*German journalist launches book at Calangute about Modern Day Catholicism

IGSG - Indo German Friendship Society Goa in collaboration with Goa,1556
will launch the book of German journalist Christina Fernandes *Passion in
Paradise: Modern Day Catholicism in Goa* at Literati Bookshop and Cafe,
Calangute on December 20 (Thursday), 2012 at 5.45 pm.

Most people, foreign as well as Indian, think of Goa as a place with
unlimited sun, sea and sand, where beaches and the famous laid back
lifestyle, or sossegado, awaits. But behind this facade lies a different
kind of Goa. Most of its people, no matter their creed, are devoutly
religious and have strong ties to their cultural traditions. Faith in
various forms plays a major role in the lives of most Christians as well as
Hindus. This book written by Christina Fernandes a German journalist who
has done an MA in Photojournalism at the University of Westminster in
London, explores the lives of Catholics in Goa today and aims to describe
the way people live their faith. Passion in Paradise depicts the symbolism,
which plays such an important role in the way the Catholic faith is
practiced by Goans today. Its images show the celebration of customs on
special days as well as lived faith in everyday simple rituals. The book
also documents various Hindu-Catholic syncretic practices that Goans engage
in and aim to explain how and why these came into existence. Passion in
Paradise represents the author's first steps in a journey through the
fascinating complexity that is Catholicism in contemporary Goa.

   3. Swiss daily reports about Portuguese tracks in Old Goa

*1. Letter of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs to IGSG regarding visa
facilitation*

After IGSG had sent a petition regarding visa facilitation (read the
petition* here http://www.igsg.org/Petition.htm*) to the Indian Ministers
of Home Affairs, External Affairs and Tourism a copy of the same was handed
over to the German Minister of Foreign Affairs in Berlin. In its answer to
IGSG the German Foreign Ministry informs that the matter regarding visa
facilitation is of the sole responsibility of the issuing country.
Nevertheless the Ministry has contacted the Indian Embassy in Berlin in
this matter. The embassy informed that a change in this visa rule (two
months' gap) is not foreseen, but that under special circumstances the two
months' gap can be surpassed. Please read the letter here:* *Letter of
Ministry of Foreign Affairs to

*2. Press review regarding the letter of a German citizen to CM Parrikar*

The letter of a German citizen to Chief-Minister Manohar Parrikar
complaining about the drug and noise situation in Anjuna and first turned
public by IGSG through internet (read the letter
*herehttp://www.igsg.org/de/Brief_Parricar_2012-05_en.htm
*)was widely referred to in the Indian and local press. We have chosen four
articles for you. The regional daily Herald comments on the fact that the
author does not refrain from giving names of those who act behind the gas
chamber. The national paper The Hindu and online agency IBNS transcribe
large parts of the letter, whereas the Indian news agency IANS refers to a
spokesman of IGSG who claims that drugs should not be the main attraction
for German tourists to Goa and explains that Germans felt uncomfortable
because of the garbage scattered everywhere. According to IANS the spokes
person also criticizes that Indian men from outside Goa harrass German
ladies on the beach. Please read the four articles

*3. The renowned Swiss daily Neue Zürcher Zeitung reports about Portuguese
tracks in Old Goa*

The renowned Swiss daily Neue Zürcher Zeitung in its section Travel has
published an article about Goa with the title Portugal in India. The
author Friedemann Bartu writes that Goa, besides being a travel
destination, reveals in the former capital Old Goa the tracks of Portugal.
Referring that the former capital had close to 300.000 inhabitants in 1565,
more than Lisbon and even more than London at that time, the article
summarizes the history of the peak and the decadence of Old Goa concluding
that in 1961 the 450 years of the colonial presence of Portugal in Goa
ended within 48 hours. Please read the full article (in German): Portugal

*4. German newspaper TAZ on Siemens Healthcare factory in Goa*

The German newspaper TAZ publishes an article about Siemens Healthcare, a
branch of Siemens, comparing activity and prices of Magnetic Resonance
Tomography (MRT) and the chance of providing such technology in India
through their own strategic Siemens Agenda 2013.

Through the process of Re-engineering Siemens now produces similar
scanners in Goa. Hemant Usgaonkar, director of Siemens Healthcare in Goa,
explains how the process works in the Siemens Goa factory: eliminating all

[Goanet] Letter of a German citizen to Chief Minister Parrikar

Dear reader,

here is some new information for you about our activities and some press
articles related to Goa and Germany.

