[Goanet] OffTopic: Canada - At grocery stores, things are different, very different

2020-04-05 Thread AF P
https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2020/04/04/at-grocery-stores-things-are-different-very-different.html?li_source=LI_medium=star_web_ymbii

Article includes prices...

Also In Canada:
-- Stores close 2-hours early so stock can be filled without customers
in the store, before it happened mostly continuously through out the
day
-- Line-ups happen outside the store in a marked parking lot...lots
of space, but a pain of it rains
-- Some store are moving to no cash handling
-- Some store have erected plexiglass shield for cashiers
-- All the self check-outs are open, fewer cashiers
-- Lots of surface cleaning going on in stores
-- Some sections are closed, ie grab-and-go, nobody in offices, so no
one is grabbing on the run, fresh desserts bakery, deli counter that
provided sliced preserved meat and cheese, custom sandwiches, soups,
closed, etc. No eating at store cafe tables...take out only
-- Most people are wearing masks and gloves (most Canadians are
prepared as they regularly carry thin cotton or wool winter gloves in
the fall, winter, and spring )
-- Seniors, mothers, and people with disabilities are not asked to
wait, but immediately asked to head to the door
-- Many shops, at least last week, provided extra thin plastic gloves
for people picking up produce and meat
-- Lots of comfort food moving, waffles, ice-cream, frozen pizza, cookies
-- Lots of ingredients are moving, flour, rice, milk. Indians are
making milk sweets at home

Generally grocery items are going faster than before because far more
people are eating 3-4 meals at home ie no coffee shops, work lunches,
fast food, or school cafeteria, etc

After the first two weeks, I did not see much big shopping going on.
Most people were getting the basics and a few comfort items and moving
on... I would say many of the luxury items and discretionary items
were being left behind. A sign that there is a drop in wages coming
in...

All local buses are temporary free in my area due to the emergency, so
may people are walking for added exercise and if it looks empty taking
the bus back.

Most people have access cars, and designate one person to do the
shopping. On my street I notice many seniors living independently are
having friend or family drop the shopping on the porch. Many shoppers
are doing WhatsApp and FaceTime while in the store, so you realize
they are purchasing for someone else...

Tough times? No

Canada shuts Parliament, Trudeau in quarantine, no travel
By ROB GILLIEStoday

TORONTO (AP) — Canada shut down Parliament and advised against all
nonessential travel outside the country Friday while Prime Minister Justin
Trudeau governed remotely from his home, in self-imposed quarantine after
his wife tested positive for the new coronavirus.

Dr. Theresa Tam, the chief public health officer, also advised more social
distancing, no handshakes and kisses, while the Canadian government advised
cancelling large events like concerts and Transport Minister Marc Garneau
said cruise ships with more than 500 people will not be able to dock in
Canada until July 1.

Overseas flights returning to Canada will also be restricted to a small
number of airports.

Canada’s House of Commons voted to shut down for at least five weeks to
help ensure lawmakers do not contribute to the spread of the virus.

The moves came a day after Trudeau’s wife tested positive. The prime
minister himself has been in self-imposed quarantine.

“I will remain in self isolation for 14 days. I want to be clear. I have no
symptoms and I feel very well,” Trudeau said at a news conference outside
his residence in Ottawa.

“Technology allows me to work from home.”

All parties in Parliament agreed to the suspension, which means lawmakers
will miss two weeks of sessions since they had previously planned to be
away next week and two weeks in April. The House is scheduled to next meet
on Monday, April 20.

“This just shows you how seriously our government and members of the house
are taking this,” Government House leader Pablo Rodriguez said.

Part of the deal for closing Parliament for five weeks was ratifying the
new replacement for the North American Free Trade Agreement. Rodriguez said
lawmakers have passed legislation to ratify the U.S.-Mexico-Canada
Agreement, and the Senate was expected to follow suit later Friday.

The suspension of the House of Commons means the federal budget won’t be
presented March 30 as Finance Minister Bill Morneau had promised, but would
come at a later date.

Trudeau was quarantining himself at home because his wife, Sophie Grégoire
Trudeau, tested positive for the new coronavirus after returning from
Britain. He said Friday his wife has mild flu-like symptoms but is doing
fine. He said neither he nor their three children are showing symptoms.

Trudeau said significant stimulus will be announced soon.

“I know that you are worried,” Trudeau said.

“Nobody should have to worry about paying rent, buying groceries.”

Trudeau was spending the day in briefings, phone calls and virtual meetings
from home, including speaking with other world leaders and joining a
special Cabinet committee discussion on the coronavirus. Trudeau spoke with
U.S. President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on
Thursday.

He said his kids are also in self isolation and have been playing with
LEGOs. He said his wife has been talking to family and friends on the phone.

Trudeau himself had not been tested because he was not showing symptoms,
his office said. The doctor’s advice to the prime minister is to continue
daily activities while self-monitoring.

Canada’s central bank also announced it is cutting its overnight rate
target by half a percentage point to 0.75 per cent in response to the
pandemic. The bank already cut by half a point on March 4 due to the virus.

Canadian Finance Minister Bill Morneau said a $10 billion Canadian (US $7.1
billion) credit facility program will also be available to business and
significant stimulus package is coming.

“We are going to do whatever it takes to protect Canadians and keep our
economy strong,” Morneau said.

They’re immigrants to Canada. So why are they supporting far-right
parties that want to reduce immigration?

By Omar MoslehStar Edmonton andMelanie GreenStar Vancouver

https://www.thestar.com/edmonton/2019/10/27/theyre-immigrants-to-canada-so-why-are-they-supporting-populist-parties-that-want-to-reduce-immigration.html

Photo: Kulbir Singh Chawla greets fellow protesters during the United We
Roll convoy at Parliament Hill in February. After moving to Canada from
India, Chawla experienced what he calls a political awakening. He now
calls himself a Canadian nationalist and attends yellow vest rallies,
where he wears a matching yellow turban.

Edmonton

Kulbir Singh Chawla really doesn’t like when he’s connected with a
customer service representative with a foreign accent.

This, despite having a accent himself.

“Here in Canada, I would say don’t even employ Kulbir,” Chawla said of
customer service jobs.

“Because I still don’t have that Canadian way of (speaking) fully.”

The most recent federal election saw a small but distinct cadre of
people of colour and immigrants such as Chawla supporting and in some
cases even running for far-right populist parties such as the People’s
Party of Canada, the National Citizens Alliance and the Canadian
Nationalist Party.

All of these parties wanted to reduce immigration and scrap Canada’s
official multiculturalism policy.

Despite being an immigrant himself, Chawla says he supports these policies.

Chawla, an industrial engineer, came to Canada from India with his wife
and daughter in 1999. He currently lives in Nova Scotia and calls
himself a Canadian nationalist. When he first moved here, he considered
himself left-leaning, but over the past two decades, he’s experienced
what he calls a political awakening.

It led to him attending yellow vest rallies at the movement’s peak,
where he would wear a matching yellow turban. And people would call him
racist.

“The left media would say this is a racist movement. And there I am with
my turban. And it just breaks their narrative,” he said.

He was first drawn toward the Conservatives, then toward far-right,
fringe parties such as the National Citizens Alliance, which in addition
to advocating for lower taxes and the abolishment of the Bank of Canada
Act, wants to reduce immigration levels to about 50,000 a year. Chawla
previously ran for the National Advancement Party of Canada, the NCA’s
predecessor, in Calgary Midnapore in a 2017 byelection.

