[Goanet] ON THE WRONG TRACK

2022-01-16 Thread John Eric Gomes
*PRIMITIVE RITUALS AND WINDS OF CHANGE*
Even during a raging pandemic, people refuse to give up primitive rituals
and behave sensibly as educated citizens! The holding of Jallikattu
festival where Covid protocols are thrown to the winds, two
participants gored to death, fifty two others injured, amidst cruelty to
frightened bulls clearly witnessed live on television is pathetic! In Surat
a bovine wedding is held in a temple, reportedly at least 10,000 people
throng to witness it and all attendees being well fed after the event! In
Goa we have to resort to elaborate police protection for people to
celebrate the annual feast of St Joseph Vaz. The lack action after a Dharma
Sansad where Hindu Seers call for genocide of Muslims, Scribes not in
uniform denied entry at a RSS event does not augur well for a happy nation
and destroying what the world admires of our Democracy with unity in
diversity! My Hindu friends agree this is a pathetic and sad state of
affairs but are perhaps scared to stand up and be counted to show
disapproval of such polarization of our nation. The spirit of our
Constitution mandates the majority look after the minorities. All
communities must function in peace and tolerance for different views and
freedom of each citizen as provided in law. It is the duty of the State to
enforce law and order, not give in to vigilantes in a "prevention better
than cure proactive and just mode" and not slap UAPA and sedition and
other laws indiscriminately! The CJI has spoken and even ex armed forces
chiefs , prominent bureaucrats and others have written to the PM in alarm
and he still remains silent at time of writing!

[Goanet] Goem kabaar re! (Goa is finished, man!)

2022-01-16 Thread Rajan Parrikar
The refrain I have heard in the past weeks I have been in Panjim is that
Goa is gone for good. The most common speech doing the rounds is, “Goem
aamche kaabaar re!”

These whiners who now come and tell me that Goa is done for are the same
folks who took pains to avoid me during the years when their voice may have
mattered. At that time they were spitting fire at me because of my public
criticism of their beloved “Bhaiee.”

Here is an example of one who still has her head up her you-know-what.
She’s related to me, but name isn’t important (I’ve redacted it) -

https://www.parrikar.org/misc/Idiot.jpg

To summarize:

Goa concretized beyond recognition? - check

Goans reduced to a minority? - check

Delhi pigs takeover of Goa? - check

Goa turned into an Indian slum? - check

Casinos takeover of Panjim & beyond? - check

Law and order in Goa gone to the dogs? - check

All of the above to get worse in the years to come? - check

But not to worry. In the words of Goanet celebrity, faux journo, and
renowned dimwit Frederick N - It is all an exaggeration, man.

Re: [Goanet] Odds In Favor Of Indian-Origin Chancellor Rishi Sunak As Pressure Mounts On British Prime Minister Boris Johnson To Resign

2022-01-16 Thread Anita Dias
Hi. Thx
Oh wow.
Good to know that fact finding is done.

It depends on how it is all perceived and time lines.
What is also actually going on behind the scenes.
Once the Portuguese opened up trading routes/sea faring lanes to India
-interest was generated within other European powers. (The land route was held
by the Ottoman empire for the longest time- an alternative route had to be
found ie sea to the countries of the East -not only India)
The 1st way to go about checking out a country of course is through trade.
That opens windows not only on the materials available, but also the people and
its rulers. Religions involved. The behaviour. The langauges. More interest if
fragmented. I think India's population was well over 200 mill...let alone it
had existed since well over the BCE...India is quoted in the Bible btw;
purchase of its elephants and the mahouts! Britain's pop was a mere 2 million
or so.

There were all these nawabs, different empires etc ...warring with each other.
But also the 2 main faith groups- Muslims and Hindus---sometimes at peace with
each other; but quite often at loggerheads. All this was noted by the British
East India Trading company officials. Reported back to Britain.
Though a few on the ground---they were handpicked for perceptive skills.
Britain was not going to send shiploads of its army without strategies.
Britain had not fared well with its North American expeditions. It began to
look eastwards.
The Brits have an interesting way of thinking--insular being an island nation
but also subtle strategies mixed with protective, predatory skills.

