[Goanet] URGENT PRESS STATEMENT: Today, January 21, Over 1200 community members /citizens march to the BMC Office, Kandivali on the Remedy Church issue - Memorandum to DMC/ BMC

2017-01-21 Thread Dolphy D'souza

URGENT PRESS STATEMENT

Today, Saturday, 21 January , over 1200 citizens/ community members
*'PROTEST MORCHA * entitled 'ROAD TO FREEDOM' marched to the BMC/ DMC
Office-R South Ward to protest the BMC notice to take part of the church
land. Handed over a MEMORANDUM to the DMC, Copy enclosed.

*Not an Inch of our Land will be given."* was our expression during the
meeting with DMC/AMC and other Civic Officials.

Today, We citizens/community walked in a Protest Morcha named ROAD TO
FREEDOM, to BMC R South office, situated at 2nd, cross Road, MG Road, near
swimming pool, Kandivali (W); to

protest against the unjust BMC's land acquisition Notice to Our Lady of
Remedy Church, Poinsur.

We presented the Memorandum to the DMC, copy of the same enclosed.

We expressed our deep anquish and disappointment at the lack of response
to
our letter of December 02, 2016 which left us with no choice but to
organise
this march. We urged the BMC authorities that they must be sensitive to
the
grievances of the citizens and atleast respond to their communications.
DMC/

AMC said they would do it.

We also emphasised the point that there was no point in taking the said
part

of the church land to broaden the Gamdevi Road which is off S.V. Road when
the Road just leads to a dead end. We demanded instead that the BMC must
concentrate on widening the S.V. Road right from Borivali to Malad which
is

not more than 57 feet to ease out the traffic. In fact the width at the
Remedy Church of the S.V. Road is the widest. . We are not against
development. the Remedy Church in the past has given land for public
causes
namely the Poinsur Bus Depot which belonged to the Church besides other
land
parcels around the church. We alleged that this so called road widening
was

only to benefit the builder. We also stated to him that we have been
targeted because we are a minority community. We thanked the DMC /BMC
for

provoking us to come out on the streets to agitate. We are no longer a
community that will take things lying down but will protest peacefully to
achieve our just demands.

The DMC who gave us a patient hearing stated that he would communicate our
grievances to the Municipal Commissioner.

While parting from the meeting, we again expressed our thoughts that any
attempt to take that parcel of land would leave us with no choice but to
protest more vigourously on the Road and the next step could be the
protest

at AZAD Maidan.

We would like to inform you that the community had organised similar
protests in the recent past, the prominent one being on 25th, December,
2016; being the day of CHRISTMAS, near Our Lady of Remedy Church. Prior to
this, on 18th, June, 2016; the community marched to BMC R South office.

Among those who were part of the delegation: Dolphy D'souza,
Spokesperson,
Save Our Land [SOUL], Rita D'sa, President- The Bombay Catholic
Sabha[BCS ],

Adv. Godfrey Pimenta , Trustee Watchdog Foundation, Ramsey Rebello,
Convenor- Guardians United, Lawrence Fernandes, VP-BCS and several others

This Protest Campaign was organised by The Bombay Catholic Sabha,
Guardians

United, Watchdog Foundation, and Save Our Land [SOUL]. We have enclosed a
few photographs.

We also thank the Sr. Inspector of Police, Shri Mukund Pawar of the
Kandivali Police Station and his team for their bandobast.

Thank you for your support to our cause and look forward to your
continuted

coverage of this issue.

[Goanet] Standing in Solidarity with Teesta and Javed.

2015-07-21 Thread Dolphy D'souza

Dear Friends,

Standing in Solidarity with Teesta and Javed today, July 20th at the CBI Office
at Mumbai.

Over 100 citizens and activists were present today in Solidarity with Teesta
and Javed at the venue of the CBI office in Mumbai.

It is unfortunate that instead of awarding them for fighting for justice, the
Government is hounding them as criminals. It is a political vendetta of a
sinister kind.

By such an action the Government is trying to terrorise all those who are a
dissenting voices or fighting for humanrights that they keep silent.

Time for us to speak up and take a stand.

This approach will surely fail as Teesta is not alone. I am Teesta. We all are
Teesta.