These are the topics:

   1. Letter of a German citizen to Chief Minister Parrikar
   2. Obituary of German composer and pianist Hans-Udo Kreuels on Professor
   Noel Flores
   3. Meeting Multinational Cooperation in Goa
   4. Intensive German Classes at Verna

   8. German Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation analysis of election in Goa

*1. Letter of a German citizen to Chief Minister Parrikar citing
drug-rave-spots, names of heavy weights in Anjuna and problems with
Indian tourists*

A German citizen, frequent tourist visitor of Goa, has written a letter to
Mr Manohar Parrikar, new chief minister of Goa, referring several
disturbances in Anjuna and citing drug-rave-spots and names of local
heavy weights who cause nightly nightmares to local inhabitants and
peaceful tourists. Drug trafficking and drug-rave-parties give Anjuna Beach
the bad reputation as being the best drug spot at all in Goa - spread
worldwide in international travel magazines and via social networks. Goa is
called the paradise-turned-disastrous little state writes the author of
the letter.

Another aspect referred to in the letter is related to Indian tourists.
Tourist-Security-Force (seen only once in five months at Anjuna Beach) is
urgently required writes the author. Thousands of Indians walk up and down
the beaches, the males revealing to be mostly voyeurs. Indian male tourists
molesting single female tourists is the order of the day and night. To make
matters worse Indian male tourists prefer to shot pictures of naked little
foreign children with hidden camera. Foreign tourists got angry about this
quite often and once even forced the Indian tourists to delete the
pictures.

IGSG has received a copy of this letter. You can read the letter in English
here: Letter of a German citizen to Chief Minister
Parrikarhttp://www.igsg.org/de/Brief_Parricar_2012-05_en.htm

*LETTER of the German citizen Mr. H. Muster to the Indian Ambassador in
Berlin*

In his letter (in German) Mr. Muster focuses on three subjects. He
complains that it is difficult for tourists to obtain visas for India
especially for longer periods. He also says that many tourists would like
to come to India two or even three times a year, but that this is almost
impossible because of the two month's gap between visas.

The second subject of his letter are Goa's waste and waste water problems.
Mr. Muster compares the rich state of Goa to the clean and neat town of
Sirsi/Karnataka where roads are extremely well maintained and digs along
the roads drain the surface water - to the contrary of what he observes in
Goa. In the end Mr Muster complains about Goan taxis and tucktuck not
having meters and thus tourists being cheated.

Mr Muster ends his letter with the sentence: It is due to Goa that the very
positive image of India is turned to be a negative one.

Mr. Muster's letter is accompanied by articles on the matter from the Goan
press (in English)

*Goa** of former days is no longer:** dishonoured**, betrayed, sold out *

The leading national German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ)
reports about the situation in Goa 40 years after the beginning of the
Hippie Culture in Goa. Goa of that days is no longer, writes the FAZ, asking
who destroyed the paradise.

In the seventies life in Goa was easy, cheap and colourful: cosy and
warm-hearted amongst beautiful people.

But now the former garden of Eden of the hippies is burning, has
beendishonoured,
betrayed, sold out, says FAZ. Along the famous Goa beach you feel like being
at Ballermann (German denomination for an infamous entertainment mile in
Majorca, Spain, with very loud music, sex and alcohol) after an earthquake:
footpaths in the streets do not exist, only red dust.

Tens of thousands of Indians walk up and down, the groups of males
revealing to be mostly voyeurs, reports the German newspaper. Meanwhile
some Goans feel like strangers in their own land saying: People of Delhi
and Bombay come only to Goa to have more fun than they can have at their own
places.

New buildings full of flats are waiting for speculators from Delhi or

*'Filthy, expensive Goa no longer attracts German tourists'*

Panaji, Sat, Dec 4 05:07 PM *(IANS) *Goa is no longer a favoured tourist
destination for Germans because it is 'expensive and dirty', the Indo-German
Friendship Society Goa (IGFSG) said Saturday.

Speaking to reporters here at a press conference called to announce a
weeklong celebration to mark the arrival of the first German hippies to Goa
sixty years ago, IGFSG president Aurobindo Xavier said Goa's inability to
tackle the garbage disposal issue had affected Goa-bound tourist traffic
from Germany.

'A lot of the feedback that the society gets is that Germans no longer want
to come here because Goa cannot solve its garbage problem,' said Xavier, who
teaches at a university in Munich.

Garbage and other waste is disposed in the open in Goa, which has no garbage
processing plant. Strewn garbage and heaps of litter is an ugly, but common
site along the state's roads and near sites of tourist interest.

'A lot of German tourists, who have come to Goa in the past, say that it is
now time to bid Goa goodbye,' he added.

The earliest wave of tourism in Goa, which evolved with the coming of the
hippies in the 1960s, contained a majority of German tourists who in the
1970s were attracted by the pristine beauty of its beaches. British tourists
got the Goa-bug in the early eighties and after a couple of decades,
Russians outrank every other nationality when it comes to foreign tourist
numbers here.

The number of German tourists over the years have witnessed a steady
decline, according to Xavier. 'The garbage situation and the increase in the
number of Russian tourists has led to the decline of German tourists here.
Also, other beach destinations like Thailand are much cheaper than Goa,' he
said.

