[Goanet] Senior police officer from Goa to enthrall drama lovers in Qatar
Senior police officer from Goa to enthrall drama lovers in Qatar Doha: A senior police officer in Goa Deputy Superintendent of Police Sammy Tavares has been dubbed as a ‘Singing Cop’ thanks to his two music albums – Police Porjek (Police for Public) and Desak Bhettoi (Offer it to the Country). After a resounding success with his music albums, Tavares has now turned his attention of passing on a social message through Goa’s most popular art form – tiatr, a Konkani form of drama. The drama entitled Aplea Bhurgeam Sangatak (With Your Children) will be held in Doha in the 3rd week of September and is been organised by Doha Goans Sports Club. The drama was recently released in Goa with a resounding start and after that, the same had been staged in all the major cities of Goa. After capturing hearts of thousands of tiatr lovers in Goa, the director and the performing troupe promised to conquer the hearts of tiatr lovers in Doha, Dubai and Kuwait. Tavares said his drama is a must-watch for all the families, in the circumstances of fading family values. “The script is on family lives. It depicts how values among the youngsters are degrading with every passing day,” he said. His two music albums – Police Porjek (Police for Public) and Desak Bhettoi (Offer it to the Country), he claims, were hit amongst the Konkani music lovers. My current tiatr, he said, is dedicated to each Goan family as it has a strong message both for parents and children. Tavares, who has a service record of 23 years, said that the drama can make difference, if audience takes the message back home, seriously. He has not only scripted and directed the drama but has also penned the lyrics of songs for the tiatr. He further said that releasing tiatr was also to keep alive the Goan tradition. Tiatrs, which are mostly concerning social issues confronting the people, are performed live on stages with tiatrists demonstrating a high degree of social awareness at various places. Besides the regular commercial shows, it is held as part of the celebrations of nearly every church and chapel feast in the State. Further details of the show can be collected from any committee member of Doha Goans Sports Club

Over 100 entries were received and the overall response was overwhelming. The competition was categorized into three groups . Group-1 which included children from level 5 to 7 had to write on the topic “Blessings of Science to Mankind” within 200/300 words. Group-2 included children from level 8 to 10 and they wrote on the topic “Internet a boon or a bane” within 300/400 words. Group-3 was allotted to the senior children from level 11 to 12 and they found the topic “Youth the pillars of the Society” an easy one as observed from their writing which exceeded the pre-set word limit of 500/600 words. All participants were issued with a Certificate of Participation and the three winners of each category will be awarded. The Prize distribution of the ESSAY COMPETITION winners will be held on the Goa Day celebration 18th November 2011 at DOHA MUNICIPALITY CONFERENCE HALL near Qatar National Bank Corniche. It was heartening to note that, more than the children, the parents were delighted over the conduction of the competition, at the present time, when children tend to give less importance to the art of developing the skills of good writing, as a result of the usage of modern communication media like the internet and mobile. The DOHA GOAN SPORTS CLUB is pleased to announce the winners of the Essay Writing Competition and congratulates, in Group A, 1st place Mallika Ravi, 2 nd place Anvita Nithyanand 3rd place Anugraha Arun. [Goanet] Blackslades and Sharp to perform at Doha Goans Sports Club May Queen Ball On May 5 at Ramada Plaza
Blackslades and Sharp to perform at Doha Goans Sports Club May Queen Ball On May 5 at Ramada Plaza Doha Qatar, March 28 2011: What do you get if you get India's best drummer, the most talented guitarist, a bass guitarist like none in the country, an equally impressive guy on the keyboards and a vocalist who is as young at heart as he is talented at the task makes for a lethal combination, doesn't it? That's how you would describe the BlackSlades once you've seen them perform. By any standards one of the best Goan bands around. This group of guys are based in Delhi but are very much Goans at heart. BlackSlades will rock Qatar on May 5 for the May Queen Ball organized by Doha Goans Sports Club at Ramada Plaza. The concept of May Queen Ball was started by Doha Goans Sports Club in 1991 i.e 1st May Queen Ball during Basil Coutinho as President. Then and it continued till 2003 when the club was dissolved. After the revival of DGSC last year, within a short span of time entire Goan Community got animated with different activities starting with Konkani Drama Songleank Nomaskar on 24/09/2010, an inter-village football tournament, Goa Day in November 2010, St. Francis Xavier Feast with free dinner followed by cultural programme on 3rd Dec. 2010 Church premises, Dine Dance Annual Day in December 2010 and now is the continuation of mega event in May 2011 May Queen Ball. BlackSlades original band composed of - Alex ( Keyboard/Sound ), Francis ( Bass ), Clifford ( Rhythm guitar ), Succoro ( Drums ), Menino ( Guitarist/Vocals ), this was the way they started off in 1985. The year 1989-90 saw Benny make his entry into the group to replace Alex on the Keyboards, the same year Julius reinforced