[Goanet] White Pope Francis
Has turned the tables on the closed minded epoch of his German predecessor andbrought sea changes to the mind set and thinking of the Faith. This is the man who rode a bicycle through the alleys of Buenos slums, handing out his paycheck when Bishop of the city. He rejected all the pomp of his title, and the comfortof a palace, to occupy a barely furnished room in a convent. We have seen pictures. He orchestrated the elevation to sainthood of men and women who in the old setupwould not have been introduced to the world for likeness to piety and holiness. "This Eddy" first needs to introduce himself to us before we approve his bonafidesto rise to pontification. I agree he needs to bigger off, a la Saskatoon.
[Goanet] Goa’s Great Derangement (O Heraldo, 23/10/2022)
The rightwing American radio and media firebrand, Dr. Michael Savage, would often say on his shows that “liberalism is a mental disorder.” What he referred to as “liberalism” wasn’t its meaning in the classical sense, but the radical Leftwing politics best exemplified in today’s excrement-smeared and unsafe (for Asians especially, due to attacks by the non-white population) city of San Francisco, once a great city, a place I dearly loved. Dr. Savage may well amend his line to “Wokeism is a mental cancer.” We have now VM-bab quote that mental retard Greta Thunberg on climate. And Amitava Ghosh, the little brown sepoy on other heady issues. One of the characteristics of our time is the lectures we are subjected to day in and day out by people who had a hard time with 2nd Standard maths. But they feel emboldened to hold forth on “science” this and “science” that. Experts on climate, vaccines, and anything that helps them tell YOU how YOU should live your life. You either bow to their secular religion or you are a “bigot,” “denier,” “racist,” “conspiracy nut” and so on. The Indian version of this schmuck espouses all the tropes of his tribe in the West with the added burden of shitting on Hindus and Hindu tradition while claiming “we are not against Hindus, only against Hindutva.” I stopped read this babble from Vivek-bab after I saw the retard “Thunberg.” There can be no intelligent engagement with this pile of poo. Only ridicule. Dev borem korum, r
[Goanet] WILL THE TRAFFIC MAYHEM IN PANAJI EVER END?
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has made yet another tall promise, this time that the PWD, RTO and the Traffic Police will within 15 days prepare a plan to curtail road accidents. Let us hope that this assurance does not end up as the rest, never to be honoured. Goa desperately needs proper traffic management. Even the capital city is now without a Traffic cell, it having been senselessly shifted to Santa Cruz over a year ago. The traffic chaos in Panaji is horrendous. We had been assured that once the schools in the city were moved to Cujira that the traffic mess would ease. But it has just not happened. The very busy Dayanand Bandodkar Marg is a no parking – no stopping road but the Casino vehicles and Tourists taxis have been parking around the clock in total breach of law while two-wheelers are lying on the footpaths inconveniencing the pedestrians. The traffic police and transport department have not been acting against these blatant violations which makes one to believe that their palms are well greased by the Casino lobby. The traffic chaos near the Panaji Church is another nightmare while no action is being taken against double parking on the other two very busy roads of Panaji, 18th June Road and the Atmaram Borkar Road. It appears that Panaji, our once beautiful and serene capital is both offshore and onshore controlled and policed by the Casino Lobby and the politicians who are on their payroll or roulette wheel rather than by the Traffic Police. Road safety and the ability of innocent people to go about their normal business is left to chance with less odds of success by the day. A congested and chaotic capital is also an eyesore for the already diminishing number of quality tourists. Unless and until the Traffic Police is rid of corruption, demonstrates zero tolerance to road safety abuses and takes total control of our roads, proper traffic management will always prove to be impossible and innocent people will continue to suffer! Words rather than urgent action from the authorities will be just hot air or water under the Mandovi Bridge! Adv. [Goanet] Amitav Ghosh: The Colonial Roots of Present Crises. (October 2022)
Hola Aloha, Since I understand that Amitav Ghosh is a part time resident of Goa, I thought this interview of his might be of interest. The url of the interview is provided, but since Felix Stalder made the effort to nicely edit it for nettime, I have c+p-ed it here. I am presently reading his (AG's) novel A Sea of Poppies' where the dismal effects of colonialism on land use and tenure were already starkly pointed out. An American friend of mine, who's also a fan of AG now describes himself as 'Ghoshist', which, at least to French ears, makes for big LOL (cf 'gauchiste', ie. leftist) Cheers, p+7D! The Colonial Roots of Present Crises. 19 OCTOBER 2022 Looking around at the energy crisis, the drift to the extreme right and the mounting climate disasters that the world is facing, the common thread of colonial exploitation may not be obvious. On the sidelines of the Ecopolis festival, we spoke to acclaimed writer Amitav Ghosh who offered a historical perspective on world events from the Pakistan floods to the war in Ukraine and the challenges ahead for green and progressive forces. https://www.greeneuropeanjournal.eu/the-colonial-roots-of-present-crises/ Green European Journal: This August, Pakistan was hit with floods that left 50 million people displaced and which killed over 1500 people. It will take months for the water to recede. As a south Asian writer who has written intensively on climate impacts on the region, what is your perspective on the floods and the global response? Amitav Ghosh: Catastrophes in the Global South barely seem to register, but this time it was clear that people were paying attention. Maybe it’s the scale of the catastrophe but it did seem to make an impact on people around the world. Is it enough? No, I don’t suppose it is. Considering the scale of the catastrophe, it should have been front-page news everywhere. This was a disaster foretold because there were major precursors to this flood, in 2010 and 2012. After Antarctica, Pakistan has the most glaciers – over 700. Himalayan glaciers are melting at an incredible pace. We’ve also seen the same problem with terrifying glacier lake outbursts flooding villages in India. Pakistan is singularly ill-adapted to coping with a flood like this. Whenever we see these climate catastrophes – and it’s true as much of the Global North as it is Global South – these events are hugely worsened by