P.S. The Anticipatory Bail plea hearing is on Tuesday, July 21 at the
Sessions Court room no 47 , 2nd Floor at 11.00 a.m. Please be with Teesta and

[Goanet] Whom do we vote in the forthcoming Parliamentary elections , is the question rankling the Community? Pass on the message.

2014-04-03 Thread Dolphy D'souza

Dear Friends,

"Elections belong to the people. It's their decision. If they decide to turn
their back on the fire and burn their behinds, they they will just have to sit
on their blisters" Abraham Lincoln

There is a lot of disinformation being circulated about the address by Fr.
Cedric Prakash of Gujarat organised by the Sabha Unit of Mt. Carmel's in
Bandra.

>From the information we have gathered from reliable sources who attended this
>meeting some of the facts are distorted.

Fr. Cedric whom I know personally for the last 18 years or so is a very bold
defender of human rights and he walks his talks. He is a great inspiration for
all human right and civil activists. In the frightening atmosphere of the
type of fascism that has taken root in Gujarat, he has stood his ground.

Knowing Fr. Cedric, he is a last person to tone down or be brow beaten in
expressing his view points strongly. One does not have to shout to convey the
message but offcourse to drive home the point in view that it was predominantly
a christian gathering was to connect with the gospel stories.

We need to be bold when taking a stand and we do salute the Sabha Unit of Mt.
Carmels and the Parish Priest which organised this meeting.

What is interesting to note is that one of our community members who was
aligned or sympathetic to the BJP complained to the Police about this meeting.
It happened more so because Fr. Cedric is known for his views against human
rights violations taking place in Gujarat. So there was an attempt made to
derail this meeting which did not happen because the rest were all united.

It goes on to prove that "No one can take away our freedom of expression if we
are united".

The country really does not need a cultic or a strong leader. Our country of
diversity and pluralism and multi-talented citizens requiries an ennobling
leader in the mould of Mahatma Gandhi or Nelson Mandela.

On the other hand, we need a strong citizen movement to counter any such
dictatorial leadership and ensure democratic functioning of the Government in
power, upholding the rule of law, protection of the minorities and all other
communities and safe guarding the Constitution.

Hence as Fr. Cedric has expressed, we need leadership that will protect the
Constitution and safeguard equally the fundamental rights of its citizens
irrespective of their caste, creed or religion.

Therefore, Communalism is more dangerous than Corruption. Let us not be allured
by the vision of development which keeps 80 percent of our people out of the
benefits of such development and only a few get richer at the cost of the
others.

It is interesting to observe that in the 2009 parliamentary elections in the
North Mumbai Constituency the voting percentage was just 42%. The community
voting in this constituency was 65 % against the overall 42 % because the
community chose to come out and vote in large numbers because of a sustained
motivational campaign by community groups.

Naomi Klein had stated:" Democracy is not just the right to vote, it is the
right to live in dignity"

We need to have the vision of one united and peaceful India. Every Vote will
therefore count. Hence "None of the Above" [NOTA] should not be an option as it
is a wasted vote. But the call is to do strategic voting, mobilise citizens
in our areas for an ambitious 100 % turnout for voting thus ensuring the
preservation and protection of our Constitution, the plural ethos and the rich
diversity of our great nation.

URGENT MEDIA INVITE :

The Chief Reporter,

National Inauguration of www.feku.in

This website is about Gujarat, Modi, Development and other hotly debated topics.

(On behalf of the Collective)

Cell: 09820226227

Brief Backgrounder:

www.pheku.in is a new and forward moving engagement with India's new struggle
for democratic space. The last five years has seen a significant and often
angry civil society mobilization against what is perceived as a descent into
anarchy and authoritarian actions by the state. The decade long rule of the UPA
government has not only led to the sporadic ignition of youth anger but also
created the space for the emergence of a fascist politician in Narendra Modi on
to the national stage. Like all fascists Modi presents a model of efficiency
and effective rule to a beleaguered nation and like most fascists this model of
efficiency and growth is based on lies, half-truths and a million dollar PR
industry.
But such a moment when a fascist alternative is being sold to civil society, is
also the moment which can produce a creative challenge. www.pheku.in offers
such a challenge by putting every creation of the Modi PR machinery under the
scanner. Our objective with pheku.in is two-fold: to build a new democratic
imaginary by exposing the record of the most authoritarian politician in India
today and simultaneously produce a new level of engagement for the youth in
Indian politics. pheku.in's team is located in 15 different states across India
and 4 cities outside the country.
The unique combination of Modi's authoritarianism, his deeply communal record,
and his ability to lie smoothly is the fertile ground on which pheku.in will
flourish. Already some exposures of his smooth lies - such as his Himalayan
miracle - have been exposed. Our examinations reveal hundreds more that need to
be unveiled. These lie along several dimensions - his destruction of democratic
institutions in Gujarat, scams of enormous proportions and needless to say, his
Pheks - from which we get our name. Any politician responsible for the
slaughter of over 2000 minorities and several encounter killings should be
beyond the pale as a Prime Ministerial aspirant. But a beleaguered nation
engages all hope even when such hope is mere Chimera. Pheku.in, we hope, will
be part of a new era of democratic upsurge in India.

[Goanet] URGENT PRESS STATEMENT: Massive support to the PROTEST AT ALL RAILWAY STATIONS- AUGUST 12 BETWEEN 9.30 A.M. TO 10.30 P.M. - NO AMENDMENTS TO RTI.

2013-08-12 Thread Dolphy D'souza

URGENT PRESS STATEMENT:

RE: Massive support to "NO TO RTI AMENDMENT- PROTEST DAY" ON AUGUST 12 FROM
9.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. Thousands rally around at the various Railway Stations
condemning the move by the Government to immunise political parties outside the
purview of the RTI by amending the RTI Act.

In response to the call given by Shri Shailesh Gandhi, former Central
Information Commissioner the protest by citizens,RTI Activists and Civil
Society received massive support all over Mumbai. The turnout at the Railway
stations was spontaneous.

Mr. Shailesh Gandhi, the former Central Information Commissioner had urged
Mumbaikars to protest against the blatant attempt by those in power to
circumvent the law.

Mr. Gandhi had stated,"Parliament has the right to frame laws. But once this is
done, to change it for their own benefits is completely third rate and
unacceptable"

Some of the Organisations who participated : Tarun Mitra Mandal, Watchdog
Foundation, Members of the Bombay Catholic Sabha, Mahiti Adhikar Manch,
Political and Civic Cells of the Church in the City, Save Our Land
[SOUL]Committee, Aam Admi Volunteers, Police Reforms Watch and several others.

Noted RTI and Citizen Activists to name a few: Mr. Shailesh Gandhi, Bhaskar
Prabhu, Mohammed Afzal, Suleiman Bhimani., Rishi Agarwal, Gaurang Vora, Rajesh
Gada, Samir Jhaveri, Stanley Fernandez, Gaurang Damani, Greg Pereira, Willie
Shirshat, Shirish Shanbag, Kamlakar Shenoy, Chris Fernandes, Godfrey Pimenta,
Nicholas Almeida, Rajesh Gada, Bhavesh Pandhya ,Anjali Damania, Robin Veigas,
Dolphy D'souza and many more

The participation of the citizens covered Railway stations from Borivali
Station to Churchgate and CST to Thane and in a few localities also witnessed
participation.

We urge that the Government and the Political Parties listen to the voice of
disgust from the common citizens and not venture into the adventure of amending
the RTI

 to suit their nefarious purposes.

We urge the Government and the Parliamentarians not to support this amendment
to RTI as this is a direct assault on the democratic rights of the citizens.

The RIGHT TO INFORMATION ACT IS A CITIZENS ACT AND NO ONE HAS A RIGHT TO
TAMPER WITH IT.

 Hope better sense prevails.

We have also enclosed a few photographs of the protests at some of the Railways
Stations.

Thank you for your support.

The Minorities in Maharashtra are concerned with such a development and need an
answer from the Chief Minister that there are no plans to introduce such an
Anti-Minority Legislation in Maharashtra.

Hon'ble Chief Minister,
Government of Maharashtra,
Mantralaya, Mumbai 400 21.

Kind Attn: Shri Prithviraj Chavan.

