Re: [Goanet] How four Christian votes made Pakistan possible - The Friday Times - Naya Daur
Whichever way you look at it, at the present time the manifold contributions that the Christian community have made to both the countries has been forgotten. Both Pakistan with pacification of their extreme Muslim element and India with the current Hindutva outlook have been giving or are on the way to giving a hard time to their Christians. As the article says, educated Christians have been fleeing westwards but the poorer Christians are caught between a Rock and a Hard Place. Too poor to afford emigration and too discriminated against to enjoy equal status and opportunity with the majority community. On a personal note, I have met more than a few Christian Punjabis both from India and Pakistan who are well educated and in good jobs in Canada. Fortunately for their community they strive their utmost to facilitate others to do likewise. [Goanet] WITH EVERY GOAN SUFFERING, VOTING FOR THE BJP IS A MORTAL SIN
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant better known as Property Sawant within his own BJP has quickly risen from rags to riches. Pramod Sawant’s total income for 2010-2011 was only Rs 4,51,653 and savings including fixed Deposits a mere Rs 55, 139. So will he confess how he became a multi crorepati so swiftly? Amongst the properties purchased by Pramod Sawant is land admeasuring 16,480 sq mts in Bordem at Bicholim for Rs 1,31,84,000 and another 19,989 sq mts also at Bordem for Rs 1,23,34,000. Twenty four sale deeds were executed within a span of two years by Pramod Sawant’s partnership firm at the Sub- Registrar in Bicholim itself. Today he has properties all over Goa and has extended his crave into neighboring Karnataka and Maharashtra. As Chief Minister Pramod Sawant went to the extent of grabbing a plot of land bearing Survey No. 60/8 in Cotombi at Bicholim by deviously claiming to be a Mundkar. On 26th September 2019 he filed an application claiming declaration as Mundkar. Despite his application being untenable in law, he was speedily declared as Mundkar. He falsely claimed that he was staying in that so called mundkarial house when infact was residing in his bungalow at Housing Board Colony in Sanquelim. It is appalling that Pramod Sawant has stooped to such low levels in seeking to illegally grab land by misusing his Power and the provisions of the Mundkar Act to enrich himself. We have seen Pramod Sawant's greed for property turning to Avarice. From Pramod Sawant to Property Sawant and Mundkar Sawant. He is Goa’s first Chief Minister to be declared a Mundkar. So to liberate Goa from the Corrupt and Communal BJP, let us on February 14 th wisely vote for the Congress- Goa Forward alliance which is our only hope. Let us not allow our precious votes to be divided by parties like AAP, TMC and others who are acting as agents of the BJP. Adv. [Goanet] Development cauldron
Development cauldron The reasons for defections and poaching are rooted into parties strategies Most of the projects ,development are alloted to places from where the ruling party candidates are elected. It means there is no uniform distribution of projects throughout length and breadth of the country. THIS strategy operates at the centre and state level with impunity. The legislators in opposition have to beg the ruling party to allot funds for their Constituency. It looks like that wealth resources of the State or Country are at the sweet disposal of ruling party alone to allot it as per whimps and fancies. It helps propaganda machine at elections time to show case development. Naturally the opposition are left high and dry to show any projects that have benefited their Constituency, as they are completely helpless at the mercy of ruling dispensation . Hence this is lopsided strategy to strangulate opposition . The only redeeming factor at the centre is that every MP is allotted discretionary funds at his disposal for necessary action.Once again it is also allotted to MLA's of his own party and discrimination continues It would be advisable to have a commission including members of all parties for equal distribution of funds spread over all constituencies .This will never be accepted as it would diminish , undermine their political advantage of reelection process. Hence those in opposition at the Centre and States are starved of funds for any development, unless they secretely or openly make common cause with the ruling party whatever that it means. Hence the opposition is left to criticise at every step to show their existence and relevance. Federalism must lead to equitable distibution of resources of wealth and uniform development of all regions irrespective of ruling party' s political hold Nelson Lopes Chinchinim

[Goanet] Trouble in Paradise: Goa's Unemployment Crisis (Mint, 11/2/2021)
