[Goanet] Attacks on Christians in Karnataka

Santosh Helekar:
The real question that all sensible and rational Goanetters need to ask is
the following:
What credible information and whose credibility assures us that the larger
picture is not based on overzealous generalizations from typographical
errors, and exaggerated and fraudulent figures?

Response:
The real question that all sensible and rational Goanetters need to ask is

Anil Desai:
I believe strongly that the only way these attacks will stop overnight is
when the BJP government in Karnataka is replaced by secular Congress
government. The proof which Marshall will supply very easily is in the fact
that Marshall does not write on violence in Orissa any more. Goanetters
might not know this but this can be credited entirely to the fall of the BJP
government at the last election.

Response:
I could not agree with Anil Desai more. Karnataka has changed for the worse
with the advent of the BJP. Things can only but improve if the BJP is voted
out. Orissa is far more peaceful today than it was when the BJP was a
coalition partner, though it still has to return to normalcy. When there are
no more acts of violence against Christians in Orissa and nothing is
reported in the media, there is nothing on this count to disseminate, unless
of couse Anil Desai as a sangh parivar sympathiser has some inside
information of their activities which is unknown to us. Goanetters need to
be cautioned against all this backdoor activity to bring the BJP in Goa
back. The Goa Suraj Party is a better option.

Marshall

It sure looks like my question hit its mark. As Jose correctly implied, how can
one trust someone who posts information that he knows contains typographical
errors, and allows Goanetters to be misled by that erroneous information?

For credible information regarding the vandalism in Karnataka, please consult
the following website of the Somasekhara Commission of inquiry:

[2] Marshall Mendonza responded thus:

The real question that all sensible and rational Goanetters need to
ask is the following: What is the credibility of the above poster?

RESPONSE:

I cannot respond on behalf of all sensible and rational Goanetters. I
can only respond on behalf of myself.

I would hope that all sensible and rational Goanetters would look at
individuals and individuals posts and ask the following questions:

a: Does Santosh Helekar exaggerate or massage the truth? or

b: While certainly not infallible, does he attempt to justify his
statements with verifiable facts? or

c: Does he just spread stuff - that too inflammatory stuff - without
bothering to check out the details?

d: Would he not place a comment questioning the 50 crores bit - IF he
had read it - OR would he just disregard it in the interests of the
larger picture?

To be quite clear I will state this:

1: As a practising Roman Catholic, I am disgusted by the attacks (by
anyone) on others. This includes attacks - by the self appointed
saffron police - on the non-interfering youngsters enjoying
Valentine's Day ...or just holding hands in public.

2: As a practising Roman Catholic, I am disgusted by chaps and
chappies with Christian names who are attempting to whip-up anti-Hindu
frenzy based on exaggerated claims. These are the guys who will
drive the BJP into the hands of the extremists.

3: As a practising Roman Catholic, I am losing my trust in the
reported statements of Justice Saldanha.

4: As of now .until he corrects or provides proof for that
statement, Justice Saldanha is NO practising Roman Catholic as far as
I am concerned.

5: As far as the credibility of Santosh Helekar is concerned, only a
communal ignoramus will query it.

I dont usually care for Dr. Barad's observations, but this time round, I
think he asks an interesting and valid question

just because the fight is 'the good fight' should not allow us to slip up

Marshall Mendonza posted a letter by Justice Saldanha. In the letter, the
Justice writes: The Central Government and the International Organizations
have taken careful note of the fact that the State Govt. spends an average
of Rs.50 Crores a day on self publicity in order to ensure that grave
incidents of the present type are not reported.

Just curious to know exactly who the International Organizations are, and
are they monitoring any other aspect of happenings (other than attacks on
 Christians) in India.

Secondly, Rs 50 crores a day is really a huge amount, comes to Rs 18,250
crores a year. I do not know if the total advertisements in all the
newspapers in Karnataka would amount to this sum. I, therefore, wonder
about the credibility of Justice Saldanha's claim as far as this is
 concerned.

 Really like to be enlightened.

 Best regards,

 U. G. Barad

RESPONSE:

Jason, Well Stated.

In this matter, I too wholeheartedly support Dr Barad.

I am not yet ready to slam Justice Saldanha.

I want to hear directly from Justice Saldanha - (a) IF he wrote that
letter (b) IF he bid ...on what basis he wrote that letter.

[Goanet] Attacks on Christians in Karnataka

2010-09-02 Thread Marshall Mendonza
Justice Saldanha Records 1000 Attacks in 2 Years. He Calls for Restoration
of Rule of Law

The Hon’ble Mr. V.S. Acharya,
Home Minister of Karnataka,

On 26th January 2010, I undertook the painful duty of recording that during
the short tenure of under two years of the BJP Government in this State,
that 500 attacks on the Christian community had taken place. The State
Government is acting in total violation of the Constitutional Mandate which
guarantees freedom to practice and propagate one’s religion and this hate
campaign has official sanction. There are organizations and institutions in
this country which are maintaining a careful record of the increase in the
number of these attacks in the State of Karnataka, as also of the fact that
those involved in them are rarely arrested and even if arrested, the cases
are clandestinely withdrawn. The victims are always wrongly arrested and
your Government refuses to withdraw those cases and to crown it all, you
have officially gone on record stating that all the attackers involved in
such serious offences under the IPC are political activists according to
you. This is a total aberration.

August 15, 2010 brought the number of such attacks to exactly 1000, an
increase of 500 in the last six months. The most sensational one came from
your Party MLA – Prahlad Remani who is supposed to be the BJP MLA from
Khanapur in Belgaum District. The attack was made by him in the course of
his official address at the flag hoisting on Independence Day. I was in
Pune attending a Conference on that day and the TV channels have shown his
speech live. Among other statements, he has attacked the Christian
community by stating that the British had sown the seeds of Christianity in
this country (the man requires to be re-educated because this is factually
false) and that Christianity and Christians have to be weeded out and thrown
out of this country. This is a serious offence of inciting communal
disharmony along with several other allied offences because it immediately
provoked violence and tension in the whole District. The State, in such
situations is required to register an offence and immediately proceed
according to Law. This was not done.

What is most atrocious is that when several complaints were lodged with the
Police Authorities and an FIR was registered that instead of upholding the
Law, the State Government immediately transferred the SP who had very
rightly taken action. This was done by the Chief Minister and the Home
Minister. This shows that the Statements made by the MLA are officially
supported by the State Government and that the subversion of the Law and the
legal process has also come from the Vidhana Soudha. The citizens of this
State are protected by the Constitution of this country and therefore,
demand from the State Government that action according to Law must follow.

In the course of the last two years, there have been a whole series of cases
where the State Government has incited, supported and shielded such communal
attacks. The record also shows that the Law has been misused not only
against the victims but against the Media whenever such cases have been
highlighted and the International Human Rights Commission and the Press
Council of India have taken serious note of this. The Central Government and
the International Organizations have taken careful note of the fact that the
State Govt. spends an average of Rs.50 Crores a day on self publicity in
order to ensure that grave incidents of the present type are not reported.
All these incidents are representative of a total breakdown of the Rule of
Law in this State, it is a matter of deep regret that they have taken place
even on a sacred day like August 15th and we demand that the Rule of Law be
restored.

JUSTICE MICHAEL F. SALDANHA