Re: Is an Anti-Conversion Bill under consideration by your Maharashtra
Government?

Dear Respected Shri Prithviraj Chavanji,

Greetings.

It has been brought to our attention through reliable sources that there is
move to introduce an Anti-Conversation Bill by your Government.

First it was a total disbelief and then a shocking surprise if this is true,
that a secular Government in the State of Maharashtra would ever think of
introducing such a Bill which is anti-minority and against the Constitutional
rights of a Minority.

We are asking you a question Sir, Is this Anti-Conversion Bill happening??
Need your response and clarifications.

Just to refresh your memory:

In 1996, BJP Legislator from Mumbai, Shri Mangal Prabhat Lodha had introduced
as a private member's bill under the name of 'The Maharashtra Dharma
Swantantrya Adhiniyam[ Maharashtra Freedom of Religion Act] but it did not see
the light of the day.

Than in April 2005, An Anti-Conversion Bill was proposed by the then Home
Minister Shri Siddharam Mhetre of the Cong/ NCP combine but was struck down by
the then Chief Minister, Late Shri Vilasrao Deshmukh.

Shri Deshmukh's comments were telling:" There was no need for anti-conversion
legislation as the existing laws had enough provisions".

Sir, Such a legislation would not only be anti-minority but would increase the
persecution of the Minorities.

We therefore appeal to you to consign such an " Anti-Conversion Bill" to the
dustbin of history.

Look forward to your postive response.

[Goanet] Stop the harrassment of the Christian Institutions.

URGENT PRESS STATEMENT.

RE; HARRASMENT OF MINORITY SCHOOLS BY THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT MUST STOP. IS
THERE A METHOD IN THE MADNESS BY THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT IN SELECTIVELY
TARGETING SOME OF THE MINORITY EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS.

We have observed since the last couple of months how some of the Minority
Educational Institutions have been the focus of target, consistently by the
Education Department.

It appears there seems to be an agenda of vindictiveness in selecting
Institutions which over decades have given their best in imparting education.

If there are issues that need to be addressed than they should be handled in a
more dignified manner than in humiliating ways. The Minority Institutions are
provide a service which the Government of the day has failed in so many ways.

During the admission time, the Institutions have faced pressures from the
Politicians and the new trend has been the pressure exerted by the Education
Department.

Such harrassment will not be tolerated by the Christian Community. We urge the
Chief Minister of Maharashtra and the Education Minister to step in to ensure
that such intimidation and harrassment is stopped forthwith and all matters
sorted out amicably.

[Goanet] URGENT PRESS STATEMENT. Welcomes Pope washing women's feet.

2013-03-30 Thread Dolphy D'souza

URGENT PRESS STATEMENT.

I was delighted to read the news article with different headlines in todays'
several newspapers " Pope washes women's feet , breaks church rule"

Pope Francis has set the tone and lived by example by this gesture on women
empowerment which needs to be accelerated in the church of today.

I recall a personal episode in the late 1990's when the Late Fr.Hugh Fonseca,
one of the few activist Priests during his time, was the Parish Priest of Our
Lady of Lourdes Church, Orlem, Malad West and I was the Chairman of the Parish
Pastoral Council of the said Parish.

Fr. Hugh Fonseca also thought many of us the role activism has to play for a
just society and always guided and supported us in taking stands against
injustices of every kind.

At the Parish Council meeting it was decided that on Maundy Thursday ritual,
during the Mass the Priest would wash the feet of the 12 Female House Workers.

We had located the 12 female house workers from the Parish and on the appointed
day when we reported early, Fr. Hugh Fonseca said : "I knew this would happen"

Some Parishioners had complained to the Bishop about this and Fr. Hugh Fonseca
was told by the concerned Bishop that washing of the Female House Workers was
against the Cannon Law and was directed to abandon such a move.

Fr. Hugh Fonseca was much ahead of his time and while he relented keeping in
mind his obedience to his Bishop, he washed the feet of the 12 Male House
Workers at the altar.

But directed me to wash the feet of the selected Female House Workers at the
same time in the midst of the community below the altar.

Holy Father's actions at the Holy Thursday ritual sets an example and a
message to ensure that women are given their due place in the church of
today.

