Balbir Singh Senior in Canada and I have been wondering which will be the best place in Goa to hold the camp for the Beijing games. There are a number of retired hockey olympians in Goa who may be able to help you. Also Goa Leaders like Parrikar etc are very enthusiastic to help. I may be in India too on a long leave. Manohar Parrikar wanted the Beijing Olympic hockey goldmedals in Goa to kick off the Golden Age of Goa ! We have waited for nearly 50 years and the patience is running low. So where would you like to hold the hockey camp in Patiala, Bangakore, Bombay or Goa ? PCCCE in Verna is also a good place with the blessings of Fr Agnel and the Pilar Fathers. If camp is not held in Bangalore or Patiala there will be no Gansh or Coac Bhangu to deal with. Vece Paes, John Correia and the others like Cedrric D'Souza may come to Goa.This team with a Goan Coach should be a memorable one for Goa.If camp is held in Goa there may be a -possibility of getting more good Goan hockey pla yers like Merwyn, Markie etc. We overseas tempo givers will make sure all is well in Beijing and that there are no favouritisms to any team ! So which part of Goa are you from Joaquim? From your accent youre surely not a Bardezkar. Manohar may even make you a sports minister in his government ! Let me know Your thoughts as soon as possible. This could be the turning point for our state ! [Goanet] Why did Willy Lose ?
Hi Manohar, I am wondering why Wilfred Mesquitta lost the Election. There may be a few possible reasons: 1. He may not be a "Holier Than Thou" Candidate - Did you check if he had any extra maritial affairs in heavly Catholic Goa ? Apparently Not - and No Bill Clinton-like Hanky Panky here - considering that my mom's Seeda Sada "Holier Than Thou" cousin Dr Jose Colaco in the Bahamas considers him a good friend. see below. 2. Christao Goenkars do not like the term MGP - Why should we have "Maharashtrawadi" in the name of Goa's leading party ? Its probably time to proudly rename you party "THE GOMANTAK PARTY" You must be in mourning - Please accept my sincere apologies. Its time for a party name change now otherwise you may be the next political casualty and Goa will be deprived of an excellent Chief Minister or some other "dadagiri" local Gaon Goon smuggler Congresswallah render or cuzner may be elected CM next. He asked all the people to join the movement to save Goa. [H] jc's response: I second the call by Dr Wilfred Mesquita to go on a day's hunger strike to 'atone for the sins of the enemies of Mother Goa' i.e. 1. Those who have supported/support the Special Economic Zone 2. Those who wanted/want to merge Goa with another State 3. Those who worked/work against the Konkani spoken and written by Goans 4. Those who consistently disrupt governance in Goa by bringing down Governments 5. Those in power who do not pay their bills (be it at restaurants et al services) 6. Those who migrate from one political platform to another as a matter of 'principle' and 'interest'. 7. Those who bribe and then complain of corruption. BTW: Please Eat before you start the day's fast. No food will be allowed until "Night becomes". 'Liquid Refreshments' will be served all day long. Stocks (left over from campaign) limited. Please come early. [Goanet] Goa is Best State in India in 2012
Goa has been adjudged as the best State in India for the third year in a row in 2012. Its universities are among the best in the land -comparable to the IITs. Goan students are getting into medical colleges and Engineering colleges in large numbers. Goan industry is booming. Goans are wealthy and well off - What is the reason for this dramatic difference in the fate of Goa ? Their government is led by Manohar Parrikar an IITian turned Chief Minister. IITians are the very best students in the country. They are well known for their sharp minds and world wide networking skills. That Goans have an IITian as Chief Minister makes all the difference. Manohar Parrikar is unique. He is a clean and clever politician. He has vanquished all his rivals in Goa. Even Dr. Wilfred Mesquitta his long time rival has realized Manohar's potential and decided in the best interests of Goa and Goans not to contest Manohar and the MGP in the upcoming elections. Ten years from now we will all look back and realize how Goa has become the Best State in the Nation. We will have ourselves to pat on the back for putting Manohar back in office a CM. Viva Goa ! Viva ! Viva ! So Goenkars the futre is in your hands, Vote for Manohar Parrikar in the next elections and make you rosy future come true !