historic interventions in the landscape. One of the reasons why so many people were displaced in these floods is because, going back to colonial times, many nomads who moved with the rhythms of the river were forced to settle by river banks. To colonial and modern developmental regimes, nomadism of any kind is very offensive. They want people to be stable and settled. The areas where these communities settled had a very strange land tenure system because the British gave out huge chunks of land to Punjabi aristocrats to maintain their support. It is another example of how historical anthropogenic interventions are greatly worsening climate disasters. Many Pakistani spokespeople have been calling for reparations and the floods have amplified the calls for loss and damages, but let’s see what comes from it. Green European Journal: In The Nutmeg’s Curse, you use the sci-fi term terraforming to describe how empire transformed the world’s terrain. Is the degree to colonialism transformed the land and how land is lived and organised undervalued? Amitav Ghosh: Absolutely. The most terraformed part of India is the Punjab, where the British built many canals and distributed enormous quantities of land. Why? Because they wanted to maintain the support of their Punjabi soldiers, the mercenaries on who they depended after the great Indian uprising against colonial rule in 1857. This intensive terraforming was worsened through the interventions of the Green Revolution, especially on the Indian side. Now a silent catastrophe is unfolding in this part of north India. Since the 1950s, farmers have been pumping up fossil water with subsidised electricity. Today the aquifer is completely exhausted and the traditional forms of irrigation used before the British canals have been neglected. Agriculture will soon become impossible within this region Green European Journal: Mike Davies’s Late Victorian Holocausts describes how British imperialism destroyed all the mechanisms and institutions that had long existed in south Asia for famine control and water management. Amitav Ghosh: Indeed. They were destroyed in the service of the ideology of free trade. In the past, Indian kings and emperors would prepare for and respond to famines with massive state interventions: distributing food, storing supplies, and so on. The British, literally while famines were unfolding, would refuse to do anything that would interfere with the laws of free trade. Charities were prevented from intervening, just as we see now in A

[Goanet] Don’t Allow A Stray To Lead You Astray!
This government has surprised everyone by asking people to join in to improve road safety in Goa. For the first time the public has been invited to join in something which affects their lives. Do you smell a rat or do you have you a cold? No consultation on other major issues especially double tracking, taking away flights from Dabolim Airport to Mopa Airport, and the future location of IIT - only road safety in Goa? Why? Anyway, something is better than nothing? The condition of the roads are a matter of life and death, and for this reason you get invited? It is not a complex problem only complicated by this and other previous governments because the heads of the governments are always buried in the sands of Goa. Arrogance all year long with Diwali as a holiday? Too great a number of cars and not enough space? How do we measure sustainability and road safety? At least a dedicated parking lot which is mandatory! Will the government do it or they don’t have the political will and courage? No Chief Minister like Manohar Parrikar anymore? People in Goa park anywhere and everywhere and for this reason among others there are too many cars in too small a space. And of course bad roads will increase road accidents. The bad roads along with bad road lights which too often are not working for one reason or another coupled with pot holes on the roads are no less a homemade recipe for fatal accidents! Is the government guilty of murder and who will take responsibility? Drinking and driving is not the only reason for road accidents fatal or not. Transport Minister please take note carefully. No need to hammer this point to death. Make sure a driver’s license is a reward for being able to drive properly and not a reward for under the table arm wrestling. This is one way to road safety. Other people can add additional points to make the roads safe and not death traps. As they say, last but not least are the stray dogs who often are a cause of accidents for people who ride on two wheelers as the dogs suddenly come to life and doggedly chase the vehicle. If there is a pot hole it might be a small grave which might not be a tight fit but is fatal all the same.
Re: [Goanet] Pope Francis issues lame apology for abuse & murder of thousands of Canadian natives
I see you've indulged in your favourite pastime of 'Pope bashing' and Catholic Church 'bashing' - something that obviously gives you great pleasure Eddie. Pope Francis is the first Pontiff to meet the indigenous people of Canada and offer apologies for the disgraceful treatment of their people by members of the Catholic Church in the past. In addition, I understand that some financial compensation has been made. Perhaps you forget that the Pope has a long history of suffering from sciatica, a very painful knee condition. This is why he had to use a wheelchair - certainly not to avoid kneeling. No one is condoning the evils of the past, but I think Pope Francis has made every effort to try and heal the wounds of the past and it seems pointless trying to have a 'bash' at the Pope or the Catholic church every time. Surely, there must be other passtimes you can engage in?? [Goanet] Pope Francis issues lame apology for abuse & murder of thousands of Canadian natives
Pope Francis decided to visit Canada to apologise for the massive abuse and killings of thousands of indigenous Canadians (including children) over decades. And all he could do was issue a verbal apology for the damage done. What sort of Catholic God would allow the natives to be abused and killed by the white clerics without inflicting punishment on the evil doers? And was a plain verbal apology enough? Why was substantive financial and material reparations not dispensed over decades for the damage done? It's disgraceful that the white Pope, ultimately responsible for the evil done to the Natives sat comfortably on a chair while he was wheeled about on open ground accompanied by Native leaders. Why didn't he have the good sense and humility to adopt a kneeling posture and move kneeling to indicate appreciation of the sufferings of the Natives? Such a posture would remind him of the pain inflicted on the Natives. The apology as offered seems quite inadequate and suggests a lack of understanding of the sufferings meted out to the Natives by the holy white men. Eddie Ray