[Goanet] Urgent Press Note

URGENT PRESS STATEMENT:

RE; NEW PROPERTY TAX AND THE GAMES BMC PLAYS AND FAILS TO UNDERSTAND THE
SENTIMENTS OF THE CITIZENS.

We have seen headlines in some of the esteemed newspapers of today that the BMC
is contemplating to extend the March 31 tax payment deadline as it appears
citizens will not be able to face the burden of paying taxes with retrospective
effect at one go.

It is rather unfortunate that the BMC, State Government and the Politicians
have not sensed the mood of the citizens and are really testing their patience
when the demand is to relook at the way the New Property Tax is computed. The
formula for calculation on New Property Tax based on Capital Value is flawed ,
unjust and unreasonnable. There is no rationalisation of taxes at all.

Our demands are very clear and are listed below. Nothing short of it will
soothe the ruffled feelings of the citizens.
Some of the demands are as follows:

1. To stay the implementation of the present new property tax based on capital
value with immediate effect till such time a just formula is worked out for
the computation of the tax and BMC to adopt old rateable value till such time
85% mandatory mapping is complete.

2. BMC should immediately complete GIS mapping wherever possible or else
underatke door to door survey to bring all properties under tax net.

3. The new valuation rules be simply linked to area of occupation in
Sq..ft[carpet area] which is being followed by the various municipal
corporations in the country, including Pune Municipal Corporation.

4. Only statutory exemptions to be allowed [ properties under 500 sq.ft / SRA
should be brought under full tax net]

5. SRA Flats occupied by persons other than originally allotee within a period
of 10 years from the date of allotment should be seized and confiscated.

6. Setting up of group consisting of eminent Experts / NGO'S / Elected
representatives which can study the existing systems, analyse problems and
adopt the best solutions.

We on behalf of honest Property Tax Payers of Mumbai, are aghast and upset in

MUMBAI CONSULTATION ON POLICE REFORMS: 'BETTER POLICING -SAFER CITY: HOW TO
MAKE IT HAPPEN

Date: Friday, 22 February, 2013

Venue: USTAV BANQUET HALL, JAMSHEDJI TATA ROAD CHURCHGATE

PRESS STATEMENT ON THE DELIBERATIONS AT THE ABOVE MEETING: 22/02/13

The COMMONWEALTH HUMAN RIGHTS INITIATIVE [ CHRI] Delhi in association with
Citizen Initiative for Peace (CIP), Praja, PCGT, M R. Pai Foundation. Akshara,
Forum against Oppression of Women and Forum of Free Enterprise organized this
event.

A meeting of over 80 of the leading activists representing over 30
organisations / civil society in Mumbai voiced deep concern about the state of
women's safety and indeed the safety of all mumbaikars.

Attended by no less personage as Shri Julio Rebeiro, [ Former Mumbai Police
Commissioner], Dr. Shri A.N Roy [Former Director General of Police, Maharashtra
], Shri Shailesh Gandhi [ former Central Information Commissioner ]. Mr.
Satish Sahney [Former Mumbai Police Commissioner], leading Advocates, Women and
Rights Activists and concerned Citizens.

The discussions pointed out that despite the bitter complaints against the
inefficiencies of policing in Mumbai, its bias's and violence, police
performance was failing the public. Bandage remedies such as transfers or
punishment postings will not do. There is a need for root and branch
improvement. The constabulary have to be better equipped not with arms and
ammunition but with a better value system that ensures that there will be more
responsive and less illegal policing and better all round every day performance.

The leadership must ensure that the ordinary constable has good working
conditions decent wages and better hours of work. Training must be imparted
to the police personnel in educating on high standards to human rights, gender
sensitivity and respecting multi-religious diversity. At the same time they
must take responsibility for lapses in policing and be completely accountable.

The political administration is responsible for delivering better policing that
has the confidence of the public in Maharastra.

The meeting also called the State Government to implement the Police Reforms as
outlined in the Supreme Court Judgement of 2006. The Supreme Court had given
certain directions in view of the urgent need for preservation and
strengthening of the Rule of Law. It had prescribed the setting up of three
institutions in the state: A State Security Commission, Police Establishment
Board and Police Complaints Authority, in other words calling for a systemic
changes into the functioning of the PoliceDepartment.

