Like everything in Goa, it’s a very confusing story. Nothing is what it appears
to be.

Read about this also on today’s Goan Voice UK and you will see the many
dimensions and contradictory assertions of why “Ricky” sold his multi faceted
“Tito” businesses to a Punjabi casino owner.

Skim over all the entities (Police, Tax, politicians and a whole lot of others)
and hear his closing statement of how the Calangute (where his main business is
based) Sarpanch is a “good” man and how Michael Lobo the local MLA is his
“friend”.

Quod Erat Demonstrandum.

[Goanet] Jumping to Conclusions Without the Facts in the Indigenous Residential Schools Question

2021-06-29 Thread Roland Francis
For D’Sa:
A look from the other side before he rushes to judgement.

There is a link to the 44 page report of the Anthropologist from Lakehead
University in Thunder Bay, Ontario appointed by the Truth & Reconciliation
Commmission as well as a 2 page summary of that report produced by a group
called Real Women of Canada (probably a Catholic group).

Would be interested to see if D’Sa dismisses this view out of hand.

[Goanet] Fr. Pratap Naik May the Holy Spirit Continue to Guide you for Decades More important

2021-06-29 Thread Adolfo Mascarenhas
I read with great interest about your Journey in the Society of Jesus
contained in message ID: <
caodpnujwmcfmfaxkkseg0p3ttuftatrxoejtbc1a5kykgre...@mail.gmail.com>, Dated:
Mon, 28 Jun 2021

From: Pratap Naik To: Pratap Naik <
pratapnai...@gmail.com>

On Pentecost the remarkable thing was that when the Holy Spirit appeared
over the heeds of the Apostles, they suddenly lost fear and what is more
they spoke in one language and no matter what language the listeners used,
the UNDERSTOOD. The Jews were furious and said that they were drunk. That
day more than 3000 people followed Christ.

You have used diverse languages from quoting Abraham Lincoln to Ralph
Waldo Emerson :<<<

With your Science Background you appreciate, like Albert Einstein the
power of science to help humanity or to pulverize humans and everything
that God created. The family is important for stability .. But at the
end of the day God has a plan and a unique purpose for every one of us.
There simply cannot be another Fr Pratap Naik.

Some time ago I was accused that I was following the Western, White mans
Religion. What nonsense ...St. Thomas and Bartholomew were in India, via
Afghanistan, Pakistan and then to East India and got converts in India
centuries before, any of the Europeans ...Irish, English French even
Portuguese. became Catholics. In addition St Augustine came from Africa,
his Mother Monique an Arab.He was and understood Greek, Roan and even
Egypt Philosophers. If the Society of Jesus had existed thenI am
sure that St Augustine would be a SJ

Of course you are an authority in Konknni ...that is because of your
humanity and humility and willingness Not to assume you knew everything
.and that is where there is a vast store of knowledge, science and
technology and alas superstitions . In Goa, I was driving with a friend
she told me that near the Prison in Quepem, opposite where there was a
Hindu Shrine, there was a tree and when the fruit fell, smoke came out
.She pointed the tree to me...it was a Baobab but even here in Tanzania
there is so much superstition attached to them roads are slightly
curved so as to avoid cutting a tree, many even in Dar es Salaam will not
go anywhere near a Baobab tree.

So Fr. Prarap NaikI hope we meet in Goa and talk about Spirits and
Ecology. May the Holy Spirit Guide Us

My contribution goes far beyond Konknni linguistics and extends to
ecology, eco-spirituality,
horticulture, promotion of Konknni language and culture through mass media
and social media, care for domestic and wild animals including reptiles
which most of the people are scared and avoid, guiding and encouraging
people to grow in positive values, sharing of my thoughts, quotations,
videos of music, dance, and short movies through social media, and reaching
out 3L namely, the least, last, lost students and their poor families
irrespective of religion, region, language, and culture.

Throughout my life before joining the SJ and afterwards I was guided by the
teachings of the Bible. Besides this, I was influenced by the thoughts of
great thinkers and teachers of different religions. ?Associate yourself
with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation; for it is
better to be alone than in bad company.? said George Washington. His sound
advice I have followed till date.