https://www.livemint.com/politics/news/rising-unemployment-saga-in-goan-paradise-11644516419105.html On a crisp winter evening in the North Goa village of Tivim, things are heating up on stage as Manoj Parab launches into his trademark fiery denunciation of vote bank politics that favour outsiders over the indigenous “niz Goenkar”. “What is our place in this broken system,” he asks, “when our jobs and land are taken away?” Telling his youthful audience to “look for the football symbol when voting” he urges them to “show the world our revolution.” The familiar catchphrase of his Revolutionary Goans Party (RG) drives the crowd wild, everyone chanting the Konkani word for fire: “Uzzo! Uzzo!” Parab’s rally is just one more surreal aspect of Goa’s 2022 election season, which culminates at the polls on February 14. Here, the national media have remained agog, but the most significant story is nonetheless almost entirely off-camera. This is nativism, and the steadily burgeoning politics of disaffection, which has exploded from hashtags on social media directly onto the hustings. While every other party will likely swing that way in the future, it is Parab’s brand-new outfit riding the current wave. This eccentric debutant is the only political force other than the ruling BJP to contest all 40 seats. RG’s unabashedly anarchic appeal centres around its proposed The People of Goan Origin (POGO) bill, purporting to “protect the rights of the person of Goan origin of [the] State of Goa in respect of jobs, benefits of various government schemes, education.” At every raucous campaign appearance, Parab declares he will ensure the legislation gets tabled even if his party wins only one seat, and each time he says it the audience rises to give him a standing ovation. These rhetorical pyrotechnics are undoubtedly entertaining, especially because RG’s entire 2022 cohort – with the possible exception of Parab – is certain to lose their deposits once votes are counted. Nonetheless, the forces propelling his ramshackle party are not at all funny. They highlight the extensive dark side to Goa’s well-known economic report card as the richest state with the highest per-capita income. Right across two generations but with especially devastating effect over the past decade, there has been a comprehensive failure in the inter-related issues of higher education and jobs. To be sure, this is an exceedingly complicated picture. For just one example, looking exclusively at the five states heading to elections this month (the others are Uttar Pradesh, Manipur, Punjab and Uttarakhand), the NITI Aayog’s 2021 Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) appears to indicate that Goa is well ahead of the rest. Only 3.76% of its citizens – by contrast the percentage is 37.79% in UP - are registered as officially deprived, in the three weighted dimensions of education, health, and standard of living. It's more of the same when GDP is considered. According to the Centre for Economic Data and Analysis (CEDA), Goa ranks first in the country with an equivalent of roughly $22,000 per capita. That’s comfortably higher than China ($16,772), and dozens of other developing countries including Iran, Mexico, Thailand and Brazil. Those impressive numbers also translate to the size of bank deposits – three Goan cities are in the top 10 in India – as well as vehicle ownership and density, in which categories my deceptively quaint home town of Panjim perches atop the nation. Look beyond the bombast, however, and shadows intrude very rapidly. That same MPI reveals an unconscionable 25% of Goans are nutritionally under-served, and almost 10% are housing deprived. Meanwhile, ever since 2014, there has been an inexorable decline in economic growth, which fell behind the national rate for the first time in 2017, and has remained lagging ever since. One ominous corollary is government debt, which catapulted an eye-watering 53% over the past three years alone. Still growing fast over 2 crores, it adds up to an astonishing 5 lakhs for every family in the state. If all this weren’t worrisome enough, the unemployment data sets off every alarm bell. According to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, Goa’s unemployment rate – “computed as the number of persons not employed but willing to work and actively looking for a job as a percent of the total labour force” – has been stagnating around 12% for months, which is the highest of all the poll-bound states (compare to just 3% in UP). Relatedly, the employment rate which calculates “the total number of employed as a percentage of the working age population” has plummeted to under 32%. Out of every three potential employees in the state, only one has a job. Those are absolutely terrible numbers, but again do not reveal the entire picture. It is ill-conceived government policies which encouraged pharmaceuticals (some 12% of national production comes from Goa) and manufacturing, even though the vast majority of jobs i
[Goanet] Who is afraid of Muskan Khan? (Dhaka Tribune, 11/2/2021)