It must lay down policing policies and targets to be achieved in the year
after creating a political plan. This plan must be made in consultation with
local communities and be a public document against which police performance can
be evaluated and judged. It is only when communities are engaged with
policing that the police will gain public confidence.

The meeting called for the State Security Commission to put in place a credible
planning process in which enhanced safety of women and vulnerable groups such
as children, migrants and minorities is specially addressed.

The meeting also agreed to a plan of action to make this an election issue for
the forthcoming 2014 elections and demand from the Political parties to not
only include this in their manifesto but ensure that the Police Reforms are
implemented thereafter .

Hence it becomes necessary for the incumbent Government to bring in the
police reforms without any further delay during their current tenure.

The meeting agreed to work together with police and administration in creating
better policing outcomes for the city and asked all Mumbaikars to join in this
effort.

Issued by Dolphy D'souza, Citizens Initiative for Peace [CIP] & Ms Maja
Daruwalla , Director CHRI, Organising Committee and the participants of the
meeting .

[Goanet] URGENT PRESS RELEASE . Stop shedding crocodile tears elected representatives. Stop the implementation of the New Property Tax is our demand.

2013-02-15 Thread Dolphy D'souza

URGENT PRESS RELEASE

We are amused to read the news item in today's Times of India " CM told to
stay new property tax system"

It was due to the public outcry over the unjust levy and hike in property tax
that has awakened the elected representatives from their deep slumber.

We kindly request the Member of Parliament from North Mumbai not to provide
mere lip service but to do something concrete to stop this introduction of new
property tax. The said MP is trying to cash on the public outcry against the
said property tax and nothing more. The Government of Maharashtra in the year
2010 had tried to introduce this new property tax but because of the hue and
cry by the citizens, the Government had to abandon its implementation.

It is a matter of record that till date not a single elected representative
including the M.P from North Mumbai, nor MLA nor Corporator nor any political
parties have raised or opposed such unjust and irrational property tax.. If the
elected representatives were so concerned why did they not debate on this
issue before being implemented and why the crocodile tears now. Is it to gain
the sympathy of the voters?

Why tax only the honest tax payers? .

It is also a matter of record that the development funds allotted to M.P's [5
crores per year] , MLA's [ 2 CRORES] Corporators [1.35 Crore], 90 PERCENT of
these funds are utlised for the benefit of slum dewellers who do not pay
property tax. Our humble request is to stop robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Since the last three weeks several NGO'S like Sahar Citizens' Forum, Moneylife
Foundation, Property Owners Association, The Watchdog Foundation, ALM 144,
Civic & Political Cell of St. Vincent de Paul, Save Our Land [SOUL TEAM]
including Citizens have been raising a hue and cry on this draconian new
property tax.

The BMC has perfected the classical played divide and rule policy of the
Britishers of targeting only 19 percent of the property owners/ residents who
are covered in this new property tax for now.

They have very cleverly excluded all those whose properties which are 500 SQ
Feet carpet and below for now. BMC has indirectly hinted that this category
will be taxed with retrospective effect after 5 years with maximum 40 percent
tax increase.

On the other hand owing to vote bank politics, the 60 percent of the Slum
Dwellers have been excluded from the property tax ambit . If the Government is
so benovelent than they must pay for the Slum Dwellers so that the burden on
the other property tax payers can be reduced. We are not per se against the
slum deweller because they have been created by the illogical policies of the
state government in not creating affordable housing in and around mumbai

Also the BMC must plug existing loopholes in the various departments
particularly the Octroi, road maintenance, garbage collection and license
departments. Despite the High Court passing strictures against the BMC in
September 2011 to plug the loopholes nothing seems to have been done. In the
process more more scams are happening running into crores of rupees thereby
wasting tax payers money. If this corruption is arrested by taking appropriate
steps, then there is no need to increase any taxes including property tax for
another 10 years.

Aristotle had wisely commented: " The most perfect political community is one
in which the middle class is in control and outnumbers both of the other
classes".

