[Goanet] FAULTY ROOF ENDANGERS NEW BUILDING OF HIGH COURT AT GOA.

2021-08-15 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Finally, Goa’s highest Temple of Justice will start functioning from
tomorrow at the new premises in Porvorim.

Surprisingly our High Court building has been designed like the Gujarat
High Court and has no sloping roof. This may be impractical and
inappropriate in view of the very heavy rainfall Goa gets. Experts opine
that this flat roof will start leaking in a year or two.

With a lot of taxpayer’s money having been spent on our new High Court
building, the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC)
should have planned our High Court for it to withstand and endure for
decades to come the heavy monsoons that lash our State.

But the GSIDC is known for its very substandard projects. A glaring example
is the prestigious Atal Setu Bridge across the Mandovi. We were assured it
would last over a century but has developed huge craters on the bridge in
the second year itself.

Instead of being just another concrete structure it would have been so
appropriate if our new High Court building could have reflected the facets
of Goan Architecture. It could have symbolically established the continuity
of the old buildings where our High court began its working, first from the
old Judicial Commissioners Court in the city and then to the current old
Lyceum complex at Altinho.

The legacy of Goa’s rich history in the field of Judicial and Legal
services should have been placed in a better context for posterity. There
was room to plan and design our High Court with a Goan centric finesse. But
let us now live with this missed opportunity.

[Goanet] National flag hoisting at St Jacinto Island Goa

2021-08-15 Thread Yahoo!Mail

Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android

  15.08.2021Hon ble CM of Goa.
Sub : National Flag hoisting...at St Jacinto Island.
Respected Sir.
Your reported outburst calling the villagers as anti nationals for initially
not permitting hoisting the national flag on the island by Navy  was in the
humble opinion of  native Goans an impulsive outburst at best...and good that
it was corrected by you in time.
Fortunately better communucations between the Defence personnel and the
villagers of this Island put an end to the controversy.
Having had native Goans both as Chief of Army Gen Sunith Rodrigues and Raksha
Mantri late Mr Manohar G Parrikar..besides several others in the armed forces
to date native Goans can  never ever be branded as anti nationals and
definitely not after 19.12.1961 having joined the Union of India.
But if there is any  bitterness or underlying suspicion of the acts of the
Defence Forces it stems mainly from the fact that the Navy have not in the past
honored the order of Collector South Goa District both dated 43/1/87/Rev/  dt
08.12.1987 and 26.07.1989.on transfer of the 360075 ha land in survey Nos 1.2.3
of Canacona taluka..in Goa to allow on the Anjediva  island the celebration
of customary feast of St Francis de Assisi on 4th Oct  and Feast of Our Lady of
Speings ..Nossa Senhora de Brotas on 2nd February every year.
The last time these celebrations were permitted was on  02.02.2004 and Feast of
St Francis de Assis 4th Oct never allowed as the Chapel has been barricaded and
declared out of bounds  then onwards..
CM late  Parrikar had donated towards repairs of  the Church on the Island
Rs.25000 at the request of this writer.
Later as Defence Minister Late Parrikar  had got the ASI Hubbali division  to
repair the Church the  Fort  a pre Liberation Canon lying there in 2017 ..
But till this date the Navy does not permit celebration of the two customary
feasts
In fact while 4th Dec is celeberated as Navy Day and all Indians are permitted
access to the Sea Bird establishment Naval vessels with due security conditions
the reason for adopting a dual policy towards these public oriented events viz
the customary  Feasts celebration   not being allowed  on the grounds of Naval
exercises being carried out at the base is baffling.
Govt of Goa should now take up the matter with the Naval authorities forthwith
and in right earnest get them to honor these terms to bridge the distrust
betweenNaval authorities and Goans at large as ..the religious sentiments have
been hurt for far too long since 4 Oct 2004 to date.
Trust this will clear the well averted situation on the island and bring out
the traditional bonhomie of indigenous Goan natives  known worldwide.
Warm regards on the 75th Independence Day

Sincerely yours.