He says some reasons his political stance shifted are political
correctness and liberal “indoctrination” about issues such as white
supremacy and racial profiling (the former he says doesn’t exist, the
latter he believes is valid in some cases).

Kulbir Singh Chawla takes part in a yellow vest rally.

“It started with the yellow vest movement … It’s come up as a big, I
will say wake-up movement for Canada and Canadians. It brought them
together as well. So there’s a great deal of populism and nationalism
going on,” Chawla said.

He compares nationalism to working for a corporation; the ultimate goal
should be the betterment of the company, rather than advancing one’s own
personal fortune. The same goes for living in a confederation.

It’s where his deep distaste for call centres that employ people with
accents stems from. He said he believes it hurts Canada both
economically and in terms of its national identity.

In particular, he is opposed to customer service being outsourced to
other countries, for economic reasons — it takes jobs out of Canada and
hurts the country’s GDP. It inspired him to create a Change.org petition
urging the government and corporations to “Create call centres in Canada!”

But he acknowledges there’s an important cultural component as well.

“When I come here, if I found my own type of people speaking on the call
… then it’s no different from being in India,” he said.

“We immigrants came to Canada for a whole different outlook on life. And
we find it’s all changing, back to the same old Punjabi style.”

For parties such as the People’s Party of Canada that were accused of
harbouring racist candidates and policies, there’s an obvious benefit to
having candidates and supporters of colour, says Akaash Maharaj, a
former senior resident at Massey College and CEO of the Mosaic
Institute, an organization that helps bring together immigrants who have
come to Canada from countries affected by conflict.

“There has been an effort by extreme right parties to try and play a
game of blackface and brownface to inoculate themselves against
accusations of racism by demonstrating that they have at least one or
more members of their parties or candidates who are not white,” Maharaj
said.

But the allure of anti-immigration policies for immigrants themselves is
more complex.

“On the face of it, it looks absurd and I think it is absurd ... I
wouldn’t say it’s widespread,” Maharaj said.

Pope Francis Makes History by Becoming the First Pontiff to Write Code

As well as writing code, the pope held video conferences with young
people from around the world at the ‘Programme for Peace’ project launch
last week.

by Ross Kelly, Junior Staff Writer @rossk_1992
https://digit.fyi/pope-francis-writes-code/

Computer history was made last week when Pope Francis helped write a
line of code for a United Nations development app.

At an event organised by the Scholas Occurrentes foundation in Vatican
City, the pontiff joined three young women to write the code. As well as
becoming the first pope to code, he called on students around the world
to learn computer science for world peace.

The event marked the launched of the ‘Programming for Peace’ project,
which aims to introduce students from disadvantaged communities to
computer science and to help use their tech talent for “ethical” purposes.

The three young women, Matilde Fabrega Vivanco from Chile; Nicole
Rodriguez from New York; and Liuren Yin from China, are learning
computer science in school. Vivanco helped the pontiff in adding the
last line of code to the app.

The app the trio wrote aims to show how technology can be used to
advance the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

The goals are the UN’s blueprint to “achieve a better and more
sustainable future for all” – which address global challenges such as
poverty, inequality, climate and justice. A key focus of the scheme is
to improve education and innovation around the world.

A commemorative plaque shown on the app screen was blessed by Pope
Francis, which read: “Computer science empowers young people to create
peace in their communities. Everyone should learn how to harness
technology, to use their creative power for peace.”

As well as writing code, the pontiff held video conferences with young
people from around the world and spoke to children who had participated
in a number of technology programmes promoted by Scholas.

Hadi Partovi, co-founder of Code.org, was present at the launch of the
Programming for Peace project, live-tweeting the events as they unfolded.

During the event, Partovi commented: “In the 21st century, computer
science is a fundamental subject that all students should learn. Schools
should teach computer science to prepare students for the future,
empower children with creativity and teach how to harness technology and
creativity.”

NASA head says first person on Mars is 'likely to be a woman'

By Christina Maxouris, CNN
Tue March 12, 2019
https://www.cnn.com/2019/03/12/us/nasa-woman-on-mars-trnd/index.html

Forget everything you've learned about men and Mars. Chances are the
first person to land on the red planet will be a woman, the head of NASA
said recently.

Jim Bridenstine was a guest on the science and technology radio show
"Science Friday," when he teased that a woman is "likely to be" the
first person on Mars. The NASA administrator did not identify a specific
person, but said women are at the forefront of the agency's upcoming plans.

Bridenstine responded "absolutely" to a question from a Twitter user who
asked whether women will be included in the agency's next trip to the
moon. In fact, he said the next person on the moon is also likely to be
a woman. "These are great days," he said.

NASA will also have its first all-female spacewalk at the end of the
month, when astronauts Anne McClain and Christina Koch will get to float
around in space. The spacewalk will last about seven hours, according to
the NASA website.

Both McClain and Koch were part of the 2013 astronaut class, half of
which were women. They came from the second largest applicant pool NASA
ever has received -- more than 6,100. The most recent class of flight
directors was also 50% women, NASA said.

NASA has come a long way since 1978, when the first six women joined
NASA's astronaut corps. Today, women comprise 34% of active NASA
astronauts, according to the agency.

"NASA is committed to making sure we have a broad and diverse set of
talent and we're looking forward to the first woman on the moon,"
Bridenstine said.

Happy National Women's Month, indeed.

In 2014, Estonians asked: If their country could serve citizens and

residency, but would still be issued an Estonian digital ID card, enabling
them to operate within Estonia’s digital business environment without
physically being in the country. This would allow more people to establish
and manage an E.U. company entirely online, helping democratize
entrepreneurship globally.

E-Residency Explained: What,Why and How?

Anyone can apply for e-Residency online, regardless of citizenship or
location. Applicants undergo background checks by the Estonian Police and
Border Guard Board and, if approved, are invited to pick up an e-Residency
starter kit containing a digital ID card and PIN codes used for online
authentication and digital signatures.

The benefits? Many expats and digital nomads like e-Residency because they
can run their businesses entirely online in English, from anywhere they
are. Others appreciate being able to run an E.U. company with lower costs
and less hassle. This includes a significant number of entrepreneurs
already living in E.U. countries where business costs and barriers can be
much higher. Finally, many use e-Residency because it’s trusted and can
make doing business globally easier. Thanks to Estonia’s digitized business
environment, anyone can look up who owns a company established by an
e-resident and how it has paid taxes, a transparency valued by
location-independent entrepreneurs. They can access the E.U. market,
connect with like-minded entrepreneurs and use e-services unavailable to
companies registered locally, such as payment providers.

The best way to respond to negative feedback: Take a breather. You might
want to react immediately. But those who take a few days, or weeks, to
digest are more likely to improve, according to research by organisational
psychologist Tasha Eurich. Negative feedback challenges our self-image,
which can feel like a psychological assault. Take some time to interpret
(and reinterpret) what you’ve heard, ask someone you trust for their take
and remember that there’s more to you than this bit of criticism.

