Photos at http://fredericknoronha.wordpress.com Remembering yesterday’s Goa… via Benaulim PHOTOFEATURE :: By Frederick Noronha Victor Hugo Gomes had been bugging me to visit Benaulim, and, as usual, I kept postponing. A man of few words (except when he’s writing detailed articles on themes like Goan music!), he just kept telling me, “You come and see for yourself.” Finally, we did make it there. His collection was the most amazing set of objects of the Goa of the yesteryears that I’ve seen at one place. That this artist and former curator of the Museum of Christian Art had done it all by himself, no state funding, and in his own home (with support of his lecturer-wife Alie, short for Aldina) is all the more creditworthy. In his collection, you can unwrap the story of Goa’s agriculture, cullinary practices and more. There are pots of every shape and size from yesterday’s Goa. There are spoons, and other kitchen utensils. Another collection deals with agricultural implements, and the technology — however simple, it was effective and sustainable — of the Goa of the past. On Monday evening, November 2, 2009, Mario Miranda inaugurates the Goa Chitra museum, as Gomes calls it. As we forget what life was in yesterday’s Goa, this venture is a powerful reminder of a simple people, living simple sustainble lives. In a manner that probably made us more contented than we are today. SEE VIDEO HERE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovA3haaDmO4 Knoppix, or KNOPPIX (pronounced /kəˈnɒpɪks/, kə-NOP-iks[2]), is an operating system based on Debian designed to be run directly from a CD / DVD, one of the first of its kind for any operating system. Knoppix was developed by GNU/Linux consultant Klaus Knopper. When starting a program it is loaded from the optical disc and decompressed into a RAM drive. The decompression is transparent and on-the-fly. Although Knoppix is primarily designed to be used as a Live CD, it can also be installed on a hard disk like a typical operating system. Computers that support booting from USB devices can load Knoppix from a live USB flash drive or memory card. Animesh Nerurkar of Goa demos Knoppix 6 from his home at Miramar. Oct 20, 2009. [Goanet] Why blame Konkani musicians (alone)?
Since everyone is blaming Konkani musicians for plagarising others, let me plagarise some argument from others to show why this is not the case: From my Bangalore-based friend Lawrence Liang, who makes the point very lucidly: OPENQUOTE The history of copying, appropriation and plagiarism is in fact central to the history of various forms of cultural production, including music The act of copying has been central to the ways in which culture has flowed through various parts of the world, transcending the limitations set by space and time. Thus a Polish folk song, Szla dzieweczka do gajeczka, becomes a part of Indian popular consciousness through its adaptation as Salil Chaudhury's Dil Tadap Tadap Ke from Madhumati. Secondly, the creation of music has always relied on adaptations, influences and inspirations, whether conscious or unconscious. It would be unfortunate if as a result of aggressive copyright suits, we reach a situation like the United States where even subconscious copying is held to be infringement. In a case brought by a band, The Chiffons, against former Beatle George Harrison, the court held that Harrison's My Sweet Lord was in infringement of The Chiffons' He's so fine, even though the judge believed that Harrison did not intentionally copy the song and had only been inspired by it subconsciously. The history of creativity has been marked with a certain generosity in drawing the line between inspiration and mala fide copying, a line better guarded by the ethics of aesthetic practices than by strict penal laws of property. Music scholars have argued, for instance, that hip-hop, which relies on sampling existing tunes, has become less exciting as a result of the chilling effect that copyright has had on the ability to sample. Music has always posed a challenge to traditional ideas of copyright, and while it is well known that copyright merely protects ideas and not expressions, music complicates the idea-expression distinction further. Noted copyright scholar Siva Vaidyanathan asks: Is the six-string note of Happy Birthday To You an idea or an expression? Would playing the same note at different tempos constitute a new expression of the same idea? Would playing it differently on a different key constitute a new expression of the same idea? We need to recognise that different forms of cultural creations have a different relation to the act of copying. Rajesh Mehar in his history of Indian rock music has shown us that the act of copying was central to the way people learnt music, and it may be a better idea to rethink the one-size-fits-all approach that informs copyright law ENDQUOTE The writer, a lawyer and cultural theorist, co-founded the Alternative Law Forum in Bangalore Lawrence {AT} altlawforum.org http://www.nettime.org/Lists-Archives/nettime-l-0805/msg2.html Some more background on this issue (something I came across online): BORROWING AND MUSIC Borrowing is a pervasive aspect of musical creation in all genres and all time periods. The reality of such borrowing in music is often discussed in legal discussions of postmodern forms and other contemporary forms of musical production such as hip hop