Though huge tracts of land were seized in 1757 (War of Plassey)...much work,
speculation, reporting and planning among BEITCo/British officials/ the govt
had been occurring since 1600. Could have been much earlier. On how to decimate
the richest country in the world at the time...ie India.
(To change the Indian economy to a colonial economy.
To pit Muslims v Hindus)
Hence my calculation of 400---give or take a few years!

They could not be bothered with Goa. It was already held by another Eurpoean
power!
Britain did observe much though.
BUT
Britain had decided it was going after the rest of India! To make it ---its
Jewel in the Crown!

Anita...mea culpa! But impressed with the interest generated- I don't mind
being corrected either. I am always on a learning curve

Not only in British EA Mel, but also in British India which then became

only went to one country!

Comment:

The Brits ruled in India for 200 years . From the war of Plassey in 1757 to
1947 Independence of India.
The British East India (Tea) Company was created in 1600, so there were few
Brits in India after that.

Now when it comes to 400 year rule, the Romans ruled Britannia for about 400
years from 43 AD to 410 AD although Julius Cesar was in Britain with his army
in 55BC. When the Romans left, Britain was invaded by the Saxons and in 1106
the Normans under William The Conqueror took over after the Battle of Hastings.

The Portuguese on the other hand were in India over 400 years from 1505 to 1961
although Vasco Da Gama visited some Indian ports in 1498.

I thought you might like to know.

This would aggravate the situation the situation <<>>>Another 8 million uncouth would rush to GOA !!!

Took me a long time to consult my uncle on Mars but based on his wisdom I
suggest the following :

First at every entry point a chip be installed to monitor behavior so that
anyone, over drinking, abandoning slippers and plastic / glass bottles on
the shore will be stopped at departure point.

Two such fellows then must be sent to the sites and clean up their dirt.
They should then load all this trash in their cars or luggage and be sent
back to the place of origin

Three, such persons should not be allowed back to Goa.

[Goanet] MAY THIS ELECTION CAMPAIGN BE A WORTHY ONE

2022-01-16 Thread Aires Rodrigues
With Goa scheduled to elect its 40 new MLAs in less than a month from now,
the election fever will heighten over the next few days.

In the last couple of decades there have been many progressive changes at
the manner in which polls are held, more particularly in the way the
election campaign is conducted. But a lot more remains to be done to ensure
free and fair polls. Restoring the independence and autonomy of the
Election commission is crucial. Plugging the loopholes in the
Anti-Defection law is also vital and must be done with no further delay.
There has to be Zero tolerance to defections. This is the very essence of
democratic processes. The ghastly spectacle of those elected pursuing the
agenda of their vested motives must come to an end. Betrayal of people's
mandate by merrily switching parties in the lust for power and financial
greed must be summarily punished.

There should be a total ban on election hoardings and no plastic flags or
posters and wall paintings. More importantly no loud speakers. There has to
also be a total crackdown on fake news and distribution of cash and other
incentives in exchange for votes. In this regard, implementation of
regulations and laws in force should be a priority.

As these elections are being held in the midst of a raging pandemic, the
focus must be on digital campaigning through social media as a mode to
connect with the voters.

Those contesting elections must act as good human beings and respect human
values. They need to value the principles of life and adhere to good
behavior in society.

During the election campaign, candidates and the political parties should
not make false and fake promises. Those that can never be trusted by the
people for delivering on their commitments and promises are not capable of
ensuring good Governance.

[Goanet] Goans who worked in the Mad Railway Line and for the German Railway in the Then DOA or German East Africa.