Toronto/Canada

Call for papers (PDF)

Chamada de trabalhos (PDF)

INTRODUCTION

In a world of super-diversity, of migratory movements and social,
political, economic, and technological upheavals, the Portuguese
language has taken on a global position. This reality is clearly
manifested on the internet, in large part due to the constant growth of
the Lusophone communities around the world and the intensification of
local and diasporic relationships. Today, perhaps more than ever,
Portuguese language is a unifying factor and a predominant source of
identity in those countries where it is an official language, as well as
their expatriate communities. In addition, the interest in the
Portuguese language is visible in its value as a transnational language
in the global economy, a value evidenced in the growing demand in Asia
and Latin America.

The Lusophone world has created several congregational structures at
various levels (The International Institute of Portuguese Language, the
Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries, the Observatory of the
Portuguese Language, to name a few), which have produced synergies and
movements between its transnational communities, thus contributing to
Lusofonia´s rising international visibility.

This international conference seeks to gather researchers from various
fields interested in the Lusophone world, whose research falls within
York University’s Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies mission
- namely, within the disciplines of Social Sciences and Humanities,
though not exclusively.

This conference will take place in one of the world’s most multicultural
cities, where several communities from Lusophone countries and regions,
such as Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Macau, and
Goa, co-exist harmoniously within the Toronto’s cultural fabric. York
University’s iconic Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies is
the largest in Canada. This is one of the two Canadian universities that
offer a degree in Portuguese & Luso-Brazilian Studies (BA or Honours
Minor), which will celebrate ten years of existence in 2018. York
University also hosts the Canadian Centre for Azorean Research and
Studies (CCARS), the Associação de Estudos Lusófonos/Lusophone Studies
Association and Projeto de História Luso-canadiana/Portuguese Canadian
History project.

This conference aims to promote interdisciplinary dialogue about the
following themes: 1) the revaluation of the status and role of the
Social Sciences and Humanities in university curricula; ii) the
internationalization of Lusophone studies; iii) the presence of language
and Lusophone cultures in various professional/disciplinary areas; iv)
the teaching of foreign languages in higher education, especially
Portuguese; v) the relationship between universities and local
communities; vi) the interaction between businesses and universities as
creators of professional opportunities within the Lusophone world; vii)
experiential education and its role as promoter of synergies among
surrounding communities; viii) new methods of teaching and learning, and
pedagogical projects (flipped classroom, active, collaborative and
meaningful learning/teaching; inter-comprehension); ix) teaching of
culture, history, and Lusophone literatures; x) youth/student
involvement and/or engagement in academic and social initiatives.

We hope that this conference tackles broad topics such as:

What synergies have been established between researchers of the
Lusophone world?

What is the status of Lusophone studies internationally?
What has been the development of Portuguese language within the
contexts of second and third language learning?
Which Lusophone literary, cultural, and artistic expressions have
found a place among different publics?

New law makes it legal for atheist doctors and nurses to refuse care to
religious patients

http://thaumaturgical.com/new-law-makes-legal-atheist-doctors-nurses-refuse-care-religious-patients/

JACKSON, MS – A new law in Mississippi has made it legal for doctors and
nurses to refuse care to certain patients on religious grounds .

The law allows medical staff to refuse treatment to members of the LGBQT
community on the grounds that it violates their religious beliefs. It
would serve to reason this would also pertain to atheist doctors and
nurses who could refuse to treat patients who are religious.

“No, no, no. This isn’t the point of the law at all,” said an angry
senator Frank Danforth (R). “The law is supposed to protect doctors and
nurses who follow the teachings of God and our Lord Jesus Christ from
having to treat patients who practice an unholy lifestyle.”

Many doctors and nurses in Mississippi are against the law, but have
expressed that will also follow it to the letter and refuse treatment to
patients who they feel are bigoted against certain lifestyle choices.

“Of course not all religious people are against LGBQT’s, just like not
all atheists are against religion,” said Dr. Susan Jewer, atheist. “But
if medical professionals are allowed to refuse care on religious
grounds, I am more than happy to oblige.”

To date, there have been no reports of atheist doctors or nurses taking
advantage of the new law.

In recognition of services rendered by the late Dr Ruth Pfau, Prime
Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has announced a state funeral for the nun
from Germany who made eliminating leprosy from Pakistan her life’s mission.

Dr Pfau, who established the country’s leprosy control programme and the
Mary Adelaide Leprosy Center, was dubbed the Mother Teresa of Pakistan.
She passed away in a Karachi hospital at the age of 87 Thursday morning.

“The entire nation is indebted to Ruth Pfau for her selfless and
unmatched services for eradication of leprosy [in Pakistan],” Abbasi
said in a statement.

She, the PM added, gave new hope to innumerable people and proved
through her illustrious toil that serving humanity knows no boundaries.
“We are proud of her exemplary services and she will remain in our
hearts as a shining symbol in times ahead.”

Dr Pfau, a nun from the Society of Daughters of the Heart of Mary, came
to Pakistan when she was 29 in 1960 and decided to stay after she
witnessed the suffering of the country’s leprosy patients.

With her efforts, in 1996, the World Health Organisation declared
Pakistan one of the first countries in Asia to have controlled leprosy.
She was awarded the Hilal-e-Pakistan in 1989 and Hilal-e-Imtiaz in 1979
by the government of Pakistan.

Her funeral mass will be held on Saturday, August 19, at 11am at St
Patrick’s Cathedral and will be buried in the Christian Cemetery (Gora
Qabristan).

PPP moves resolution in NA
Meanwhile, lawmakers from the Pakistan Peoples Party moved a resolution
in the National Assembly to acknowledge Dr Pfau’s services.

“We, the members of the National Assembly express our deepest sorrow at
the passing away of Dr Ruth Katherine Pfau, a great humanist who spent a
lifetime dedicated to public service in Pakistan,” read the resolution,
which was moved by Nafisa Shah.

“This house resolves that her rich legacy of selflessness, hope and
perseverance be commemorated through a befitting state funeral. This
house further resolves that a care foundation be set up in recognition
of her services by the government of Pakistan.”

Founded in France in 1790 by a Jesuit, Father Pierre de Clorivière and a
lay woman, Adelaide de Cicé, our mission is to bring the Gospel message
of Jesus out in the midst of the world, witnessed through our own lives
of service to the Church and God’s people.

The Society of the Daughters of the Heart of Mary is an international
congregation of women who profess vows of Chastity, Poverty, and
Obedience and live religious life without a distinctive sign or title.
We live contemporary and often hidden lives patterned after that of Mary
of Nazareth, with community life through a common spirituality and
prayer life.

[Goanet] OffTopic: From Canada. Engineer to become Governor General

2017-07-13 Thread AF P
OTTAWA—

Julie Payette (age 53), Canada’s second woman in space, will be Canada’s
next governor general, the CBC has reported.

An engineer born in Montreal, Payette was selected as a Canadian astronaut
in June 1992, going on to make two space shuttle flights and becoming the
first Canadian on the International Space Station.

Sources say Trudeau informed the Queen during an audience with her last
week of his recommendation to the post.

Current Gov. Gen. David Johnston’s term is set to expire in September,
after Stephen Harper extended it by two years ahead of the 2015 federal
election.

The identity of his replacement has been a closely guarded secret. Payette
would become the 29th person to hold the position.

An engineer born in Montreal, Payette was selected as a Canadian astronaut
in June 1992, going on to make two space shuttle flights and becoming the
first Canadian on the International Space Station. Payette hung up her
flight suit in 2013 to become chief operating officer of the Montreal
Science Centre as well as vice-president of the Canada Lands Company.

