubai during the
coronavirus outbreak, and it faces its most severe downturn since a 2009 debt
crisis. It lacks the oil wealth of Abu Dhabi to cushion the blow.

Abu Dhabi bailed out Dubai after the 2009 crisis with a $10 billion government
loan, which was subsequently rolled over, and $10 billion in bonds that Dubai
issued to the central bank.

One of the sources said any support from Abu Dhabi agreed now would be
"orchestrated through mergers of assets where Abu Dhabi and Dubai compete
directly or where they have joint ownerships".

"The most likely deal to happen in the near term is a merger of the local stock
markets," the source said, adding that bank mergers were also possible.

A second source confirmed the talks and said Mubadala, which manages around
$230 billion in assets, would make "a big move into Dubai", but gave no details.

Mubadala declined comment. Abu Dhabi did not respond to requests for comment on
the talks.

The Dubai media office said on its official Twitter account late on Friday that
Dubai denied being in talks with Abu Dhabi for support from Mubadala.

The two emirates have a quiet rivalry. Dubai has developed quickly to become
the Middle East's tourism, trade and business hub, while Abu Dhabi is the UAE's
political capital because of its size and immense oil wealth. The consolidation
of political power in Abu Dhabi began with the 2009 bailout.

The first source said talks were happening in an "elegant way," without the
appearance of a direct bailout.

The UAE said on Wednesday it would review the structure and size of its
government to make it "more agile and flexible".

"We may merge ministries and alter bodies. We will make changes," UAE Vice
President Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, who is also ruler of Dubai,
said following three days of virtual meetings on the country's post-coronavirus
strategy.

A third source said Mubadala was likely to be involved "at some stage" because
the state fund was always involved whenever there was consolidation between the
two emirates in the past.

STRATEGIC ASSETS

Mergers took place after Abu Dhabi bailed out Dubai following the 2009 crisis,
during which Dubai's property market crashed, almost forcing some state-linked
firms to default on billions of dollars of debt.

The UAE merged Dubai and Abu Dhabi aluminium firms to create Emirates Global
Aluminium, held jointly by Mubadala and the Investment Corporation of Dubai.

"You have already seen a pattern of mergers and this will now accelerate," the
first source said. "Essentially these bailouts will be engineered by having Abu
Dhabi taking stakes in strategic assets owned by Dubai. It will happen over
time."

London-based Capital Economics has said Dubai is the most vulnerable

[Goanet] WHAT REMAINS OF GOA NEEDS TO BE SALVAGED

2020-06-05 Thread Aires Rodrigues
On 5th June being World Environment Day let us hope we have all firmly
resolved that each one of us does our share in protecting
Goa’s environment from further devastation.

As the Government has been ruthlessly expediting the degradation of
our environment, let us vow to expose the current political trash while
also not sparing those government officials who are conniving and colluding
with their rabid political masters in the rampant destruction of Goa.

It is so very appalling that even the current pandemic has not deterred the
rampant hill cutting and land filling of low lying fields going on across
Goa with political patronage with the authorities continuing to be mere
spectators to all this blatant land use violations. The concretization of
once green, lush and peaceful villages and towns without proper and
adequate infrastructure or respect for the environment is unacceptable and
destructive. It reduces the quality of the air we breathe. It destroys
thousands of plant and animal species and significantly increases air and
noise pollution.

Where our politicians and government officials have consistently and
blatantly failed us and our environment with disastrous consequences on
climate and nature, the Global Pandemic has in a small way come to our
rescue. The air is cleaner, and breathing is easier, birds and other
wildlife are showing signs of revival and hitherto hidden structures due to
smog and fog have become more visible.

Pope Francis in his encyclical ‘Laudato Si’ correctly highlights and warns
each and every one of us of the effects of the escalating environmental
destruction and its effects on climate and pollution. He laments how the
exposure to atmospheric pollutants produces a broad spectrum of health
hazards and causes millions of premature deaths. He urges us to all work
together to protect our planet.

We owe it to posterity to Save the remains of Goa by conserving
the Environment. Protect our environment for our children’s tomorrow. We
do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our
children.

