[Goanet] Notes : The Church in Bombay.
With thanks to Rev. Joseph Velinkar SJ. of the Heras Institute Of History. Although India was within the jurisdiction of the Patronage power of the king of Portugal, Rome and the Office of Propagation of the Faith, or Propaganda, decided to appoint Vicars Apostolic in areas that were not served spiritually. The vicarate in Bijapur became the Great Mogul's and stretched south to Burma. In 1720, the Carmelite priest occupying the position assumed jurisdiction over Bombay, at the request of the British !THis vicarate of the Moghul would soon become the vicarate of Bombay Bassein fell to the Marathas and the churches in Salcette were lost. The closing of Jesuit institutions lead to a declineof Catholics for lack of education and influence. Restoration would only begin in 1814. The Italian Carmelites were in Bombay from 1720 to 1745, when hurdles arose. The archbishop of Goa,insisting on theright of Patronage, demande they obtain his permission to perform all priestly duties. A state of disharmony followed, and soon the British got involved. The Carmelite head of Bombay was expelled, only to return in 1773. After some years, churches under British jurisdiction were withdrawn from the control of the bishop of Goa and restoredto the Carmelite bishop of Bombay, a volte face for the governor of Bombay. Double Jurisdiction Was introduced in 1794 and four churches were to be served by the Carmelite mission and two: Gloria and Salvacao along with Cavel chapel by Portuguese priests. The Company gave the people the right to reject a vicar named by the bishop. The Bombay government next claimed the right of sanction in the appointment of parish priests. In the case of Salcette, the civil regime denied the Goa Archbishop all rights of appointments. In 1823 civil war broke out between the king, Manuel who was supported by religious orders and the party of Queen Maria Gloria. The latter won and initiated a process of church persecution. All religious orders were suppressed and relations with the Holy See broken off. The Portuguese government neglected the management of church affairs. The Holy See stepped in and created vicarates in Madras, Bengal, and Ceylon, which Portugal opposed.
[Goanet] WILL BSNL SERVICES IN GOA RESURRECT?
It is appalling that the telephones at even most government offices have not been functioning. In times when the communication technology has been advancing everywhere, the BSNL telephone services in Goa are in utter dire straits. Less said the better on BSNL’s internet services. Its connectivity all over and especially in the villages is extremely pathetic. Even where the network exists, the speed is extremely slow which is further frustrating. This has been very adversely affecting students who are on online classes and also people at large being unable to access online services provided by the government and other institutions. Fortunately our Courts have resumed physical hearings. It is high time that the now dysfunctional BSNLwhich has been in total disarray, gets its act together. With technology advancing world wide, the importance, benefits and urgency of having state of the art internet connectivity with access and speed has become significantly greater. The pitfalls of not having one like most of our villages in Goa are sadly experiencing is absolutely unacceptable. Progress claimed by the Government cannot be just on paper and mere loud talk as the people need to experience and feel that real change for the better. Adv. [Goanet] Aspirations And Realities
There are aspirations and there are realities. In Goa, never the ‘twain shall meet. Aires Rodrigues aspiration: to be Panjim’s MLA and clear the city of everything undesirable. Reality: if history is anything to go by, he will lose his deposit let alone lose. Pramod Sawant aspiration: Goa is a safe place. Reality: It is so overrun with crime of every kind, Putin must be envying the man’s security. Goa Govt aspiration: To make Goa a tourist destination for well heeled discerning tourists. Reality: With current dirt and filth in the towns, even low budget Out of State tourists attracted by low liquor prices are looking for other places. Tourist aspiration: Goa Miles will usher in decent taxi prices. Reality: Ripping off tourists is in the blood of Goan service providers of all kinds. Diaspora aspiration: I will settle in Goa in my sunset golden years to be back with my people. Reality: I’m going back. This is not what I expected. Note: Reality or not, I hope Aires wins. Roland. Re: [Goanet] CHIEF MINISTER PRAMOD SAWANT MUST BE MODEST AND TRUTHFUL
Dear Adv Aires Rodrigues, Goans must be thankful for your letter on Goa's CM Sawant, showing a citizen's interest and concerns. I guess that this Sawant chap behaves in that typical BJP fashion - full of himself like his master Modi. Fancy using three jeeps for his personal protection. Did he bother to ask permission from the other officials and how could the others restrain him? Wonder what's his record of public works for Goa citizens. It is worth noting your comment: "Such arrogance and abuse of authority was never ever witnessed in Goa." Now that his office term is coming to an end, he may be considering all sorts of ways of getting a renewal or may be he will just beg Modi and the Master will agree. From comments, this Sawant chap needs to be replaced and what better successor than you, Aires, who has enlightened us so much on Goa issues in GoaNet. You seem truly devoted to Goa. But, given the BJP ethics, Modi might coolly plant a new CM of his own choice. Thanks again for your letter in GoaNet. Eddie -- Original Message -- From: "Aires Rodrigues" To: "goanet" Sent: Thursday, 21 Oct, 21 At 22:38 Subject: [Goanet] CHIEF MINISTER PRAMOD SAWANT MUST BE MODEST AND TRUTHFUL It was amusing to hear Goa’s accidental Chief Minister Pramod Sawant claiming in the Legislative Assembly that the alleged rising Crime rate is not at all an issue and that Goa is a very safe destination. May we ask the Chief Minister, if that is the case, why he is moving around with an unprecedented three security escort jeeps for his personal protection? In fact the total fleet of police personnel entrusted with the Chief Minister’s security would be enough to man a Police Station.Needless to state one fails to understand as to how the Director General of Police has been allowing such huge unwarranted and impermissible deployment of security cover for the Chief Minister in a so claimed very safe Goa. May we also know as to how Chief Minister Pramod Sawant manages to get the traffic signal lights near the Panaji ferry jetty and at Campal on the Dayanand Bandodkar Marg all switched off when his convoy of vehicles zooms through? Our elected representatives should at all times act respectfully and dutifully. Such arrogance and abuse of authority was never ever witnessed in Goa. As Pramod Sawant approaches the fag end of his tenure maybe he should start getting used to acting as a common man, humble and honest. Adv. Aires Rodrigues
