[Goanet] Sunburn burnt out

2024-07-14 Thread Nelson Lopes
Sunburn burnt out
EDM festival was shunted out because of spreading ills of drug abuse. It
was relocated and strangely made comeback .Now the Govt wants to foist it
on Salcette. The vox populi has raised hue and cry to stop the shifting. The
music is not indigenous and it is drugs ,prostitution, criminal activities
that are the attraction. and strain on law and order ,traffic regulations
et all.Goa is not on world rudder of Tourism because of EDM. The so-called
revenue benefits outweigh peace and tranquility issues and coreupting youth
.Goa needs to aggressively promote our own music and culture. In Dec there
are enough enjoyable and entertaining activities that are a draw.Instead
Govt need to provide better infrastructure and law and order measures.
Criminal activities ,murders ,rapes and robberies have sullied the image of
Goa as tourist paradise .Tourist are enamoured with local flavour of
customs ,culture etc and not imported EDM festivals.Govt should take note
of feelings of the people or risk mass protest.

[Goanet] Sunburn vs Supersonic: The bitter rivalry between Goa's year-end electronic music gigs (Pamela D'Mello, Scroll.in)

2015-12-27 Thread Goanet Reader

 Annual Goanetters Meet
---

Annual Goanetters Meet - December 28, 2015 - 11:00 am

Fundacao Oriente, Mala, Altinho, Panjim, Goa

  http://bit.ly/FundacaoOrienteGoa

The Fundao Oriente carries out cultural and artistic activities
in India with, for historical and cultural reasons,
special emphasis on the State of Goa.

Looking forward to seeing you there

---

There's a lot of money and many
egos riding on the competing
electronic dance music
festivals -- and, if rumours
are to be believed, political
corruption too. Pamela D’Mello

They're supposed to be celebrations of music and love. But
ever since they started going head-to-head in an attempt to
become the prime attraction of Goa's party season, Sunburn
and Supersonic -- India's most popular electronic dance music
festivals -- have waged a rivalry that has become the stuff
of local legend.

Since 2013, the end-of-the-year EDM events have been
accompanied by allegations that corrupt politicians have kept
permissions dangling until the last minute and about the
police being persuaded to cut the sound at the behest of
rivals when it goes over the prescribed decibel levels.

To those removed from the EDM world, some of the
rumours could seem downright comical. Writers on
online music portals have joined the chorus,
echoing complaints of long queues at one festival
or the other, nepotism in involving sons, wives and
brothers as DJs, domestic talent being treated
badly compared to the overseas musicians, tacky
stages and sound outages. In 2013, Sunburn accused
its rival of Powerpoint presentation theft and
  replication.

This year, with both festivals scheduled to run between
December 27 and 30, the clamour has erupted again. As Sunburn
spruces up its venue at Vagator plateau and Supersonic tests
its speakers at Candolim beach, objections have emerged once
again.

Local objections

Earlier this year, Nationalist Congress Party leader Trajano
D’Mello went to court, pointing to unpaid dues by both
festivals towards security arrangements, the death of two
women at the festivals in 2010 and 2014, and accusations of
drug use. The court earlier this month ordered the state
government to recover the dues and increase security checks
at the venue. Said D'Mello, "Of what use are the festivals if
a private citizen has to go to court to get them to collect
dues to the state?"

Some of the state's hoteliers aren't very happy either. They
would prefer the two festivals -- which attract an estimated
audience of 200,000 between them -- to be held at different
times to serve the economy better and to ensure that the
state's narrow streets aren't overwhelmed by traffic. The Goa
government, they say, seems to have ignored the fact that
this has been recommended by the committee it appoints each
year to issue permission for such events.

"What is going on, that the special committee every year says
the festivals should not be held, police say two simultaneous
festivals are a security and traffic hazard and yet the
minister overrules the committee and permissions are given at
the last minute?" said D'Mello.

The controversies have been brewing since 2013,
when MTV host Nikhil Chinapa, the face of Sunburn
since it had started in 2007, parted ways with
festival founder Shailendra Singh of a firm called
Percept Live. Chinapa then joined hands with Live
Viacom 18 to put together a competing festival.
Supersonic chose the same venue and the same dates
as Sunburn and were after fans of the same genre of
  music.