the band with his vocals. BlackSlades have been performed and entertained music lovers for the past 14 years at the magnificent Crown Plaza Surya Hotel in Delhi. They go down to their home town Goa every summer to remind everyone that they have not forgotten their roots. They have also done several musical shows overseas with Muscat being their most visited place apart from Kuwait. They also perform regularly in Indian cities like Chandigarh, Delhi, Roorkhie, Jaipur, etc, catering to different types of people and listening tastes -- from rock concerts at colleges to hi-brow jazz and pop dos. Their repertoire is wide, flexible and they provide what the people want. It sets the band apart from the others. These guys are meant for bigger things, which sooner or later will pass their way. Black Slades started up in the initial years with the famous singer Anamika. They have also worked with Apache Indian and Kailash Kher. Benny ( Keyboards ) lives in Margao and initially played as part of a Hard Rock setup. If not into music, he would probably have been into marketing cause he has a way with words and knows how to get his point across. Ronald ( Vocalist ) is like a firecracker exploding endlessly. He comes from the coastal village of Benaulim and is the most charismatic of the lot. Ronald is also the youngest in the group and started singing professionally at the age of 19. One look at Ronald and you may take him for a walking, talking billboard for a style magazine, with accessories and a haircut as vibrant as his personality. Menino ( Guitarist/Vocals ) is a very humble person and easy to get along. Six strings on a piece of wood with Menino's fingers is a sure way to make magic that maybe cannot be seen but definitely can be heard. Menino is originally from Colva and is a very good cook as well. Succoro ( Drummer ) - This guy's looks are deceiving - he may look like a scientist about to discover something big, but give him a drum set and you will feel the bass kick in a pulsating rhythm that is sure to leave you asking for more. Succoro is the quietest member of the band but when he speaks everybody better listen. He is originally from Colva. Anthony ( Bass Guitarist ) comes from the beautiful village of Velsao. Anton as he is called by those close to him, is a very down-to-earth person, the kind who would only take as much as needed. He is an amazing player of the Bass guitar. Anthony is also into martial arts (taekwondo). His aim is to release an album in Konkani. NB: Article appeared on Gasper Crasto’s website and was written by the author Gasper Crasto

[Goanet] Doha Goans Sports Club launch Benevolent Fund
Doha Goans Sports Club launch Benevolent Fund Packed audience for Konkani (tiatr) “Soglleank Nomoskar DOHA QATAR One of the Doha Goans Sports Club (DGSC) core objective is to reach out to the financially unfortunate brethren both in Qatar and Goa. With this objective in mind DGSC has launched a Benevolent Fund, which was formally launched on Friday, 24th September 2010, on the occasion of the Konkani (tiatr) “Soglleank Nomoskar” at the Al Ghazal Club in Doha Qatar. “There are times when people are in dire straits and do not know where to knock for help. The club will set aside an amount for this purpose, it is our desire to also get the community involved in such humanitarian task and we will continue to conduct events to support this cause,” said the DGSC in their press release. “After deep introspection, and considering many difficulties and problems faced by our Goan brethren in the past, Doha Goans Sports Club came forward to introduce a special and completely separate fund i.e. benevolent fund to help all needy Goans which will be decided case by case i.e. solely those facing problems specially at the time of deportation, need of costly medicines/operation and those who really cannot afford etc,” the press note adds. On the occasion, the 19-members troupe which arrived from Goa performed meticulously and displayed enormous skills of superb acting and singing accompanied by colossal humour and comedy with a moral, all of which kept the 800-odd Konkani loving spectators spell bound during the 4-hours entertainment program. The program which was selected and executed by the club’s P.R.O. director of Cultural Social Affairs, Mauricio Pereira, along with the club’s Committee Members, commenced with the unveiling of the club’s banner with logo by Rev. Fr. Anand Castelino who was also the chief guest. That was a touching moment for many Goan residents who well remembered the good old times when the club had excelled in conducting various Social, Cultural and Sports events. Fr. Anand spoke on the need to preserve love and unity in the community and underlined the importance of keeping alive the Konkani language. The President, Ambrosio Dias, in his welcome address briefly explained the need of reviving DGSC which, under circumstances, was forced into silent mode and lamented over the deprivation of the Goan Community of leisure diversions since 2003. During the show prizes to lucky winners were distributed and the club also announced future Social, Cultural and Sports events. The very fact that the spectators were still sitting when the final curtain went down only spoke of the total enjoyment of the show organized by DGSC. The Konkani tiatr was the first major activity for DGSC which was revived three months back. The next evetn is slated for October 15, wherein an Inter-village football tournament will be held.