[Goanet] The Great Velim/AVC- Goa Sporting Tradition and its Galaxy of Sportspersons
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Support growing the reading habit among Goa's next generation of achievers Bookworm Library and Magazine Bluebelle, Tamba Colony, St Inez, Goa Contacts: Tel: +91 9823222665 Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] --- Every Velkar from Velim in AVC should be Chin Up and Chest our on reading the following report on Velim's sporting legacy. If everyy hamlet in India was like Velim, India would be swimming in Gold medals after the Beijing Olympics ! Dr Carmo D'Cruz ex Baga, Velim, Goa now INDIAN Harbour Beach, Florida The picturesque hamlet of Velim in AVC (for Assolna/Velim/Cuncolim) in Salcete, South Goa has had a fairly long sporting tradition and continues to produce outstanding sportsmen. My favorite hockey coach while growing up in Bandra. Bombay was Oliver Andrade from Zaino, Velim. He helped me hone my goalkeeping skills and licked me into shape - this took me all the way from St. Stanislaus High School, Bandra to national schools hockey twice (1973 and 1974 for Maharashtra), played for Bombay in the Junior Nationals (1975), Indian Airlines (1976, 1977), Combined Universities and National Sports Organization camps (1979, 1980) and even after a hiatus for citizenship reasons - Team USA Squad in 1992. Oliver had also helped another Goan Goalkeeper Cedric Pereira of Anjuna attain greatness in St Stanislaus and Bandra - he represented India with acrobatic distinction in the early 70s. Incidently my fellow Stanislaus goalkeepers at that time in the mid 70s were E.I. Wency Gomes (my senior by one year) - brother of the famous Olympian Marcellus Gomes (and cousin of Bombay National Goalie Hilary Gomes) and Goan Nigel DeSales (my contemporary - who lives in nearby Miami these days). Nigel is the son of Abel DeSales - one of the Best Goalkeepers in India in the 1940s - Incidently both Abel DeSales and his fellow Goan rival Olympian Leo Pinto of Camarcazana, Mapuca lived in Bandra. Joaquim Carvalho the current Bandra-based Goan Coach of the India Team was our Stanislaus teammate and contemporay ! Goan Journalist Ben Antao who lives in Canada these days is also a prominent Goan hockey-goalkeeper from Velim. Prominent Kuwait-based Soccer organizer Demino D'Cruz is from Baga, Velim. Oliver, who kept raising the bar on my fitness and performance, always told me that being from Velim and Bandra, Bombay - I was part of two great Goan goalkeeping traditions - and that I should live and play up to those high expectations ! The Velim Great Goan Goalkeeper tradition that began with Ivor Colaco (for East Africa in the early 60s), continued with Jerome Caeiro (for India in the late 60s) and John Correia (for India in the 70s)... The Bombay Great Goan Goalkeeper tradition that began with Leo Pinto (1940s), Sacru Menezes (1950s), Jerome Caeiro, John Correia, Olympio Fernandes (1970s), Cedric D'Souza (1980s) and others .. So inspiring were these two Great Goan Goalie Traditions, that seeing Sacru Menezes - another proud Goan's antics in goal - Dr Avertano Noronha - neurologist from Assolna and Chicago - who played center-half for his college in Punjab, switched to goalkeeper ! Thus proving that most Velim/AVC sportsmen have Brains and Brawn. Well, over the course of time, our Velkars have strayed from that great Goan goalie tradition...Dr. Vece Paes led the way playing Center-half for India in the 70s. In the 1975 Bombay Junior National Team we had two other Velkars - full-back Leslie Correa (Baga) and Center-forward Ivan D'Silva (Carxeta ? - son of the great international Athlete Dr. Melchisto D'Silva). After seeing the beating I would take from penalty corner-specialists like Surjit Singh, Rajinder Singh, Baljit Singh, Gurdishpal Singh etc. - my brother Clifton preferred to play at centerforward. Leander Paes of course has carved a niche of immortality for himself in Tennis.and my sons Jason and Jonathan D'Cruz are local high school basketball stars in Central Florida. We have had prominent footballers too from AVC in recent years. Irene Martins of Baga, Velim was an outstanding sprinter in her school days. Leander's mom Jennifer Paes was the captain of India's basketball team in the 70s. With how far the present/future generations of AVC/Velkar Sportsmen have come, and away from the great goan goalie tradition -Late Oliver Andrade surely must be turning in his grave ! But his high ideals and love for sports will live on ! Best Regards, Dr. Carmo D'Cruz ex Velim Goa now INDIAn Harbour Beach, Florida