Till I reached tenth standard, I had never thought of becoming a
priest. I wanted
to be a teacher, because I was helping my siblings and others in their
studies while studying. While I had my own plan for my life, God had a
master plan for me. That is how I joined the SJ. First, I opted for the
Darjeeling region and later within a year seeing the greater need, I joined
the Goa-Pune Province to work in the Kannada region.

When I finished my philosophy studies and a year of regency, my superiors
and fellow Jesuits
thought that I must be set aside for Konknni work. With the little
initial reluctance,
finally I accepted the challenge and never looked back. I proposed the
concept of establishing Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr (TSKK)and worked with
the late Fr. Matthew Almeida for all the aspects connected with TSKK and
its campus, including constructing the aesthetic building. For me life is
not what I want, but what God decrees. Hence, I accepted the saying, ?When
life isn?t the way you like, like it the way it is.? Life in the SJ gave me
ample opportunities to bloom and spread the fragrance. There were moments
of jubilant sense of reaching the Mount Everest peak and at times thrown
down to the frightening and descending unknown abyss of the ocean. During
these moments I reminded myself the sound words of Gautama Buddha, ?Do not
dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the
present moment.? Living in the present moment and swimming against the
powerful current of worldly culture and standard was a great

[Goanet] Native children in Catholic residential schools in Canada treated abominably

2021-06-29 Thread Eddie D'Sa
Hi Francis,

I see that you agree with the term 'cultural genocide', a term used by the
white led Truth & Reconciliation Commission (Report 2015)
You say that the children died of loneliness, inadequate care, harsh discipline
or disease but were not directly killed.
How would you know what really happened without proper investigation or
testimony?
The Anglos are masters with their language English, at inventing categories
that can absolve themselves from blame.

---
Children were separated from their families, some of them as young as three.
Can you imagine the trauma suffered by the children, deprived of the warmth and
close contact with their parents? And what of teen girls in their menstrual
years? Did they receive adequate comfort and protection?
In the schools, children were forbidden to speak their language or practice
their own culture. Many children also suffered physical and sexual abuse. Over
150,000 children passed through the school system and the last school was
closed as recently as 1996.

Trudeau who is Catholic met the Pope in 2017 and said that he had a "deeply
personal and wide-ranging, thoughtful conversation with the leader of my own
faith".
“I told him how important it is for Canadians to move forward on real
reconciliation with the indigenous peoples and I highlighted how he could help
by issuing an apology,” Trudeau told reporters after meeting the pope in Rome.

PM Justin Trudeau admitted that that successive Canadian governments "have
failed" indigenous people and promised to outline a "national action plan" to
tackle the violence.

As for the holy man of the Europe, Pope Francis said he was pained but refused
to apologise. Is there were legal implications, should a top religious leader
fear and dodge them? After all, he has accepted the titles Supreme Pontiff and
Vicar of Christ. How could Christ's Vicar be a weakling and coward?
In any case, do clerical or government apologies mean anything without return
of vast stolen land and payment of trillions of dollars in reparations? Were
any of the white priests and nuns punished?

[Goanet] RIBANDAR REMAINS EVER SO GRATEFUL TO FR ANTONIO LOURENCO FERNANDES

2021-06-29 Thread Aires Rodrigues
After tirelessly serving our Ribandar Church for seven long years our very
dear Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Antonio Lourenco Fernandes today moves on to
the Socorro Church. Not a seven year itch but a call to serve another
Parish.

Our Church had been lacking in the very basic amenities while the
infrastructure left a lot to be desired. As a result of his determination,
the entire Church premises is now magnificent and one that we can all be
proud of. The parishioners of Ribandar will always remain ever so indebted
for the incredible transformation of our Church that Fr. Antonio Lourenco
Fernandes made possible by his sheer dedication and relentless hard work.
He was a Messiah sent by God to restore the glory of God’s people and the
Church. A warrior of Christ he has been.

Ribandar also remains so very grateful to Architects Ashley Mascarenhas and
Dattaprasad Wagle who along with Structural Engineer Paresh Gaitonde and
the crew for having through their expertise given our Parish Priest all the
assistance and guidance in making a very tall dream come true.

We wish Fr. Antonio Lourenco Fernandes an abundance of blessings and all
the very best in his pastoral ministry for many years to come. Let us hope
that in addition to his pastoral care, his charm, humor and warm
personality which we became accustomed to will prove to be an added boost
to the Parish of Socorro.