Traditionally, the viceregal job rotates between anglophones and
francophones, with all indications pointing to a francophone filling the
portfolio beginning this fall.

Johnston, who had a long career in academia, was chosen for the position
off a short list presented to Harper by an ad hoc committee of experts
struck with the express task of selecting a non-partisan person with
constitutional knowledge.

At the time, Harper had a minority government and so who held the post of
governor general was essential to maintaining the stability of government.

The names of those on the selection committee weren’t published until after
Johnston’s nomination, but Harper would go on to make the committee a
permanent body, saying a process to ensure a non-partisan approach to
appointments was important.

When asked late last year how he’d pick the next governor general, Trudeau
was noncommittal about what process he would use.

“I’m not going to change things just to reinvent the wheel,” Trudeau said
in a year-end interview with The Canadian Press.

“If there is a good process that we can improve by making (it) more open
and transparent and more diverse, that I will probably do.”

Johnston is currently on a visit to China, and is expected to have an
audience with the Queen next week when he travels to the U.K. for Canada
150 events, likely marking the last time he will sit face-to-face with the
monarch he represents.

In his farewell speech on Canada Day, Johnston said he has learned much in
his seven years on the job.

“These are challenging but exciting times,” he said.

“And together we can show the world what a great country looks like. To me
it looks like Canada, a country that strives, always, to be smarter and
more caring — to do better, together.”

and business development in the Diaspora.

Gerrard Street Village (Little India, or Gerrard India Bazaar) is the grand
old lady of the Indian retail storefronts and restaurants in Canada. There
are now numerous South Asia areas in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) among
the 100's of other multi-ethnic neighbourhoods.

These neighbourhoods are not ghettos but remarkably well organized,
internationally integrated, vibrant areas. They are places where people
dream hard and work hard.

I'm sure this is similar to every city in the Western World.

They are asking these questions over and over again on social media, TV,

1) Why don’t Trump supporters turn against Trump even though he is doing
things that hurt them? (like taking away their healthcare)

2) Why do Republicans hate the Affordable Care Act, and why are they so
transparently acting to give wealthy people a tax break by making
healthcare unaffordable?
Here is the short answer: *All politics is moral*.

Catholic school St Stanislaus under fire for staging apology service for
victims of abuse

By the National Reporting Team's Lorna Knowles and Alison Branley
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-06-15/catholic-school-under-fire-for-staging-apology-service/8621990

One of Australia's oldest Catholic boarding schools is under fire for
turning an apology to victims of child sexual abuse into a religious
service.

At least 160 students of St Stanislaus College in Bathurst were abused
by paedophile priests and staff over three decades, between the 1970s
and 1990s.

The school plans to host an "Apology Service of Sorrow and Hope" on
Friday night but victims say asking them to attend the school – where
the abuse happened – and incorporating the apology into a religious
service would trigger painful memories.

The head of the school, Dr Anne Wenham, said the event was intended as a
genuine commitment to say sorry to victims.

"There will be prayers as part of this service. Sensitive to the
experiences of our guests, we will be praying to God for forgiveness for
the sexual abuse that took place at this college by former members of
staff and for healing and hope for the many survivors," Ms Wenham said
in a statement.

But leading child protection advocate, Hetty Johnstone from Bravehearts,
said it was cruel and insensitive to expect victims who were betrayed by
people of faith to participate in a religious service.

"To force a survivor into an institution where they've been harmed to
hear an apology is totally bereft of any kind of understanding about
what's happening for survivors," Ms Johnstone told the ABC.

"You've got these people still sitting in these positions of power and
authority who just don't get it. Who don't really want to apologise, I
don't think.

"They'll do it on their terms but not on the survivor's terms."

Jason Thorpe was sexually abused by serial paedophile Brian Spillane at
the school in the 1990s, when he was 14. Spillane is one of a dozen
people connected to the school who have been convicted of child sexual
assault.

Mr Thorpe told the ABC he found the idea of an apology service insulting.

"I don't want a liturgy. It's kind of like an insult, I feel. I mean to
go to church knowing that the perpetrator was that church — that would
bring back for me, memories. Just to acknowledge to say 'you were
wronged, you were hurt' — that would be good," Mr Thorpe said.

Kinghorn walking along a path

service was insulting. (ABC News)

Mr Thorpe's mother Deirdre Kinghorn said she was worried about the
impact on her son.

"It was priests and brothers that did the damage, so why have a church
service that will trigger something in him?" Ms Kinghorn said.

"We've had 20 years of hell with him, keeping him sane, keeping him
even and it's going to trigger [him], it's not worth it."

Ms Kinghorn said families members would have preferred an apology in a
neutral, informal setting.

"Just to have a get-together, a cup of tea and a snack, a buffet and get
to know each other and perhaps say sorry that way," she said.

"Not go to the school and say 'Well we're sorry'. It doesn't mean a thing."

Carole Nielsen's son Tor was also abused by Spillane and later became
the whistleblower on abuse at the school.

Ms Nielsen said she was furious about the planned apology service.

"To have a religious ceremony where a lot of the boys were abused in
prayer meetings to me was just astonishing," Ms Nielsen said.

"At worst, it's sinister and at best, it's just total ignorance. I don't
think you can have any sort of reconciliation unless you have a degrees
of empathy or compassion for the people that you're trying to reconcile
with and I don't think any of that's been displayed by this apology".

NSW Greens MP David Shoebridge said it appeared the school had learned
nothing from the lessons of the royal commission.

"We've heard story after story, case study after case study which shows
how badly institutions have responded in the past," Mr Shoebridge said.

"You would've thought the church and this school would have learnt the
lesson, but instead they're still disrespecting the victims. They're
still prioritising their own needs."

Barack Obama's appearance on Little Burgundy's gourmet restaurant strip
coincided with a non-rainy night to ensure that people lined up on both
sides of the street to catch a glimpse of the former U.S. president, as
police and Obama’s security detail kept a close watch.

Obama had dinner with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau immediately after
giving a speech at the Palais des congres, organized by the Board of
Trade of Metropolitan Montreal, where Obama delivered a message of hope
to a sellout crowd.

With the ominous black SUVs parked outside, people thought the duo would
be eating at Joe Beef, but they ended up at Liverpool House.

'Even Obama couldn’t get a table at Joe Beef', someone in the crowd joked.

A couple of hours later, the two politicians emerged from the restaurant
looking relaxed and, with big smiles on their faces, waved to the
cheering onlookers on Notre-Dame St. before Obama got into his black SUV
and left the scene.

More wishful thinking from sore losers.

How immature this dude really is!

Now he is crying 'the sky is falling down' regarding the failure of a passage
of the health care law! Nobody expects 100% smooth sail in politics. This is
what democracy is about. I have said before, the Republicans can only work to
make it better. Not the other way around.

I am still a big fan of Obamacare even though the law did not manage to rein in
insurance premiums - something I was really banking on. Even with more people
insured. the existing law did not bring down premiums. Without additional help
from the federal government, the law will definitely collapse in the coming
years, as it needs financial support from the federal government to continue
subsidizing the premiums for lower income groups. Get yourself educated on the
negative pitfalls of Obamacare. The law needs changes - not a complete re-write.

