Re: [Goanet] Any info on International Women Hockey
There needs clarification regarding who of these two, Philomena Trinadade and Loretta D'Souza, were selected as the second goalkeeper for the Moscow Olympics. I remember Loretta. I covered the camp at Pune. Eugene
Re: [Goanet] Any info on International Women Hockey
Eugene, I believed it was Trinidade, but its getting mysterious. Her name is not on this list at the link below. There was also a World cup around that time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/India_at_the_1980_Summer_Olympics#Women.27s_Team_Competition - Margaret Toscanohttp://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Margaret_Toscanoaction=editredlink=1 - Sudha Chaudhryhttp://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sudha_Chaudhryaction=editredlink=1 - Gangotri Bhandari http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gangotri_Bhandari - Rekha Mundphanhttp://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Rekha_Mundphanaction=editredlink=1 - Rup Kumari Sainihttp://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Rup_Kumari_Sainiaction=editredlink=1 - Varsha Soni http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varsha_Soni - Eliza Nelsonhttp://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Eliza_Nelsonaction=editredlink=1 - Prem Maya Sonir http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prem_Maya_Sonir - Nazleen Madraswallahttp://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Nazleen_Madraswallaaction=editredlink=1 - Selma d'Silvahttp://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Selma_d%27Silvaaction=editredlink=1 - Lorraine Fernandeshttp://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Lorraine_Fernandesaction=editredlink=1 - Harpreet Gillhttp://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Harpreet_Gillaction=editredlink=1 - Balwinder Kaur Bhatiahttp://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Balwinder_Kaur_Bhatiaaction=editredlink=1 - Geeta Sareenhttp://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Geeta_Sareenaction=editredlink=1 - Nisha Sharmahttp://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Nisha_Sharmaaction=editredlink=1 - Hutoxi Baglihttp://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hutoxi_Bagliaction=editredlink=1 - I have a feeling that she is at: http://sbm.temple.edu/ciber/abroad_clyon.htmCourse selection and transfer of credit are to be selected from the pre-approved course equivalency and signed off by Philomena Trinidad, study abroad advisor. Re: [Goanet] Any info on International Women Hockey Players of Goan
Eugene, Eliza Nelson was very much Goan. She lived on Dastur Meher Road in Poona. She used to be Eliza Mendonca. Her family has been known to mine since the fifties, when my dad first came to Poona as a student. Reena Eugene Correia wrote: I wanted to cross-check on some Goan players who represented India. I knew all the names of Goans till 1980, the time women's hockey was introduced in the Olympics, but have forgotten them. Yes, Margaret Toscano, of the famous Tosa's restaurant in Mumbai, was the goalkeeper. Selma D'Cunha from Dabul and Fiona Albuquerque were in the team. I am not sure if Eliza Nelson was a Goan. I know she was from Pune. The best bet is to contact the All-India Women's Hockey Association. There were a few Goa-based Goans who played for India. Eugene
Re: [Goanet] Any info on International Women Hockey Players of Goan Origin
Dears In the discussion of international women hockey players of Goan origin, I don't seem to have noticed the name of Lorretta D'Souza, from Moira. She was the only resident of Goa to have played in the gold medal winning 1980 Moscow Olympics team. She was I think the second choice goalkeeper. She's now married to Adv. T.T Srinivasan, has two sons, lives in Vasco, and works in the Customs. Re: [Goanet] Any info on International Women Hockey Players of Goan Origin
Hi Jason, The entire Tanzanian ladies hockey team would have been made up of Goans. I only remember seeing the Tanzanian ladies play one international match. In the late sixties, early seventies, a Goan lady from Uganda married a Tanzanian goal keeper, Ludger Gomes. She played for Uganda ( I cant remember her name right now) but was the best lady hockey player I have seen ever. She was so fast that she could dodge players from the men's team with whom she practised. Her brother is a referee and runs the men's hockey tournaments in Toronto today. My favourite ladies hockey player is my former neighbour, Ina Rebello. She introduced me to the game and played for the Goan clubs in Dar before playing for India in several world cups. She now lives in Mumbai. Any one out there who can throw some light on any International Women Hockey Players of Goan Origin who have represented India or their respective countries in international hockey tournaments .. The most famous names that come to mind are that of Dr Otilia Mascarenhas, Lorraine Fernandes and Selma D'Silva. Sybil Miranda (was she a D'Mello before?), Elvira Britto, Donita D'Mello, Fiona Albuquerque, Angela D'Sa have played for India, but i am not too sure if they have Goan roots. Any idea if Erminda Menezes (daughter of Sacru Menezes) played for India? I know there have been loads of Goan who have played for India. What about other countries? Any information will be much appreciated. Jason __ Be smarter than spam. See how smart SpamGuard is at giving junk email the boot with the All-new Yahoo! Mail. Philomena Trinidade, Goalkeeper Moscow Olympics, From B.P.T. Wadala, Mumbai. Now in the US. Sports Medicine. Also Hockey coach if I am not mistaken. Practiced at Guru Nanak Khalsa college, and Don Bosco Matunga. Often felt that the Salesians perhaps saw her as a physical (tough girl) manifestation of both Mary's in the Bible. If I remember correctly, one of her coaches was Jaswant Singh, venantius Message: 8 Date: Sun, 1 Jun 2008 19:58:18 -0700 (PDT) From: Mervyn Lobo [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Goanet] Any info on International Women Hockey Players of Goan Origin Hi Jason, The entire Tanzanian ladies hockey team would have been made up of Goans. One such story was about the House of 100 Mirrors. ? A puppy learned of this place and decided to visit. He happily scaled the stairs and looked through the doorway with his ears lifted high and his tail wagging as fast as it could. He found himself staring at many other happy little puppies with their tails wagging just as fast as his. He smiled and was answered with many great smiles just as warm and friendly. As he left the House, he thought to himself, This is a wonderful place. I will come back and visit it often. In this same village, another little puppy, who was perpetually unhappy, decided to visit the house. He slowly climbed the stairs and hung his head low as he looked into the door. When he saw many unfriendly looking canines staring back at him, he barked at them and was horrified to see all the angry puppies growling back at him. As he left, he thought to himself, That is a horrible place, and I will never go back there again. In the real world, all the faces we encounter are mirrors. And more often than not, the immediate reflection we see on their faces is our own. We choose the kind of reflections we see on the faces of the people we meet. And hence we must choose to be better at the mood we allow ourselves to be in. After all, hope and despair, cheer and frown are all very infectious. It is our approach and our actions that trigger an aligned response. So if we want to be surrounded by happy, positive faces, we must begin with making the right changes in our own mental makeup and behaviour.? Mirrors, they say, don?t lie.