It is also interesting to note that Goans are observing 75 years since the construction of the Goan Institute in Mombasa. What would Kenyan hockey be without the Goans ? Indian too has benefitted from Kenyan hockey. You may note that India's star center-half at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games Dr. Vece Paes played much of his early hockey in Mombasa. With it's own laws and parliament, it operates independently. According to an Indian mythology, Goa was reclaimed from the sea. It is believed that the Sixth Avatar of Vishnu Sage, Parshuram, created the Sahyadri range and struck an arrow into the western seas. The arrow is said to have sent the seas rolling back to create Gomantak or Goa. Goans in Kenya are marking 75 years since constructing the Goan Institute in Mombasa. The school, which has now changed its name to Sacred Heart, has seen some of Kenya's great leaders pass through its gates. The foundation and collaboration of the community saw the establishment of enduring institution in the 1930s.

[Goanet] Influential Book "Christ Among Us: A Modern Presentation of Catholic Faith"
http://www.GOANET.org International Cuisine Conference on Traditional Asian Diet Panaji, Goa, September 2-5, 2007 - http://www.indologygoa.in Online Media Partner: http://www.goanet.org Influential Catholic Book "Christ Among Us: A Modern Presentation of Catholic Faith" Can Transform Goa for the Better Many Christao Goans appear disillusioned and confused with their religion these days. A number of Christao Goans are observed to be incessantly fighting with their neighbours, not talking with them or members of their own families, etc. They appear to be deviating from the teachings of Jesus Christ. There could be many reasons for these trends. It could be due to the inadequacies and misunderstandings with the currently available Cathecism books, available Konkani bibles, poorly trained preachers, misinterpretations/poor translation of Konkani in the Romi/Devnagiri scripts, etc. This is also reflected in the dire political scene in Goa (where smugglers and other nefarious characters have got elected to the upper echelons of government and the most highly educated/proven capable Goan Politician and IITian was not elected Chief Minister of Goa). All these are signs that Goans are encouraging corruption and appear to be deviating from the original teachings of Jesus Christ. Well there is an influential Catholic Book "Christ Among Us: A Modern Presentation of the Catholic Faith for Adults" (6th Edition) by Anthony Wilhelm (Author) Price $12.71 (Published by the predominantly Catholic Paulist Press). It has the potential of reversing this trend among Goans. This book also respects all other faiths in Goa and India. This is especially important in predominantly Hindu Goa and India. Widespread reading of this book along with an accompanying Bible and adherence to its principles has the potential of transforming Goa, and Christao Goans earning the respect of our non-Catholic brethren, which our faith truly deserves. We may even get a few conversions to Catholicism if we adhere to the teachings of this book and earn the respect of non-catholics (although conversion of people from other faiths should not be our primary goal). It is also recommended that daily reading of this book at home or at church be required of all Goans. It will truly transform Goa and Goans, and every house must have a copy of this book. This book should replace all Catcheism books in the higher/secondary levels of Goan Catholic Schools. It is also recommended that at the earliest opportunity this book be translated into our native Konkani language. This book will usher in a paradigmn shift in most Goans' ways of thinking and truly revolutionize Goa. Viva Catholicism ! Viva Goa ! Viva India ! Viva ! Viva ! [Goanet] Department of Engineering Systems Is Fastest Growing At Florida Tech
The Department of Engineering Systems at Florida Institute of Technology (Florida Tech) offers popular graduate degrees in Engineering Management and Systems Engineering. The Department is headed by Dr. Muzaffar Shaikh, who is a graduate of Bombay University. Among others, its distinguished faculty also includes Dr. Carmo D'Cruz, Professor of Engineering Entrepreneurship, who is a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. With the recent introduction of the Master's program in Systems Engineering (MSSE), the Department of Engineering Systems has become one of the fastest growing departments at Florida Tech. These are very exciting times for the Department of Engineering Systems with new courses and curricula that address a practicing engineer's concerns. All DES faculty members have extensive industry experience. They successfully integrate this experience with the class material. This makes the departmental courses practical and interesting and very popular. The full time students get lucrative positions in industry even before they graduate. The working students get promoted in their respective organizations. For more information visit www.des.fit.edu.