Since then, the competition between Sunburn and Supersonic
has made for some bizarre political antics in Goa. Much
before the fans arrive, the reverberations are felt in the
corridors of the tourism department and the state government,
where a single-window clearance committee oversees events
that require permissions from multiple state agencies.

Turf war

In 2013, the rivals fought a bitter battle for the venue -- a
74,000 sq mt beach-front property in Candolim that was the
Sunburn trademark. The owners of the property switched
loyalties and leased it out to the new entrants, triggering
court complaints of agreement violations and counter
allegations of non-payments. In the end, Sunburn was left to
find a new venue. It departed for a spot on Vagator plateau,
11 kms away.

On the face of it, Sunburn had suffered a blow by being
bumped off the state's hottest party spot. But it used the
larger 500,000-sq-mt venue in Vagator to scale up its act.

Sir Roland,

I would not know anything about Goa immediately after 1961 or the
scotch drinking before that ..or even much after that.

All I can say is (and this is my personal opinion): Red label is gross
and if I were you, I would not offer it to any whisky drinker.

BTW: Solan no 1 (from the Solan factory) is reportedly infinitely
better than Red label.

If you are into labelsforget Salute, black or blue try the
Green and Gold just a touch of it with a tall glass of club soda.
More than a touch of any good scotch is for the 'Alchees'.

When I attend parties hosted by these folks, I intentionally turn down
their offers of whiskey (usually something very gross like Red label
JW, White Horse or VAT 69) or some very cheap red wine. And the
reaction is uniformly (akin to) "Arre yaar, what kind of Gowan are
you, You are not taking Hot Drinks?". I find it much opportune to have
Club Soda on the rocks.

Dear George, FN et al,
Let me preface this email by saying that knowing FN as I do, he genuinely cares
about the disadvantaged - which as I recall used to be a virture.  Having said
that, let me put this "anti-migrant talk" into perspective by relating a very
private story:

The Story of the River Thames
One day I was walking down the River Thames in London when I heard a certain
gurgling of the stomach. At this precise moment it struck me that maybe I
shouldn't have had two hot-dogs for lunch. Being by the river, I thought I
could
get away with certain things. Taking my cue, I saw a couple of other
fellow-Indians unzip their flies as well. Hurrah I said to myself, a wonderful,
organic moment of community bonding. But barely had I curved my thighs into a
haunch, when I saw an English bobby charge towards me with a baton so thick, I
knew it would break my back into two and I would sail away into the Thames,
alongwith what was left of my hot-dog.

The moral of the story is this. In India we have come to accept every
degradation -moral, ethical, legal, environmental, aesthetic - as the norm and
not the aberration. We have infantilized an entire nation by making excuses and
abdicating our responsibility for change.

Best,
selma

COMMENT: If one accepts that the word 'cynical' = contempt for the

not so sure what Fredrick is whining about.

What exactly in George's comment is reflective of bigotry and
anti-migrant talk. Is Frederick confirming that the "Goan Rule of Law"

I personally believe that Frederick is picking a third-party bone with
George. It is possible (and he may correct me on this) that Frederick
is still smarting from Rajan Parrikar's accusation against Frederick;
an accusation Frederick has neither denied nor dispelled. Sure,

back" positions

The question one has to ask is : Is the concern 'anti-migrant' or is
it related to "bhaille" filthifying the place, using money to destroy
the environment and making Goa into a nuevo-Foras Road of sorts.

I suppose that Bollywood and the so called Indian media could proudly
proclaim:"Did we not tell you ages ago that Goans were drunkards and
their women sluts"?

But thenas long as the 'commerce flows' It is possibly
'Purr-phectly phine by Phredrik'.

Ignore my cynicism that GOA is lawless. Here are two emails I happened to read
today on Goanet.

If anyone thinks I am joking and that it won't happen to Goa, I urge them to

now a slum. In the morning, one can wake up to the delicious smell of human
sewage wafting through the air as one makes their way to white-washed Church
and children filtering in to schools, holding on to the last vestiage of a
civilised life.