music. Such discussions, however, often do not adequately take account of the widespread nature of musical borrowing in all time periods and genres. This tendency to inadequately represent musical borrowing is integrally connected to notions of copyright and originality that were increasingly predominant by the time of adoption of modern copyright frameworks by the nineteenth century. BORROWING OF CLASSICAL MUSIC Considering of musical borrowing should start with assessment of musical borrowing in the classical tradition. This is particularly true since conceptions of classical music creation are often at least implicit benchmarks by which other forms of musical production may be measured Johann Sebastian Bach, for example, borrowed from composers such as Telemann, Frescobaldi, Albinioni, and Vivaldi. Bach thus altered, arranged and developed his own work and works of other composers. Similarly, Haydn used melodic source material from various sources. In addition to borrowing melodies from other composers, Mozart both borrowed from and was influenced by other composers, including Haydn and Bach. Beethoven reworked his existing music in more than a third of his compositions. Beethoven also borrowed from existing music and other composers, including works of Cherubini and Clementi Intellectual property and information wealth By Peter K. Yu Pg 34-35. The ad hoc committee, headed by Aldona MLA Dayanand Narvekar, has in its report stated that it is of utmost importance for the state to preserve and conserve artifacts, paintings, manuscripts and other objects of art in its possession as Goa's history finds expression through these. Stating that expert knowledge is essential to protect these pieces of art, specially paintings, objects of wood, paper, metal, etc, the committee has stated that it is necessary for the state to have professional guidance and skilled persons to look after these artifacts. Pointing out that inspite of the state musuem being commissioned in 1996 it still lacks the necessary requirements, the committee has stated that Goa requires its own conservatory laboratory to preserve and protect its holdings as preservation and conservation is a continous process. The report states that the committee is dismayed at the careless attitude of the government in holding pieces of art and stocking them without being displayed only due to lack of space, and asked the government to take immediate action to remedy this situation. The ad hoc committee observed that the department of musuems being a small one, the government has not made any constructive efforts to develop it either by providing necessary skilled and trained manpower nor equipment for preserving and protecting artifacts for posterity. While calling for sufficient budgetory allocation for the department of museums, the panel stated that the government should engage experts to advise on upgrading the museum. The committee said that even as it appreciates efforts made by the department for publicizing the state museums, this alone will not go a long way. It also praised the department in creating awareness among students about the state's heritage and suggested that the government should also include excursions to museums in the school curriculum. The panel also suggested that the museum be kept open on weekends and holidays to attract more visitors, and its viewing timings be extended up to 6.30pm. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/NEWS/City/Goa/Artifacts-at-state-museum-poorly-maintained/articleshow/4843925.cms -- FN +91-9822122436 P +91-832-2409490 Konkani adages http://konkani-adages.notlong.com/ Medieval Goa http://medieval-goa.notlong.com/

[Goanet] Computers... in panchayats
Would anyone know of how effectively computers are being used in panchayats in Goa? There have been a number of official claims made on this, but I've not seen much evidence that matches up. Some statements made on the issue: TO THE PANCHAYATS: The Government of Goa had taken up e-Governance initiatives in various areas including the state transport department and land records—a project called Dharni. National Informatics Centre (NIC)’s e-Gov project which is about setting up of Common Services Centres (CSCs) was also on in the state. Another important scheme was InfoGram, as part of which 109 village panchayats were to be connected through the Internet in a year’s time. Panduronga S. S. Pissurlencar's [http://openlibrary.org/a/OL10495A/Panduronga-S.-S.-Pissurlencar] index/listing of documents contained in the Goa archives has just been republished. When I passed by today, I ran into a copy (printed by the Government Printing Press, Panjim*, 2009). It is printed on simple paper, and priced at just Rs 30. Unfortunately, I could not purchase a copy, as it had not yet been inventoried and approved for official sale! Just thought of sharing this with those interested. It's in Portuguese, and a reprint of the 1955 (I think) original work. [Goanet] Rochelle Pinto... and a Call for a South Asian Collective of Archivists and Historians