Way to Go Manohar ! We do not need any "BHAILES" in Goa ! Send them to Kerala ! Keep Goa for Goans Only ! - Carmo D'Cruz PARRIKAR: KEEP MIGRANTS OFF Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar, on July 17, 2007, called for arresting the inflow of population into the state, warning that an addition of two to three lakh of persons would put severe pressure on the state's infrastructure. "I am not against people coming in from other states to settle here, but we should not create siutations that will facilitate it. A population of 15 lakh for our state is enough. We must not allow it to reach 20 lakh. Even another 2-3 lakh rise in population will put Goa in trouble," he said. Parrikar made the remarks while referring to the mention of Special Economic Zone for Goa in the government's budget proposals, which he said would create a huge job market that the Goan population would not be able to cater to. Parrikar also criticised the state budget on every aspect, stating that it would not benefit either the farmer, the common man or the youth. He said the state government's indiscriminate borrowings was pushing the state into a debt trap and also questioned uncontrolled revenue expenditure. [GT]

It had to be a Gujarati who helped the Portuguese Conquer Goa - Why didn't Chandan help the Portuguese Colonize mainland Gujarat ? Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, who is credited with discovering the sea route to India, actually followed a Gujarati trader from Zanzibar, a new book claimed. Suresh Soni, author of "India's Scientific Heritage", quoting archaeologist Dr Vishnu Shridhar Wakankar, said "He, no doubt, came to India but not as a discoverer sea-farer but following a Gujarati trader from Zanzibar." According to Dr Wakankar, Vasco da Gama had recorded in his diary that upon his arrival at Zanzibar in Africa, he saw a docked ship three times bigger than his own. He took an African interpreter to meet the owner of the ship, Chandan, a Gujarati trader who used to bring pine wood and teak from India along with spices and take back diamonds to Cochin.Vasco da Gama followed Chandan to reach the shores of India, a fact very few independent Indians know about, regrets Soni. [Goanet] Why Christian Hockey Goalkeepers ?
