Inter-Religious Meet

An Inter-Religious Meet was organized by AICUF
and Youth Cell at St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa,
on the occasion of sadbhavana diwas. It was meant
to promote unity, integration, and harmony
amongst the people irrespective of caste and
creed. The programme commenced with a prayer
dance by Ms Chitra Kdam followed by a prayer by
Sr. Cleris D’Souza. Ms Jessica D’Souza, Ms.
Nikhat Khan and Mr Abhishek Pratap read and
reflected upon the passages from the Bible, the
Qur’an and the Bhagavad Gita on nature, humanity and love respectively.

The keynote speaker, Professor Suresh Amonkar
deliberated on the relevance of the prayer meet.
He started his speech with a prayer from the
Upanishads “Om Asato Maa Sad-Gamaya |Tamaso Maa
Jyotir-Gamaya |Mrtyor-Maa Amrtam Gamaya” which
means - Lead us from Unreality, to the Reality.
Lead us from the Darkness, to the Light. Lead us
from the Fear of Death to the Knowledge of
Immortality -. Professor Amonkar enlightened the
audience on the need of promoting good will and
understanding. He also reminded that the
scriptures of all the religions in the world
speak the same language of love, of truth, of
non-violence, of compassion and of humanity. He
said that the greed of humans is the cause of all
sorrows .The simple rule to be happy is to walk
the path of goodness in our acts, deeds and thoughts.

Ms Khuzaima Khattal, a student of SYBSc,
administered the Sadbhavana Diwas pledge. The
Principal Dr. (Fr.) Walter de Sa, in his address,
shed light on the importance of unity amongst the
people of all religions. He said that the key for
living in peace in this country is to create a
space for God in our lives and only then equality
and harmony will prevail in our country.

Coping With Stress

An In-Service Programme was conducted to the
members of non-teaching staff by the faculty of
COOJ led by Donna Noronha and Tanya D’Souza,
which was held on 06/09/2013 in the seminar hall
of St. Xavier’s College, on the theme “Coping with stress”.

The Principal, Fr. Walter de Sa welcomed the
participants and explained the relevance of this
programme particularly in the present
circumstances as working people find themselves
involved in situations they find it difficult to
face. He added that this programme would help
them not only at their place of work but more
importantly in their own families.

The resource persons asked each participant to
introduce himself/herself with actions, which was
repeated by others. They also sought to know what
it was exactly that was causing stress. Several
and diverse answers came forth from the
participants such as pressure of work, lack of
communication, no time, children’s misbehavior,
deadline to comply with, no time to relax, family issues, etc.

“In such a situation, what do you do?” They
asked. Some responded that they listen to music,
watch T.V., play games, visit friends, watch
movie, play with their children, and do breathing exercises.

Through a practical demonstration, they drove
home the message one has to learn out of a
critical situation. A participant was asked to
hold a glass filled with water for a while. They
asked him what he was feeling. He replied that
his hand was paining. Had he kept the glass in
his hand for a longer time, it would pain him
much more till such time that he would be no
longer capable of holding it, in which case then
the glass would just fall down and break. The
resource person applied this example to the
stress an individual faces. Therefore, the best
thing one can do is to keep the glass down, i.e.
to settle oneself. Remain rooted on the ground like a tree, they said.

If something or someone is bothering you,
communicate your concerns to your friend in whom
you have confidence. If you do not voice your
feelings, resentment will build up within you,
and the situation will worsen leading to
physical, mental and emotional disorders. Holding
stress in our mind and body affects adversely our
health. Therefore, one needs to express one’s
feelings instead of bottling them up.

They pointed out that people many a time resort
to unhealthy ways of coping with stress, such as,
smoking, excessive drinking, taking pills or
drugs, arrogant behavior, withdrawal from
friends, etc. These, they observed, may
temporarily reduce stress but in the long run, they cause greater damage.

They noted that the stress has a repercussion on
the body such as palpitations, dry mouth,
headaches, etc. They taught to the participants
some of the positive result yielding strategies,
like, concentrating on and stretching body
organs, deep breathing, listening to music,
playing with a pet, working in the garden,
watching a comedy, playing with a child or
finding an activity one enjoys, and feels the
stress melts away. If you regularly make time for
fun and relaxation, you will be in a better
position to handle life’s stress, they added.

They also advised to repeat these exercises that
would contribute to relaxation and feeling
lighter. The participants expressed their
feedback that the program was useful and
beneficial to them. It ended with a vote of
thanks to the resource persons from COOJ.

[Goanet] 1-Day Recollection for T.T. Members

2014-10-09 Thread ST. XAVIER'S COLLEGE OF ARTS, SCIENCE & COMMERCE-MAPUSA-GOA-INDIA-403507 (Tel:0832-2262356; WEB:www.xavierscollege-goa.com)

1-Day Recollection for T.T. Members

The members of the Teachers’ Teams (T.T.), Goa
Region, spent a day in prayer, and reflection on
the apostolic exhortation, “The Joy of the
Gospel”, of Pope Francis, on 6 October, 2014, in
the Chapel of Our Lady of Miracles, situated on the hillock of Curtorim Parish.

The reflection made the members aware of their
missionary responsibility and call to proclaim
joyfully the message of love and forgiveness in
order to bring about a transformation of personal
lives. “The Joy of the Gospel”, says Pope
Francis, “fills the hearts and lives of all who
encounter Jesus”. He admonishes us to rejoice,
and rejoice always lest we turn to be “Christians
whose lives seem like Lent without
Easter”. Further, Pope Francis motivates us to
reach out to others, seek those gone astray,
stand at the crossroads and welcome the outcast.

The T.T. members took part in the Eucharistic
Celebration based on the theme, “Go and do
likewise”, words of Jesus addressed to the
lawyer. To love others, particularly the
enemies, is the essence of Jesus’ message.

The members prayed the rosary and offered it for
the intentions of the Pope, mainly, for the
success of the extraordinary Synod of Bishops, currently taking place in Rome.

At the hillock the members experienced serenity
and tranquility of mind and heart, and thus, the
ambience led them to a greater relationship with
nature and God. The members thanked profusely
the Parish Priest, Fr. Mariano Goes e Proença and
his collaborators for the minute arrangements
towards the success of T.T. programme. May
everyone respond generously to the call of the Master.