Re: [Goanet] India@75: Country celebrates success amid challenges (Anish Esteves)

2021-08-15 Thread Anish Esteves
Today, 15th August marks the 75th year of India’s Independence from
British Rule. The theme of this Independence day is ‘Nation First, Always
First’.

While the fight for Independence was a long and arduous task, India has
made great strides over the past few decades. However, with challenges
ranging from the raging pandemic to a sinking economy, and from the climate
crisis to the degeneration of Indian democracy (Read ‘Electoral
Autocracy’), the road ahead lies bumpy and full of challenges.

However, it is easy to focus only on the negative aspects. There are
positive sides too.

So, I asked a few prominent people about what they thought was India's
biggest 'Achievement' as it celebrates its 75th Independence Day:

   Here are some of them:

*Clyde Crasto, NCP Spokesperson* : "Information Technology".

  * Damodar Mauzo, Konkani Novelist and Sahitya Akademi Award winner*:
"Railway network, the Green Revolution and Operation (Milk) Flood (also
called white revolution)".

*Avirook Sen, Journalist and Author of 'Aarushi, 2015'*: "Our greatest
achievement is our shared understanding that everyone who grows a beard is
not Rabindranath Tagore".

*Eugenio Viassa Monteiro, Author of 'The Rise of India' and co-founder
of the prominent Portuguese business school, the AESE*: "For me, it is the
mastering of IT and the fabulous pool of IT Scientists India prepared."

Overall, India has evolved into a vibrant democracy over the years and
has achieved important milestones. However, a lot needs to be done in
future. Besides, a reduction in divisions based on caste, creed and
religion will go a long way in helping India’s cause.

Wishing you a Very Happy Independence Day!!!

GOA 1961: LIBERATED OR CONQUERED?

On 18 December 1961, India’s armed forces marched into Goa, Daman and Diu
and, in a virtually bloodless operation lasting some 36 hours, ended the
Portuguese rule of 451 years.

Was Goa ‘liberated’ or was it ‘conquered’?

The question still befuddles many. The subject is, generally speaking,
sparsely understood at best and misunderstood at worst. Being the 60th
anniversary of the event, I decided to share, in about 60 easily readable
installments, one every Sunday beginning the next, the full story – the
background, diplomacy, arguments, the run up, the buildup, the actual
military operation, and its aftermath in Goa, within India and
internationally.

This 1961 event is serialised from a revised (and as yet unpublished)
chapter called ‘The Wars’ from my book, ‘Patriotism In Action: Goans in
India’s Defence Services’ first published in 2010 and now being readied for
a final edition. The chapter on wars seeks to bring out the little known
fact that Goan Officers were there in practically every military op in
post-1947 India – 1947/48 J&K Ops, 1961 Goa Ops (there were 14 Goan
Officers from the Army, Navy and Air Force in Vijay-1), 1962 China
Conflict, 1965 Indo-Pak War, 1971 Indo-Pak (Bangladesh) War, 1999 Vijay-2
(Kargil), besides a host of other ops like defending Siachen, IPKF Sri
Lanka, UN Peacekeeping, counter insurgency and cross border terrorism –
Goans were there in each and every one of them, some laying down their
lives.

Beginning next Sunday, 22 August 2021, the story of Goa 1961 will appear
weekly in the local Marathi language daily newspaper ‘Gomantak’ and

[Goanet] Revelations From the US Census

Subject: [Goanet] The 2020 US Population Report

Your Message-ID: <00649fe0-485b-4c4b-a6b2-288feeb7a...@gmail.com> was of
great interest to me Professionally. as a Goan, a couple of University
friends are currently involved in assisting the Government for the first
Digital Census of Tanzania.

Professionally, I found myself introducing ideas which I learnt during my
field work in California and modifying it for local conditions. My
colleague from East Anglia and myself trained University Colleagues Staff
in the Geography Department and BRALUP then trained all the teachers who
in turn would train thousands of census enumerators etc in all the 15
Regions of Tanzania . Producing Census statistics is one
thing...interpreting it is something so different ...so BRALUP / IRA went
ahead and fellows wrote about Rate of Growth, Urbanization etc etc ...Soon
we were training Demographers with staff from Egypt, USA, UK India and
within a decade had a core of Tanzanian Professors, who were trained mostly
in the US...Thanks to the Rockefeller Foundations

In the 1970's computers came in ..there was a hurdle .some Minister
objected to the use of Computers.persuading officials require
information ..here is where a Goan friend gave me some
interesting information to make my task easier.