http://www.cis-india.org/research/cis-raw/histories-of-the-internet/archives-and-access/call-for-a-south-asian-collective-of-archivists-and-historians Call for a South Asian Collective of Archivists and Historians by Aparna Balachandran — last modified Jun 22, 2009 11:32 AM Filed Under: * Open Access In this blog entry, CIS-RAW researchers Aparna Balachandran and Rochelle Pinto (working on the project 'Archive and Access), along with five other researchers, invite archivists, librarians and historians from South Asia to form a collective that focuses on issues of access. If we could eavesdrop on informal conversations between historians on their experiences of working in archives, we would probably chance upon a rich trove of stories. Many of these would have to do with the tragi-comic experience of accessing, finding and handling precious material that is sure not to survive the conditions in which it is stored. Yet, the conditions of preservation, while undoubtedly important, are scarcely the only concern when we approach the question of the archive. A conventional approach to archives would be one that sees manuscript and paper archives as a source for researchers alone, or as a pedagogic appendage, or as a national legacy, held permanently in safekeeping away from those whose psyche it is supposed to buttress. As a generality however, taking an average archive into consideration, preservation is achieved by exercising tight control on disappearing documents. While archives of the contemporary often discuss questions of public access and rights of digital publics, they skirt around the issue of accessing relatively protected government archives. The transition from print to digital format does not ensure that issues of state ownership, access and generating potential different users for archives will be addressed. In fact it is only too easy to imagine continuous control across the transition to another technology. On another note, the transition to digital technology and private ownership has actually presented archivists and historians with a further quandary. The digital archive in a well-funded private university setting such as can be found in the US, or in a state institution as in the UK is often set up as a private asset that enables holding organizations to use digital technology to ‘complete’ their archival collections, drawing in private collections from countries that cannot afford preservation and enhancing their own closed holdings. It may be well to set aside a nationalist perspective here, for it can be argued that those documents that are withheld from public circulation in India are at least available elsewhere, even if it is difficult to access them. The issue here is that while currently the archives continue to be housed and controlled by national institutions, we probably cannot retain a nationalist perspective to address the question of archives anymore. Aside from being positioned between two approaches: a rapid acquisition policy with respect to private holdings and a relatively inaccessible state policy, we could also be seen as the (illegitimate?) repository of other national holdings. Communities disaffected from the nation see their archival holdings as illegitimately if safely housed in dominant regional libraries. Each area could possibly produce varying positions vis-à-vis the nationalist perspective and not just about illegitimacy of ownership. These will be rendered untenable if one sustains a singularly nationalist perspective on the archive. What is at issue is that we currently have a restricted number of print archive models at hand. The most dominant are the stateist and the knowledge economy model. The knowledge economy model seeks to make a single repository such as a well-funded University library, the single largest holding of historical material; an asset into which other Universities can buy. II How do we, as historians of India (and perhaps necessarily Indian historians) situate ourselves with respect to these two models? As a first move, there is a need to shift from seeing ourselves in relation to the state archives alone, or as a relatively silent entity positioned between the state and the knowledge economy, dependent on individual research grants for a few to access overseas archives. This note is an invitation to archivists, librarians and historians from South Asia to form a collective that focuses on issues of access. The collective will have no legal status, and will function as an interest group with a rotating central committee with a rotating advisory board currently consisting of Professors Neeladri Bhattacharya (Jawaharlal Nehru University) and Lakshmi Subramaniam (Jamia Millia Islamia). Members of the collective will be invited to be a part of an online discussion forum that will attempt to address a range of issues including: * The paucity of public information about state and private archival collections, big and small,

[Goanet] Dr Rafael Fernandes's study of the tiatro... an abstract