Whilst we say adieus but not good bye to Rev Fr. Antonio Lourenco
Fernandes, we warmly welcome into our fold Rev Fr Francisco Jacinto Dias
who takes over as our new Parish Priest of Ribandar to keep the flame
burning and continue to keep our spirits uplifted.

[Goanet] India's version of Astra-Zeneca COVID vaccine rejected by EU

2021-06-29 Thread mj preston

The European Union did not to include the Indian-made Covishield vaccine
– a locally produced copy of the AstraZeneca shot – in its vaccine
passport program.

On Monday, Adar Poonawalla, the head of the Serum Institute of India
(SII) said
  the
European Medicines Agency (EMA) had elected to exclude Covishield in the
list of vaccines sanctioned within the EU scheme.
The program, which, from July 1, opens European borders to people who
have been inoculated with approved EU vaccines, includes AstraZeneca’s
vaccines produced in the EU and the UK but not the identical version
made by the SII, the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer. The list also
includes the Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson shots.
There may be fear or doubts in the minds of Europeans as to whether the
vaccine may contain cow urine or some other unauthorised substance. Or
there may be doubts about the procedures used. India has no great
scientific reputation and the uneducated Government leaders like Modi
with his flowing beard hardly inspire confidence in foreigners.
A few weeks ago, a new book by the former head of Doon School, Dehra,
now based at a Singapore University, claimed that China cannot regard
India as an equal because of its limited achievements and chaotic
culture.

[Goanet] Remembering Alfred Tavares

2021-06-29 Thread Roland Francis
A great idea from you Linken, about attempting to create an informal record of
the life and times of Alfred Tavares.

I could gather as much information, anecdotes and experiences of relatives,
friends and even strangers whose lives crossed with Alfred in any way, even
across space.

I would welcome any communication however insignificant it might seem that
might be a small part of the jigsaw puzzle of Alfred’s life.

I would appreciate even being given the contacts of a person or persons,
including living relatives, who who might be able to contribute to this
gathering of information either thorough Goanet or my email.

If you agree to it Linken, I can then present this raw heap to you for refining
it into Alfred’s biography. You will do a good job of it.

Can we set the ball rolling with FN and Bernice please?

Linken Fernandes wrote;
I would lean towards a biography first, and think one could perhaps be knocked
off in a few months by (hint) a friend with as facile a pen as has been seen
over the years in the pages here. I, of course, would selfishly consider the
meat and bones of the bio for a protagonist rendered even more larger than life
in a work of fiction.

[Goanet] Rob Peter to pay Paul

2021-06-29 Thread Nelson Lopes
ROB PETER TO PAY PAUL
Today is the feast of Apostles PETER and PAUL
THE former most trusted apostles of Jesus even though he denied christ
thrice as foretold by jesus before cock crows. He repented and was forgiven
He is called the rock of faith upon which Christianity is built
On the other hand Paul was the fierce prosecutor of Christians and was also
an apostle after the death of christ. On the streets of Damascus he was
temporarily blinded, Jesus asking him why he is the prosecutor ?
It opened his eyes and became the most enlightened to propagate faith
He was familiar with Greek and Roman cultures which enabled him to be great
preacher and writer
Why they are linked together is possibly because both of them meet very
closely in their faith and propagation
The phrase was in existence about 6000 years and appears to be in use on
1540 and may also have been in use in 13 century
The dynamics between finances of cathedral of Peter and cathedral of Paul
are the most likely reasons why their honoured together
The phrase means to borrow from Peter to pay the debts of Paul
In other words to settle one debt immediately by creating another and
getting relief
Fortunately the phrase cannot be reversed to rob Paul to pay Peter
There is no religious connections in the use of this phrase
It has been widely applied in religious significance thereby meaning to say
that act of defrauding the rich to pay the poor is not acceptable in the
principles of faith even though it is a good act
and will not be condoned
The Govt of the day is doing exactly the same and taking credit for
develooment and progress. There is no equity between fairness and justice
or equilibrium between doing good by hurting another.Such acts and
behaviour are not praise worthy no matter the magnitude of goodness done
and has to be condemned as wrong per se.
Konkani baxen oxi ek munim Assameza voilem kennem kaddun sagvadd
korinaka
It is wrong and will not be forgiven or accepted if our acts of charity are
as the result of hurting other to win the admiration of the deprived or
destitute
It has to be a win win win situation
The popularity of this phrase in common parlance has been greatly
enhanced by association with these greatest , most revered saints of
catholic church. It has nothing to do with paying debt disrobbing
,diverting ill-gotten wealth to do charity and thus gain fame popularity
and is mostly applied to politicians and filthy rich using wealth
created by deceit cheating ,squeezing the rights of the downtrodden