The middle class is getting organised because of the tyranny of the Government
in pushing them in a corner owing to such policies. If the Government is still
bent on implementing the property tax under the new rules it will have to bear
the consequences at the forthcoming elections to be held on 2014.

Mr. M.P if you are really so serious of protecting the interests of the honest
tax payers from payment of unjust and increased amount of property tax, than
it is our humble request please ensure that the implementation of the new
property tax is stopped forthwith.

Dear Madam / Sir,

Seminars / Programmes as per details below:

The Watchdog Foundation, SOUL Team and Civic and Political Cell of St. Vincent
de Paul Church, Khar have organised the three seminars as follows:

1.Sunday, 03 February at 10.30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church School
Hall , Marol, Andheri East at 10.30 a.m.

2. Sunday, 03 February at 6.00 p.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Church Quadrangle ,
Khar West.

Keynote Speaker: Adv. Godfrey Pimenta

Brief Synopsis:

Such seminars will address the core issues of the basis of valuation being
done.

Just to apprise you that the Base Value being adopted by the Asst. Assessor &
Collector from the Ready Recknor itself is faulty. There are catena of
judgments including that of Supreme Court which have held that the property
rate given in the Ready Recknor, which Govt. of Maharashtra publishes every
January is only for the purposes of determining the stamp duty and does not
reflect the true market value of the property in given case.

The Ready Reckoner does not take into consideration various parameters of
valuation such as physical, legal, social and economic factors to arrive at the
fair market value of the property. It does not take into consideration various
planning and design aspects, quality and materials used in construction,
building regulations, conditions of money markets, estimated future life of the
building, effect of outgoings to be paid for the property, title of the owner,
unexpired period of lease, encumbrances in the property, surroundings of the
property such as proximity to zopadpatti/slums, frontage, allowance for joint
ownership, effect of various Acts such as Urban Land Ceiling Act/CRZ etc. It
is a cardinal principle of valuation of property that likes should be compared
with likes and to arrive at the correct value, the due allowance should be
given for factors, which enhance or depress the value.

We are attaching herewith the Ready Recknor rates for Marol Village for better
understanding.

[Goanet] Your presence on Sunday, June 22 at 10.00 a.m.

2008-06-21 Thread Dolphy D'Souza

Hello Sabhaites and Friends,

Re: Meeting in support of Sisters at Mary Immaculate Girl's H. School,
Jeevan Bima Nagar, next Karuna Hospital , Borivali West at 10.00 a.m on
Sunday, June 22.

We want a large turnout for this meeting. A brief details of what happened
is given below and our specific demands. We also need to plan our future
course of action.

RE; THE BOMBAY CATHOLIC SABHA CONDEMNS THE INTIMADATORY TACTICS OF MNS
ACTIVISTS ON THE SISTERS WHO ARE MANAGING THE MARY IMMACULATE GIRL'S HIGH
SCHOOL, BORIVALI.
SEEKS INTERVENTION OF THE DEPUTY CHIEF MINISTER / HOME MINISTER TO
PROVIDE POLICE PROTECTION TO THE SISTERS AND THE INSTITUTION AND ALL CONVENT
SCHOOLS IN MUMBAI.

The activists of the MNS barged into the school premises of Mary Immaculate
Girl's High School, Jeevan Bima Nagar, Borivali West on June19, 2008. The
mob was unruly and behaved in a threatening manner., hurling abuses and
derogatory remarks against the School Principal and Manager who happened to
be Nuns. We are surprised that they have not been taught elementary manners
how to behave with women. This pressure tactic was a ruse to seek
admissions.

The local DCP Mr. Ranade was very helpful

But the Sisters have been terified by such type of goonda tactics.

We understand that they have threatened the Institution that they would
return back on June 24th at 10.00 a.m. They have also threatened if their
demands are not met than they will shut down the school for an indefinite
period of time. This warning is not limited only to your school but to all
convent schools.

We demand the following:

1. The intervention of the Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister to
provide police protection to the Sisters and the said Institution and to all
Convent Schools.

2. Restraining order on such elements
3. Our constitutional rights as a Minority Institution should be protected
at all times.

4. Apprehend the culprits and prosecute them accordingly.

The Bombay Catholic Sabha will monitor the situation and plan its future
course of action accordingly.
