Matthew 3:16-17
===

16 After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the
heavens were opened [for him], and he saw the Spirit of God descending like
a dove [and] coming upon him.

17 And a voice came from the heavens, saying, “This is my beloved Son, with
whom I am well pleased.”

[Goanet] Bible verses for the Day

2020-06-06 Thread BT Yahoo Mail

Mr Argham, there are more crazy passages in Deuteronomy:

(Deut 7.1-11) When the Lord your God brings you into the land to occupy
and drives out before you seven nations mightier and more numerous than
you – the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites,
Hivites and the Jubesites – you must destroy them totally. Do not
intermarry with them, for that would turn your children to other gods.
Break down their altars, smash their pillars, hew down their sacred
poles and burn their idols. For the Lord has chosen you out of all the
peoples on earth to be his people, his treasured possession…

(Deut 7.16) You shall destroy all the peoples that Lord your God gives
over to you, showing them no pity.

(Deut 9.1-5) You are about to cross the Jordan today and dispossess
nations larger than and mightier than you… The Lord goes ahead of you
like a devouring fire. He will destroy them and drive them out quickly
as he promised …

(Deut 20.10-19) When you march to attack a city, make its people an
offer of peace. If they accept, force all the people to work for you. If
they refuse to make peace, engage them in battle. Kill all the males and
take the women, children, livestock and all else as booty for
yourselves… In the cities the Lord your God is bequeathing you, do not
leave anything that breathes alive. Destroy them completely - the
Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites- as
the Lord has commanded you.

(Deut 21.11-13) If you notice a beautiful woman among your captives and
are attracted to her, take her as your wife. Bring her into your home;
shave her head, trim her nails and put aside the clothes she was
wearing. After she has mourned her parents for a month, you may go to
her…

If a man finds that his wife was not a virgin on first contact, the
girl’s parents must provide proof of virginity by displaying 'the cloth'
before the elders. If the charge is untrue, the man pays 100 shekels of
silver to the girl’s father and he cannot divorce her. If the charge is
true, the men of the town shall stone the girl to death.
If a man rapes a virgin, she must pay 50 shekels to her father and he
must marry the girl.

B.I.B.L.E - Behold I Bring Life Eternal

Deuteronomy 8:17-19
17 Otherwise, you might say in your heart,“It is my own power and the
strength of my own hand that has got me this wealth.”
8 Remember then the LORD, your God, for he is the one who gives you the
power to get wealth, by fulfilling, as he has now done, the covenant he
swore to your ancestors.

19 But if you do forget the LORD, your God, and go after other gods,
serving and bowing down to them, I bear witness to you this day that you
will perish utterly.

[Goanet] Celebrating environmental day

2020-06-06 Thread Nelson Lopes

celebrating. environmental day

The earth includes animal and plant life and right to live is not monopoly of
humans alone. Everything does not exist for exclusive benefit of men .Humans
because of their intelligence have cornered all benefits for himself ,depriving
animals and plants the very right to survival. Forests have been devastated,
animals have been driven out of existence andnatural resources plundered to
meet the needs of development and progress
The climate changes and natural disasters have occurred mostly in the last
century due to excessive exploitation by human greed. not need. Humans are
not concerned with future generations and to that extent selfish
The earth has taken millions of years to evolve and be habitable and
destruction is heralded at unprecedented speed
Science is searching light years away for any sign of even microscopic life
at considerable costs. No where we have found ,discovered earth like planet
within reach and beyond that sustains variety of life as on earth .Many
species have vanished and many more are under endangered lists inspite of
efforts of conservation. preservation. Future generations may have to infer
from documents and records .as we do now on extinct dinosaurs , they say
vanished due to natural calamity
Science tells us that earth will disappear due death of star or hit by
asteroid, rogue star , or by blast of neutron star etc Surely earth is destined
to die naturally. Hence men is trying to escapebefore calamity occurs and
save the continuation of human race from oblivion. But the stockpile of
nuclear weapons ,missiles etc wars can destroy the earth twice over
Is it then not prudent to save the earth and environment instead of search for
illusive notexisting earthlike planet beyond the reach of science?
Green house effect due to excessive use of fossil fuels is increasing
temperature causing floods, cyclones melting of ice. table and swallowing low
lying cities and plants and animal life
The excessive manipulation of environment will spell disaster f or human race.
The climate change is a grim warning to humanity to its survival and very
existence. Science is attempting to colonise barren mars at a tremendous
costs of creating atmosphere ,food , shelters grow plants and harvest water
.It is wise and sensible to prolong the life of earth and environment and not
hasten its destruction with the hope of finding a new habitable earth in an
unknown galaxy. Every nation must work for protecting earth and environment
for posterity .Much has been done but much more needs to be done by co
operation ofNations