Look up here on what I wrote back in 2010 regarding Obamacare. I even had the
foresight to say that the law would need tweaking in the future. Reading this,
you will notice I am neither pro-Democrats nor pro-Republicans:
https://www.mail-archive.com/goanet@lists.goanet.org/msg59841.html

One of the things I know of Trump is that he hates to lose. The guy is a
fighter - not a nincompoop. He has zero characteristics of some of the sore
losers on GoaNet. I am sure, some day he'll sign a modified health bill that
will be great for Americans and when he does that, I'll give this loser a nice
opportunity to slap this post back on his sorry face.

There has never been a single political event where this dude's forecasts have
been right.

Hello?

Robots taking away American jobs?

Yes, you are right ... only to some extent. But you are missing the bigger
picture!

Someone has to build and maintain those robots in America! And the builders and
maintenance workers of those robots won't be the Chinese. The Chinese don't
have the brains to innovate. They can only steal and copy American technology.
This would mean more higher paying 'Robotics' jobs for Americans. Guess what
... the yanks could also export those robots or the goods the robots produce at
a competitive price back to the Chinese - only if them Chinese reciprocated and
opened up their markets to yanky companies.

The fact of the matter is that the US is already seeing lesser number of
illegals crossing from the southern border. That means less free-loaders eating
my tax dollars.

More American companies have already announced increased hiring and investments
in the US. Just today, we got a second ADP jobs report since Trump came in. The
numbers are awesome! Wall Street is mad in love with Trump. Businesses in the
US and the population in general are seeing increased optimism [except for the
Lefty press and a few grumbling losers on GoaNet :( ]. Have you missed the fact
that the stock markets are shooting into the stratosphere since Trump kicked
Hillary out and into retirement?

The H-1B visa's are greatly restricted to disallow entry of cheap foreign
labor. Trump's administration will only let in top talent for top salaries.
This is great news for new immigrants as well as local Americans. I am already
seeing increased compensation for folks in my line of business after going
through a period of stagnation for years!

Really awesome news to cheer about!

Mervyn and George,

My bet is on section 4 of the 25th amendment of the U.S. constitution
- president unable to discharge. But more likely he will hobble along,
and stumble and bumble. Immoral loud mouth bullies are invariably
mentally weak. They always end up embarrassing themselves, unable to
accomplish anything. It might be better that way. Here is another nice
piece by the conservative writer Jennifer Rubin:

2017-04-05 Thread Gabe Menezes
For what it's worth my two centsI don't think Trump will be able to
bring back jobs. A case in point is the Carrier plant in USA. So big deal
United technologies sacrificed 60 mm for the sale of 60 billion. At the end
of the day the plant will be made of efficient with robots and the work
force will be reduced.

The moot point is that Robots are taking jobs, Only infrastructure projects
could create jobs.

I accept that the metrics in the USA changed and people wanted change, the
Russians did not change the outcome perhaps! Did they interfere with the
elections in collusion? That would be unacceptable and bring this thing
round on your heels.

Impeachment? Seriously?

Go ask people in the rust belt or those folks in the middle of the country what
they thought of Trump. They love the man! The Lefty media and the impotent
Democratic party lost big in what most pollsters thought they had the election
in the bag. The losers can't get over the fact that they got rotten eggs on
their shameless faces and are now trying to cook up stuff that has zero bearing
on what most people care about Jobs.

I am unable to comprehend the Lefty claim that somehow Russian is responsible
for Trump's shellacking of Clinton. Instead doing some soul searching why
Hillary lost or why Americans voted Trump to be their President, the Lefties
are now desperately trying to find a scapegoat. Are American's stupid to be
swayed by Russia to vote for Trump? Americans went to the polls without
anybody's help and voted with a clear mind, for a leader they thought who most
likely represented their interests.

It is the fault of the Democratic party to side with Clinton instead of Bernie
Sanders. The crooked party elites, didn't want to see a Jew running their
country. So they connived to oust poor Bernie. Now learn to live with the loss
and burn the next 4 err ... 8 years twiddling your thumbs.

More recently, the new Democratic party leader forced everybody on their staff
to resign. This is a good start. They got to re-calibrate their expectations
and re-focus their energies on helping Americans get back to well paying jobs.
Instead of focusing on creating jobs that can make people get off of welfare,
the Democrats are focusing on keeping people on welfare and spoon feeding these
unfortunate folks by way of food stamps, medicaid and other social programs, so
that they stay addicted to their current state, in hopes of locking on their
votes.

This is a terrible strategy. I have moved away from it ...

Tell me what your guys are doing to create well paying jobs for Americans and
we can go from there. Don't waste your time talking nonsense such as
"impeachment", where the losers have virtually zero power in Washington.

If you still care to do so, here's what you need to first have in the bag and
the Democrats have neither:
1. A simple majority in the House of Representatives - the Democrats don't.
2. You need at least 67 votes (out of 100) in the US Senate - the Democates
don't even command a simple majority.

Keep dreaming ... friggin' losers.

[Goanet] offtopic: Hans Rosling dies aged 68. Making data sing

2017-02-08 Thread AF P
Hans Rosling dies aged 68

Statistician and development champion, whose gift for making data sing
brought his innovative ideas to a worldwide audience, dies after
year-long illness

Last modified on Tuesday 7 February 2017 21.20 GMT
https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2017/feb/07/hans-rosling-obituary

It was his first Ted talk that thrust renowned Swedish academic Hans
Rosling into the international spotlight in 2006, billed as the man in
whose hands data sings. Since then, the statistician more likely to
illustrate an idea with a few multi-coloured lego bricks than a
PowerPoint has been described as everything from a data guru to a Jedi
master of data visualisation.

He died on Tuesday, aged 68, after a year-long illness, surrounded by
his family in Uppsala, Sweden.

A professor of international health at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute,
Rosling liked to call himself an “edutainer”. A talented presenter,
whose signature animated data visualisations have featured in dozens
of film clips, the statistician used humour and often unlikely objects
such as children’s toys, cardboard boxes and teacups to liven up data
on wealth, inequality and population.

Rosling’s work featured in a BBC4 documentary on The Joy of Stats, and
he presented Don’t Panic – the Truth about Population on BBC2. He was
also involved in founding the Swedish chapter of Medécins Sans
Frontières, according to Swedish media reports. When the Ebola
outbreak led to states of emergency being declared in Liberia and
Sierra Leone in 2014, Rosling went out to Monrovia to work with the
Liberian government on their emergency response, tracking cases and
pinpointing missing data.

Time magazine included him in its 2012 list of the world’s 100 most
influential people, saying his “stunning renderings of the numbers …
have moved millions of people worldwide to see themselves and our
planet in new ways”.

But in an interview in the Guardian, in 2013, he was dismissive about
his impact on knowledge. Asked what had surprised him the most about
the reaction he had received, he said: “It’s that I became so famous
with so little impact on knowledge. Fame is easy to acquire, impact is
much more difficult. When we asked the Swedish population how many
children are born per woman in Bangladesh, they still think it’s four
to five. I have no impact on knowledge. I have only had impact on
fame, and doing funny things, and so on.”

Claire Provost, a former Guardian journalist who interviewed Rosling
in 2013, said: “Given the timing, with all the talk about fake news,
alternative facts, concern over misinformation and
propaganda-by-numbers, Rosling stood for the exact opposite – the idea
we can have debates about what could or should be done, but that facts
and an open mind are needed before informed discussions can begin.”

