[Goanet] GOA CHITRA ORGANIZES A INTERNATIONAL NARRATIVE ART RESIDENCY

2014-02-12 Thread Victor Hugo Gomes
GOA CHITRA ORGANIZES A INTERNATIONAL NARRATIVE
ART RESIDENCY

TO PROMOTE GOAN CULTURE

Dear Members and friends of Goa Chitra,

Greetings from
Goa Chitra,

To bring back
the tradition of narrative art and to experiment different approaches to it
such as “art in series”, Goa Chitra ethnographic museum has conceived a 10-day
Narrative art residency project in Goa to supplement the Goa Chitra collections
and research through narrative depiction.

Narrative art tells a story of events taking place over time or
implies an association. A narrative, works within a single frame, with no clear
story line, and yet documents an event or era.

Eight women artists of repute from across the globe have voluntarily
come together to support and help sustain the thought process, the mission and
for the further growth of the ideals Goa Chitra stands for through this
narrative
art residency.

The residency will be held from 12th
Feb to 22nd Feb. 2014, out of which 8 days will be spent in remote
areas of Goa and the last 3 days at Goa Chitra museum where they will work, do
presentations, interact with media other fellow artists and general public. The
invited artists include Ms. Anna
Orbaczewska- Niedzielska (Poland), Ms. Ekterina Abramova (Russia, Ms. Birgitta
Volz (Germany), Ms. Mekhlla Harrison (Delhi, India), Ms. Anjum Chaturvedi
(Baroda, India), Loretti Joyce Pinto (Goa, India), Ms. Yolanda De Souza
Kammermeier (Goa, India) and
Ms. Nirupa Naik (Goa, India).

The artist
will travel with the curator of Goa Chitra Museum Mr. Victor Hugo Gomes, to
remote
villages of Goa where the origins of the implements on display at Goa Chitra
were collected. They will have the opportunity to experience firsthand the
rural life in Goa and interact with the natives of Goa and make a connection
with the lives of those that once lived and worked with them, creating visuals
that narrate a story from an artist’s perspective by women artists.

The invited artists will stay in different remote parts of south Goa with
Mr.Gomes and create Illustrative and narrative expression through paintings and
drawings using the museum's immense collection of cultural and ethnographic
display
and site-specific projects that interpret and contribute to the awareness of
the environmental challenges battling mankind in today's era.

The works
created for the workshop will be exhibited for public during the opening of
“The Dom Martin Art Gallery” at Goa
Chitra at the end of the residency. To signify the relevance of this narrative
art residency, the exhibition will be thrown open to the public on
“International Women's Day” on 8th
March, 2014 till 22nd march 2014.

Thank you for
all the interest and support shown in Goa Chitra and its activities. Kindly

As part of our
initiatives to raise funds and supplement ongoing research, development and to
further the vision of the Goa Chitra Ethnographic Museum, we had conceived a
10-day Narrative art residency project in Goa from 12th Feb to 22nd
Feb 2014. Eight women artists from
across the globe came together for a 10-day Narrative art residency in Goa. This
was conceptualized to also bring back the tradition of narrative art and
experiment different approaches to it such as “art in series”.

The theme of the
first edition of this residency is titled “Womanhood”. The theme recognizes the
fact that woman has been a true and constant source of inspiration and
celebrates this spirit, to coincide with the International Women's Day 2014,
which is celebrated on March 8 every year.

Through art and
narratives by the women and for the women we celebrate the pivotal role they
play in every facet of human existence. Her inspiration has paved the pathway
where history is created, where the past moves to a greater future, where life
itself exists and where creativity flows through narratives.

The artist travelled
with the curator of Goa Chitra Museum, to remote villages of Goa where the
origins of the implements on display at Goa Chitra were collected, so as to
connect with the lives of those that once lived and worked with them, creating
visuals that narrate a story. They had the opportunity to experience firsthand
the rural life in Goa and interact with the natives of Goa.

After which the
invited Artists created Illustrative and narrative expression through two
paintings and one drawing using the museum's immense collection of cultural and
ethnographic display and site-specific projects that interpret and contribute
to the awareness of the environmental challenges battling mankind in today's
era.

The 10 day residency

[Goanet] Goan Quest-II on Sun. 9th Nov. 2014 at Goa Chitra

2014-11-05 Thread Victor Hugo Gomes
Dear Members and friends of Goa Chitra,
On the eve of celebrating its 5th anniversary, Goa Chitra launched, Goan Quest
2014-15 on 2nd Nov. 2014, to showcase to
its visitors the fast fading Tangible and Intangible Heritage of Goa. This
event will be held every Sunday at Goa Chitra, through the season and shall
commence from 5:00pm onwards until 10:00pm. The Goan Quest series is supported
by the directorate of Art and Culture, Government of Goa.