Although my own brother(the late Fr. Joseph Maciel, S.J.)

the white led Truth & Reconciliation Commission (Report 2015)
You say that the children died of loneliness, inadequate care, harsh
discipline or disease but were not directly killed.
How would you know what really happened without further investigation or
testimony?
The Anglos are masters with a versatile language like English at
inventing categories that absolve themselves from blame.

---
Children were separated from their families, some of them as young as
three.

Can you imagine the trauma suffered by the children, deprived of the
warmth and close contact with their parents? And what of teen girls in
their menstrual years? Did they receive adequate advice and protection?
In the schools, children were forbidden to speak their language or
practice their own culture. Many children also suffered physical and
sexual abuse. Over 150,000 children passed through the school system and
the last school was closed as recently as 1996.
Trudeau who is Catholic met the Pope in 2017 and said that he had a
"deeply personal and wide-ranging, thoughtful conversation with the
leader of my own faith".
“I told him how important it is for Canadians to move forward on real
reconciliation with the indigenous peoples and I highlighted how he
could help by issuing an apology,” Trudeau told reporters after meeting
the pope in Rome.
PM Justin Trudeau admitted that that successive Canadian governments
"have failed" indigenous people and promised to outline a "national
action plan" to tackle the violence.
But the holy man of the Europe, Pope Francis, said he was pained but
refused to apologise. Is there were legal implications, should a top
religious leader fear and dodge them? After all, he has accepted the
titles Supreme Pontiff and Vicar of Christ. How could Christ's Vicar be
a weakling and coward?
In any case, do clerical or government apologies mean anything without
return of vast stolen land and payment of trillions of dollars in
reparations? Were any of the white priests and nuns punished?

Women and girls suffered tremendously.
Pamela Palmater, chair inIndigenous Governance, Ryerson university, told
RT that she favoured political pressure on Ottawa to"do something and
toactually investigate state actors who are complicit or directly
involved in themurders, exploitation and disappearances of indigenous
women and girls."
"Rrampant violence againstindigenous people had been ignored for
decades" she said.
"It's almostlike the #MeToo movement when mso-ansi-language:EN">women
have not been believed when they were raped orsexually assaulted. For
indigenous women and girls it had been evenworse."
mso-ansi-language:EN">According to Royal Canadian Mounted Police
estimates backin 2014, over 1,000 aboriginal women were killed between
1980 and 2012.

The Chinese government demanded at the UN that the Canadian government
should open a full investigation of the violence against native people
and violation of the human rights.
In contrast, India did not issue any statement on the scandal of the
Native children of Canada.

Had Modi even heard of the scandal or was he preoccupied with his gods
and godmen, cows and caste, and petty political issues?

Subject: [Goanet] 751 Graves in Residential Schools
Eddie,
Although you have not qualified the word genocide with “cultural” it
is important to call it what it is “cultural genocide” or else one might
get the impression the whole race of indigenous children of the First
Nations were slaughtered or killed.
The sins of the white priests and nuns running these schools might have
been horror-provoking but the graves being found were not of children
that were killed by those in authority whatever else might have been the
indignities heaped on them.
Those graves contain the bodies of children that died of loneliness or
insufficient care or tortuous discipline, even of disease but they were
not directly killed.
That is the narrative that is known to us so far, unless the Church
agrees to open its records and we know otherwise.
Autopsies on bones are not possible because in the Indigenous culture,
burial mounds (graves) are sacred, worthy of worship and no one will be
allowed to work on them. Analyses of remains might have told us the
story of those buried.
While the Catholic Church does not apologize for the treatment of these
wards in their schools, the government on several occasions has
expressed public remorse. The Church might be afraid of the legal
ramifications, the Government has no such fears.

Roland.

This description of Alfie is so apt. He was a very dear friend of mine.