Daniel Ek, the CEO of Spotify, tweeted: “I am deeply saddened by the
news of the passing of my friend, @HansRosling. Few Swedes had an
impact such as his.”

Sweden’s deputy prime minister, Isabella Lövin, wrote on Facebook: “ …
For the world, Hans Rosling was a great fighter for the right to
health, for reducing maternal mortality and for supporting fragile
countries damaged by conflict. He challenged the whole world’s view of
development with his amazing teaching skills. He managed to show
everyone that things are moving forward … I think the whole world will
miss his vision and his way of standing up for the facts –
unfortunately it feels like they are necessary more than ever at the
moment – so the loss is even more painful.”

A statement was posted on Gapminder, the foundation he co-founded with
his son and daughter-in-law in 2007: the venture was named after
London Underground’s “mind the gap” notices in reference to bridging
the divide between statistics and their interpretation. “We are
extremely sad to announce that Professor Hans Rosling died this
morning. Hans suffered from a pancreatic cancer which was diagnosed
one year ago. He passed away early Tuesday morning, February 7, 2017,
surrounded by his family in Uppsala, Sweden.

“Eleven years ago, the three of us, Hans Rosling, Ola Rosling & Anna
Rosling Rönnlund founded Gapminder. In 2007 Hans decided to “drop out”
of university to work only 5% as professor at Karolinska Institute.
That was a great decision. The 95% he worked for Gapminder made him a
world famous public educator, or ‘edutainer’, as he liked to call it.

“Across the world, millions of people use our tools and share our
vision of a fact-based worldview that everyone can understand. We know
that many will be saddened by this message. Hans is no longer alive,
but he will always be with us and his dream of a fact-based worldview,
we will never let die!”

Not since Lincoln has there been a president fundamentally shaped — in

as Barack Obama.

Last Friday, seven days before his departure from the White House, Mr.
Obama sat down in the Oval Office and talked about the indispensable

Transcript: President Obama on What Books Mean to Him
JAN. 16, 2017

Michiko Kakutani, the chief book critic for The New York Times,
interviewed President Obama about literature on Friday at the White
House. Here are excerpts from the conversation, which have been edited
and condensed.

These books that you gave to your daughter Malia on the Kindle, what
were they? Some of your favorites?

I think some of them were sort of the usual suspects, so “The Naked and
the Dead” or “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” I think she hadn’t read yet.

Then there were some books I think that are not on everybody’s reading
list these days, but I remembered as being interesting, like “The Golden
Notebook” by Doris Lessing, for example. Or “The Woman Warrior,” by
Maxine [Hong Kingston].

Part of what was interesting was me pulling back books that I thought
were really powerful, but that might not surface when she goes to college.

Have you had a chance to discuss them with her?

I’ve had the chance to discuss some. And she’s interested in being a
filmmaker, so storytelling is of great interest to her. She had just
read “A Moveable Feast.” I hadn’t included that, and she was just
captivated by the idea that Hemingway described his goal of writing one
true thing every day.

What made you want to become a writer?

I loved reading when I was a kid, partly because I was traveling so
much, and there were times where I’d be displaced, I’d be the outsider.
When I first moved to Indonesia, I’m this big, dark-skinned kid that
kind of stood out. And then when I moved back from Indonesia to Hawaii,
I had the manners and habits probably of an Indonesian kid.

And so the idea of having these worlds that were portable, that were
yours, that you could enter into, was appealing to me. And then I became
a teenager and wasn’t reading that much other than what was assigned in
school, and playing basketball and chasing girls, and imbibing things
that weren’t very healthy.

I think all of us did.

Yeah. And then I think rediscovered writing and reading and thinking in
my first or second year of college and used that as a way to rebuild
myself, a process I write about in “Dreams From My Father.”

That period in New York, where you were intensely reading.

I was hermetic — it really is true. I had one plate, one towel, and I’d
buy clothes from thrift shops. And I was very intense, and sort of
humorless. But it reintroduced me to the power of words as a way to
figure out who you are and what you think, and what you believe, and
what’s important, and to sort through and interpret this swirl of events
that is happening around you every minute.

And so even though by the time I graduated I knew I wanted to be
involved in public policy, or I had these vague notions of organizing,
the idea of continuing to write and tell stories as part of that was
valuable to me. And so I would come home from work, and I would write in
my journal or write a story or two.

The great thing was that it was useful in my organizing work. Because
when I got there, the guy who had hired me said that the thing that
brings people together to have the courage to take action on behalf of
their lives is not just that they care about the same issue, it’s that
they have shared stories. And he told me that if you learn how to listen
to people’s stories and can find what’s sacred in other people’s
stories, then you’ll be able to forge a relationship that lasts.

But my interest in public service and politics then merged with the idea
of storytelling.

What were your short stories like?

It’s interesting, when I read them, a lot of them had to do with older
people.

I think part of the reason was because I was working in communities with
people who were significantly older than me. We were going into
churches, and probably the average age of these folks was 55, 60. A lot
of them had scratched and clawed their way into the middle class, but
just barely. They were seeing the communities in which they had invested
their

'You are fake news," an angry U.S. president-elect Donald Trump told a

[Goanet] Offtopic: Creativity and self-promotion can be two opposing forces - Economist

2017-01-11 Thread Albert Peres

Creativity and self-promotion can be two opposing forces
Prospero Jan 10th 2017, 12:30

by I.M. More

IN THE early 1900s, a young woman named Agatha Miller had a dream of
becoming a concert pianist. The only obstacle in her way was her
crippling stage fright. Haunted by nightmares of the piano turning into
a church organ or its keys sticking together, her anxiety made her ill
and she could not perform. She chose another vocation and, under her
married name, Agatha Christie became the world’s best-selling novelist.
Yet her “miserable, horrible, inevitable shyness” continued to plague
her throughout her life. She refused to speak in public, found
conversation awkward and parties hell, but her artistic pursuits drew
her into the limelight. This is the contradictory and fraught world of
the shy artist. And in an age of 24-hour media and celebrity, it is an
increasingly hostile one.

Shyness and creativity often go hand in hand. The brooding musician,
reclusive writer and antisocial genius are stereotypical creative types.
There is inevitably a common connection between the deep feeling and
introspection that leads to great art and the sensitivity that manifests
itself as social anxiety. In “Shrinking Violets”, Joe Moran’s field
guide to shyness, he talks about the refuge that the shy find in the
arts. Creating and performing can act as compensation for not being able
to communicate in other ways. Some, like Lady Gaga or David Bowie, have
used performance as a kind of protection, inventing bold, flamboyant
alter-egos. Both have described themselves as being painfully shy in
their youths. There are many who talk of acting as an escape from
shyness; some feel more comfortable performing than having everyday
interactions. Mr Moran points to the existence of the German word
Maskenfreiheit: “the freedom that comes from wearing masks”.

In previous generations it was easier to keep a public persona and a
private life separate. But today, thanks to the internet, celebrity
culture and social media, the shy artist has less private space to
withdraw to. To feed the ever-hungry media beast, there are
unprecedented invasions of privacy: topless photos taken using drones
and personal photos being downloaded from the cloud. Unwanted attention
aside, there is so much “noise” out there that to be heard as an artist,
there is a greater need for self-promotion.