Currently there is only rule of law in Goa - sell your motherland, mother,
sister, daughter, wife for a rupee. The rest of "Goan law and order" (also
known as corruption) is a variation of that rule.

While I cannot speak for the "rest of India", I can certainly attest
to #1 (above) being the prevailing impression among most of the
Indians esp North Indians I have come across.

When I attend parties hosted by these folks, I intentionally turn down
their offers of whiskey (usually something very gross like Red label

reaction is uniformly (akin to) "Arre yaar, what kind of Gowan are
you, You are not taking Hot Drinks?". I find it much opportune to have
Club Soda on the rocks.

As a staunch right-wing saffronite, I would like tips from boy 'academic'
Jason Keith Fernandes on how to "oppose." But he better have something
better than his last flop attempt to oppose the showing of my documentary
"The Rape of Goa" at the Taleigao villagers' meeting in June 2007.

Let's see - "evolving cultural manifestations of the Goan Catholic." As far
as the rest of India is concerned, the Goan Catholic is a drunk and their
women are sluts. The boy 'academic' must have been too busy academicking
to notice.

On a more serious note -

Goans cannot speak from both sides of their mouth. If you want to hold
a music festival, rent the Kala Academy theatre and have your show.
You want your "rights" to have this outdoor orgy? Well, I want my rights
too, to not be disturbed by your loud noise and my life intruded upon
by the hordes.

Goans complain that their beaches have become trash cans. So the
remedy is to hold yet another orgy that advertises to the whole world
that yes, come to Goa and use it like a trash can?

The message has to go out loud and clear: Goa is not your personal
Las Vegas, not your personal brothel, not your personal trash can.
Indians, take your sh*t elsewhere, to Kankavalli, or to Bekal. Just
get the hell out of Goa.

Goa police are agitated by the act of their  political bosses for allowing the
sunburn musical extravaganza in contrast  to the ban on beach parties  due to
terror threat after Mumbai attack. Just a night before Police had  dared to
stop this party following a complaint lodged in Calangute Police station  under
Sound pollution act . The decibel level had exceed  by almost 89  which is an
offence under Noise pollution act 1998  section 3 & 4. The  Supreme Court has
acknowledged   citizen’s right to silence and  sound sleep which is a
biological need for human beings. In Goa it is all too easy to get around laws.
There is already a ban on noise making instruments  between 10pm and 6 am.
However, we  can see how the rulebook goes for a toss during the festive
seasons here. The authorities (the beaurocrats  and police , to be precise)
also get indulged  (on being paid bribes, of course) and  facilitate the
organizers of such events  in
residential areas. The appeal to  such raucous organizers  not to  disturb the
citizens  has hitherto remained unheeded. I wonder how this event has bypassed
the purview of the regulations.

If anybody violates the Madhya Pradesh Sound and Noise Act as extended to
Goa, the equipment is siezed and the show is put out of action.

The organisers of Sunburn are NOT anybody!

If you disbelieve me, file an RTI and find out what happened in the office
of the Superintendent of Police North, SDPO-Dy S.P.Porvorim, Dy S.P.
Traffic, DM and District Collector-North and SDM-Bardez who were the actors
on stage. The script writers, producers, directors and choreographers are
hidden from view to avoid Sunburn.

It appears to be a case of legal extortion, stopping the show on Sunday
evening and getting a deposit of Rs.1.00 lakh on Monday morning only to
let the show go on!

[Goanet] Sunburn?

2008-12-29 Thread Frederick "FN" Noronha
My young journo friend, Nigel Britto, has this on his Gmail status
message today:

Sunburn - noun, verb, adjective - The terrorist act of illegally
imposing your loud, disgusting and obnoxious computerized music on
peace-loving people with blatant disregard for the law. Mostly
implemented by bribing officials to get permissions. Associated with
copious amounts of drugs, sex, nudity and general aural and corporal
degradation. Patronized by addicts, drunkards, and wannabe youth with
downward-spiralling self-esteems and rock-bottom or non-existent IQs.
