[Goanet] GLIMPSES OF CHURCH HISTORY

2021-09-24 Thread Eddie D'Sa

How did the Church come into being?
For an answer, we helpless Goans and other Asians have to depend on the
wisdom of the Europeans & their institutions.

Here is what an American Archdiocese (of St Paul) has to say:
By his Cross, Jesus gave birth to the Church. The origin and growth of
the Church are symbolized by the blood and water which flowed from the
open side of the crucified Jesus.
The Holy Spirit revealed the Church at Pentecost, empowering the
Apostles to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

[So where is this mysterious Spirit to be found? Does he live in London
or Mapusa? Such questions must not be asked.

We Asians must just believe whatever the wise ones of the West say.]

NOW FOR SOME HISTORY:
The New Testament began with the letters of St Paul from about 48 CE
until his death by Roman Emperor Nero in 64 CE.
When Paul died, not a single Gospel had been written. Paul was a
controversial figure and a reading of Galatians shows that he clashed
with Peter and the Jerusalem church leaders. There are irreconcilable
differences between Paul’s views and the account in the Book of Acts
(supposedly about Paul’s work). Paul never mentions Jesus’ supernatural
birth and has a different idea of his resurrection.
The official Church piously believes that Peter was Bishop of Rome but
nobody has said so and there is no document as evidence.

Let's move a few centuries ahead.
Innocent I became Pope in 401. He was the son of the previous pope,
Anastasius I (399-401).
The Church at the time preached that babies who died without baptism (a
Catholic ritual) went to hell for all eternity. But other Popes went
further. They believed that if baptized babies died without communion,
they went straight to hell.

SOME WEIRD EVENTS
In the closing years of the 9th century, rival factions battling for the
Chair of St Peter brought chaos to Rome. In 896 the deranged Pope
Stephen VII (belonging to one faction) decided to unearth the 9-month
old corpse of a Corsican predecessor, Pope Formosus (891-96) who had
belonged to another faction. He had the corpse dressed in full papal
robes and placed on the throne in the Lateran palace. He then proceeded
to interrogate ‘him’ personally. Formosus was charged with becoming pope
under false pretences.
After being found guilty by the Synod, the corpse was stripped of all
but a hair-shirt clinging to the withered flesh. The two fingers used to
give the apostolic blessing were hacked off. The body was dragged
through the palace and hurled on to the mob in the streets. They in turn
dragged it to the river Tiber and flung it in. The corpse held together
by the hairshirt was recovered by Formosus’ supporters and given a
decent burial. It was eventually returned to its tomb in St Peter’s.

Later in the same year 896 Stephen himself was siezed and strangled. His
supporters elected a certain Cardinal Sergius as pope while the opposing
party elected one of their own. In the violence that followed, Sergius
and his supporters were chased out of the city. Over the next 12 months,
four more popes (among them Romanus and Theodore II) scrambled onto the
bloodstained Chair of St Peter, maintaining themselves precariously for
a few weeks (or even days) before being hounded out.

The first pope of the 10th century was Benedict IV (900-03). His
successor, Leo V, reigned for just one month when he was seized and
imprisoned by a usurper, Cardinal Christopher. Meanwhile Cardinal
Sergius who had tried for the papal office some seven years earlier now
tried again. His supporters got both Leo and Christopher murdered and
their leader became Pope Sergius III in 904.

Sergius decided to honour Pope Stephen VII with a handsome epitaph and
to overturn the judgement that had re-instated Pope Formosus’ character.
In fact, Sergius had Formosus, now ten years dead, re-exhumed and
condemned once again. The corpse was then beheaded, three more fingers
cut off and thrown into the river Tiber. The headless body was caught in
a fisherman’s net and returned a second time to St Peter’s.

I know you must have created a scholarship or award in memory of your son. But
that may have been out of your own desire for it as much as to remember him.

What did your son love, or be happy about.
A dance, a picnic, a talent show, a tiatr?

Organize it on a one-off or an annual basis? He would probably have wanted it.

[Goanet] WILL GOA EVER SEE PROBITY IN PUBLIC LIFE?

2021-09-24 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Persons in Public life are expected to be moral exemplars of morality and
ethics as they have publicly pledged to uphold and defend that realm. For
those holding a Public Office, there can be no dividing line between their
Personal and Public lives.

