Eddie, Pratap Naik sj of the Thomas Stevens Konkanni Kendr has
planted, in the TSKK garden at Alto Porvorim (alongside the Xavier
Centre for Historical Research), some 100+ plants from Goa. He plans
to cover almost every major fruit-bearing/flowering plant from the
region. He has labelled each neatly with their Latin/local (Konkani)
names. Where Konkani names do not exist, he has created names for
some. Will forward this to him to see if he has an answer. You would
know Fr Naik better in the context of being the director of the TSKK
and the livewire behind the Roman Konkani campaign. Expats could learn
from visiting both his institution and its garden. FN

In Goa, it is most commonly known as Carmel...
Karmeli-fulam.

I wonder if it comes from Mount Carmel.

Have noy yet visited the famed mount; does it
have a profusion of these blooms?

Who is Richard Zimler?

Headline: In search of the silenced
Source: The Independent (UK). 2 March 2007.
Excerpts: Richard Zimler has won global acclaim for his novels about the
Portuguese Jewish diaspora. He stormed the bestseller lists in two
continents with The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon … The book yoked its sketches
of secret lore to a meaty and moving historical saga which introduced the
Zarco dynasty of Portuguese Jews. Zimler never harboured plans to write a
series but Zarcos returned, first in Africa and then, battling the
Inquisition, in the Goa of his Guardian of the Dawn. Now, in The Seventh
Gate (Constable, £7.99), the family takes a fourth bow … 1655 words. Full
text at
http://enjoyment.independent.co.uk/books/features/article2316901.ece

The Richard Zimler website is at http://www.zimler.com/

Read the first chapter of his Goa book, Guardian of the Dawn online at
http://www.zimler.com/books.php

An experience to relate. My wife, is an avid Zimler fan. Last year she
was

traveling home from the office, got into a tube train and pulled out
Guardian of the Dawn to continue reading it. Another woman sitting
opposite
her also reached into her bag and pulled out a copy of the same book.
Their

eyes met and they are now firm friends …

I am grateful for the responses from Alfred Tavares Pratap Naik sj. I
quite forgot that I have a copy of:

DALGADO. Daniel Gelanio: Flora de Goa e Savantvadi. Lisbon. 1898. 290 p.

The pages of my copy were still uncut but delving into it, on page 152,
Dalgado gives the Konkani name of Bougainvillea spectabilis as Bugamvil.

Could it be that Alfred and Fr Naik have named other species of
Bougainvillea such as Bougainvillea buttiana, Bougainvillea glabra,
Bougainvillea peruviana and Bougainvillea? Photographs of some of them are
at
http://www.hear.org/starr/hiplants/images/thumbnails/html/bougainvillea_sp.h