[Goanet] Sanitisers have risks and successes

2020-06-05 Thread Nelson Lopes

Safety of use of sanitisers. check for yourself
It is one commodity that is wudely marketed and considered as panacea for all
viruses , which is not true , just as cant use same soap to wash all laundry.
It has its risks and limited success and entirely relying on it is not
desirable .Well it appears to work against covid if it contains 60-80.
percent alcohol. Some have tried to satiate their appetite for alcohol can be
dangerous act .Sanitiser is not best bet to avoid contagion without masks,
social distance and avoiding crowds.
Alcohol based sanitisers constant use absorb moisture leading to dry, hard
and wrinkled skin .Sanitisers not used to disinfect masks as gases trapped in
cloth can lead to nausea etc
It is not guaranteed against greasy hands and maygather more viruses.
Alcohol sanitisers can be ingested when eating food without washing . Scented
sanitisers are a selling proposition but chemicals are not safe
In close proximity to fire causes burns. Leakage in cars if not tightly secures
is susceptible to flames as a gaseous chamber can spark of fire
Alcohol sanitisers when ingested by children can be harmful in adult stage
causing physical and genetic metabolic complications
Sanitisers use Triclosan which is an ingredients of antiseptic and pesticides
which is of doubtful safety harming thyroid, liver and muscles

Best is soap and water though sanitisers have their limited effect with risks
Mask and social distance, avoiding groups can limit contagion

IT is interesting to note that a writer writes that an umbrella can
maintain social distancing especially when people are standing in queue or
when there are no marks existing near the shops. Tomorrow some other writer
will say a stick from a disable person can also maintain for social
distancing etc etc. And the papers are publishing it whereas important
letters are not being accepted either the contents are political or not
well expressed by a writer. This is true I feel that these writers who are

Dear Friend,

This nice-sounding year 2020 is hardly in its halfway stage but is
already becoming a defining year of sorts in our lives. The Covid-19
pandemic is the deadliest outbreak in our living memory. The world has
neither seen such a widespread shut down in mobility nor witnessed
such a sudden economic slump.

As we are trying to limp back to the new normal, this annual
publication of Down to Earth captures the past year and gives insights
for the future. This is the fifth year of the “In Figures”series,
and in such a short time, this annual report has successfully used
numbers to make a public impact.

The incisive factsheets covered in the series over the years have made
headlines, and some were even used for raising related questions in
the Parliament. This has been the rationale behind this unique “In
Figures” Annual series: to let the data ask the right questions. The
need for data/questions has become even more pertinent today.

 Focus of this book is:

State of the States: Rankings on SDGs – the best and the worst
States in each of the 16 monitored SDGs, Forests, Wastelands,
Livestock, Groundwater Development, Employment.

Covid-19: Economy, Job-loss, Food Security, Poverty, Displacement

Table of Contents:

 Migration; Agriculture and land; Forest and wildlife; Climate change;
Water and rivers; Waste; Air pollution; Livestock; Housing;
Employment; Energy.

[Goanet] Renaming India Bharat

2020-06-05 Thread Eddie D'Sa
I am not surprised that John Gomes was disturbed by some nationalist attempt to
rename India Bharat.
This name ‘Bharat’ taken from the hero of a Hindu epic may appease the Hindu
majority but mean nothing to the minorities (some 200m Muslims, Christians).
This lack of sensitivity to non-Hindu sentiment is characteristic of the
BJPwalas & their coarse leader Modi.
When Hindu nationalists want to demonstrate transformation, they can only do so
at a crude level, typically by changing names of towns or streets or erecting
tall statues to mediocrities. One such a statue was intended for Sardar Patel
but the Hindus did not have the technical skills and had to call in the Chinese
to build it.

To expand on this issue, it’s worth noting that historically Hindustan has
never excelled in the intellectual domain: high level discourse, critical
thinking, innovation or invention. [What a difference Shashi Tharoor as PM
would make.]
Way back in the 11th century (c.1020), Persian scholar Al-Biruni who
accompanied the first major Muslim invader Mahmud of Ghazni, made a study of
Hindu society and he was not impressed. He wrote: “The scientific ideas of the
Hindus are utterly confused and devoid of any logical order...they do not seem
to understand the methods of a strictly scientific deduction.”
[See Islamic Civilisation in South Asia by Burjor Avari, Routledge 2013]
Some five centuries later, the first Mughal Emperor Babur revealed in his
famous Memoirs c.1530 that he too found Hindustan backward in most respects.

Intellectual production remains poor to this day and more so under the BJP
regime. In the absence of creativity, BJP officials have succumbed to the
temptation to plagiarise even foreign material into Indian government documents
& journals and pass it as one’s own. The brilliant watchdog site Altnews.in has
discovered several BJP transgressions.
Examples:

  1. The Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways website has been
shamelessly using pictures of US and Canadian roadways!
  2. The Home Ministry Annual Report 2016-17 copied the image of the
Spain-Morocco floodlit border to pass off as the India-Pak border.

