Spacious 3 bedroom flat (3BHK)available for sale in upscale area near Miramar beach Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com Having grown up in Verem/Reis Magos in the 60s, I remember walking and playing on quite a wide beach starting from the white lighthouse, farol in Portuguese and "Foleir" to all Verenkars! At that time, there was no beach or very little of it on the Panjim side. The Reis Magos beach was at least 20 metres wide during the high tide and perhaps a bit more during the low tide. There used to be also a sandbar, where, if the Captain of the Goa-Bombay steamer, was not careful enough, it used to get stuck and had to be pulled out by tugs! We used to walk all along the beach past the Reis Magos fort into 'Keg de vel' --(Not sure how it used to be spelt). It was like a nice private beach for the people of that side. Even the Church procession (Purcaon) used to wind its way over the beach, during Easter celebrations. We could clearly see the old GMC building from the Verem side. The lighthouse point was where we used to wait to wave a goodbye to any of our folks travelling to Bombay, by steamer. Then, somewhere in the mid-60s, casuarina trees were planted on the Panjim side and when the 70s came along, our beach had started eroding, threatening a few houses along the beach. Slowly, it disappeared and only the big cement blocks could protect the road and even the base of the fort. The Panjim side was reclaimed by putting in truck loads of mud. That is where stands the Kala Academy or the Panjim Gymkhana or the Indoor stadium. I am sure there might be some Goanetters who remember this. I would say that the force of the river has dimnished on Panjim side, and probably the opposide side (Verem?) will suffer erosion. As the force of the river-flow has diminished due to building piers further upriver (Panjim jetty) or other causes, over the years the Mandovi river has deposited a lot of sand on Panjim side and the water flow seems to have moved more towards Betim. My father told me, when we used to walk alongside the pleasant avenue in Campal, that when he lived in Campal in the 1920s, the waves used to beat against the balustrade where the cannon/lighthouse were. Now, there has been a build-up of sand so much so that now there is a Childrens' Park and Kala Academy buildings, the Campal Ground etc where apparently the river once used to flow. - Original Message From: JoeGoaUk To: goa...@goanet.org Cc: gtedi...@gmail.com; New Herald Id Sent: Tuesday, 18 August, 2009 9:39:25 PM Subject: [Goanet] Talking Photos: Vanishing footpath due to sand erosion? One could not walk into the Miramar beach without the use of the steps provided near Goa Tourism Compound wall and towards St. Anthony cross/shrine (unless you are good at high-jumping) But now, one can walk into the beach almost straight from your car or the road. The footpath is now almost leveled with the beach covering sand for up to 1 meter in height. Don’t know whatever happened to the CCP project initiated some two year ago by bamboo fencing the beach to arrest sand erosion etc. (see clip) Send instant messages to your online friends http://au.messenger.yahoo.com
