2020-02-03 Thread PETER NAZARETH
Frederick,
I read a manuscript by Ahmad Virji about a novel which is, among other things,
about the Asian expulsion by Amin. I thought it was a good novel, written
comic book style.
I taught at Kololo school after graduating from Makerere. I taught for a
semester before leaving for Leeds University.
Apparently I made a mark on Ahmad since he got in touch with me two months ago
after several years sending me his novel.
We both had appeared in a book of writings about the Asian Expulsion, published
in London in 1974.
I liked his novel,
Which is somewhat different from mine.
I sent John a few extracts from the novel three weeks ago.
I thought you should look at it.
I know that evaluating a novel takes time.
Ahmad is wondering whether he sent it to the right address.
The semester started yesterday and there is a lot of snow. It is cold
Best wishes.

Dear Prof. Nazareth

Hi. When I sent my MS to Mr. Frederick Noronha, the email address I used was:
goa1...@gmail.com which I found from the goa1556
website. I later requested for an acknowledgement of the MS, but there has not
been any response so far. I was wondering if the address might have changed.
Do you any other email for Mr. Noronha?

Please help. With many thanks.

Kind regards

Don't cry, baby (Baby, don't you cry)
You know there'll always be someone who cares
Don't cry, baby (Baby, don't you cry)

This is a follow-up to Freddy's recent post that we are more anglicised at the
detriment of our mai-bhas. As he says "Who the bleep cares about our Maim-Bhas
anyway ?" Perhaps a konkani translation of "Who the bleep cares..." would
be
appropriate.

Got this from a Goanet friend and a Google search:

Technically, emphyteusis land on which `foro' is paid. Locally called

the enjoyment of the property on condition of taking care of the estate and
paying taxes and sometimes a small rent.)

The folk who ran the unit were so proud of their product...and

2011-07-04 Thread Victor Rangel-Ribeiro
My dear Frederick and Pandu Lampiao,
The old-style Goan houses did not have red Mangalore tiles. Well into 1961,
they
had the old curved tiles, that were placed in special rows, one row inverted
over the other, forming hundreds of channels, so that even the heaviest rain
found its way off the roof and on to the ground.
Of course, if a kir dropped a large seed on to the roof, or a child threw a
stone or aimed at a bird with a catapult, the tiles would get damaged, and the
rain would then finds its way inside the house. I remember, as a child, I and
my
brother and sisters would have to run from room to room during a rainstorm,
placing pots and pans on the floor where a leak had developed in the ceiling
directly above. That is the reason why the tiles had to be replaced by hand
every year, and that is why we now have red Mangalore tiles in place.
Regards to all,
Victor

Re: [Goanet] Query: Renovating a house...

2011-07-05 Thread Pandu Lampiao
Hi Victor,
the curved tiles (what I was referring to) are now not available is
storesone has to order them from the area between
Karwar-Mangalore...one sees old tile-making units (quite beautiful
when one is on the Konkan railway going south).
The curved tiles are now in fashion and I have seen homes bought by
** and being renovated using the rounded tiles.

The newer homes used the flat tiles (like your casa)...they were
fashionable and economic (one used lesser tiles etc). As well, the
flat ones were easier to repaid

The trouble is there are a few folks who can repair the rounded
tilesthese are Goans who work in groups and they have to be booked
many months in advance.

For Fred: as for the floor tiles, there are some stores in Margao that
carry themI know someone using them. Nice but expensive.
WHy not use red-cement. There are still a few folks in Peadne who can
do the cement flooring.
I had a nasty experience.the lot from across the Ghats claim they
have experience doing cement floorsNAW. They missed the basic mix
to get a yellowended up getting green, then dark greencostly
mistake. Finally got a fellow from another neighbouring state who got
the yellowbut nothing compared to the workmanship of the old Goan
masons.

The other tip for flooring is to catch someone from Ker. They have
a technique (which they use in mud (mud-brick homes)...where they mix
charcoal, coconut shell powdered and some flower juice to get a shiny
black..

Cheers.

However, googling, I came across a fuller description in the Times of

The account was probably written soon after the disaster. There is no

slow speed after leaving at 8.05 a.m., when it was struck by a high
swell on the starboard side. All the passengers from this side rushed to
the port side, which became overweight and resulted in the ship listing
heavily and capsizing within the next two minutes. Strangely, there were
no reports of rough weather on the morning of July 17.

In fact, the port authorities had no inkling of the tragedy until a few
of the survivors swam to safety and reached the Sassoon Docks and
related the news at 3 p.m. After a two-day search operations by a fleet
of naval, Port Trust and mercantile vessels rounded up about 155
survivors. According to reports, most people travelling aboard "Ramdas"
belonged to the lower sections of society living in the Girgaum and
Parel areas of Bombay. Although an extensive search was launched by Port
authorities no wreckage was found immediately after the disaster.
However, a decade later, the wreckage resurfaced on its own at Ballard
Pier off Bombay Coast.