[Goanet] Ambrosio Dias of Doha Goans Sports Club in Qatar speaks out
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. For the last many years, we were fed up listening to the common proverb, which our Indian friends cited, when they wanted to refer to the near dormant status of the social, cultural and sports events of the Goan community in Qatar. We Goans are God fearing, fun loving, kind, generous and a peace loving community. It is all in the genes and conditioned by culture. And we love life. Goa is well known as a tourist destination. It is a very beautiful country abounded with natural beauty, places of worship, world heritage architecture and hospitable people. But, how to channelize the positive vibes for the greater good of the community had been a question which had been troubling many prominent long-time Qatar residents. What ,we Goans see and read about our community-related activities in Qatar is meagre. That means, we are dormant. This deplorable situation has been realized by many likeminded Goans who have come together to revive DOHA GOANS SPORTS CLUB which had ceased to function, in line with others, for the purpose of establishing one Goan club in Qatar. It may be recalled here that, in the good old years, Goans in Qatar have had a ball of a time through various sports, social and cultural activities initiated by various clubs in Qatar. But during 2003, all these clubs were dissolved and brought under one umbrella by a competent authority for the unification and solidarity of our community. Regretfully, the leadership that engineered the take-over of the reins failed to meet the expectation of the Goan Community in Qatar. We have been tolerant all these years but have run out of patience. It is not right to allow any individual or individuals to take advantage of the situation. Let us recall the adage “You can fool some of the people some of the time and not all of the people all of the time”. I believe that it is most important to sustain transparency and openness in all our endeavors since it is the only way to preserve everyone’s confidence and trust within our community. This will help us to overcome any challenge to reach our ambitions and goals.I believe that, in today’s world of human affairs, it is vital to be heard and seen and do things with a “bang”. We have begun the process. SHORT/LONG TERM PLANS Our primary short and long term plan is to meet and reach out to humanity in general and the Goan community in Qatar in particular. The Managing Committee of DGSC has drawn up a comprehensive plan, up to December 2010, with a good mix of activities to accommodate Social, Cultural and Sports events details of which will be released in due course of time. Presently, we are young to attempt drawing up long term plans for the future.Nevertheless, we will strive to go to any length for the welfare of our Goan Community in Qatar. MEMBERSHIP DRIVE The Membership drive is on and very encouraging; but shall receive a boost as from 24-09-2010. GOAN YOUTH IN QATAR The Goan Youth in Qatar shall be our prime focus and we shall do all in our power to appreciate and encourage the talents they possess and help them to grow up as good humans. We have introduced the Youth Cell in our Managing Committee which shall be headed and managed by our youth. In the past, Goans in Qatar excelled in Social, Cultural and Sports activities; thanks to the dedication and sincerity of many Goans who understood the needs of our community in Qatar and provided the necessary ground support. Many of our children were born in Qatar and have taken part in the various activities initiated by our club. Some of these children are residing in Qatar and are blessed with prospective employment. Quite a number of them have got married and have children of their own. What memories can these children have about the Goans in Qatar? That is something we have seriously thought of and initiated the revival of DGSC. The baton has to be handed over through the hands of true sons of the soil. GOANS IN QATAR The Goan community in Qatar is a happy lot and we are grateful to the Government and the people of Qatar for making us feel at home. Many Goans have excelled in different fields and some of them have ¾ generations in Qatar. In most cases, both husband and wife are employed and complement each other with all family chores while finding time to relax and enjoy good life. However, several of the Goans in Qatar have had humble beginnings and they have sacrificed their lives for the contentment of their children and imparting quality education to their children. Life is Qatar is safe, peaceful, enjoyable and prosperous. God bless Qatar
