Most of the boutique hotels in Goa, are old houses
that were bought and refurbished by Indians not
from Goa. Some enterpreneurs like Sheela Dhody(Case
Britona, Casa Baga, etc) are rumoured to have at
least 20 similar properties. Non-goan Indians are
at the forefront of this great initiative that
preserves our architectural heritage and makes
loads of money at the same time. Rest assured that
there are more old Goan houses serving as hotels
than there are havelis in Jaipur.

Did someone on this forum recently opine that
non-Goans were ruining Goa? Seems like they are at
the forefront of a) appreciating and b) preserving
what is best about Goa - the unique confluence of east
and west.

Saying that non-Goans are ruining Goa is like saying
that immigrants ruined America, Canada, Australia and
New Zealand:-))

Dear Alick,

I do agree with everyone regarding loss of heritage homes to builders. Many
heritage house owners are reluctant to let our rooms for bed/breakfast. My
maternal aunt Maria de Lourdes Figueiredo de Albquerque has converted half
of her ancestral home in Loutulim into a heritage boutique hotel.

I have extensively stayed in havelis all over India, especially Gujarat,
Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh where people have resotred their homes into
small hotels and they are absolutely wonderful..

I wish people in Goa would do the same.

Its Fernanda Peres e Colaco who sold her ancestral house In Sao Pedro to
Varun Sood and he has restored it. I have been there for a couple of
events. He has done a good job but not as tastefully restored as Siolim
House. That is beautifully restored and is also a boutique hotel.

The only reason I can think is most Goans do not for some reason or the
other want to return to Goa. That is why we have a lot of foreigners and
other Indians buying our heritage homes. But, I must confess they have done
an excellant job in restoration.

I'm not sure whether this is correct or not. But, I was told that 24
foreigners have bought houses in Saligao and restored them. Personally, I
know four of them.

Hi Sunith,
I am aware of the fact that the Peres ladies did not restore the house but
it must have been no mean feat to keep it going. I should rephrase my
previous post to say that unlike many of their relatives I am glad that they
had the finesse to not raze it to the ground to make way one another
concrete monstrosity and to satiate the greed of our builders. I am also
glad that Varun Sood and many others are preserving our beautiful heritage
for future generations.
Regards
Helga