http://www.GOANET.org International Cuisine Conference on Traditional Asian Diet Panaji, Goa, September 2-5, 2007 - http://www.indologygoa.in Online Media Partner: http://www.goanet.org Why Christian Goalkeepers ? India has won the Olympic Gold Medal many times in the last century. Infact it was always champion continuously fron the mid-1920s until the 60s. The Indian team always consisted of Sikhs, but the goalkeeper was always a non-Sikh. I have often wondered why ? Over the years I have been told that the Sikhs have too much of a temperament to play in the docile, defensive goalkeeper position. Alternatively the non-Sikh India goalkeeper has almost always been a Christian. I have been told that Christian goalie have the right temperament to play defensively in goal. Sacru Menezes (He did not play for India at Mexico 1968 - otherwise we might have won gold), was the goalkeeper coach of our 1975 Bombay Junior National team. He kept up the great Goan goalkeeping tradition in the 50s and 60s and was very eager to coach up and coming Goan goalkeepers. -- Message: 6 Date: Thu, 05 Jul 2007 20:55:33 -0400 From: "CARMO DCRUZ" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [Goanet] Why No Christian Goalkeepers in the Most Recent Indian National Hockey Camp ? It is just that our docile players are keeping away from the dare devil goalkeeper position. It is also quite probable that former Indian goalkeeper Satinder Pal Singh Walia (India Dark Blues 1970) coached the two Sikh goalies Gurnam Singh and Jawinder Singh with the help of Romeo James (who is a Punjabi Christian), upon retiring from Western Railway and leaving his hometown of Pune and settling in the Punjab. Former Karnataka and India Hockey Goalkeeper Ashish Balal has set up a goal keeping academy in Bangalore and is also producing results. There is no such concerted effort to produce goalies in Bombay and Goa. Former India Goalkeeper and Coach Cedric D'Souza is coaching the Greek National Squad and this has not helped the local goalies in Bombay. Also Christians have dominated the forward line and midfield in recent years like Merwyn Fernandes, Marcellus Gomes and Joaquim Carvalho and they have been excellent role models for our youngsters to emulate. This has not helped the cause of Christian Goalkeepers either. Also most of the community's goalkeepers like Cedric Pereira (w. Australia). Olympio Fernandes (E. Canada - Toronto). Allan Schofield (W. Canada - Vancouver), Jude Menezes (N.Z,), & Carmo D'Cruz (Florida) have all happily settled abroad - and this has not helped nuture the local goalkeeping talent. We need to have vigorous Goalkeeping camps to regain our jobs as India hockey goalkeepers. In the mean time relatively invincible Adrian D'Souza will continue to do duty as goalkeeper for India. We need to regain and retain our goalkeeping legacy that was unbroken and first established by Leo Pinto in 1948. Vigorous goalkeeping camps concentrating on the geometry of the goal and the D, vigorous weight training and calisthenistics, acrobatics and reflexive exercises should be emphasized, just as they train in the USA national camps. Only then can we proudly keep up our proud, time honoured traditional job of hockey goalkeeping ! IIT graduate is Goa chief minister Sandesh Prabhudesai in Panjim Bharatiya Janata Party's first chief minister in Goa, Manohar Parrikar, is also the first Indian Institute of Technology graduate to take over the reins of the tiny tourist state. The 45-year-old businessman from Mapuca has been the moving force behind the BJP's growth from a non-entity to become the ruling party in Goa. His meticulous style of working and organisational skills, combined with manipulative skills, has now made him Goa's 23rd chief minister. He is the third chief minister in the last 16 months and the 13th in the last decade. After graduating from IIT, Powai, he returned to Goa to work for the BJP as a committed worker of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. After making his presence felt in a couple of Lok Sabha elections, he led the BJP in the 1994 assembly polls, along with three others. Parrikar succeeded in creating a moralistic image of the BJP in the minds of Goans, who, keeping aside their reservations about its communal tag, elected 10 of its candidates in the 1999 assembly elections. During his first tenure in the assembly as an opposition member, Parrikar made an impact with his uprightness and exposed several scams, including the infamous power scandal. In July 1998, the BJP legislature party extended support from outside to the government led by Dr Wilfred de Souza, who had split from the Congress, for five months before a split within de Souza's group led to its collapse. The Congress government led by Luizinho Faleiro, which succeeded de Souza's, collapsed within three months. At that time, Parrikar was accused of backstabbing de Souza, who had another chance to form the government. The BJP backed out after realising that people were against the toppling games and instead demanded President's rule. The BJP emerged as the main opposition party in June last year. However, when Francisco Sardinha revolted against the Congress government in November, Parrikar decided to support Sardinha's coalition government. Three among the ten BJP legislators became ministers in Sardinha's government, but Parrikar stayed out of the ministry even as he continued as leader of the BJP legislature party. The BJP has reached the seat of power only after roping in eight Congress defectors. This time, Sardinha is accusing him of backstabbing. Incidentally, he represents Panjim, the capital of Goa, in the assembly. Being a person with vision and having expertise in financial matters, Pannikar faces the uphill task of getting Goa out of the debt trap it has slid into. Another challenge is that of completing the remaining three-and-a-half-year term without facing a revolt, which Goa has become accustomed to.

