Hi Gabe, Actually about 11 years ago. I had to go there quite regularly on office work. I hated, hated the place. Even if filled to the brim with buildings, it is still souless. To an artist like M F Hussain, who has drawn his inspiration from the colours and culture of India for 90 odd years, it must be worse than prison to be now in a state that is so colourless, devoid of an artistic heritage and crippling in its freedom of expression. It must be a state worse than death to be honest. In fact, we Indians must start a petition to have Hussain back. I'd like to add that the fight over Hussain is really not about art, it is something much more basic than that for Indian minorities like myself. It's about just how much of a citizen of India am I and is my freedom based on the merit or demerits of my religion in India? Why are minorities lesser people in India? This is the actual battle. Warm regards, Selma

Dear Santosh, Yes, I agree with what you have written. I used the word counter-propaganda inappropriatedly. I meant they need to be countered. Best, selma

One general slogan is there if character is lost everything is lost I have met M F Hussain in person in 90's at least twice. I feel he has given Neutron Bomb to insult Hinduism. He is in association with 'D' company and enjoying the fruits in his new found land 'Kuwait'. Similar stories regarding Sanjay Dutt. As a young boy he was playing with AK47. Bad part is our Judiciary accepts it. There are many such issues... including Churchil Alemao etc. Our Secular sympathizer will go hell bend to protect them... So let's at least get our geography right, if we can't get our historical heritage quite right. I've been to Qatar. One desolate, God forsaken corner of the earth; lonely, spartan Arabesque buildings rising out of salt-flats. No human on earth would take its citizenship unless it is a sort of self-imposed incarceration akin to being exiled to Siberia. That is what we Indians have sentenced Hussain to, our most eminent artist, to live in Qatar. He could have taken the citizenship of any other country. I'm quite sure a heaving Dubai would have offered it to him, but I have little doubt that at 91, all this man wants is peace and escape from the world. There is a brilliant line in Amitav Ghosh's novel the Glass Palace when the king of Burma is exiled by the British to live in Ratnagiri, India. He took his hour-glass with him and there he knew he would be buried watching its sand shift. I hope that in some way pleases you. Best, Selma

Still, in some cultures, it has neutral or even positive connotations. In the 20th century, it took on negative meanings particularly in the West, because of the campaigns (propaganda) by ideologies seen as hostile to Western liberal capitalism. Some groups have described themselves with the P label: don't forget Congregatio de Propaganda Fide! US and the UK in World War II and the Cold War suggest that it's an activity not only restricted to both extremes of the political spectrum. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda

For some time now I've been saying that right-wing ideology is not confirmed to a few, isolated groups in India, who can be dismissed by election results which elect in a Congress government. The fact is that the ordinary Hindu walking the streets, not prone to any violence, not a member of any radical group can be a right-wing ideologue, embracing this idea of nationalism or at the very least sympathetic to the cause. There is now at least an acknowledgement that this phenomena exists and that it has found a voice on the Internet. This in itself is not cause for concern. The Internet Hindu has a counterpart elsewhere; the talk show radio American and the tabloid Brit. If one listens to talk show America, which is the domain of Republican ideologues, one is immediately inclined to think that America is a rabidly racist country, whose idea of nationhood does not extend beyond blue-eyed and blond Americans. A similar trend of thought is echoed in Britain by tabloid newspapers who epitomise the mindset of a closed, insular society. These domains have quite a few features in common; they create a fear of outsiders, of anyone different, they claim to represent the nationalist point of view and they are drawn from what is traditionally the bulk of that homogenised group. It is disconcerting that the rise of this group in India, hails from the educated, middle-class section of society. This aspect is troubling and anomalous. These groups, as strong as they are in every society, find their bette-noire in the mainstream press and in the flood of liberal intellectuals that society generates. They are never eliminated, the only counter is to have their power neutered by counter-propaganda. The challenge for India is only this; that it must constantly be in the business of creating liberal intellectuals. That it must never muzzle the freedom to think and express. That it must invest heavily in an education with an emphasis on the liberal arts. Only by creating intellectual capital can there be coherence in our society. Best, Selma
