Re: [Goanet] Garbage Talk

Very commendable, I should say.

Similar this side of town, when I clean up mine and neighbouring nature strips,
and there is a retired old gent in the neighbourhood who actually mows nature
strips that have overgrown lawns for nothing, in our street. Now that's
community spirit at work for you.

Unfortunately, we cannot do much for the road hoons who like to decorate the
street with burnouts now and then, though at least one car was impounded by the
police as we have a resident police officer in our street.

PS for those who don't know what I'm talking about, a nature strip is a tiny
strip of land that has a lawn on it and sits between the sidewalk and the road,
and usually has one or two trees on it in front of every house. It actually
belongs to the municipality, but every owner is expected to take care of it and
keep it trim and tidy. It is not rare that some irresponsible dog-owners allow
their dogs to use it as a toilet - we have managed to keep dogs and cats off
ours by sprinkling it with chilly powder roughly once a month :-)

Subject: [Goanet] Garbage Talk

 On the following morning I
would put on my garbage gloves, pick up the bottles or cans and put
them in a garbage bag. I did this on a few Sundays. People soon
started doing the same and soon after that they probably warned their
guests about it. I have had no occasion to clear anything for years
now. The place is spotless again.

[Goanet] Garbage Talk

2009-06-18 Thread Roland Francis
In a Toronto subway train I once saw a public service ad that advised
people to remove the first piece of litter that is thrown on the
train. If you don't, then expect a dirty car.

I experienced the soundness of this advice for myself.

My house is located on a neat and spotless cul-de-sac, in the center
of which is a large round island of turf on which is a tall
street-light standard. We the residents use this to have summer BBQs
for the neighborhood. Many cars can park around it due to it's large
diameter. On Saturday nights when one of the houses has a party crowd,
visitors will sit in their cars after the party, talk and throw a
couple of beer or coke cans on the island.

Don't less that first piece lie undisturbed. People will add to it and
before you know it, a dump arises where there was none before.

Regards,