I recommend that you too go for your PhD because the opportunities for a doctorate in a cross-disiplinary field like Engineering Management are tremendous. I empathize with your family's predicaments in Margao. Such incidents should be resolved in a court of law and the perpetrators should be exposed and punished and not permitted to win elections. We should not try to convert such incidents into communal "Ami Christao, Te Kokne" situations if possible. My good friend Manohar Parrikar has never been a communalist as far as I can remember. There was even an ordained catholic Jesuit priest (who was stuying for his B. Tech in Electrical Engineering) at IIT Bombay in the 70s who was among his circle of close friends at IIT Bombay in the 70s. It is the uneducated Goans who think like that. We Goans should encourage education at all levels esp at the higher echelons and not let communalisn be a factor in Goa Politics. We Christao Goans should also try to dominate National Parties like the BJP and work towards the Greater Good of our beloved Goa. Dukor is not a bad word in the Konkani language - Infact it should remind one of tasty Goan Pork specialities like Chouricos and Sorpatel, and make ones' mouth water. Date: 5 Jun 2007 19:27:21 - Dear Dr. Carmo, What is food to one may be poision to another, what Parrikar did in 70's is history but we are in the present world of reality , during his term lot's of damage was done to catholics in many ways and this is the reality , we have witnessed how BJP and it's network works, i have nothing wrong with his or your qualification but his behaviour and the party's stand dividing people on religion basis throughout india and other anti-social elements with the help of RSS is not good for goans. There is nothing about Catholics v/s hindus, people don't distinguish this element , such issues come to the forefront only when parties like BJP/RSS make it political for their own gains. Apart from BJP which other party is communal ?(i could be ignorant , if you can throw some light) Dr. Carmo , florida is a great place and you could be very lucky to be there, come down to your motherland , see it for yourself and then pass respectful comments. I have many friends who have met Parrikar and they have their own opinions. Lastly, however much educated one may be , the lust for money, power , greed , jealousy, hatred are the common features in the political field and Parrikar is no saint. --- CONVENTION OF THE GOAN DIASPORA FROM GOA INTO THE WORLD Lisbon, Portugal June 15-17, 2007 Details at: http://www.goacom.org/casa-de-goa/noticias.html --- The Congress Party appears less corrupt without Churchill Alemao. He sure was the most corrupt Goan politician around. Carmo D'Cruz ex Velim, Goa, now INDIAN Harbour Beach, Florida. ALVA: CONGRESS WON'T BOW TO BLACKMAIL PANJIM: All India Congress Committee general secretary Margaret Alva yesterday said the Congress will not bow down to "blackmailers", and added that Churchill Alemao's exit would not affect the party's prospects in the June 2 Assembly elections. Indicating that the Congress' central leadership was taking the Goa polls seriously Alva said several star campaigners will descend on Goa's horizons to rally support for the party. Besides Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, P Chidambaram, Ambika Soni, Sachin Pilot and various Congress Chief Ministers would campaign in the state.

Re: [Goanet] Congratulations Joaquim Carvalho - New Chief Coach of Indian Hockey Team !