[Goanet] Trump explains his favorite Bible stories

2020-06-06 Thread Mervyn Lobo

Alexandra Petri

Columnist, Washington Post

June 4, 2020

If there was one thought in America’s mind when it watched our gallant
president stride to St. John’s Episcopal Church and heft a Bible in one hand,
it was: That man has definitely seen or held a Bible — or, indeed, any book —
before, and he knows it cover to cover, from Genesis to Two Corinthians and
even beyond! But what could be his favorite stories from that much-loved book
of his, or someone’s? Here is my best guess.

Genesis: Two fools want more, better information rather than to feel blissfully
ignorant all the time. They meet Tim Apple.

Exodus: Egypt, a land of very good administration, responds correctly to a
series of plagues by changing nothing about its daily lives or routines.

Golden Calf: People are inexplicably punished for worshiping something shiny
and fake.

Daniel: Ferocious beasts defy their duty to attack a man who has committed an
offense against his ruler.

Lazarus: Very good illustration of how easy it is to recover if you put your
mind to it and why nobody needs health coverage.

Job: Someone is treated almost but not quite as badly as Donald Trump gets
treated every day.

Two Corinthians: There are Corinthians, and there are two of them, for sure!

Joshua and the Battle of Jericho: Very sad story about a man blowing blasts on
a trumpet and damaging a wall.

Solomon: A man suggests a very good way of dealing with a disputed baby, but a
nasty woman interferes.

Lot: A man’s wife does something different with herself physically, and he sort
of notices after the fact.

David and Goliath: Someone makes the mistake of flinging a projectile at a
heavily-armored man; they will need to come down on him hard.

Noah: This is a good, inspiring story about a wise man in a floating bunker
avoiding a catastrophe, but on the other hand it is bad because he is also
surrounded by animals, birds, reptiles — disgusting.

Revelation: Beautiful first draft of Trump inauguration speech.

Abraham: Man confusingly remains married to the same woman for decades.

This mystery is saccharine retro, but you give in to it with pleasure

The premise is simple and holds delicious, genre-bending potential. The
scion of old money has put himself in self-imposed exile in a tiny Goan
village in an India on the cusp of independence. This sabbatical, which he
wrenched from his mother through a tantrum, is his last concerted effort to
carve a writer out of himself. In the village stewing in its own toxic
sameness, in a vast house echoing with unresolved memories and restless
ghosts, a story finds him.

To anyone born to parents who grew up in the 60s or early 70s, *Whisper in
the Wind *is comfort food. You wouldn’t immediately admit to this being
your ‘favourite’ fare, even if the heart does seek its predictability and
unpretentious flavour. The haveli is a fantastical childhood memory plucked
straight out of the movie screen. The characters in the story are
stereotypical — the ‘Babu’ from the city, a spirited village girl who can
face down the perils of her everyday existence, but is afraid to love. The
priest, the drunk, the madman, the villain, the lover, and the plaintive
music.

There is a scene in the Hindi classic *Madhumati *starring Vyjayanthimala
and Dilip Kumar, where in the big reveal the titular character reveals her
true self. Thinking about it gives you gooseflesh. *Whisper* builds up to
one such crescendo. We see it coming, and we don’t mind that we can.

Coelho’s approach to the supernatural is refreshing. It is neither a
breathless amplification of the protagonist’s confusion and fear, nor is
there any attempt to explain the why of it. It is matter of fact and quite
in sync with the way our hero looks at the world.

The narrative is linear, the detailing sparse. Apart from some interesting
experiments with feni and a smattering of Portuguese, the space time could
have been anywhere. That a good number of characters are reduced to props
by the end gives the story an underdeveloped feel. Still, the protagonists
find closure. The mystery is solved. Love is requited, one way or another.
That should do. Why expect virtuosity from comfort food.