One of my major investments when I was in UCLA was to order the two
volumes on the *Permanent Way.* The postage was more than the cost of the
hardbound books. Total cost BP 5.
As several of you might knowduring the construction of the Uganda
railway the main problem was Man Eathing Lions (I suppose lions also ate
women) ..You have heard of the Man Eaters of TSAVO.was there a Goan
hunter who helped in getting rid of this menace
TwoThere is mention of a certain Mr Braganza who worked for the Germans
on the Tanga railway.
Basically there were more Goans in Tanga, Bagamoyo then in Dar es Salaam.
Why did the Germans have thembecause they knew how to write in the

I have been reading about the Ismaili Community .Itis remarkable what

Goa Opinion Poll Anniversary.
16 Jan 1967 - 2022 (55 years)
Some questions -
1) Have we the Goans squandered our advantage of the anti-merger?
2) Does Goa today have any of it's identity left?
3) What will be the situation in another 15 years?
4) Will Goan exodus and migrant influx change ratios towards Goa not having
much Goans in future living on it's land?
5) Despite of identifying the same crooked anti Goan politicians and Delhi
based political parties, why do Goans still run after same old anti Goa
ideologies and allow themselves to bleed, hurt and lose their land?
6) What is the future of Goa's coming generations in Goa?
7) Is Goa sitting on a huge environmental, health disaster which is fast
approaching and will damage its land and population?
Will Goans rise to protect their identity, language and heritage from
maurading outside forces out to take Goa for a ride for their own selfish
agendas?
Points to ponder as this being an election season.

[Goanet] Profile of the Goan Voter!

2022-01-16 Thread Joao Barros-Pereira
With the approaching state elections our politicians are coming under
the magnifying lens and party ideology under the microscope. In the
heat of the moment the Goan voter has all but been overlooked.

We need to take a hard and close look at the Goan voter as the voters
will decide our future government.
This is a fact and the reality.

And so, what are we looking at?

I invite readers to make their own comments so we can get to know more
about this strange phenomenon known as the Goan voter!

Here are my two bits: the other day talking about politics I said to a
woman voter that we need to give new faces a chance and her reply was
that they are worse than the old politicians. I was dumbstruck.

I was under the impression new faces have not been tried and tested as
yet and have a blank scoreboard unlike the oldies who are burdened
with excess baggage.

I spoke to a man voter who was determined to vote for the Congress
Party and would listen to nothing and no one. His argument was simple:
the Congress Party is fully corrupt from top to bottom and so we can
get much more from this party than any other. We have the best chance
of sharing in the corruption.

Please comment.

Re: [Goanet] Odds In Favour Of Indian-Origin Chancellor Rishi Sunak As Pressure Mounts On British Prime Minister Boris Johnson To Resign

2022-01-16 Thread Jules Fausto Mendonca de Sa
Hi Goanetters,

Fingers crossed that the UK Parliamentary circus will see a change of
ringmaster in the next few weeks if not soon. It is abhorrent that a party
which is supposed to be a moral barometer has stooped so low as to refusing to
have a liability of a PM removed from office. Did they flush it down the
toilet? In the 1960s and 1970s many capable people were discarded or resigned
immediately after scandals.

Yes, Dishy Rishi is a front runner to replace BJ, but would the UK public be
pleased with that? Will be great to see. If the following outcomes come to pass
- Dishy Rishi as PM of UK and Antonio Costa winning re-election in Portugal
(despite his unpopularity amongst many of the people I know) and added to this
the fact that Dr Leo Varadkar is due to become (PM) Taoiseach on 1st January
2023 as part of the power share agreement - we could end up with Three people
of Indian origin as Heads of Government in three most Western European
nations. Holland too, recently elected a MP of Goan origin - Marielle Paul
hailing from Colvale.

Kind regards

Fausto

Another great take on the story!

I must admit I’d forgotten the progeny of the East African Asians became
shopkeepers, much like Margaret Thatcher’s parents, and became as right
wing as her. They took over the Conservative Party.

Mervyn, far-seeing as usual! You are not much for that ‘he’s a right
winger, but he’s our right winger’ philosophy.

Thank you for bringing us up to our senses, Mervyn. Dishi Rishi is not only
the richest man in the British Parliament, but his father in law is one of
those Indian billionaires!

Oh vey!

Not only in British EA Mel, but also in British India which then became
British Raj (a total of 400 years of ) and in every country of the
so-called 'Commonwealth'.  A misnomer if ever there was one. As all the wealth
only went to one
country!---
Comment:
The Brits ruled  in India for 200 years . From the  war of Plassey in 1757 to
1947 Independence of India. The British East India (Tea) Company was created in
1600, so there were few Brits in India after that.