 Show solidarity and comradeship

The sudden demise of GT has shocked all , including its readers .No English

paper has the same content as the old proverb goes “ old wine in new bottle”.
Readers subscribe to several issues too .Every paper has its own identity,
loyal readers and createsa niche in society by highlighting local issues
that give it a characteristic robe .The shut down of GT should have invited
sympathy and loyalty from their fraternity in this serious hour of crisis. May
be one less competitor is an advantage but where does your pulse beat for
fraternity and for the suffering body of journalists, artists, photographers,
desk editors, and various others in the field left in the lurch high and dry?
Silence is not golden in every situation. Journalism preaches , stands fir
justice, rights but why is the voice chocked by silence of consent and no
dissent? Does not the pain of your fellow men even call for courtesy sharing
in being bold , forthright in denouncing injustice for denying compensation and
other benefits for lack of due notice as per statutes. GT died orphan gasping
for breath inspite of increase in prices and celebrating much delayed
anniversary issue
United we stand but secretly smiling, ignoring the plight is worst attitude of
not standing and landing a leaning shoulder to your fellowmen, fraternity in
distress and loss of lively hood. Where is the sense of justice to your own
breed at this great injustice? Perhaps the belief of survival of fittest is
in action. Who will write the obituary to GT , send flowers, condolences at its
premature demise ,if not the fellow comrades in profession?
There is strength in solidarity .See how crows gather in hordes when one of
them sends cries of distress
It will be a miracle if any daily spares space for sentiments of a loyal

PIL TO AMEND CONSTITUTION TO CALL INDIA BHARAT
We have Corona and so many life and death issues to handle and amending the

disposed of this matter when the Bench told the petioner"s (name not given)
lawyer that India is already called Bharat in the Constitution itself. I was
surprised to see reported that another bench headed by the CJI ruled that the
plea for Bharat may be treated as a representation by the government! What was
the need for so much importance to this plea rendered ? I fail to understand

Re: [Goanet] #BlackLivesMatter Beyond The Hashtag (Dhaka Tribune, 4/6/2020)

2020-06-05 Thread Mervyn Lobo
From: V M vmingoa @gmail.com
Date: 6/4/20 7:34 AM (GMT-06:00).
No one can deny that it is in fact distinctly possible this extraordinary
moment for humanity will result in an improved, and less unequal world.

We already know this: the Covid-19 pandemic’s realities have enforced the
core message of Martin Luther King, exactly as written from lockdown in a
Birmingham (Alabama) jail in 1963, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to
justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality,
tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects
all indirectly.”--

Nice article VM and a great finish - but let me add some other thoughts:

1) There have been hundreds of George Floyd's in the US this century. This
George Floyd is different only because someone taped the murder.

2) Capitalism thrives when a capitalist can pay you $x for an hour and extract
$2x worth of labor from you. When Covid hit the US, workers earning the minimum
wage (or close to it) were declared essential workers and forced to report to
work. In that swift stroke, Walmart, MacDonald, Ford dealers, etc. were able to
get the ok to keep open - as essential services - while mom and pop operations
could not. The tourniquet applied on small businesses was as effective as the
restraint used on George Floyd. Let us remember that the largest Covid positive
groups in the US have been found in the multinational processing meat plants
i.e. those which have the most densely packed workers.

3) For one whole week, I watched the Rodney King beating repeatedly on TV. Two
weeks later everything was back to normal in L.A. and I am half convinced the
same will happen in a months time. The US media is more interested in reporting
how much property damage is done at night - than on how discriminatory the
system is. When the property damage stops, the US media will turn to a
different subject and police discrimination will continue as usual.

4) Let us remember that Mandela took up the armed struggle only after he was
consistently blocked from using legal channels by the authorities. The modus
operandi of those with privileges has always been to give derogatory labels to
those with different ideas and then try and sweep them under the rug.
Sometimes, the fear of property destruction - is the only way results are got.

5) For the last three years I have been hearing several descriptions on Donald
Trump. By his own admission, he is a "Stable genius." It is abundantly clear to
the rest that he is incapable of dealing with this situation. As of now, I am
actually looking forward to him using the US military against US citizens.
Lastly, the funniest description I have heard of him - is one identifying him
as "Bunkerbitch."

Mervyn