Cornel, We still have the North-South Divide in our Hockey. When the camps/selection trials are held in the North eg. Patiala, the selectors are mostly Notherners and they tend to favour the players from the North. When the camps/selections are held in the South eg. NIS Bangalore, The selectors are mostly from the South and they tend to favour the players from the South. If the camp is held in Bhopal, I will not be surprised if the entire team is from Bhopal. Hopefully that will not be the case with Joaquim, Mervyn and Markie. Having been through all the partiality, politics and favouritism in the Indian Hockey Team Selection Trials for the past 25 years, I have no doubt that this trio will select the Best Indian Team - wherever the Selection Trials are held. I hope Joaquim selects Patiala for his training camps (if its up to him) because the food there is definitely better than the rice-sambhar served in NIS Bangalore and a well-fed team definitely plays well. Also the Patiala location is secluded as the NIS which is housed in the erstwhile Palace of the former Maharaja of Patiala is rather faraway from downtown and there are less distractions than at NIS Bangalore which is in the heart of down-town. Best Regards, Dr. Carmo D'Cruz INDIAN Harbour Beach, Florida PS: Timmy, Markie: Please forward my emails to Joaquim - I dont have his current email address - last one I had was when he was in the Gulf and please send me Joaquim's and Merwyn's latest email addresses. [Goanet] Congratulations Joaquim Carvalho - New Chief Coach of Indian Hockey Team !
Hi Joaquim, Congratulations on your new appointment ! It really warmed the cockles of my Stanislite heart to know that you were appointed Chief Coach of the Indian team with Markie Gomes as your deputy and Merwyn Fernandes as your advisor. Thats really an all-Bandra team ! Now to ensure that India wins the Beijing Olympics Gold Medal and all other tournaments - Here are a few suggestions: 1. Dont sever ties with Vasudevan Bhaskaran - he has got over 20 years experience in that position and some keen insights into the Indian side, the strengths and weaknesses and capabilities of the opponents 2. Incorporate Yoga into the Training regimen as Balbir Singh-ji Sr. had done in 1972 - Use a qualified Yoga instructor for the purpose - It will give the players extra-sensory perception and improve their anticipation, agility, muscle flexibility, endurance, 3. Concentrate on physical fitness from day One. The players should last for 2 hrs with showing any signs of tiredness. 4. Make use of fellow Bandraite coach Cedric D'Souza's insights too, esp when it comes to goalkeeping 5. Benchmark heavily with the Pakistanis, Aussies and the Germans - They will be your toughest competitors. 6. Refer to Balkishen Singh-ji's Training Manuals, Notes and Books - He had infused Inductive thinking into Indian Hockey. You should do the same to push the state of the art. Just deductive thinking will not do. Balkishen-ji use to talk about his theories just before going to sleep - so that we thought about hockey strategies even in bed. You should do the same ! Also use Ganesh (INS Bangalore) as a resource. Dr. Vece Paes (India, Center Half,1972, of Calcutta) has done a lot of cutting edge research on conditioning and endurance-building. Use all of it. Also you may want to include altitude training as part of your training regimen - one week in Patiala and one week at the heights of nearby Uttaranchal Pradesh - this has similar effect on endurane as blood doping and the Americans use it all the time ! and its all legal !) 7. Enforce strict curfews and discipline in the team, and impartiality in the selection process. I am confident that with you, Markie and Merwyn, Indian hockey is in good hands. We cannot complain about the coaching staff any more. Inculcate a winning attitude in the team and develop a winning tradition. And I have no doubt that India will win again and again. There is lot to learn from the last World Cup winning team of 1975 - how Balbir developed a winning attitude in the team, he psyched out the Pakistanis (by going to the mosque to pray with the entire Indian team) and victory was assured. Maybe you should resort to such off-the-field tactics too, They really rattled the Pakistanis - who always think God is on their side and get an entra boost of confidence. Ask for Balbir's advice, call him to give a pep talk to the team - he can be very inspirational - esp when he talks of his 3 Olympic Golds and the 1975 World Cup victory as coach cum manager ! His spends 6 mths in Chandigarh and 6 mths in Vancouver. Wishing You Guys all the Very Best in Beijing and Beyond.