https://www.dhakatribune.com/op-ed/2022/02/11/who-is-afraid-of-muskan-khan Almost 100 years ago in his journal of resistance *Young India*, Mahatma Gandhi presciently wrote that “in spite of a multitude of separate jurisdictions, our ability to reach unity in diversity will be the beauty and test of our civilization.” Looking back 75 years after India’s independence, the results are far from desirable. The country is lurching into election season (five states go the polls this month, with two more later in the year) amidst an ugly conflagration of the politics of division, exclusion and bigotry. Whatever emerges from this toxic cauldron of resentments will be very far from the aspirations of the “father of the nation”. The latest incident dominating headlines took place earlier this week in and around Udupi, the bustling district on Karnataka’s coastline famous for its delicious food, where there have been weeks of stalemate between students who wear the hijab, and their government-run women’s college which suddenly declared the head covering was “not part of the uniform”. Riding her scooter into her own college on February 8, the 19-year-old aspiring lawyer Muskan Khan could never have anticipated what would happen next. In the video that went viral within hours of the incident, she was filmed parking her vehicle and striding to the college entrance to – as she told the media later – hand in her assignment for the day. Khan walks with confidence, but glances warily to her left. In a trice, the camera shows her mobbed by an unending stream of men wearing saffron scarves, and shouting “Jai Shri Ram” (or “victory to Lord Ram”). Anger flashes unmistakably in her eyes, but the young woman is visibly undaunted, and then - in an indelibly powerful image – she lifts her arm in defiance to shout “Allahu Akbar.” That footage set social media on fire. Veteran news anchor Rajdeep Sardesai responded quickly: “A new video from [Karnataka] shows a young student in a hijab being chased by Jai Shri Ram slogan shouting men. This is what bigotry does to a nation: divides us on dress, food and religion. When we should be worries about jobs for [the] young, we focus on their dress! Shameful. #HijabRow” A couple of hours later, Sardesai tweeted again with an important insight: “The harassed girl in [the] video shout Allah u Akbar as boys continue to scream Jai Shri Ram and follow her. Other videos show stone pelting between 2 groups. Simple Qs: where are [the Karnataka] cops in all this? Unless ahead of UP elections, someone wants religious divide to escalate?” This is an essential point. The first phase of elections began yesterday in Uttar Pradesh, the giant polity of over 200 million citizens at the heart of Indian democracy. It is widely perceived that whoever rules UP will inevitably control New Delhi, and it’s also generally understood that the current chief minister Ajay Bisht of the BJP (this monk-turned-politician is usually referred to by his religious title as Yogi Adityanath) is at severe risk of losing this campaign. “We are seeing today that the UP elections have become extraordinarily important for the BJP” said Dushyant Dave, the former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, to news anchor Faye D’Souza on February 8. “The feeling that is coming from UP is the tide is turning against the BJP. It knows that if it loses then it is likely to lose the [national] elections in 2024. Karnataka is a laboratory for UP. These footages of what is happening in Karnataka are actually meant for the crowds in Uttar Pradesh. I have no doubt that social media across the state is circulating them with a vengeance.” Nonetheless, even if the proximate cause of this week’s flareup is cynical political expediency, what is happening in Udupi also illustrates deeply worrisome broader trends. “These events show us how deep the radicalization has spread in Hindu society,” says Samar Halarnkar, the editor of Article 14, a website focused on research and reportage on issues related to the rule of law in India. Halarnkar is based in the capital of Karnataka in Bengaluru. He told me he’s especially worried by how radicalized young people seem to have become by fundamentalist organizations “nurtured and empowered by the entire ecosystem around India’s ruling party and its spiritual mentor, the RSS.” Pointing out that “coastal Karnataka has been ground zero for their experimentation over many years,” Halarnkar says, “it is a very highly literate area, with literacy well over 90%, and one of India’s most well-educated regions, so whenever people say that fundamentalism tends to decrease with literacy, I think this is clear evidence that it does not.” That last fact is particularly telling, because Karnataka has come to symbolize Indian aspirations, with its booming multinational information technology industries touted as perhaps the country’s greatest achievement since 1947. The logic is inexorable: if society can fall a
