Dear Goanetters,

After reading several posts on this subject, I wonder whether it is really
necessary to know the exact time goanet was born. what is important is to
recognise that it has done tremendous work in bringing together a lot of
goans in the diaspora.
As for me, while wishing Goanet many future years of success, I would like
to thank Goanet for introducing me to the 'Goa' I never knew existed
although I was born in Goa and lived first 23 years of my life there. I
will not name him but there is one particular moderator I would like to
also thank for always being kind to me and my sometimes deliberately
written contentious posts.

I was not around when Goanet (then spelt as GoaNet or Goa-Net)
started. But how, as is well known, most such initiatives don't start
with a bang... many get started without even being noticed, a few
survive the test of time. And then we write "history" with the benefit
of hindsight. Mostly, such things are not planned, very well thought
out, and we don't even know where they would end up.

For a "short" time? I think Goacom.com hosted Goanet for a
considerable period of time. They did it gratis, we shared content
with them, and after awhile, parted ways.

If I'm not wrong, GoaWeb was started by Marlon and was merged into
GoaCom (which took on a more ambitious and commercial role).

Apart from misspelling Winkle, this is, in my view, quite rude. How
would you know who plays what role in keeping the project going?
Everyone need not be visible or content providers (like you and me
are) to play a significant role in a project of this kind.

As for the date of Goanet's founding, personally I believe this is not
a significant issue. I would be more concerned with if, and how, we
can located Goanet's early archives from our very early days...

It is possible that I could have missed out some others in my earlier
post, but on comparing lists, the only name which struck me (and which
I missed out) was that of Eustaquio J Santimano of Colva/Singapore
(and Scandinavia for some time too). FN

Needless to go round in circles. In a note from long-time ago, Herman
has said that the initial number at the launch of GoaNet was 20 and he
has given the date. How did Sept 17 come into the picture and how was
GoaNet "formally launched."? Did any one person or a group launch it
"officially" and where? Perhaps John D'Souza or Tim de Mello should
confirm if GoaNet was hosted by Goacom for a short time. GoaWeb merged
into GoaNet, isn't it?

I have called Herman Van Wickle before for the only reason is that he
wakes up on Aug. 25 to deliver his thank-you note. Will he please wake
up again and give us his privileged view on the subject so that we can
put this whole business of dating GoaNet to rest once and for all?
Marlon should also add his knowledge of GoaWeb and GoaNet to the
debate to get an all-round picture. These two can help separate fact
from fiction.

It would also be good to add the names of the volunteers who served on
the Admin Team and the time period they were there. A detailed history
is important for anyone seeking to research the Goan venture into
cyberspace.