Intangible Cultural
Heritage: represents the practices, representations,
expressions, knowledge, skills – as well as the instruments, objects, artifacts
and cultural spaces associated therewith. Goa because of its ancient culture
and the European acculturation influence is rich in this intangible cultural
heritage distinctive only to this part of the Indian Continent and all efforts
are needed to preserve and showcase these special traditions.

The
curator of the museum Mr. Victor Hugo Gomes believes that by preserving and
promoting these facets of Goan identity and promoting tourism on these lines a
symbiosis can be created whereby Goan
culture is sustained rather than endangered by tourism.

With
the backing of a strong research and development model, the Goan Quest
conceptualized by Mr. Gomes, is a different model of engaging tourists with the
heritage of this land without diluting the traditions and losing the identity
of our ancestral past.

The
first Goan Quest held on Sunday, 2nd
Nov. 2014, was well received by the Tourism stakeholders and was attended by
interested tour companies and hotel representatives who are keen in promoting
the
unsung aspects of Goa's appeal; its traditions, rituals, oral expressions,
distinctive
cuisine, music, dance, costumes, and trades of the ethnic communities.

After
a welcome drink the guests were given colourful folk props and welcomed by a
brass band. This was followed by a colourful Shigmo parade through the Goa
Chitra
property. Along the way the Guest could watch and participate in different live
demonstrations of cane weaving, pottery, mat weaving etc and had the
opportunity to interact with various artisans of Goa. Different folk dance
performances and serenade’ s entertained them as they were taken on a guided
tour of the Goa Chitra ethnographic museum and the newly opened Goa Chakra
transportation museum. This was followed by snacks and a eleven course
authentic Goan buffet as they watched different folk dances from different
communities. The evening ended admits fun and dancing to the tune of popular
Goan music by solo artists and a live band.

“By
promoting traditional communities who are the true ambassadors of our culture
Goan
identity is kept alive rather than be destroyed or diluted” states Mr. Gomes

The objective of the Goan Quest-2014-15 is to
revive and showcase traditional arts, crafts and folk forms for the benefit of
visitors by involving the community members and will be held every Sunday

Coming Sunday, 9th November 2014,

Carl D'Silva: Is widely acknowledged as India’s leading
Wildlife artist. His many sojourns across the country accompanying wildlife
ecologists
on the field studies has allowed him to
hone his skills through technically demanding renditions of wildlife in its
natural environment.

This period also brought his first taste for
international recognition when he became the first and as yet only Indian to
have his paintings selected for the exhibition by the UK based premiere
Wildlife Art (consortium), the Society of wildlife Artists at their annual
juried show in London’s Mall Galleries from 1987-1991. Several of these
paintings
were bought by an appreciative European audience.

With more than three decades of experience, Carl does both genres of
Wildlife Art; Clinical textbook illustrations and gallery artwork in most
mediums. Carl also does taxidermy,
sculptures and decoys for wildlife research.

Since 1989, Carl’s talent in Illustrating Field guides
on birds has been in great demand in Europe and in India. Beginning with a
completely new set of 64 colour plates depicting 538 species of revised edition
of Salim Ali’s “The Book of Indian Birds”, his talent has been used to
illustrate a British sponsored field-guide to “Birds of the Indian
Subcontinent” which led to “Birds of Bhutan”, “Birds of Nepal”, “Birds of North
India” and “Birds of South India”.

 He has also
been a major contributor to specialised monographs like “Parrots of the World”
and “Pheasants, Partridges & Grouse of the World”. “Birds of East Asia”,
his latest major work, was published in 2009.

Carl’s forte is the accurate and real-life richness of
detail that he brings to his bird plates and canvasses. His global exposure to
the intensely critical community of wildlife artists and authors, has in a
short span of time catapulted him to a position where is one of the most sought
after artists for high quality illustrations that have come to be expected of
field guides. “Birds of Mumbai”, (IBH 2003) is a best seller. Painting on a big
canvas enables him to use the brush effetely as an extension of his
field-trained eye. His work is currently exhibited in several collections in
India and abroad.
The exhibition shall
be inaugurated with a
prelude of lectures by Goa’s finest birders and chief guest for the occasion,
Adv Radharao Gracias and Pankaj Lad.

This exhibition cum sale will be opened for public viewing
until the 15th of December at the Dom martin Art gallery , Goa
Chitra museum, Benaulim.
The Starry Starry Night: Paying tribute to the acoustic guitar, ACOUSTRIX - a
Mumbai based group of
four dedicated and experienced musicians will take you on a trip back in time
and make you experience firsthand the nostalgic kaleidoscope of ambiance,
guitars and songs by legendary acoustic guitar kings like: The Everly Brothers,

Clearwater Revival (CCR), James Taylor, John Denver, Cliff Richard and The