That aside most interesting were the points you highlighted.

You highlighted very interesting observations in the latest once a decade
US population survey, some of which we knew but some we didn?t.

 1. The whites are now less than half the population.

2. They are still the single prevailing race but not in California, the
most dense US State.
3. The Asians and Latinos are growing 4 times faster than the national
average.
4. The mixed identity population is now more than a tenth of the total
people.

5. Blacks are outnumbered as the single biggest minority race.

6. The country has a very low young population.

>From the Associated Press By comparison, the non-Hispanic growth rate over
the decade was 4.3%. The Hispanic share of the U.S. population grew to
18.7% of the U.S. population, up from 16.3% in 2010.

The 2020 Census confirmed what we have known for years ? the future of the
country is Latino,? said Arturo Vargas, CEO of the National Association of
Latino Elected and Appointed Officials Educational Fund.

Most interesting was the fact that

First The Whites were no longer a majority

Second, that the Hsipanic Population and the Black s dominate

Thirdly that California and not New York has the highest PD.

This means that one day SPANLISH may be the language of USA

India and China Africa will be be "pure" ...if in Tanzania alone we have
157 tribal communities where does the notion of Purity come in

[Goanet] PRESERVE OLD GOA'S OLD WORLD VINTAGE CHARM

Preserve Old Goa'sold world vintage charm
Elvidio Miranda

Old Goa is one of the last bastions of the Renaissance era churches and
spiritual heritage that has to be preserved since it houses the Basilica de Bom
Jesus, Se Cathedral, Santa Monica monastery, Museum of Christian Art, the ruins
of St. Augustine and the St. Cajetan church which are all in one place that
celebrates architectures such as Gothic, Corinthian, Byzantine, Norman, Baroque
which will never be able to be replicated. It is also the holy city which draws
huge crowds like no other city in Goa and the last vestige that makes Goa to be
called as the Rome of the East. This place is known for having exquisite
architecture and which houses the sacred relics of the Goencho Saib whose
blessings are sought by everyone who visits Goa. The replication of such an old
world charm is not possible. It is the duty of the Government of India, the
Archaeological Survey of India and all well meaning citizens of Goa to make it
a point that under no circumstances should this old sacred city be adulterated
by compromising its solemn spiritual heritage value. It should be an election
issue for the residents of Old Goa and its neighbourhoood to join forces to
prevent the desecration of this Old holy city that is venerated by one and all
who visit Goa.

[Goanet] Macau tested whole population for Covid.

2021-08-15 Thread Bernado Colaco
Around 2 weeks ago an exchange slipped through the net bringing in Covid to
Macau and into the community. The whole family of four were infected with the
Delta variant.
The government machinery got into action, red zoned the area where the infected
family were living. Thereafter tested the whole population in 3 days plus the
results. The current population in Macau is six lakhs. Touch wood there is no
infection yet other than the family who is undergoing treatment.
Maybe measures like the wearing of masks, continued social distancing, testing
for temperature and closing of borders has helped.

Goans were there in each and every one of them, some laying down their
lives.

Beginning next Sunday, 22 August 2021, the story of Goa 1961 will appear
weekly in the local Marathi language daily newspaper ‘Gomantak’ and
simultaneously, in English, at Facebook, Goa-centric mail lists and
Whatsapp. (Please do remember that formatting is lost at FB and WA, and
reformatting would be a bore!)

Feel free to share. But, since this is as yet unpublished work, please do
NOT delete the attribution that appears at the foot of every instalment.

In case of any comments/queries that you would like me to read, please
email me at, valmikif at gmail dot com.

Hope you will enjoy reading the 1961 story as much as I enjoyed researching
and writing it!