The private lives of public figures are wide open to public scrutiny. What
they do in their private life matters and does impact their public
responsibilities. Can they be ethical in public if they are dishonorable in
private? Their private life reveals more about morals than their sound
bytes.

When to get appointed even as a peon one needs a police clearance, it is
highly appalling that persons with extremely serious criminal cases pending
against them are holding public office.

Truth and integrity must always be the overriding characteristics of those
who are privileged and entrusted to serve others as public officials.
Repaying that trust by being accountable and acting responsibly with
integrity is crucial in a democracy and to ensure good Governance. Failure
to do so only leads to anarchy and a failed state abounding in corruption
and a breakdown in the rule of law.

The French Nobel Prize winning Author and Philosopher Albert Camus had
rightly said “A man without ethics is a wild beast loosed upon this world”.

[Goanet] The Great Resignation

2021-09-24 Thread Roland Francis
What is it?
It’s a consequence of the pandemic during which employees who have been aware
of Work-Life Balance suddenly think it is the most important aspect of their
employment.
It entails quitting their job without hesitation if it looks to them that their
employers don’t much value their well being outside of work.

What are the characteristics and what is it caused by?
A large segment (40% of the in-demand occupations) will resign or change jobs).
Career downsizing - less stress, less responsibility, more family and personal
time.
More confidence in themselves.
Employment market rebound where jobs are a-begging.
It is a starting and will become a global phenomenon.

What do the people involved want from it?
Flexibility in their work manner and time.
Desire to work remotely.
Moving away from ambition.
Want employers to treat them as complex humans rather than just workers.
Realization that one often works hard for non-essentials.

How did it come about?
Direct consequence of the pandemic where life was lost and one learned to live
without many superfluous wants and desires.

The article explains all this well, as well as towards the end, suggests ways
to deal with it.

Here comes the Great Resignation. Why millions of employees could quit their
jobs post-pandemic

not have read.

Research, even on Goa and Goans, may come from many sources, including your
own. Establishing oneself as the Paragon of Goan Truth does not negate
research by others, many of whom may have never visited Goa or India. But
to quote an old adage, it’s from the mouths of strangers that we often hear
the truth.

We have outstanding research on overseas Goans, among them we have Jessica
Kuper, Donna Nelson and most exhaustively Margret Frenz from Oxford. Their
studies of Goans are outstanding and well worth the read, even or perhaps
specifically, by local experts.

Be appreciative of research by non-Goans, let a thousand flowers

[Goanet] Goan Inquisition: A novel about the Inquisition

2021-09-24 Thread Mel de Quadros
Here is a rather good novel about the Goan Inquisition by an American
author who has specialized in Portuguese Jewish history.

R*ichard Zimler**'s novel, Guardian of the Dawn, documents the little-known
Portuguese Inquisition in India, in 16th century Goa. He points out that,
apart from their laws and religion, the Portuguese also imported and
enforced their infamous methods of interrogation to subdue troublemakers.*

*Zimler has won numerous awards for his work, including a 1994 US National
Endowment of the Arts Fellowship in Fiction and 1998 Herodotus Award for
best historical novel. The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon was picked as 1998 Book
of the Year by British critics, while Hunting Midnight has been nominated
for the 2005 IMPAC Literary Award. Together with Guardian of the Dawn,
these novels comprise the 'Sephardic Cycle' -- a group of interrelated but
independent novels about different branches of a Portuguese Jewish family.*

[Goanet-News] BJP's Shaina N.C., Spouse, Set To Pull Out of Controversial Project at Old Goa (Devika Sequeira, TheWire)

2021-09-24 Thread Goanet Reader
DEVIKA SEQUEIRA
devikaseque...@gmail.com

In the real estate frenzy that
has gripped Goa currently, even
protected sites have become
vulnerable to land sharks.The
Viceroy's Arch, Old Goa.

Caught in a storm of local protests and legal challenges over
a construction within the protected world heritage zone at
Old Goa with its cluster of centuries-old churches, Mumbai's
power couple Shaina N.C., the BJP's Maharashtra spokesperson,
and her husband, developer Manish Munot have decided to pull
out of the project.