Goa in 2005 received nearly 15,000 German tourists, but the number has
shrunk considerably over the last five years, according to Xavier.

Goa received 2.4 million tourists annually, out of which nearly half a
million are foreigners.

*Germans say goodbye to Goa due to filth: Experts*

Panaji, Dec 4, (*PTI*) The filth on Goa beaches and expensive holidays have
made the state less preferred vacation gateway for the Germans, an expert
said.

The Germans who have arrived on their holiday in Goa recently have written
on our website that they are saying good bye to the state, Aurobindo A P G
Xavier, President, Indo-German Friendship Society, Goa, told PTI.

He said that the website run by the society (www.igsg. org) has been
receiving articles by German visitors who find the state as filthy.

Moreover, it's expensive destination. Tourists find Thailand cheaper than
Goa, so they have now changed their choice, Xavier, a Goan-based in
Germany, said.

Xavier is amongst the batch of Goans who were studying in Portugal when Goa
was liberated from Portuguese rule.

He later travelled to Germany to eke out living and has made the European

*German traveller takes route taken by hippies in 60s*

Sat, Dec 4 06:24 PM

Panaji, Dec 4 (PTI)

The road route taken by the hippies from Germany to reach Anjuna in Goa way
back in the 60s was revisited by a German traveller last week to mark the
four-decade of the community''s arrival in this beach haven. Niels Melves,
50, along with his wife and two children, arrived in Goa by Volkswagen (VW)
Bulli, a car-model that was hot-favourite with the hippies in those days.

Melves travelled for almost a month with his family before touching Goan
soil this week, Aurobindo A P G Xavier, President, Indo-German Friendship
Society, Goa, told PTI. The German traveller will lead the symbolic
motorcade drive from Panaji to Anjuna on December 8 as part of the 3rd
German Cultural Week planned in Goa. Hippies from European countries first
arrived here sometime in the mid-60s putting Goa on world tourism map.

They would take a tedious road route that went through countries like Iraq,
Iran and Pakistan before entering Indian territory and then to Goa. Xavier
said that Germans have had trade relations with Goa since 16th century and
they used to trade in horses, silk, spices and other goods.

Besides, the Germans were the ones to introduce printing machines in Goa or
for that matter in India, he said. Some Germans made Goa as their home after
three ships in which they were travelling sunk off Mormugao coast during
Second World War in 1944.

They settled here and got married to Goan women, Xavier said. Incidentally,
Germans account for the major chunk of tourists coming to Goa from European
countries.

*Motor rally for hippies in Goa*

India Blooms News Service

Panaji, Dec 4 (IBNS)

Indo-German Friendship Society (IGFS) Goa will be holding a rally along the
North Goa coastal stretch with V W Bulli – one of the forerunners of the
modern cargo and passenger van – to mark the arrival of Hippies in Goa.

Addressing a press conference to announce the 3rd Cultural Week beginning
from December 8, President Aurobindo Xavier said that the motor cart rally
will embark from Panaji to the beach town of Anjuna – where Hippies first
settled in mid-60s.

“The first German to start the Hippy culture in Goa was some 65 to 70 years
ago. To mark this occasion, a German native is traveling to Goa via land
route,” he said.

50-year-old Niels Melves along with his family will be arriving Goa after
crossing Iraq, Persia, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan in a Volkswagen Bulli
car via land route.

“Germans settlers in Goa will join the rally along with many other Goan
residents. We have invited German Consulate General in Mumbai to grace the
event, but the presence is uncertain as of now,” Xavier said replying to a
query on attendees at the rally.

The week-long event will have round table conference on environmental issues
in Goa, presentation on Indo-German friendship, guided visit to the factory
of the German Company Siemens in Goa and others.

IGFS was launched in Goa in 2006 to strengthen the friendship between
Germany and India, especially Goa.

*X-Ray devices produced by Siemens Goa are much cheaper and better for the
Indian market** than those made in Germany. Siemens getting smart*
The online edition of the German newspaper Die Welt explains the new
Siemens initiative baptized getting smart which consists in increasing its
production in other countries. The consequences of this new strategy for the
German market are shown.
Detailed examples are given in relation to India and China. One of them is a
report about the activity of radiologist Tanksale of Vasco da Gama, Goa and
the Siemens X-Ray device. Doctors like Tanksale are the future customers of
Siemens, writes the newspaper. The article quotes Hemant Usgaonkar, manager
of Siemens in Goa. Mr. Usgaonkar considers that the Siemens factory of
Verna, where the X-Ray devices are produced, is very important for Siemens.
In his opinion this Goan factory, with its 80 employees, is ready to
produce at least one new product yearly. Usgaonkar says that X-ray devices
imported from Germany are more expensive, and not better for the Indian
market than those produced in Goa.