In order to help families who had to deal with the twin tragedies of
losing their dear ones as well as suffer economic hardships due to the
loss of their bread-winner, The Times of India Relief Fund set up a
special fund to collect donations for their benefit. The Governor of
Bombay also contributed Rs. 1,000 to the fund, which was disbursed
between government and local agencies involved in relief operations.

Dear Mr Fernandes:

Thank you for your valuable input into the sinking of the Ramdas. You have
helpfully corroborated your story with an extract from the "Times of India".
In the bargain, you've also cleared the cobwebs from my memory about the
exact date and location of this coastal plying vessel's sinking mishap. It's
also interesting to note the passengers were not predominantly Goan. You have
also dispelled a misimpression I had about the Ramdas being called the
the "Queen of the Konkan Coast" by Mumbai's proletariat. I do remember
vaguely the illfated ship went down during the early part of the monsoon
season. I understand, notwithstanding the Indian Ocean's monsoon-related
hazards facing small ships, short voyages may have been made infrequently
if storms were not imminent. I wonder whether we can get more information about
this tragedy from the ship's owners and the Bombay Port Trust.

Your thorough research is commendable. I looked up "Google" too some time ago
but did not have your alertness. Your find is definitely enlightening.

Regards

Sincerely

Arnold

Re: [Goanet] Query about: Victor Parajoti

2013-10-01 Thread Victor Rangel-Ribeiro
Dear Frederick,
I'll certainly be able to help here.

Victor Paranjoti was a good friend of mine from 1949 until 1956, when I left
for the US. As music critic first for the National and Sunday Standards and
then for the Times of India, I supported all his music-making activities, and
covered both the Madrigal Singers concerts and the other major concert group
that he founded. We also lunched together at ACC every Thursday.
Warm regards,
Victor

That's interesting, Victor!

In the meanwhile, I started a bare-bones page on the Wikipedia as a tribute
to the work of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Paranjoti

If you could add something there, it would be great! Or, send me the
details, and I'll try to fit it in. Best wishes! FN

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) farm at
Old Goa (opp. Karmali rail station) has a gene bank of 80+
Goan mango varieties, including the bispo, thanks to
Dr. KM Mathew, the ICAR horticulturist in the 1980s/90s.

One can order grafts of any of the varieties and the ICAR
makes them for a decent fee. Trust this helps, v

Hi,

We have two of the 'bism'/'bisp'/'bishop' mango trees. Please wait until
the 'season' for the 'seed' (if the trees bear fruit this year). The stock
(for grafting?) can be taken at any time.

Cheers.
Joel.

2013-07-25 Thread Alfred de Tavares
MUSICA EM GOA NOS DIAS PASSADOS.

Rico, give a ring to Nuno Jorge. He lives now at home in Loutulim.
Also, Aselmo Fernandes...don't know if he has withdrawn from
Panjim, sub aposentamento. To Povoacao, Benaulim?

He was part of all musical activities in yester Goa.

I an quite sure that Maestro Antonio Figueiredo's "Orfeao" used to
be the big draw. But that was in Panjim, quite inaccessible to village
folk.

Loutulim was blesed with the Maestro's occasionalmusical evenings,
during the May vacations.

Margao side was provided for by Pe. Camilo Xavier & Limu Figueiredo,
maestro's brother, with niece, the gifted soprano, Leopoldina. She will
certainly be the best possible source for you.

Chacha though not at all musical has sired a prodigiously gifted
musician...Jan Tavares. Google, etc. him.

Re: [Goanet] QUERY REG. TENANT POLICE VERIFICATION FORM

2014-01-21 Thread Joe Lobo
  Celes,

There has to be some quasi-legal agency that interprets these rules (
that to me seem inconsistent )it`s no use asking any senior
police officers as they will most probably fob you off with some
red-tape. If you could contact the lawyer Aires Rodrigues who often
writes in to this forum regarding legal matters he might give you a
"pro-bono " solution to your problems.

Subject: [Goanet] QUERY REG. TENANT POLICE VERIFICATION FORM

As required by Goa Police, for filling up all the details of the migrants in
the Form and
when the form was submitted by the Tenant to the Police Outpost. It is noticed
that
some charges about Rs.500.00 are levied by the Police for verification
of the form for migrants. I was under the impression that this service is free.
Also if it
relates to a couple, then one form for the husband along with all the details
and other form for
the wife alongwith 5 photographs and I.D. proof each are required to be
submitted. Is this procedure
right or wrong as they belong to the same family. Also it is difficult to
understand why the
Police charges money from the Tenant. Is it a new system started that sometimes
Rs.200 and above are charged. Some are not charged while some tenants are
charged. Earlier no one is charging any money from the tenant as of late it is
mandatory by the Director General of Police that all owners who keep tenants
have to submit the form.