BJP's Maharashtra spokesperson Shaina N.C.. Photo: Bollywood
Hungama/CC BY 3.0/Wikimedia Commons

Insisting that they were being targeted with an ulterior
motive because his wife is "famous", Munot told The Wire he
was withdrawing from the project because he didn't want to
hurt anyone's sentiments. "I am on the verge of selling my
property; in fact, I have basically sold it," he said.

The property was no longer of any use to him, the builder
said. "I had every intention of building there. Had I been
given permission I would not let go of my rights. I go by
the law in everything."

The question is why would an experienced developer
like Munot buy a property in a protected area
(under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological
  Sites and Remains Act, 1958)?

Calling it "a case of gross misuse of power by the state
government to favour a powerful and influential party," a
special leave petition (SLP) filed in the Supreme Court by
the Save Old Goa Action Committee has challenged the ongoing
construction of the river-front ground plus one bungalow
coming up within the protected zone and a stone's throw away
from the Chapel of St. Cajetan, the Viceroy's Arch and Largo
of St. Cajetan.

The controversy has also stung the Goa Forward
Party (GFP). It recently eased out its treasurer
Suraj Lotlikar after the Old Goa case sparked
objections from the church and created a political
  uproar.

"He is no longer with us," GFP spokesperson
Durgadas Kamat told The Wire. Just months away
from an election early next year, the local party
was obviously keen to distance itself from the
  political blowback from the case.

Communities Fear Return of Old Normal

Munot and Lotlikar's wife, Suvarna Suraj Lotlikar, are
co-owners of the property in question which they acquired in
two separate sale deeds executed on the same day in May 2015.

Goa's real estate market has spiked to new highs post the
second phase of the coronavirus pandemic with scores of young
professionals and the urban rich from the rest of India
scouring for their Goa dream house to work from home in more
conducive surroundings.

The resurgent boom has also spawned a subterranean tribe of
"brokers" with connections within a highly compromised
administration willing to provide, or at least promise, a fix
even for cases governed by the most stringent laws.

"The illegal construction coming up within the protected area
of Old Goa is a classic case of how powerful and influential
people can pressurise, bribe, threaten and manipulate the
bureaucracy and system to get permissions, where it is
absolutely not possible to get permissions," Fr Noel D'Costa,
a priest with the Goa Archdiocese said.

Fr D'Costa praised the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI),
Goa Circle, for standing up to the pressure to withdraw its
objections to the project. The ASI's investigation of the
documents brought to light the extent of the fraud and
misrepresentation in the case, he said.

The high court, however, set aside the ASI's orders to stop
work.

According to the documents presented in the apex court which
has admitted the petition, though the original owners of the
property, Jose Maria de Gouveia Pinto, his wife and sister
sold the land to Munot and Lotlikar in 2015, applications for
"reconstruction of an ancestral house" (which never existed
there in the first place, says the ASI) and a green signal
from the director-general ASI was sought as late as January
2020 in the name of the Gouveia Pintos.

Under the law, only repairs to an existing
structure are allowed in a protected zone. And all
that stood on the property, the Goa ASI reported,
was but a small, dilapidated hut used usually to
store coconuts. Currently, the construction of a
397 square metre one-storied structure is underway.

To back the claim that a "19th century ancestral house" had
indeed existed on the property but had somehow been blown
away "in a cyclone that hit Goa in 1992", Suvarna Lotlikar
(co-owner of the property) appended photographs of a house,
only to have her bluff called by the ASI.

[Goanet] BJP's Shaina N.C., Spouse, Set To Pull Out of Controversial Project at Old Goa (Devika Sequeira, TheWire)

In the real estate frenzy that
has gripped Goa currently, even
protected sites have become
vulnerable to land sharks.The
Viceroy's Arch, Old Goa.

Munot and Lotlikar's wife, Suvarna Suraj Lotlikar, are
co-owners of the property in question which they acquired in
two separate sale deeds executed on the same day in May 2015.

An interesting link.

Beyond a few stray and casual times, when in India, I didn’t have the
opportunity of coming closely in contact with any converted Christian
Maharastrian Brahmins. That may be because as the article says, most tried to
conceal their Christian background.

I feel sorry for their angst while drowning in nationalist Hindu culture in
order to preserve their Brahmin privilege. No one should be subject to those
continuous personal conflicts and fears.