This is true even in writing, traditionally the least performative of
the arts. You can no longer just write—the writer has to be part of the
product, talking at book fairs and smiling from book jackets. A website
offering marketing tips for introverts has emerged as a sanctuary for
the publicity-shy writer. There is even a section “For Those We Lose
Along The Way”, for writers who have been so scarred by their forays
into the world of publishing that they give up completely. It is an
conundrum that has come to the fore with the “unmasking” of Elena
Ferrante—a woman who said in an interview that she wanted “to liberate
[herself] from the anxiety of notoriety” in order to write her best and
most honest work. The investigative journalist who did the unmasking
felt that the fact she gave interviews (through her publishers), and put
allegedly autobiographical details in a recently released collection,
meant that her identity was a matter of public interest.

Many performers struggle with the kind of attention that fame brings.
Pink Floyd became disillusioned with the god-like status imposed upon
them, a fundamental part of the idea of alienation explored in their
concept album “The Wall”. Those like Kurt Cobain were aware of their own
growing narcissism: “I don’t care what you think unless it is about me.”
Others feel they’re being rewarded for the wrong thing—their audience
not really appreciating what makes them special. Marilyn Monroe was
described by Arthur Miller, her final husband, as “a poet on a street
corner trying to recite to a crowd pulling at her clothes”. Cobain,
Monroe, and both David Gilmour and Syd Barrett from Pink Floyd are all
described as shy.

Adding to the problem is the fact that shyness can so easily be
misconstrued. As Mr Moran says, it is often read as “displaced
aggression or narcissism”. Googling “shy artists” does not return a list
of artists necessarily viewed as shy: Kristen Stewart, Elton John, Brad
Pitt, Steven Spielberg. When shy artists retreat into themselves, it can
be viewed as rude, moody and ungrateful and the claim of not wanting
attention can seem contrived. The act of “running away” or “hiding from
the spotlight” is often seen as a publicity stunt. This was already a
problem in the 1930s. When Agatha Christie had a breakdown and tried to
escape, she was chased “like a fox” by the press. They, as well as the
curious public, were convinced it was a ploy for attention. When Sia, a
musician (pictured), is asked why she chooses the (admittedly rather

Harbir Singh, Canadian campaign director for the Pink Ladoo Project,
says volunteers are handing out pink ladoos at two hospitals in the
Toronto area on Tuesday to promote gender equality. The sweet treats
will celebrate the birth of girl children, she said. (CBC)

A group of women distributed a South Asian sweet treat at two Toronto
area hospitals on Tuesday — in the hopes of birthing a new tradition to
celebrate baby girls.

The group handed out ladoos, a sweet made of flour and sugar and rolled
into balls, which are typically given to mark the birth of a baby boy.
On Tuesday, the ladoos, given out at Brampton Civic Hospital and
Etobicoke General Hospital, were coloured pink in part to mark the UN's
International Day of the Girl Child.

Related story: Indo-Canadian couples choosing sons over daughters: study

It was all part of the Pink Ladoo Project, an international movement
designed to eradicate gender-biased South Asian practices, customs and
traditions.

Harbir Singh, the Canadian director of the Pink Ladoo Project, told
CBC's Metro Morning that members of the South Asian community distribute
ladoos during periods of celebration.

"Families travel door to door and go to their families and friends
throughout the community and distribute this sweet as a celebration,"
Singh said Tuesday. "Traditionally, it's only been for boy children.
What we have done is coloured this ladoo pink to represent gender
equality for the girl child." No sweets handed out when girls born

Singh, a mother of two daughters, aged two and six, said the tradition
was followed in her family and it was part of what she calls "male
preference culture." When she was growing up, Singh said celebrations
were held for her older and younger brothers, but not for her — and
these traditions made her question her value in the family.

"Traditionally, growing up in a South Asian family, I never saw anyone
come to our door and celebrate the birth of a girl child, or hand out
any sweets, or book large parties with their families and their friends
to celebrate. That was an issue that impacted me as a child," she said.

"Therefore, I have become involved in this as an adult. I want to raise
awareness and I want to address this issue of male preference culture so
my two daughters never have to have this conversation."

Another tradition that affected Singh as a child is that she was told
from a young age that she was born into one family but would belong to
the family of her husband when she married.

"You are sent a message very early that your true home will be your
husband's home," she said. "That affected me as a child. I felt that I
was a part of my family. I felt a lot of difficulty with connecting with
this part of the culture, so I want to change that."

Campaign manager Baljot Grewal has witnessed gender inequality firsthand
while studying dentistry in India the last five years. "I've become more
aware of the value that's being given to women by men and society in
these cultures," she said. "Men are seen as the breadwinner and the
carrier of the family name. Historically, they have been deemed more
important than women and it's time to change that."

Pink ladoos to promote change

Grewal hopes the campaign sparks a needed conversation. "I want people
to start asking why we're not celebrating girls the same as boys and why
a dedicated day is needed to raise awareness," she said. "We've been
doing a lot of explaining to families today who don't know about the
imbalance. Education is key."

Singh said distributing pink ladoos at local hospitals is a small way to
promote larger change within South Asian families by creating a positive
tradition that celebrates girl children.

The event is a way to counter traditions, cultures and rituals
associated with male preference culture, she said.

"We are starting with this one small step, but hoping we will inspire a
much larger conversation," she said.

She said the group believes that if a family celebrates the birth of a
girl child, and there is awareness of gender equality at birth, then
that family is more likely to have other conversations about sexist
traditions as the girl grows up.

She said her older daughter, for example, now thinks pink ladoos are
handed out when girl children are born.

Charpentier hired the 19-year-old Mansbridge as the host of CHFC's late

The trouble with Mother Teresa

https://www.thestar.com/opinion/commentary/2016/09/01/the-trouble-with-mother-teresa.html

As the Catholic Church prepares to canonize the famous nun, questions
remain about just how good she was.

By Michael Coren
Thu., Sept. 1, 2016

My first job in journalism was at the New Statesman magazine in Britain
in the early 1980s. I was new and shiny and one of the first people I
met was a man who was not new and shone in an entirely different way.
Christopher Hitchens – he didn’t like “Chris” – was as generous as he
was gifted. But he didn’t suffer fools or frauds.

One of the most famous of the latter was, in his opinion, a woman who is
about to be acknowledged as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. Mother
Teresa, born in Albania as Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, and someone whom to
many embodies the best in Christianity. Hitchens disagreed, wrote a book
about her called The Missionary Position and insisted that she was a
force for evil rather than good.

I would not be as bold, and could not be as brilliant, as the exquisite
Hitch but Good God – and I do believe Him to be good and great – he had
a point. Hitchens’ argument, among others, was that Mother Teresa
provided sub-standard medical care, took money from dictators and
criminals and often cozied up to them, pushed her faith on the
vulnerable and sick and encouraged western Catholic journalists to paint
her as divine.

There are indeed many unanswered questions about the level of aid the
poor of Calcutta actually received and it’s beyond dispute that Teresa
was heavily funded by brutes such as Jean-Claude Duvalier of Haiti, who
stole a fortune from his own people while they lived in poverty. Not
only did she take the man’s cash, she lionized him as a great leader.
She also praised the repugnant Albanian despot Enver Hoxha and laid
flowers at his grave and welcomed donations from British publisher and
criminal Robert Maxwell.