TIATRO : A CRITICAL STUDY [Ph.D. Thesis by Andre Rafael Fernandes] Abstract The study traces the development of Tiatro from its various origins. Whereas the general impression is that this dramatic form began in 1892 in Bombay, the thesis traces Tiatro’s genesis to the traditional Zagors and Khells which have evolved over several centuries from ancient performances. The study documents available references from the earliest Portuguese plays in Goa. The developments in Music and Song [both Indian and Western] are tracked and their integral functions in Tiatros is indicated. The research accounts for variations in the spelling of Tiatro and studies diverse aspects such as Genres, Thematic concerns, Phases of growth, Structure, use of language, roles of actors, women, set designing, lighting, innovations, stage management, publicity, censorship, limitations and audience participation, etc. The thesis gives due credit to, and highlights the contribution of João Agostinho Fernandes, rightly regarded as Pai Tiatrist the ‘Father of Tiatro’. Several of his major plays are analysed and their impact assessed. João Agostinho is found to be not just an excellent ground-breaking playwright but also a forceful votary of social reform. An important contribution of this research is the innovative documentation of João Agostinho’s manuscripts, handbills, brochures, news clippings, reviews and related items in his collection. He is also presented as a role model for Tiatrists of all times. Hundreds of Tiatrists have kept audiences enthralled for thousands of performances in Goa, Mumbai and elsewhere. On any given weekend during the theatrical season, at least ten shows are held in various parts of Goa. While justice cannot be done to all the Tiatrists, in a study of the present type, an attempt is made to briefly analyse the published plays of nine other playwrights. These are : Aleixinho de Candolim, A. R. Souza Ferrao, Kid Boxer, J. P. Souzalin, C. Alvares, Remmie J. Colaco, John Claro Fernandes, Prem Kumar and M. Boyer. A list of Tiatrists is also appended. Issues, Problems and Challenges in Contemporary Tiatro are discussed in the study. In spite of the general apathy of official / government bodies and the onslaught of cable television and alternative forms of entertainment, it is seen that Tiatro has so far managed to hold its ground as the premier form of staged entertainment for Konkani speakers. Ever since Antonio Piedade Moraes innovated the path-breaking transformation of the ground based khells to stage performances of Khell-Tiatr and the subsequent evolution of the Non-Stop Drama, Tiatro has been enthused with new life and dynamism. With the gradual decline of the Tiatro production in Mumbai and corresponding spurt in formation of Goan troupes, theatrical activities have resurged. Tiatros entertain not just local audiences but also perform for the benefit of emigrants elsewhere in India, the Middle East, London and Toronto. Developments in communication technologies such as the Internet permit the Goan diaspora to be aware of the contemporary artistes and performances. Considering all its inherent strengths, Tiatro has an assured future as a medium of entertainment, education and social transformation. -- FN * http://fredericknoronha.wordpress.com http://twitter.com/fn M +91-9822122436 P +91-832-2409490 http://fredericknoronha.multiply.com/ http://goa1556.goa-india.org The price of greatness is responsibility. - Sir Winston Churchill

[Goanet] Looking out for: Clare Mendonca
Debashree Mukherjee m.debash...@gmail.com is a research student at the Department of Cinema Studies (School of Arts Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University) and is working on a dissertation on film culture in Bombay in the 1930s and 40s. Debasharee writes: I have been trying to historicize the emergence of film journalism at this time and am looking at early 'film critics' like K.A.Abbas and Baburao Patel. There is a substantial amount of fact and legend that exists around these two figures. An individual like Clare Mendonca, however, film critic with the Times of India at the time, has vanished without a trace (except for the Filmfare Awards trivia). I am writing to you on a hunch, and with the hope that you might be able to help me dig up some information on Clare Mendonca and her work. I chanced across a mention of her in a satirical poem posted by you online. I didn't remember that post myself, and had to google to find some tracks. What I found online was this: Joel D'Souza's article on Assonora (probably from Goa Today?): When we recall the name of the late Fr Philip Neri Mendonca, need we mention that he was the most famous Principal of Goa's prime educational institution of yesteryears - the St Joseph's High School in Arpora? His brother Fr William Mendonca taught us English at Don Bosco High School, Panjim. We remember how meticulously he would explain to us Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, how seriously he corrected the essays we wrote and how thrifty he was while giving marks. Fred, Philip and William were brothers. The late Clare Mendonca of Filmfare fame was their sister, while their father Isidore Mendonca was associated with the Anglo Lusitano, a Goan weekly, edited by Ignatius Fonseca. http://www.goacom.com/village/assonora/ Also, Shanti Doot's post: Boribunder. Causing a certain amount of awe, legitimate concern and wonder. Goans like Clare Mendonca and Frank Moraes* Have contributed much to this paper in their days, And as Fred** says, the arrival of the Times of India should not mean plunder. (*Clare Mendonca was an outstanding Film critic and, at their inception, there was talk of naming the Film Awards Clare Awards instead of Filmfare Awards; Frank Moraes was the first Indian editor of the Times of India, an outstanding journalist in his own right.) **Fred Noronha in his open letter to the Times of India dated February 18, 2008) http://www.mail-archive.com/goanet@lists.goanet.org/msg24497.html If any of you has any knowledge of Clare Mendonca, please pass it on to the list, or share it with Debashree.