I don’t think even if they fled India along with the British (like the
Anglo-Indians), they would have been too happy elsewhere. Their Hindu culture
and traditions would have prevented it. They might have made it in the
Caribbean countries where Hindus and Christians mix and intermarry with ease
but then most of those people with Indian heritage were low caste rather than
Brahmin.

[Goanet] Mourning abd Wailing for our son

2021-09-24 Thread Nelson Lopes
25 Sept
A birthday to remember
To assure u r not lost forever
A darling brother , a loving son
The plan and will of God be done

The agony will last and so the pain
AS hopes NONE to see or meet again
Trying in vain to accept and regain
Heartaches to end in grave remain

No matter how much we miss and sigh
No reason or answer to search why grieving ,life must go we try
Tears are dry as we cry

Sisters are here to comfort and be near
Missing the one who was loved and dear,
Your absence around is loud and clear
Our prayers , and best wishes do hear

Time and years pass. Your memory will last
The shadow of gloom will forever cast,
In a flash and suddenly you depart
Shattering our minds and breaking our hearts.

God gave and He took you away
Enjoyed briefly Your company and play
The joyoud moment was always Your birthday.
The saddest event was departure day

The year has passed ,quickly and fast
Cherished memories will forever last
Grieving ,mourning over the past
Aspirations and plans hopes were vast

As you lie forlon silently in the grave
We above attempt to be bold and brave
Efforts and prayers in vain to save
Sorry mom is the heart wrenching message you gave

Good bye ,farewell my son u were hope

In your absence , need strength to cope
God's plan will always prevail
Wailing, crying complaining of no avail

Re: [Goanet] The Goan Inquisition

2021-09-24 Thread alan machado
Leonara Caldeira was not Goan. She was a Spanish Jew whose family emigrated
to Portugal where she was converted and became a Cristaos-Novas. Being
widowed she left for Cochin with her son and two daughters. She established
a thriving business which drew her into contact with Jews living in the
neighbouring part of Cochin ruled by the Cochin Raja.
Goa's Inquisition was not involved in her arrest and trial. The first
inquisitors arrived in Goa only in December 1560, well after Caldeira and
19 other Cristaos-Novas (10 from Cochin, 10 from Goa) were put on a ship
for Lisbon. She was the only one burnt. Widows constituted a major
percentage of those who were subjected to this terrifying ordeal, not just
in Portugal but throughout Europe. It was the time of witch-burning in the
Protestant north.
We know of a number of the 20 who were released within months of the
auto-da-fe, a clear indication that the trial was intended to remove
Cristao-Novas from Cochin's commercial scene. One, Jacome Olivares,
emigrated to Istanbul.

Regarding leniency, there are directives from the king to this effect.
Among them are alvaras extending relief to "culprits" for two offences as
well as making new converts free from prosecution for a number of years.
The intention was never to drive people away. The intention had always been
to draw new converts firmly into the Portuguese orbit. Every ruler knows
that to retain his kingdom he needs to retain his people and ensure
conditions of security and peace so that the economy flourishes. This is
not achieved by terrorising subjects. It was purely a matter of practical
necessity.

[Goanet] THAT VEIL OF SECRECY AT GOA RAJ BHAVAN MUST BE LIFTED

2021-09-24 Thread Aires Rodrigues
All Raj Bhavans across the country and even the Rashtrapati Bhavan come
under the purview of the Right to Information Act which was enacted to
ensure Transparency and Accountability in Governance.

But for over a decade Goa Raj Bhavan has not been submitting itself to this
Transparency law by strangely claiming that it is not a ‘Public Authority’.
There is need to rectify this decade long anomaly and ensure that our Raj
Bhavan does not remain the sole Raj Bhavan in the country, not complying
with this much needed law. The Raj Bhavan must lead by example in ensuring
transparency and openness in Governance within the State of Goa by not
depriving information to citizens.

In recent times good governance in Goa has been lacking with trust between
the people and the government at an all-time low. So this single act of
empowering the people to obtain information from the Raj Bhavan, the
highest public institution in the State and respecting the rule of law will
send a powerful message of reinstatement of good governance in the state
with a citizen-centric approach of transparency, openness and
accountability. It would be in the best interests of the democratic
principles and the Constitutional mandate of the RTI Act.
