Mogall Blasio bab,

Please, by all means, give us all English-Konkani combination words that you
know.
It will surely enrich the Konkani language.

Regarding writing as accurately as possible, it was a general suggestion.
Therefore,
I leave it entirely to you.

The 'Devanagari' word 'Maakad' comes from the Sanskrit word 'Markat'
for a monkey.
In Sanskrit, I think it means someone who is playful or mischievous.

The one type of monkey that can bee seen at temple compounds, some railway
stations etc. are called 'mankod' while another wild monkey, larger in size
and has red behind, that used to be called 'vandor' (in Kannada 'Vaanara')
that is edible hence hunted in 'south'. To capture a mankod, a tender
coconut is kept with a very small hole as bait.  The monkey inserts its hand
to grab the tender meat, but can't pull his hand out because it has fisted
its hand with coconut meat and also can not run fast as its hand is trapped
with the coconut weight, it can't run fast, so is caught easily. MD

Re: [Goanet] Request for words for monkey in Konknni

2009-10-28 Thread Domnic Fernandes
Dear Blasio,

Thanks for providing an interesting combination of English+Konkani word,
mankod. -
man = human; kod = like. We look forward to learning more such combinations of
English-Konkani words.

As far as I know, the Goan Konkani word for monkey is makod. However, in
Karnataka
they call it mankod. Hence, I wrote . we in Goa write it as makod. The
female monkey is known as keldem.

Whenever we write Konkani on a public forum, let us keep in mind that there are
scores of people, including Goans in foreign countries, who pick up what we
write
and learn from us. Therefore, we should write as accurately as possible rather
than
confuse and misguide them.

Thank you.

I think it works this way..

Mankod = man + kod
Where, man = human
Kod = like (may be in some other language. A combo ? probably )

Similarly makod = ma + kod

Where ma = shortened version of man
Kod = like

Therefore, mankod = makod