The case of the anti-pornography zealot and businessman Charles Keating
is particularly disturbing. He gave millions of dollars to Teresa and
the use of his private jet when she visited the United States. Although
he was sent to prison for more than four years for fraud, and thousands
of people were hurt by what he did, Teresa refused to refund any of the
money he had donated.

There are also ideological and systemic problems. She campaigned against
contraceptive use in a country ravaged by over-population and it almost
goes without saying that she vehemently opposed abortion rights. Her
motivation was conservative Catholic rather than progressively human. “I
think it is very beautiful for the poor to accept their lot, to share it
with the passion of Christ,” she said. “I think the world is being much
helped by the suffering of the poor people.” That is not how the poor
feel as they watch their babies die in their arms.

It’s important to emphasize that there are countless Catholic and other
Christian groups performing outstanding work in India and elsewhere who
do not adopt Teresa’s reactionary views and dubious ways, and do not
have or want the public relations machine that she enjoyed. Some of the
most successful social programs in India are funded internationally by
western governments who also urge family planning, LGBTQ equality and
divorce rights, all opposed not only by the new saint but by her church.
More than this, the bulk of the good and selfless work being performed
in India is by Indian Hindus and Muslims, not white Christians.

The ceremony announcing to the world that Mother Teresa can be prayed to
and revered will take place in a Vatican in possession of wealth through
paintings, manuscripts, statues and investments that is beyond
comprehension, and in spite of a few utterly cosmetic changes by Pope
Francis there is no indication that this will ever change. The glaring
juxtaposition between what the tiny Albanian woman was at least supposed
to represent and the Roman reality is, frankly, scandalous.

It was another Catholic, the Brazilian archbishop Dom Helder Camara, who
said, “When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask
why the poor have no food, they call me a communist.” But he and his
liberation theology were not popular with a Papacy that embraced a woman
who refused to ask the right questions, apologized for the culprits and
ignored the causes.

Michael Coren’s latest book is Epiphany: A Christian’s Change of Heart &
Mind over Same-Sex Marriage (Random House). mco...@sympatico.ca

--- end---

I'll be the first to agree, to his credit Pope Francis is attempting to
to right the ship... and lets face it, this is the declared year of mercy...

Details of Chetan Bhagat's new book 'One Indian Girl' are out. Be afraid,
be very afraid

FP Staff Aug 19, 2016 17:57 IST

Guys, guess what!

Chetan Bhagat is back with a new book. The writer floored us with this
tweet this morning:

Then came a tweet with the new book title — and a teaser trailer:

The teaser trailer summarises the protagonist's character traits, which
might (or might not) have been inspired by an Ekta Kapoor soap.

Here's a synopsis of the book for you:

Hi I am Radhika Mehta and I'm getting married this week.
I work in a top investment bank.
Thank you for reading my crazy story
However let me warn you.
You may not like me too much.
One, I make a lot of money
Two, I have an opinion on everything.
Three, I have had sex before.
Now if I were a guy, you'd be cool with all this.
Since I am a girl,
these things don't make me too likeable, do they?

In an interview on his blog, Bhagat tells us why he's written this book:

"One Indian Girl is about an Indian girl who is intelligent and successful,
because of which she finds it difficult to get love," says the writer of
Two States. "I have wanted to write a book in female first person for the
past several years. Not only that, I wanted that book to be about women,
and deal with feminism. To do all this as a male writer was a huge
challenge."

The book will be out on 1 October 2016.

On that note, here is an excerpt from the book, made available on Bhagat's
blog. Yeah, you can thank us later!

Prologue

Some people are good at taking decisions. I am not one of them. Some people
fall asleep quickly at night. I am not one of them either. It is three in
the morning. I have tossed and turned in bed for two hours. I am to get
married in fifteen hours. We have two hundred guests in the hotel, here to
attend my grand destination wedding. I brought them here. Everyone is
excited. It is the first destination wedding in the Mehta family.

I am the bride. I should get my beauty sleep. I can’t. The last thing I
care about right now is beauty. The only thing I care about is how to get
out of this mess. Because like what often happens to me in life, here I am
yet again in a situation where I don’t know what the fuck is going on.

Chapter 1

“What do you mean not enough rooms?” I said to Arijit Banerjee, the lobby
manager of the Goa Marriott.

“See, what I am trying to explain is...” Arijit began in his modulated,
courteous voice when mom cut him off.

“It’s my daughter’s wedding. Are you going to shame us?” she said, her
volume loud enough to startle the rest of the reception staff.

“No, ma’am. Just a shortage of twenty rooms. You booked a hundred. We
promised eighty then. We hoped to give more but the chief minister had a
function and…”

“What do we tell our guests who have come all the way from America?” Mom
said.

“If I may suggest, there is another hotel two kilometers away,” Arijit said.

“We have to be together. You are going to ruin my daughter’s wedding for
some sarkaari function?” my mother said, bosom high, breath heavy - classic
warning signs of an upcoming storm.

“Mom, go sit with Dad, please. I will sort this out,” I said. Mom glared at
me. How could I, the bride, be doing all this in the first place? I should
be worried about my facials, not room allocations.

“The boy’s side arrives in less than three hours. I can’t believe this,”
she muttered, walking to the sofa at the center of the lobby. My father sat
there along with Kamla bua, his elder sister. Other uncles and aunts
occupied the remaining couches in the lobby - in a Mehta takeover of the
Marriott. My mother looked at my father, a level two glare. It signified:
‘Will you ever take initiative in life?’

My father shifted in his seat. I re-focused on the lobby manager.

“What can be done now, Arijit?” I said. “My family is all here.”

We had come on the morning flight from Delhi. The Gulatis, or the boy’s
side, would take off from Mumbai at three p.m. and land in Goa at four p.m.
Twenty hired Innovas would bring them to the hotel by five. I checked the
time. 2:30 p.m.

“See, ma’am, we have set up a special desk for the Mehta-Gulati wedding,”
Arijit said. “We are doing the check-ins for your family now.”

He pointed to a makeshift counter at the far corner of the lobby where
three female Marriott employees with permanent smiles sat. They welcomed
everyone with folded hands. Each guest received a shell necklace, a set of
key cards for the room, a map of the Marriott Goa property and a ‘wedding
information booklet’. The booklet contained the entire programme for the
week, including the time, venue and other details of the ceremonies.

“My side will take fifty rooms. The Gulatis need fifty too,” I said.

“If you take fifty, ma’am, we will have only thirty left for them,” Arijit
said.

“Where is Suraj?” I said. ‘We will manage last minute’ is what he told me.

[Goanet] OffTopic: Review of CBC includes comparison with BBC (Canada)

2016-08-15 Thread Albert Peres

Document compares CBC, BBC as Liberals review public broadcaster
Liberal review of CBC's future includes comparison with BBC

http://www.cbc.ca/beta/news/politics/cbc-bbc-melanie-joly-liberal-radio-canada-1.3717008

-- CBC's mandate "is anchored more explicitly in the idea of building a
shared national consciousness and identity," unlike the BBC which is
focused more on "sustaining citizenship and promoting cultural excellence."

-- The BBC is more outward-looking, with a mandate "to bring the UK to
the world," while CBC's international service is an add-on rather than a
core purpose.

-- The British government has an arm's-length procedure for appointing
BBC directors, unlike the CBC.

Would be interesting to review Australia and New Zealand as well...
